A.To explain the high drop-out rate in the sport of competitive swimming
B.To enlist support from parents for scholarship contributions
C.To recruit swimmers from other sports
D.To raise funds for a swimming competition
A B C D
A
[解析] 11-13 Listen to a talk given by a college coach. Now that you've listened to me talk about all the rewarding aspects of competitive swimming, I'd like to talk to you about some of the sacrifices necessary to become a dedicated swimmer. Competitive swimming is one of the most demanding of all sports. Since all of you today are interested in joining the swim team, you might be wondering where your training here can lead. That's a good question and not a very easy one to answer. There's a high attrition rate among competitive swimmers. If we compare swimming to a sport like running, you will note that runners will often continue to train and compete in races after the age of thirty, but most swimmers will stop competing after graduate from college. There are probably two major reasons for this. The first is financial. Unlike runners, tennis, players, or golfers, swimmers can not make much money in the sports. Swimmers compete for the pleasure and the glory of winning, not for the monetary rewards. The athletic scholarships the colleges award to the top swimmers are probably the culminating financial rewards the swimmers receive for their swimming abilities. The second reason for the high attrition rate is a physical one. Most top competitive swimmers undergo grueling workouts four hours a day, eleven months out of the year. Swimmers pay a heavy price in developing the physical and mental discipline necessary for swimming excellence. For most swimmers this type of schedule is too demanding in terms of time and too draining in terms of physical energy. So, knowing all this, if' you are still enthusiastic about competitive swimming, I'd like to hand out this schedule of tryouts. 11. What is the purpose of this talk?

Passage Two Questions 14 to 16 are based on the passage you have just heard.
[解析] 14-16 Listen to some introductory remarks taken from a history lecture. We usually think of history as the stow of important people or events. But some historians are also interest ed in the daily lives of ordinary people. We can get this kind of information from written documents like diaries, town records, etc. But strange as this may seem, we can also learn a lot from studying old family portraits. The number of children in a portrait, for example, indicates the size of the family. The types of clothing family members wore for the portrait suggest the popular fashions of the time. The objects children hold in their hands can give clue about the games they played, and their bobbies. The background of a family portrait gives historians an idea of room sizes and furnishings, and even the wealth and social position of the family. All of these details help historians understand more about the everyday lives of some of the ordinary people from the past. 14. What is the main topic of the lecture?

C.The advisability of frequent changes in dry-cleaning
D.Experimental printing with oil-based inks
A B C D

[解析] 17-20 Listen to a talk. Its always a pleasure to show visitors the different parts of our newspaper operation. Please step this way. Here you see our printing presses, and you'll probably notice the smell of the printer's ink This is where the pa per is printed. Printing is a really messy process because of the black, oil - based ink we use. You've read news papers and come away with the black ink all over your hands, and then probably got, it on your clothes or on the woodwork at home, fight? That may change soon, with the use of a different type of ink. Several major daily newspapers are now trying out a new printing process called 'flexography'. This process produces smear--free pages that are remarkably clean and do not smudge. Flexography is often referred to as "flexo". "Flexo" presses use water- based inks that dry quickly, not like the standard oil- based inks that take much longer to dry. The new flexography inking process is also simpler and faster than the standard method. There's one major problem, though. The ink may dry too quickly, and thereby gum up the machines. It could obstruct the pres scs, so that they won't work right, or it might cause them to break down altogether. If the machines clog too easily, the process will have to be changed and retested. There's a possibility that our newspaper will convert to the flexography process sometime soon. In any ease, our readers have already expressed a definite preference for the new smudge less papers, and dean bands. 17. What is the main topic of the talk?

