Passage One Questions 11 to 13 are based on the following passage:
[解析] 11-13 In America, where labor costs are so high, "do-it-yourself" is a way of life. Many people repair own cars, build their own garages, even rebuild their own houses. Soon many of them will also be writing their own books. In Hollywood there is a company that publishes children's books with the help of computers. Although other book companies also publish that way, this company is not like the others. It allows the reader to become the leading character in the stories with the help of computers. Here is how they do it. Let us suppose the child is named Jenny. She lives in New York, and has a dog named Hody. The computer uses this information to make up a story with pictures. The story is then printed up. A child who receives such a book might say, "this book is about me," so the company calls itself the "Me-Books Publishing Company." Children like the me-books because they like to see in print their own names and the names of their friends and their pets. But more important, in this way readers are much more interested in reading the stories. Me-books are helping a child to learn how to read. 11. Why do Americans do most things by themselves?

Passage One Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking of going on the stage is "Don't!". But it is useless to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, though the chances of his becoming famous are slim. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a repertory company, usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre: painting scenery, looking after the furniture, taking care of the costumes, and even acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed. The hours are long and the salary is tiny. But young actors with the stage in their blood are happy, waiting for the chances of working with a better company, or perhaps in films or television. Of course, some people have unusual chances which lead to fame and success without this long and dull training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his big car. He told the driver to stop, and he got out to speak to the girl. He asked her if she would like to go lo the film studio to do a test, and at first she thought he was joking. Then she go! angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to tell Connie that he was serious. Then an appointment was made for her to go to the studio the next day. The test was successful. They gave her some necessary lessons and within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. Passage Two The traditional two-parents family is fast giving way in the America of the 1980s to households in which one adult must juggle the often enormous demands of making a living and raising children. For many, single parenthood is synonymous with economic need. More than 3 million single-parent families live in poverty, according to the Census Bureau, and joblessness, plus cuts in public assistance, has helped drive up the number of poor children in such families by about 20 percent in just three years. The biggest burden falls on households that are headed by single mothers. Nearly half of these families are below the poverty as "the most compelling social fact" of the last 10 years. This deprivation is not only hard on its victims but ex pensive for taxpayers since single women and their offspring receive 40 to 80 percent of the benefits in various welfare programs that cost the government a total of 40 billion dollars a year. Despite cuts in benefits averaging 10 percent, rising number of eligible women are likely to keep the overall cost up, according to economist Alice Rivlin, former director of the Congressional Budget office. Fanning the single-parent spiral are two dramatic off shoots of the sexual revolution: divorce and unwed (未婚的) motherhood. The divorce rate has doubled in the last 15 years, and the number of illegitimate births has more than doubled to 700,000 annually. One tenth of white children and more than one half of black children are now born out of wedlock. What's more, there is a strong tendency now for women and teenagers who have illegitimate children to keep them rather than put them up for adoption. Typical is Rufina Nera of Los Angeles. When she became pregnant at 15, abortion was never mentioned in her home. Instead, her mother encouraged her to have the child, says Nera, adding: "She even gave a baby shower for me." Now, Nera shares a crowded bedroom with her 2-year -old daughter as well as her sister. She holds no hope of help from the father, although she remarked during the only time he saw the child that she was prettier than his other illegitimate baby. Even so, Nera tries to keep her attention on two goals: moving into her own apartment and getting enough education to become a secretary or a nurse. Her first step along that path is attending Ramona High School, an" opportunity school" where she and 110 other girls study while their babies are cared for in a nursery.
1. What effect does joblessness and cuts in public assistance have on children of single-parent families?
A.Another 3 million of them live in poverty.

