From Our Darkest Day, Our Brightest Hope That awful September morning, when jet-liners rained from the sky, and the worst anyone could imagine seemed possible, the Welch sisters had more reason than most to panic. Rumors of violent death swirled around their schools near Alexandria, Va., and Aubrey, Alyssa, Alana and Ashley knew for certain that their father had headed to work early that morning at the Pentagon "I was scared," says Alyssa, 10, the youngest. "I thought, 'Oh, no! My dad works in the west ring, where they're saying the plane hit!'" Lt. Col. Tracy L. Welch survived that day because he was walking to a meeting when Flight 77 hit the Pentagon. But it was hours before his daughters learned that their father was alive. The family's brush with disaster made the girls sensitive to the suffering of those who weren't so lucky. Then something important started, as it often does, with a simple idea. A Flood of Support On September 12, the girls decided to hold a car wash and donate the proceeds to the American Red Cross. They called their effort "Wash America: Help Wash Away the Hurt" and contacted local radio stations to get the word out. Then the sisters set to work with buckets and water. They raised $10,000 the first day, before the idea shot cross-country like water from a fire hose Last fall, people in 31 states scrubbed cars clean for Wash America. And when the suds (肥皂泡) were dry, they'd raised more than $85,000 for the families of the victims. "I never thought kids could change the world," says Aubrey, 15. "But now I know that when people come together, even average kids like us, you can do something." Stories like the Welch sisters are proof that, though Sept. 11 was one of our nation's darkest days, Americans response to the tragedy has been one of the brightest chapters in our history. After the attacks, people everywhere asked instinctively, "What can I do?" And perhaps no group has been more anxious to help with the healing process than young people. Today, encouraged by President Bush's call to service and the newly formed USA Freedom Corps, record numbers of young volunteers are comforting victims of the terrorist attacks and tackling ongoing problems such as hunger and homelessness. And as National Volunteer Week begins today, communities across the country will honor those who are healing the world. The Greatest Generation In January, millions of youths took up the Do Something organization's "Kindness & Justice Challenge", dedicating two weeks to good deeds, like gathering supplies for schools in need. By April, through a 4-H program, youth and adults had pledged a staggering 3.4 million hours to community service. Beginning this Friday on National Youth Service Day, organizers expect to shatter turnout records. PARADE is a sponsor of this annual event, which celebrates the year round efforts of young volunteers. "People ask whether this generation is up for the challenges we face." says Steve Culbertson, president of Youth Service America, the organizer of the event. "But we have the greatest generation of young Americans right under our noses. Youths today are volunteering more than any other generation in history. The challenge is making enough room for the amazing energy they bring to the problem-solving table." The Time to Help Is Now The energy of 18-year-old Marquise McGraw could light up an entire New York City neighborhood. Marquise, a gifted, college-bound student, tutors young kids in science and, as part of his 4-H program, delivers computer presentations on the importance of staying in school. "I live in the projects," Marquise says, "and kids here don't always have the right role models. I wanted to encourage kids to follow in my footsteps." The attacks on his city made Marquise even more dedicated to service. Since September, he's been tutoring five days a week. "Sep. 11 made me reconsider myself as a New Yorker and an American," Marquise says, "I realized you can't just say you'll help people later. It made me get to work." Lately, Don Floyd, president and CEO of the National 4-H Council, has noticed many reactions like Marquise's. "Before Sept. 11, we took our volunteer spirit for granted, like we took so many things for granted," he says. "But volunteerism has become more important since Sept. 11. I think it's because helping others knits us together. It makes us stronger." Inside the "Hate-Free Zone" Like many young volunteers, Gerardo Jerry Jimenez, 19, from Salem, Ore., was inspired by Sept. 11 to fight harder against forces that were pulling his community apart. For years, Jerry had helped children threatened with domestic violence to find shelter. But in late September, fearing Muslims would face a blood of intolerance, Jerry and his youth group invited Muslim teens to a town hall meeting to offer their support. Then Jerry helped post "hate-free zone" signs in places where Muslims might face discrimination. "Learning that I could help others gave me more hope than I ever had," he explains, "Community service changed my life." The honor roll of young people who've changed others' lives is endless. Prudential Spirit of Community award-winner Rebecca Hill, 17, of Littleton, Colo., organized a concert called "United We Sing" and raised $24,000 for the American Red Cross. And there's Kristen Hargis, 10, of Charlotte, N.C., who collected teddy bears and distributed them to New York City children traumatized (使受精神创伤) by the attacks. For the many Americans still shocked from the attack on our country, and for millions of others whose problems require urgent attention, there is the promise that a newly-mobilized army of young volunteers is on the march to make a difference. "So often since Sept. 11, we've heard people say that America changed forever," says Steve Culbertson. "With young people like these leading the way, we have changed forever. We're better than before."

