It was the anti-globalization movement that really put globalization on the map. As a word it has existed since the 1960s, but the protests against this allegedly new process, which its opponents condemn as a way of ordering people's lives, brought globalization out of the financial and academic worlds and into everyday current affairs. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the business model called the "globalized" financial market came to be seen as an entity (实体) that could have more than just an economic impact on the parts of the world it touched. Globalization came to be seen as more than simply a way of doing business, or running financial markets—it became a process. From then on the word took on a life of its own. So how does the globalized market work? It is modern communications that make it possible; for the British service sector to deal with its customers through a call centre in India, or for a sportswear (运动服) manufacturer to design its products in Europe, make them in southeast Asia and sell them in north America. But this is where the anti-globalization side gets stuck in (关注). If these practices replace domestic economic life with an economy that is heavily influenced or controlled from overseas, then the creation of a globalized economic model and the process of globalization can also be seen as a surrender of power to the corporations, or a means of keeping poorer nations in their place. Not everyone agrees that globalization is necessarily evil, or that globalized corporations are running the lives (主宰) of individuals or are more powerful than nations. Some say that the spread of globalization, free markets and free trade into the developing world is the best way to beat poverty—the only problem is that free markets and free trade do not yet truly exist. Globalization can be seen as a positive, negative or even marginal process. And regardless of whether it works for good or ill, globalization's exact meaning will continue to be the subject of debate among those who oppose, support or simply observe it.

Millions of people are using cell phones today. In many places it is actually considered unusual not to use one. In many countries, cell phones are very popular with young people. They find that the phones are more than a means of communication—having a mobile phone shows that they are cool and connected. The explosions around the world in mobile phone use make some health professionals worried. Some doctors are concerned that in the future many people may suffer health problems from the use of mobile phones. In England, there has been a serious debate about this issue. Mobile phone companies are worried about the negative publicity of such ideas. They say that there is no proof that mobile phones are bad for your health. On the other hand, why do some medical studies show changes in the brain cells of some people who use mobile phones? Signs of change in the tissues of the brain and head can be detected with modern scanning (扫描) equipment. In one case, a traveling salesman had to retire at a young age because of serious memory loss. He couldn't remember even simple tasks. He would often forget the name of his own son. This man used to talk on his mobile phone for about six hours a day, every day of his working week, for a couple of years. His family doctor blamed his mobile phone use, but his employer's doctor didn't agree. What is it that make mobile phones potentially harmful? The answer is radiation. High-tech machines can detect very small amount of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone companies agree that there is some radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry about. As the discussion about their safety continues, it appears that it's best to use mobile phones less often. Use your regular phone if you want to talk for a long time. Use your mobile phone only when you really need it. Mobile phones can be very useful and convenient, especially in emergencies. In the future, mobile phones may have a warning label that says they are bad for your health. So for now, it's wise not to use your mobile phone too often.

①New York—the Statue of Liberty, the skyscrapers, the beautiful shops on Fifth Avenue and the many theaters on Broadway. This is America's cultural capital. It is also her biggest city, with a population of nearly 8 million. In the summer it is hot, hot, hot and in the winter it can be very cold. Still there are hundreds of things to do and see all the year round. ②Manhattan is the real center of the city. When people say "New York City", they usually mean Manhattan. Most of the interesting shops, buildings and museums are here. In addition, Manhattan is the scene of New York's busy night life. In 1605, the first Europeans came to Manhattan from Holland. They bought the island from the Native Americans for a few glass-necklaces worth about $ 26 today. ③Wall Street in Manhattan is the financial heart of the USA. It is also the most important banking center in the world. It is a street of "skyscrapers". These are those incredible, high buildings, which Americans invented, and built faster and higher than anyone else. Perhaps the two most spectacular skyscrapers in New York are the two towers of the New York World Trade Center. When the sun sets, their 110 floors shine like pure gold. ④Like every big city, New York has its own traffic system. Traffic jams can be terrible. It's usually quickest to go by subway. The New York subway is easy to use and quite cheap. The subway goes to almost every corner of Manhattan. But it is not safe to take the subway late at night because in some places you could get robbed. New York buses are also easy to use. You see more if you go by bus. There ale more than 30,000 taxis in New York. Taxis do not go outside the city. However. they will go to the airports. In addition to the taxi fare, people give the taxi driver a fip of 15 percent of the fare's value. ⑤Central Park is a beautiful green oasis in the middle of New York's concrete desert. It is surprisingly big, with lakes and woods, as well as organized recreation areas. New Yorkers love Central Park, and they use it all the time. In the winter, they go ice-skating, and in the summer roller-skating. They play ball, ride horses and have picnics. They go bicycling and boating. There is even a children's zoo, with wild birds and animals. ⑥Along the east side of Central Park runs Fifth Avenue, once called "Millionaire's Row." In the 19th century, the richest men in America built their magnificent homes here. It is still the most fashionable street in the city, with famous department stores. ⑦Broadway is the street where you will find New York's best-known theaters. But away from the bright lights and elegant clothes of Broadway are many smaller theaters. Their plays are called "off-Broad-way" and are often more unusual than the Broadway shows. As well as many theaters, New York has a famous opera house. This is the Metropolitan, where international stars sing from September until April. Carnegie Hall is the city's more popular concert hall. But night life in New York offers more than classical music and theater. There are hundreds of nightclubs where people go to eat and dance.

