Even though I seem to be over the worst of it, I don't want to give the bug to anyone in the office. Alice: Yes. Better not.
1.
C
under the weather“不在状态”,run-down“崩溃,疲倦”。
Dialogue Two A. great minds think alike B. We could do it first thing tomorrow morning C. We still have to do about ten more Nancy: How many orders do we still need to pack, Gilbert? Nancy: Why not! These orders are not urgent. 2 Gibert: All right. Let's call it quits and go home. Neal: See, 3 !
1.
C

Passage One An unidentified wit once said, "laugh, and the world laughs with you. Snore, and you sleep alone." Yet snoring is far from a laughing matter, as those unfortunates with good hearing, who are rightly subjected to the sounds of the snoring disorder, will testify. It has been estimated that one of eight Americans snores: this means that there are approximately 21 million people—women as well as men—who render an unpleasant sound when they are asleep. And assuming that each snorer disturbs the sleep of at least one other person, it necessarily follows that there are 21 million unhappy listeners. While a sleeping person breathes, either in or out, several structures in his nose and throat generate the snoring. The sounds, coming from the soft palate and other soft structures of the throat, are caused by vibratory responses to inflowing and outflowing air. When the soft tissues of the mouth and throat come close to the lining of the throat, the vibrations that occur are caused by the position of the tongue. In short, the noise made by snoring can be compared to the noise when breezes flutter a flag on a pole. The frequency of the vibrations depends on the size, density, and elasticity of the affected tissues and on the force of the air flow. Although it is usually the process of in haling or exhaling through the mouth that cause snoring, short snores come from the nose of an open-mouthed sleeper. In all fairness to snorers, however, it should be emphasized that snoring is an involuntary out which stops as the offender is awakened.
1. The snoring is caused by ______.
A.the soft palate and other structures of the throat
B.the inflowing and outflowing air through the nose
C.the inflowing and outflowing air through mouth
D.the vibrations as a result of the inflowing and outflowing air
A B C D
D
[解析] 从选项中的高频词inflowing and outflowing可以准确定位到第二段的中间部分——The sounds, ..., are caused by the vibratory responses to inflowing and outflowing air。
2. If a person produces short snores, most probably he has ______.
A.a soft palate
B.a big nose
C.an open mouth
D.a small throat
A B C D
C
[解析] 通过short snores定位于文章倒数第二句话short snores come from the nose of an open-mouthed sleeper。
3. The author's attitude towards the snorers is ______.
A.objective
B.subjective
C.sympathetic
D.annoyed
A B C D
A
Passage Two Being sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life. Relationships with family, friends, neighbours, even pets, will all do the trick, but the biggest longevity (长寿) boost seems to come from marriage or an equivalent relationship. The effect was first noted in 1858 by William Fair, who wrote that widows and widowers (鳏夫) were at a much higher risk of dying than their married peers. Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man's life and two to a woman's. The effect holds for all causes of death, whether illness, accident or self-harm. Even if the odds are stacked against you, marriage can more than compensate. Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart. Likewise, a married man who smokes more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn't smoke. There's a flip side, however, as partners are more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their spouse's death, and caring for a spouse with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems. Even so, the odds favour marriage. In a 30-years study of more than 10,000 people, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects. So how does it work? The effects are complex, affected by socio-economic factors, health-service provision, emotional support and other more physiological (生理的) mechanisms. For example, social contact can boost development of the brain and immune system, leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life. People in supportive relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner. A life partner, children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live to 100. The ultimate social network is still being mapped out, but Christakis says: "People are interconnected, so their health is interconnected."
1. William Farr's study and other studies show that ______.
A.social life provides an effective cure for illness
B.being sociable helps improve one's quality of life
C.women benefit more than men from marriage
D.marriage contributes a great deal to longevity
A B C D
D
[解析] 根据文章第一段中the biggest longevity(长寿) boost seems to come from marriage...
2. Linda Waite's studies support the idea that ______.
A.older men should quit smoking to stay healthy
B.marriage can help make up for ill health
C.the married are happier than the unmarried
D.unmarried people are likely to suffer in later life
4. What does the author say about social networks?
A.They have effects similar to those of a marriage.
