Mr. Peter Johnson, aged twenty-three, battled for half an hour to escape from his trapped car yesterday when it landed upside clown in three feet of water. Mr. Johnson took the only escape route—through the boot (后备箱). Mr. Johnson's car had finished up in a ditch (沟渠) at Romney, Kent, after skidding on ice and hitting a bank. "Fortunately, the water began to come in only slowly," Mr. Johnson said. "I couldn't force the doors because they were jammed against the walls of the ditch and dared not open the windows because I knew water would come flooding in." Mr. Johnson, a sweet salesman of Sitting Home, Kent, first tried to attract the attention of other motorists by sounding the horn and hammering on the roof and boot. Then he began his struggle to escape. Later he said, "It was really a haft penny that saved my life. It was the only coin I had in my pocket and I used it to unscrew the back seat to get into the boot. I hammered desperately with a hammer trying to make someone hear, but no help came." It took ten minutes to unscrew the seat, and a further five minutes to clear the samples from the boot. Then Mr. Johnson found a wrench (扳手) and began to work on the boot lock. Fifteen minutes passed by. "It was the only chance I had. Finally it gave, but as soon as I moved the boot lid, the water and mud poured in. I forced the lid down into the mud and scrambled clear as the car filled up." His hands and arms cut and bruised (擦伤), Mr. Johnson got to Beckett Farm nearby, where he was looked after by the farmer's wife, Mrs. Lucy Bates. Huddled in a blanket, he said, "That thirty minutes seemed like hours." "Only the tips of the car wheels were visible," the police said last night. "The vehicle had sunk into two feet of mud at the bottom of the ditch."

这是一个推断题,文章的题目是“A Frightful Experience”,文中也多次提到了这次经历是多么的危险,而且在最后一段里警察说“The vehicle had sunk into two feet of mud at the bottom of the ditch”,但没有说他的车将永远躺在沟底的泥里,因此无法判断题干是否正确。
Today, there are many avenues open to those who wish to continue their education. However, nearly all require some break in one's career in order to attend school at full time. Part-time education, that is, attending school at night or for one weekend a month, tends to drag the process out over time and puts the completion of a degree program out of reach of many people. Additionally, such programs require a fixed time commitment which can also impact negatively on one's career and family time. Of the many approaches to teaching and learning, however, perhaps the most flexible and accommodating is that called distance learning. Distance learning is an educational method which allows the students the flexibility to study at his or her own pace to achieve the academic goals which are so necessary in today's world. The time required to study may be set aside at the student's convenience with due regard to all life's other requirements. Additionally, the student may enroll in distance learning courses from virtually any place in the world, while continuing to pursue their chosen career. Tutorial assistance may be available via regular airmail, telephone, facsimile machine, teleconferencing and over the Internet. Good distance learning programs are characterized by the inclusion of a subject evaluation tool with every subject. This precludes the requirement for a student to travel away from home to take a test. Another characteristic of a good distance learning program is the equivalence of the distance learning course with the same subject materials as those students taking the course on the home campus. The resultant diploma or degree should also be the same whether distance learning or on-campus study is employed. The individuality of the professor/student relationship is another characteristic of a good distance learning program. In the final analysis, a good distance learning program has a place not only for the individual student but also the corporation or business that wants to work in partnership with their employees for the educational benefit, professional development, and business growth of the organization. Sponsoring distance learning programs for their employees gives the business the advantage of retaining career-minded people while contributing to their personal and professional growth through education.
1. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a disadvantage of part-time education?
A.It requires some break in one's career.
B.It tends to last too long for many people to complete a degree program.
C.It affects one's career.
D.It gives the student less time to share with the family.
A B C D
A
从文章第一段中“nearly all require some break in one's career in order to attend school full time”可以看出,参加全日制学习需要中断自己的事业,在第二段中作者又说“Part-time education, that is, attending school at night or for one weekend a month, tends to drag the process out over time and puts the completion of a degree program out of reach of many people. Additionally, such programs require a fixed time commitment which can also impact negatively on one's career and family time.”
2. Which of the following is NOT an advantage of distance learning?
A.The student may choose his or her own pace.
B.The student may study at any time to his or her convenience.
C.They can pursue their chosen career while studying.
D.Their tutorial assistance comes through regular airmail, telephone, facsimile machine, etc.
A B C D
D
在文章第三段,作者指出“Tutorial assistance may be available via regular airmail, telephone, facsimile machine, teleconferencing and over the Internet.”
3. What benefit will distance learning program bring to a business?
A.Recruitment of more talented people.
B.Good image of the business.
C.Better cooperation with universities.
D.Further training of employees and business growth.
A B C D
D
[考点] 细节题 [解析] 文章最后一段提到“a good distance learning program has a place not only for the individual student but also the corporation or business”即一个良好的远程教育计划不仅对个人有好处,而且对公司或者商业机构来说也是意义重大。
4. Good distance learning program has the following Characteristic EXCEPT ______.
A.distance learning course is the same as those taking by students in campus
B.the result diploma or degree should be same as on campus study
C.professor-student relationship is strictly one to one all through the course