The scenery is beautiful, and if it gets too hot we can dive in whenever we feel like it. The river's really calm this time of the year, no rapids to deal with. M: That's a relief. Passage One Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.
[解析] 26-28 During the summer you should be even more careful than usual of the food you prepare. Food spoils faster in hot weather than in cold weather. When you are shopping, purchase frozen and refrigerated foods at last. Don't make long stops on the way home, because frozen foods could become soft or warm. Using insulated bags helps keep food cold until you can get home. Milk and milk products should be refrigerated immediately. When camping or picnicking, or at any time [27] when refrigeration isn't available, use special dry food. Don't leave foods in a hot car or beach bag. Picnic favorites like meat, chicken, and egg salad should be kept in a cooler. Above all, if a food doesn't seem to be normal in odor or appearance, [28] discard it immediately. Don't taste it. 26.What is the main topic of the talk?
[解析] 29-31 Why do so many people live to a healthy old age in certain parts of the world? [31] What is the secret of their long lives? Three things seem to be very important: [29] fresh air, fresh food and a simple way of life. People work near their homes in the clean, mountain air instead of traveling long distances to work by car, bus or train. They do not sit all day in busy offices or factories, but work hard outdoors in the fields. They take more exercise and eat less food than people in the cities of the West. For years the Hunzas of the Himalayas did not need policemen, lawyers or doctors. There was no crime, no divorce and not much illness in their society. [30] They were a happy, peaceful people, famous all over India for their long, healthy lives. 29.According to the passage, what are the factors essential to a long life?
另外选项A中的much food,B中的 less exercise和D中的much food都不利身体健康。

C.They work hard outdoors in the fields and eat less food.
D.There were few crimes, few divorces and not much illness in their society.
A B C D
A
Which of the following is true of people of the Himalayas?
[解析] 32-35 A few months ago, [32] a team of interviewers were sent to schools to find out why children are prejudiced against science. Their answer provided this surprising picture of a typical scientist: they thought [33] a scientist is a rather dull person who spends all day working in a laboratory, wearing a white coat and making things that smell bad. They thought that scientists usually aren't very interesting and don't talk about anything but science. They don't play games well and they aren't attractive to the opposite sex. They also did not realize that women are as capable of becoming scientists as men. On the other hand, [34] an art graduate is seen as a much livelier person. Arts graduates are thought to have a better sense of humor, to be interested in sports and pop music and to be considered attractive. When you understand these misconceptions which children have, it is only logical that most of them want to study arts rather than science. 32.According to the passage, who is interviewed?
According to the author, why do kids want to study arts rather than science?
[点睛] 选项A(学艺术可以挣更多钱)文中未提及,也可排除选项C(学习科学更困难)和D(学习艺术更有趣),因为文章只说了艺术家和科学家的形象。

Passage One The dancers stand motionless at their position and the room grows silent. But as the music starts, they began to move, bending, turning and waving their fans gracefully as they perform a traditional Japanese dance. Yoshihiro Kuroki watches in silence, occasionally making notes. But as the dance ends, he beams with happiness. The performance has been flawless. There have been many performances of traditional Japanese dances over the centuries, but this one is unique, because it is performed not by human dancers but by robots. And the performance takes place not in a dance studio but in a laboratory of Sony Corp.'s Entertainment Robot Co. in Shinagawa, Japan, where Kuroki is general manager. He is the mastermind behind a series of even more capable humanoid entertainment robots, starting with the Sony Dream Robot, or SDR, in 1997, up to the current QRIO in 2003. These delightful machines are only 58 cm tall, about the size of a newborn infant, weigh about 7 kg, and move with 38 degrees of freedom, each with its own servomotor QRIO's predecessor, the SDR4X, announced in 2002, can walk, dance, sing, speak, recognize faces, and understand continuous speech. Each robot has two charge-coupled-device cameras to detect color and position and can locate a colored ball, move toward it, and kick it into a goal. It also has contact sensors in several joints to avoid pinching real human fingers. Seeing the robot perform, it is difficult to remember that there is no sentience (知觉) behind those glass eyes.