Meanwhile he did what he could to aid the Confederate army in protecting the homeland from the northern invader. One evening while Farquhar and his wife were sitting on a bench near the entrance to his grounds, a gray-clad soldier rode up to the gate and asked for a drink of water. Meanwhile her husband asked for news from the front. The Yanks are repairing the railroads," the man said, "and they are getting ready for an other advance. They have reached the Owl Creek Bridge, put it in order, and have built a fort on the north side of the creek. The commander has issued an order, which is posted everywhere, saying that any civilian caught interfering with the railroad, its bridges, tunnels, or the trains, will be hanged. I saw the order. "How far is it to the bridge?" Farquhar asked. "About thirty miles." "Is there a Union Force beyond this side of the bridge?" "No. The Yanks are not quite ready to advance. Passage Two Jazz is America's contribution to popular music. In contrast to classical music, ,which follows formal European traditions, jazz is spontaneous and free-form. It bubbles with energy, expressing the moods, interests and emotions of the people. The origins of this music are as interesting as the music itself. Jazz was invented by American Negroes, or blacks, as they are called today, who were brought to the Southern states as slaves. They were sold to plantation owners and forced to work long hours in the cotton and to bacco fields. This work was hard and life was short. When a Negro died, his friends and relatives formed a procession to carry the body to the cemetery. A band often accompanied the procession. On the way to the cemetery the band played slow, solemn music suited to the occasion. But on the way, home the mood changed. Spirits lifted. Everybody was happy. Death had removed one of their members, but the living were glad to be a live. The band played happy music, improvising on both the harmony and the melody of the tunes presented at the funeral. This music made everyone want to dance. It was an early form of jazz. But there were other influences, too. Music has always been important in Negro life. Coming mainly from West Africa, the blacks who were brought to America already possessed a rich musical tradition. This music centered in religious ceremonies in which dancing, singing, clapping, and stamping to the beat of a drum were important forms of musical and rhythmic expression. As these people settled in to their new life in the plantation of the South, music retained its importance. In the fields, they made up work songs. Singing made the hard work go faster. And as the people were converted to Christianity, they composed lovely spirituals which have become a permanent part of American music. Jazz belongs to the people, but popular taste is changeable. Jazz had to keep up to date. over the last half century it has changed many times in form, style, and tempo. Each change added something new.
1. In which aspect jazz is different from classical music?
A.Jazz is Americas contribution to popular music.
B.Jazz is coming from natural impulse and has free form.
C.Jazz sounds more modern than classical music.
D.Jazz expresses the moods, interest, and emotions of the people.
Passage Three To many non-scientists, Dolly's cloning raised the great fear of human cloning. The Pope promptly called for a worldwide ban on human cloning. The US National Bioethics Advisory Committee als0 recommended a ban--for safety reasons, such as the risk to cloned children from cancer-causing cells of the donor and the risk of his aging prematurely. American President Clinton stopped government-funded research on human cloning and put a bill before Congress proposing to outlaw such research for five years. A US opinion poll found 90 percent opposition to human cloning. By the end of 1997, the 40-nation Council of Europe had imposed the first legally binding international ban on human cloning. Cloning has also been criticized for its effects on the experimental animals. At birth, lambs and cows cloned from embryos can be twice the usual size, creating considerable stress on the surrogate mother. Transgenic animals can experience unpleasant changes in their growth rates, physical condition or behavior. The "Beltsville pig", for instance, was created by the US Department of Agriculture at Beltsville, Maryland, to produce human growth hormone. The pig grew all right, but suffered severely from bone and joint problems. There is also the question of pre mature aging. Do cloned animals wear out faster? Genes tend to accumulate wear and tear with age. This may mean that 18-month-old Dolly really has the genes and physiology of an eight-year old. If so, will she age and die faster than her non-cloned pals. The scientists are watching closely. Right now, cloning research is continuing at speed. Researchers know how to grow human tissue cloned from aborted embryos, keeping it alive in laboratories as a potentially inexhaustible source of replacement tissue to plant onto sick people. One US company, Reprogenesis, claims to have induced the growth of nipples on breast tissue, Some gene therapy researchers are even predicting that, within 10 to 20 years, the biggest problem for genetics researchers--permanent alteration of human gene lines--will be an accepted medical practice. For all the crazy activity and heated talk, it may be some time before we see the promise of the new techniques. And those groups of identical people crowded across the continents? They are unlikely to happen. Right now, the techniques are still very costly and very inefficient. No ting that Dolly was the only one of 277 cloned eggs to survive, Jim McWhir of the Roslin Institute says that,, for now, human cloning "is completely impracticable, especially considering that if s much pleasanter making children in the classical way". And, even if it does become less costly and more efficient in future, who would really want to change that?

