A.increase
B.had increased
C.would increase
D.will have increased
A B C D
D
[解析] 本题考查将来完成时用法。题目末尾的时间状语by the end of this year是一个很明显的提示,表明本题的动词时态应该是将来完成时,故本题答案为选项D。 凡是遇到by...引出的时间状语,如by the time...或者by the end...
跟动词不定式,即mean to do sth.表示“计划做某事”。

A.have go
B.have to go
C.have gone

A.Having worked
B.Have been working
C.Have worked
D.Worked
A B C D

Part Ⅲ Reading Comprehension
Eye contact is a nonverbal technique that helps the speaker "sell" his or her ideas to an audience. Besides its persuasive powers, eye contact helps hold listener interest. A successful speaker must maintain eye contact with an audience. To have a good relation with listeners, a speaker should maintain direct eye contact for at least 75 percent of the time. Some speakers focus exclusively on their notes. Others gaze over the heads of their listeners. Both are likely to lose audiences' interest and esteem. People who maintain eye contact while speaking, whether from a podium (演讲台) or from across the table, are "regarded not only as exceptionally well disposed by their target but also as more believable and earnest". To show the potency of eye contact in daily life, we have only to consider how passers- by behave when their glances happen to meet on the street. At one extreme are those people who feel obliged to smile when they make eye contact. At the other extreme are those who feel awkward and immediately look away. To make eye contact, it seems, is to make a certain link with someone. Eye contact with an audience also lets a speaker know and monitor the listeners. It is, in fact, essential for analyzing an audience during a speech. Visual cues (暗示) from audience members can indicate that a speech is dragging, that the speaker is dwelling on a particular point for too long, or that a particular point requires further explanation. As we have pointed out, visual feedback from listeners should play an important role in shaping a speech as it is delivered.
4. In daily life, when the glances of two passers-by happen to meet, these two persons will inevitably ______.
A.smile to each other
B.feel awkward and look away immediately
C.try to make a conversation with each other
D.Both A and B.
A B C D
D

5. Eye contact with an audience, according to the author, has all the following benefits for the speaker except that it doesn't ______.
A.help the speaker to control the audience
B.help the speaker to gain audience interest and esteem
C.help the speaker to know whether he is talking too much about a certain point
D.help the speaker to analyze his audience when he is beginning his speech
A B C D
D
[解析] 本题为细节题判断题。选项A,B和C在文章中都提到了,只有D没有提到。故选D。
The Bush administration is considering an audit of the national school lunch program to make sure that all the children receiving free and reduced-price lunches come from families that are truly low-income. The Department of Agriculture says about 28 million children get their lunch each day through the program, which cost 68 billion in 2002. A USDA study last year estimated that one in five children participating might be ineligible because the family's income is too high. USDA estimates that 10 billion of the funding bought lunches for ineligible children. A family of four with an annual income of up to 23,530 qualify for free meals. Families that make 33,485 qualify for reduced-price lunches costing up to 40 cents. Administration officials and lawmakers say they're trying to keep recipients honest while not scaring away needy families. What happens with the program won't just affect how many children receive free chicken nuggets, chocolate milk and canned fruit salad. States and school districts use the program figures to estimate poverty levels at schools, so the results also could affect the amount of government aid at all levels that makes its way down to struggling schools. Schools rely on parents to report their income but generally don't require proof. "When you start tightening up the scrutiny on these applications, families become fearful and they don't ap ply," says Gaye Lynn MacDonald of the school food service association.

Ancient sailors and farmers did not have satellites and computers to help them forecast the weather. They observe the sky, winds and clouds. Eventually, patterns emerged and people made up sayings to remember them. We now realize that behind the sayings often lies real science. Here are two time-tested sayings, and the climate reasoning backing them up: "When the dew (露水) is on the grass, rain will never come to pass," Clear skies at night lower temperatures enough for humidity (湿度) to condense as dew. So a heavy dew forms on a summer night, except a fair day. But 'i when grass is dry before the morning light, look for rain before night." This is especially true if temperatures rise during the night as a result of increasing cloud cover. "If night has a fever, it cries in the morning." If with your nose you smell the day, some weather is on the way. Plants release oil into the atmosphere, and research indicates that the higher the humidity is, the more oils the plants gives off. This produces the distinctive smell many of us recognize when we say: "Smells like rain today."