Although abridged means "shortened", these dictionaries contain more than 150,000 entries and provide detailed definitions that are sufficient for most college students and general users. College dictionaries also contain separate lists of abbreviations, biographical and geographical names, foreign words and phrases, and tables of measures. Webster's Ⅱ· New Riverside University Dictionary and the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language are college dictionaries. ②Unabridged dictionaries contain as many as 500,000 entries and provide detailed definitions and extensive word histories (etymologies). These dictionaries, possibly in several volumes and mostly found in libraries, are excellent sources for scholarly inquiries. Unabridged dictionaries include the Oxford English Dictionary and the Random House Dictionary of the English Language. ③A dictionary entry has many elements: multiple definitions, syllabication, preferred spelling and pronunciation (some words have more than one acceptable spelling and pronunciation), and part-of-speech labels. Some entries also include plurals and capitalized forms, synonyms, antonyms, and derivatives. Americanisms and etymologies may be provided along with usage notes, cross-references, and idioms. ④If you prefer using the dictionary on a computer, you can obtain CD-ROM versions of many major dictionaries. In addition, you can access numerous dictionaries, such as Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, on the Internet. Online dictionaries allow you to enter a search word (you even get help with spelling) to see a definition, and sometimes even an illustration. Online dictionaries also offer additional features, such as word games, language tips, and amusing facts about words. Some online dictionary services allow you to access numerous dictionaries, both general and specialized, in no search. ⑤Specialized dictionaries provide in-depth information about a certain field. For example, there are dictionaries for the specialized vocabularies of law, computer technology, and medicine. In addition, there are dictionaries of synonyms, cliches, slang, and even regional expressions, such as the Dictionary of American Regional English (DARE). There are also dictionaries of foreign languages, famous people's names, literary characters' names and place names.

As Margie sat in church that morning, she practised in her mind over and over what she would say. 1 The service seemed to drag on and on. Finally, the pastor (牧师) uttered the words Margie had been expecting all the morning, "This is a special time of year when everyone around the world celebrates peace and goodwill toward our fellow men. 2 We cannot fulfill everyone's wish, but we would like to try and fulfill a few. As I call your name, please come forward and tell us about your Christmas wish." 3 Margie was the last and the youngest to speak. As she looked at the congregation (会众), she spoke confidently, "I would like for my grandma to attend church. She cannot walk, and she and my grandpa have to stay at home. They look forward to coming so much. So that is what I wish for. And please don't tell them, for it needs to be a surprise." Riding home with her aunts, Margie could tell they were speaking in low tones about her wish. She hoped that they would keep her secret. As the next Sunday came around, Margie was getting ready for church when Grandma asked, "Why are you so nervous? You haven't sat still all morning." " 4 " "Of course it will," said her grandma with a chuckle. "It's almost Christmas, you know." B
[考点] 前后呼应 [解析] 此句定位于第一段开篇,文章第一句中提到“She practised in her mind over and over what she would say.”
2.
E
[考点] 前后呼应 [解析] 由此段末尾“As I call your name, please come forward and tell us about your Christmas wish.”
[考点] 逻辑关系 [解析] 因为前一句说“look out of the front window.”
Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always 1 such people, but I also explain that there's a big difference between "being a writer" and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of 2 and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. "You've got to want to write," I say to them, "not want to be a writer." The reality is that writing is a 3 , private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never 4 . When I left a 20-year career in the US Coast Guard to become a freelancewriter(自由撰稿人), I had no 5 at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn't even matter that it was 6 and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a 7 writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn't gotten a break and began to 8 myself. It was so hard to sell a story that I 9 made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn't going to be one of those people who die wondering, what if? I would keep putting my dream to the test—even though it meant living with 10 and fear of failure. This is the Shadow land of hope, and anyone with a dream learn to live there. A. barely B. genuine C. rewarded D. doubt E. lonely F. poverty G. persuade H. prospects I. uncertainty J. encourage K. wealth L. cold
My brother is leaving for college soon, and my mom has been pestering (纠缠) him to clean out his desk. Most 1 (significance) of these items in the desk is his journal, which has been filled with 2 (create) writing. I always make fun of his ideas, but he didn't give up, and now he plans on using his college 3 (educate) to write books from those stories one day. As I watch my brother throw out some papers, I realize how much we have 4 (grow) up. My brother looks like a man with a 5 (collar) shirt and dress pants. I think back to how he looked in elementary school—funny glasses and constant 6 (optimistic) as he wrote in his journal. I can't believe he's going to college now. He was planning a trip for us to go to visit our cousin, but I have decided he should go without me. "Have fun on your own, "I said with heavy eyes. Then I tell him not to call for advice while he is away, because it would be his time, not 7 (we). I give him a hug and tell him to be 8 (exciting) about his trip. I know he is ready for the next four years. I'll be heartbroken the day he leaves, but I'll use those 9 (emotional) as motivation to make the most of my last year in high school. I hand him his journal and tell him not to leave his 10 (create) behind. Now it's time to get ready for my next four years, and my new, mature sense of self will help me through it.
1.
significant
[考点] 形容词 [解析] 从is his journal结构中可知most ______(significance)of these items在句中作主语,再根据most一词可以判断出此短语应该类似于the most important of all,此处空格应该填入一个形容词构成形容词的最高级结构,故此处答案为significance的形容词形式significant。
Nowadays, going abroad for studies is enjoying a striking popularity among adolescents. There are a great many advantages of studying overseas. First and foremost, living and studying abroad offers students a different perspective of the world. On a university campus, international students are likely to encounter their counterparts from various countries and areas and are exposed to diverse ideas and values. What is more, overseas experience is the best opportunity for the real-life use of foreign languages. There is no better opportunity to improve second-language skills than living in the country in which it is spoken. Generally peaking, it is my view that although going abroad is expensive and perhaps painful, the payoff is worthwhile. In the first place, in addition to knowledge, overseas students can gain precious experiences that those who stay at home will never have. Furthermore, overseas experience, frustrating and painful as it may be, is conducive to the growth of adolescents.