[解析] 选项C符合第2段最后一句“He is the mastermind behind a series of... robots”。
3. Which aspect of the robots is NOT mentioned in the passage?
Passage Two People appear to be born to compute. The numerical skills of children develop so early and so inexorably (坚定地) that it is easy to imagine an internal clock of mathematical maturity guiding their growth. Not long after learning to walk and talk, they can set the table with impressive accuracy one plate, one knife, one spoon, one fork, for each of the five chairs. Soon they are capable of noting that they have placed five knives, five spoons, and five forks on the table and, a bit later, that this amounts to fifteen pieces of silverware. Having thus mastered addition, they move on to subtraction, It seems almost reasonable to expect that if a child were secluded on a desert island at birth and retrieved seven years later, he or she could enter a second-grade mathematics class without any serious problems of intellectual adjustment. Of course, the truth is not so simple. In this century, the work of cognitive psychologists has illuminated the subtle forms of daily learning on which intellectual progress depends. Children were observed as they slowly grasped or, as the case might be, bumped into—concepts that adults take for granted, as they refused, for instance, to concede that quantity is unchanged as water pours from a short stout glass into a tall thin one. Psychologists have since demonstrated that young children, when asked to count the pencils in a pile, readily report the number of blue or red pencils, but must be coaxed (说服) into finding the total. Such studies have suggested that the rudiments (基本原理) of mathematics are mastered gradually, and with effort. They have also suggested that the very concept of abstract numbers the idea of a oneness, a twoness, a threeness that applies to any class of objects and is prerequisite (先决条件) for doing anything more mathematically demanding than setting a table is itself far from innate.
1. After children have helped to set the table with impressive accuracy, they ______.

A person's home is as much a reflection of his personality as the clothes he wears, the food he eats and the friends with whom he spends his time. Depending on personality, most have in mind a(n)" 1 home". But in general, and especially for the student or new wage earners, there are practical 2 of cash and location on achieving that idea. Agencies are allowed to charge a fee, usually the 20 of the first week's rent, if you take accommodation they have found for you.
虽然call in和call upon都有“拜访”的意思,但 call in后面不能直接跟宾语,“拜访某人/某地”必须是call in on sb./call in at someplace。 call over(点名,按顺序读出)和call out(大声叫唤)明显与句意不符。
9.
A.always
B.rarely
C.little
D.sometimes
A B C D
B
rarely和little都有否定意义,但little作为限定词修饰名词时,名词前的定冠词the必须去掉,即只能说there is little responsibility,所以C不能选,B是正确答案。
equivalent(等价物),文中(the fee is) the equivalent of the first week's rent表示“中介费相当于第一周的租金”,所以B是正确答案。 similarity(相似性,类似点)在意思上与句意相差太远。
Part Ⅵ Translation Directions:Complete the sentences on Answer Sheet 2 by translating into English the Chinese given in the brackets.
1. Would you mind __________ (与我换一换位置) so that I can be nearer the fire?
Whoever respects others/Anyone who respects others
如:① No matter which you choose, you will be satisfied.=Whichever you choose,... ② No matter when the invaders come, they will be Wiped out clean.=Whenever the invaders come,... 如:① Whoever breaks the law will be punished.(主语从句) ② Talk to me about what ever is troubling you.(宾语从句)
3. Large ancient animals are supposed __________ (曾经生活在这个地区).
4. All flights __________ (由于暴雪而被取消), many passengers could do nothing but take the train.
having been canceled because of the snowstorm
5. I've __________ (向几所美国学校申请了) scholarships.
applied to several American schools for
[解析] 考查apply“申请”这个词的用法:apply to... for sth.