B.They help develop people's community spirit.
C.They provide timely support for those in need.
D.They help relieve people of their life's burdens.
A B C D
A
[解析] 由all kinds of social networks have similar effects可推断选择A项。
5. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.It's important that we develop a social network when young.
B.To stay healthy, one should have a proper social network.
C.Getting a divorce means risking a reduced life span.
D.We should share our social networks with each other.
A B C D
B
而Christakis的这句“People are interconnected,so their health is interconnected.”
Passage Three Rescuers have found the bodies of over 130 people killed in two ferry disasters in Bangladesh. The accidents happened during a storm that hit the country on April 21. Hundreds more are missing or feared dead. The two ferries sank in different rivers near the capital city of Dhaka as strong winds and rain hit the South Asian country. The government has since banned all ferries and other boats from travelling at night during the April-May stormy season. One of the ferries, MV Mitali, was carrying far more people than it was supposed to. About 400 passengers fitted into a space made for just 300, police said the second ferry carried about 100 passengers. "The number of deaths is certain to rise," said an official in charge of the rescue work. "No one really knows how many people were on board or how many of them survived." Ferries in Bangladesh don't always keep passenger lists, making it difficult to determine the exact number of people on board. Besides the ferry accidents, at least 40 people were killed and 400 injured by lightning strikes, falling houses and trees and the sinking of small boats. Storms are common this time of year in Bangladesh, as are boating accidents. Ferry disasters take away hundreds of lives every year in a nation of 130 million people. Officials blame these river accidents on a lack of safety measures, too many passengers in boats and not enough checks on weather conditions. Ferries are a common means of transport in Bangladesh. It is a country covered by about 230 rivers. Some 20,000 ferries use the nation's waterways (水路) every year. And many of them are dangerously overcrowded Since 1977, more than 3,000 people have died in some 260 boating accidents.
1. How many people have been found dead in the two ferry disasters?
Passage Four In general, our society is becoming one of giant enterprises directed by a bureaucratic (官僚主义的) management in which man becomes a small, well-oiled cog in the machinery. The oiling is done with higher wages, well-ventilated factories and piped music, and by psychologists and "human-relations" experts; yet all this oiling does not alter the fact that man has become powerless, that he does not wholeheartedly participate in his work and that he is bored with it. In fact, the blue and the white-collar workers have become economic puppets who dance to the tune of automated machines and bureaucratic management. The worker and employee are anxious, not only because they might find themselves out of a job; they are anxious also because they are unable to acquire any real satisfaction or interest in life. They live and die without ever having confronted the fundamental realities of human existence as emotionally and intellectually independent and productive human beings. Those higher up on the social ladder are no less anxious. Their lives are no less empty than those of their subordinates. They are even more insecure in some respects. They are in a highly competitive race. To be promoted or to fall behind is not a matter of salary but even more a matter of self-respect. When they apply for their first job, they are tested for intelligence as well as for the tight mixture of submissiveness and independence. From that moment on they are tested again and again by the psychologists, for whom testing is a big business, and by their superiors, who judge their behavior, sociability, capacity to get along, etc. This constant need to prove that one is as good as or better than one's fellow competitor creates constant anxiety and stress, the very causes of unhappiness and illness. Am I suggesting that we should return to the pre-industrial mode of production or to nineteenth-century "free enterprise" capitalism? Certainly not. Problems are never solved by returning to a stage which one has already outgrown. I suggest transforming our social system from a bureaucratically managed industrialism in which maximal production and consumption are ends in themselves into a humanist industrialism in which man and full development of his potentialities—those of love and of reason—are the aims of all social arrangements. Production and consumption should serve only as means to this end, and should be prevented from ruling man.