Passage Four Today Sri Landka is a world of modern comforts and complexities, a nation of 18 million people gathered from waves of conquest, trade, and colonization, a nation still struggling to find unity. For the past 13 years it has been wracked with ethnic violence and social insurrection in which some 100,000 islanders have died or simply disappeared. Veddas and other tribes were already here when the Indo-Aryan Sinhalese arrived from northern India around 500 B. C. The Sinhalese, who now number 13.5 million on the island, eventually embraced Theravada Buddhism and constructed city-kingdoms that thrived in the dry, north central plain, using sophisticated irrigation canals and reservoirs. Tamils, a Dravidian people, later came from southern India and in the 13th century established a Hindu kingdom in the north. Three million Tamils now make up Sri Lanka's largest minority group. European invaders exploited Ceylon, as it was known until 1972, for its deep ports, spices, and gems: The Portuguese came in the early 16th century, the Dutch in the 17th, and the British in the late 18th. Sri Lanka means "blessed island" in Sinhala, and at its best it has been an en lightened, multiethnic democracy; an India without the crushing social problems. Its 90 percent literacy rate is among the highest in southern Asia; its population growth rate of 1.3 percent is very low. Caste discrimination is minimal, and women seem fully engaged in the life of the nation. But when I arrive in the fall of 1995, Sri Lanka is mired in a civil war. The government, dominated by Sinhalese, is battling the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE, or simply, tigers), guerrillas who demand a separate state for Tamils. The army has launched a major offensive against Jaffna, the Tiger's stronghold, and conversations about the future soon change back to the war that has polarized the nation and blackened many hearts.

Part Ⅴ Writing Directions: For this part ,you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic Physical Pastime or Intellectual one? You should write your composition in about 120 words and you should base it on the outline given below:
1. Outline: 1. Many people enjoy very active, physical recreation. 2. Other people prefer to spend their spare time participating in more intellectual activities. 3. Your viewpoint.
Physical pastime or Intellectual one?
Many people are inclined to take active physical recreation, like sports , camping and fishing in their leisure time, while others would rather participate in more intellectual activities, like reading , listening to music, watching films and so on. Although ifs unreasonable and impossible to tell which one is absolutely better than the other, in my opinion, it seems more advisable for the young people about 20~25 years old to take the latter which is in accordance with their unique characteristics. First, compared with physical activities, intellectual ones become more urgent and important . Since the young generation full of energy are at their highest points to learn and explore , there is no doubt that they should make full use of their golden age to enrich knowledge , cultivate their mind , broaden their vision, and develop their tastes. Thus, they will be more creative and contributed to the society as they set out to their own careers. Second , intellectual activities are more helpful for the young people to contact with their surroundings, of both the past and the present. For example , through reading one can learn about the wisdom and philosophy held by great figures in history, which may guide him to lead a more intelligent way of life. Watching films or listening to music can help a person grasp the contemporary cultural tendency and accordingly keep up with the fast--developing world. It is obvious that simple physical exercises can't achieve all of these. Of course, I want to make it clear that I don't mean physical activities are less helpful to life than intellectual ones. People should have their own choices on the basis of their different life styles, characters, hobbies and health. Yet ,for the young people of my age ,I suppose the latter be more practical and meaningful. Take more intellectual activities when you are young, which will benefit you for your whole life.