Developing the skill of effective communication can do wonders for the quality of your life and your relationships. One of the major causes of arguments and disagreements is not being able to convey the right message. Far too many marriages have ended in divorce due to miscommunication. 1 Let's explore some ways you can improve your communication skills in order to better send your message to the other person. So what is effective communication? Simply put, it is the condition where a receiver gets the message from the sender in exactly the way the sender has intended it. 2 If, however, you give your phone number but the other person gets it wrong, then there is a problem. It can be the sender's fault, the receiver's fault, or both. 3 So what are some common barriers to effective communication? 4 I'm sure you have experienced this. You are trying to tell someone something and they just won't listen to you. It can be because they aren't focused, or they are upset and don't want to bothe, or they just don't care. 5 This can be due to things like not being able to come up with the right words, giving a bad example, or simply not understanding the message enough to explain it to the receiver. A. One common problem is that the receiver doesn't want to listen to the sender. B. In other words, if you tell someone your phone number and they get it correctly, you have succeeded. C. These misinterpretations of the message are called barriers. D. Another common barrier has to do with the sender not conveying the message clearly. E. Moreover in the business world, lack of proper communication can cause all sorts of problems from loss of sales and loss of jobs to the collapse of companies. F. This is why having effective business communications is so vital, whether they are verbal or written.
What makes people different from computer programs? What is the missing element that our theories don't yet 1 for? The answer is simple: People read newspaper stories for a reason: to learn more about 2 they are interested in. Computers, on the other hand, don't. In fact, computers don't even have interests; there is nothing in particular that they are trying to find out when they read. If a computer program is to be a model of story understanding, it should also read for a "purpose". Of course, people have several goals that do not make 3 to attribute to computers. One might read a restaurant guide in order to satisfy hunger or entertainment goals, or to find a good place to go for a business lunch. Computers do not get hungry, and computers do not have business lunches. However, these physiological and social goals give 4 to several intellectual or cognitive goals. A goal to satisfy hunger gives rise to goals to find 5 about the name of a restaurant which 6 the desired type of food, how expensive the restaurant is, the location of the restaurant, etc. These are goals to 7 information or knowledge, what we are calling 8 goals. These goals can be held by computers too; a computer might "want" to find out the location of a restaurant, and read a guide in order to do so 9 the same way as a person might. While such a goal would not 10 out of hunger in the case of the computer, it might well arise out of the "goal" to learn more about restaurants. A. sense D. learning G. acquire J. arise B. serves E. in H. what K. should C. account F. rise I. how L. information
When I settled in Chicago, my new city seemed so big and unfriendly. Then I had a 1 (physics) problem and had to go to hospital for a thorough examination. It seemed a small challenge compared to the one I was about to face, but things started to go wrong right from the 2 (begin). Not having a car or 3 (know) the city, I was de- pending on a couple of buses to get me from A to B. Although I'd left myself plenty of time, soon it was obvious I was going to be late, as I had 4 (mistake) boarded a bus that was taking me in the opposite direction. I 5 (get) off the bus and stood on the pavement not knowing what to do. I looked into the eyes of a 6 (strange), who was trying to get past me. 7 (surprise), instead of moving on, she stopped to ask if I was OK. After I explained my situation to her, she pointed to a bus stop across the street, where a bus would take me back into the city to my appointment. Sitting there waiting, I felt 8 (grate) that someone had been willing to help. Then, hearing a horn (喇叭) nearby, I looked up to see a car with my new friend 9 (wave) at me to get in. She had returned to offer me a lift to the hospital. Such unexpected 10 (kind) from a passer-by was a lovely gift to receive. As I climbed out of the car at the hospital and turned to thank her, she smiled and told me not to lose faith, for all things are possible.