1. By "a well-oiled cog in the machinery" the author intends to render the idea that man is ______.
A.a necessary part of the society though each individual's function is negligible
B.working in complete harmony with the rest of the society
C.an unimportant part in comparison with the rest of the society, though functioning smoothly
D.a humble component of the society, especially when working smoothly
A B C D
C
2. The real cause of the anxiety of the workers and employees is that ______.
A.they are likely to lose their jobs
B.they have no genuine satisfaction or interest in life
C.they are faced with the fundamental realities of human existence
D.they are deprived of their individuality and independence
A B C D
D
When they apply for their first job, they are tested for intelligence as well as for the right mixture of submissive and independence,可以推断出,为了使顺从性和独立性更好地融合,他们会放弃一些独立性。
3. From the passage we can infer that real happiness of life belongs to those ______.
A.who are at the bottom of the society
B.who are higher up in their social status
C.who prove better than their fellow-competitors
D.who could keep far away from this competitive world
A B C D
D
[解析] 文章第三段最后一句话:“This constant need to prove that one is as good as or better than one's fellow-competitor creates constant anxiety and stress, the very causes of unhappiness sand illness.”
4. To solve the present social problems the author suggests that we should ______.
Section B Directions:In this section, you are required to read one quoted blog and the comments on it. The blog and comments are followed by questions or un finished statements, each with four suggested answers A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET. Psychologists warn that plastic surgery can lead to an identity crisis, among other psychological issues. If you were a fan of the MTV reality series The Hills, you'll remember the complete physical transformation of Heidi Montag. In mere months, she went from a petite (矮小), natural beauty from Colorado to resembling some sort of blonde Barbie as a result of multiple facial and body reconstructive surgeries that she didn't even attempt to hide from the public. What's worse is that she was in her early 20s at the time. We all figured that deep psychological issues were at the root of Montag's shocking procedure list, and now, according to a number of U. S. psychologists, we can safely assume that she may also be suffering from an identity crisis. Psychologist Paul Lorene tells the Daily Mail that most patients undergo cosmetic surgery for the wrong reasons, wanting to look similar to a particular model or actor. "They have this glorified picture of this perfect identity," he says, and this can lead to deep psychological problems when the patients discover the identity they were after isn't actually perfect. Often people don't realize the attachments they have to their facial features until they alter them with surgery. Perhaps you always hated your large nose, but whether you liked it or not, it was a part of you for your life thus far. If you have surgery to make it smaller, it is reasonable to believe that your self identity could suffer if you end up feeling disconnected from your own face that is now unfamiliar. Do you think cosmetic surgeries can cause identity crisis? Comment 1: The image that people see in the mirror and take for granted actually runs deeper. After appearance-altering surgery, some patients come to realize "that imperfection is actually part of their identity". Comment 2: The identity crisis exists long before the surgery takes place. If you don't get plastic surgery you will still have an identity crisis. I have identity crisis every morning when I look in the mirror. When did 1 get older? And where the hell is my hair? Comment 3: To quote American Judge Judy, "Beauty fades, dumb is forever." Comment 4: When you look in the mirror and don't recognize yourself, then you have an identity crisis. Really, these studies and articles of this sort are stating the obvious.
1. The main idea of the quoted blog is that ______.
A.some people undergo facial surgery for wrong reasons
B.the patients will eventually find facial surgeries unsatisfying
C.plastic surgery can cause a loss of self identity
D.people's facial features are important for their self identity

Security or Privacy
In recent years, security cameras are installed in public places for the purpose of preventing and combating crimes. This phenomenon has sparked many debates. Most people welcome it and believe these cameras play a positive role in maintaining people's security, while still some others think installing cameras threaten people's privacy rights. Those supporters maintain that installing cameras in public places, especially some key sites, can provide law enforcement agencies with criminal evidence. Moreover, they say that installation of cameras is a good deterrent to those with intentions of crimes. However, those protesting this practice claim that the government shouldn't sacrifice millions of citizens' privacy rights only for monitoring probably nonexistent crimes. As to me, I prefer the former opinion. In my opinion, As far as public security situation is concerned, the installation of security cameras is quite necessary to maintaining citizens' security. On the other hand, people needn't feel uncomfortable for being monitored by a camera in public places since everything we do outside can be seen by some other people. To conclude, the advantages of installing cameras in public places much outweigh its disadvantages.
