Passage 1
China's return to GATI is prompted by its drive of reforms and opening to the outside world. Now GATT has 103 regular signatory parties(正式缔约方). Besides, close to 30 countries and regions have expressed their willingness to honor GATT. The trade value between the signatory parties makes up to 90% of the present-day world trade value. GATT's regulations on multilateral trade have obviously accepted by most countries of the world. GATT is giving its weight on economic development in the world as an all-sided global economic body. China is one of the 23 original signatory parties. But as Taiwan announced its illegal withdrawal from GATT in 1950, the mainland of China has maintained no relations with GATT.
In the early days of the 1980s when the reforms and opening were first introduced, China re-stored its contract with GATT.

If Europeans aren't bursting to give the single market a coming-out party, it may simply be that markets aren't the kinds of things people gush about, as EC commission president Jacques Delors has often noted. The fact that free movement of people—an aspect of the market that will be most evident to the average person—is not yet a reality also plays a role.
Another explanation is that many of the market's original 282 directives have already been implemented.
"By Jan. 1 we will have passed 95 per cent of what we sought in 1986 to create the single market, and much of that will already have been translated into national law," says Perissich. "Adjustment to the market has been going on for years and won't be expected overnight."

Sino-US venture up to make new form of rapid transport in Chengdu.
The world's first magnetic levitation plane (magplane) is expected to be built in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.
Sources from the Chengdu municipal trade and economic committee revealed that US Commercial Co-operation Bank Group, Chengdu Airplane Group and Sichuan Zhineng Rare Earth Group will join hands to develop the high-speed form of transport, which combines elements of conventional trains and aircraft.
A specific research and development base with a 20-kilometer-long demonstration magplane line is to be built in Chengdu.
Compared with the magnetic levitation train (maglev), the magplane is faster, cheaper, lighter and has stronger slope-climbing ability.
The proposed magplane will have a levitating height of 50 - 150 millimeters, be 48-meters long and able to travel at speeds over 500 kilometers per hour.
By contrast, the maglev has a levitating height of 8 - 10 millimeters, a length of 10 - 15 meters and speed of 100 kilometers per hour.
After China's first maglev produced by Changchun Passenger Train Co. Ltd rolled off the tracks on August 14, the country became the third nation in the world to master the technology after Germany and Japan.
The magplane, however, is still on the drawing boards.
The magplane technology was developed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The US Commercial Co-operation Bank Group purchased the right of the technology.