Passage Three In managing information resources, the medium may be the key to an effective system. The medium is a vehicle, a tool, or a container for holding information; the information itself is the thing of value. Three popular categories of information media are pa per, films and electronic storage devices. The media choice must not be viewed as a choice among these three, however; it must be viewed as an opportunity to select from a multitude of media possibilities in combinations that build effective systems. In many instances the person responsible for information resource management is not the person who determines the medium in which information will be created. In such a case, the manager of a firm's information re sources faces a challenge in making a significant contribution to the organization's objectives. For effective management of information resources, media conversion may be necessary. Examples include keying or scanning pager documents to convert them to electronic media. Other processes convert electronic media from one format to another. For example, disk files created on one system may not be compatible with another system. Various hardware and software combinations can be used to convert files to formats that equipment will accept. For in formation generated within organizations, this necessity of making systems compatible may be eliminated by cooperative planning. However, very little control can be exercised over the media used to generate information that comes to your organization from the outside. The medium for information may be selected to satisfy a need that exists when information is created and communicated. For example, a person record may be created because of its portability and because no special equipment is necessary for later references to that information; electronic transmission may be selected because it is the fastest means of communicating information. A firm may use electronic mail because a network already exists for on-line computer communication. The additional application may cost less than postage to mail paper memos.

Passage Four The decline of traditional religion in the West has not removed the need for men and women to find a deeper meaning behind existence. Why is the world way it is and how do we, as conscious individuals, fit into the great scheme? There is a growing feeling that science, especially what is known as the new physics, provides answers where religion remains vague and faltering. Many people in search of a meaning to their lives are finding enlightenment in the revolutionary developments at the frontiers science. Much to the bewilderment of professional scientists, quasi-religious culls are being formed around such unlikely topics as quantum physics, space-time relativity, black holes and the big bang. How can physics, with its reputation for cold precision and objective materialism, provide such fertile soil for the mystical? The truth is that the spirit of scientific enquiry has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past 50 years. The twin revolutions of the Theory of Relativity, with its space-warps and timewarps, and the quantum theory, which reveals the shadowy and unsubstantial nature of atoms, have demolished the classical image of a clockwork universe slavishly unfolding along a predetermined pathway. Replacing this sterile mechanism is a world full of shifting indeterminism and subtle interactions which have no counterpart in daily experience. To study the new physics is to embark on a journey of wonderment and paradox, to glimpse the universe in a novel perspective, in which subject and object, mind and matter, force and field, become intertwined. Even the creation of the universe itself has fallen within tire province of scientific enquiry. The new cosmology provides, for the first time, a consistent picture of how all physical structures, including space and time, came to exist out of nothing. We are moving towards an understanding in which matter, force, order and creation are unified into a single descriptive theme. Many of us who work in fundamental physics are deeply impressed by the harmony and order which pervades the physical world. To me the laws of the universe, from quarks to quasars, dovetail (吻合) together so felicitously that the impression there is something behind it all seems over whelming. The laws of physics are so remarkably clever that they can surely only be a manifestation of genius.

For many young people, the late 1960s was a period of revolution against the moral values that had been the strength and pride of the past generations. They did not want to be hard-working and thrifty [象前辈那样] (71). They rejected the idea that [必须先尽义务后享受] (72), and that individuals must make sacrifices when it is necessary for the good of their children or of their community. They condemned patriotism as the cause of wars and rejected all forms of authority—[不论是政府中的,宗教团体中的,学校中的还是家庭中的] (73). All these narrow ideas, they declared, were things of file past and had always been wrong anyway. It was a distressing time for their eiders. Previously happy parents found themselves [被他们的年轻造反派不看在眼里] (74), who accused them of [太为钱操心] (75) and too anxious to impress the neighbors. "Tree success," the young people explained, "is not a matter of money or position. It's a matter of self-fulfillment. And self- fulfillment consists of reaching one's goals and achieving happiness in one's way [不用去理会任何约束、责任或别人的看法] (76). We do have a duty to ourselves that is more important than duty to others, even to our own children." Most parents [感到难以接受子女们的这种态度] (77). They themselves had been brought up to respect traditional values; they had also learned to respect money [因为在他们的青少年时期钱来之不易] (78). They had married in the late 1930s or early 1940s at a time when it was explained again and again that an unhappy childhood produces emotionally disturbed adults. [已婚夫妇的首要责任] (79), therefore, was to think of their children's happiness. On the other hand, [在爸爸妈妈做出牺牲的同时] (80), they expected their children to obey the rules of "nice" behavior, and to grow up into adults that parents can be proud of. These were precisely the ideas that the young rebels of the 1960s rejected.
1.
as their ancestors had been

Should Euthanasia Be Legalized?
Euthanasia has been a highly controversial issue at home and a broad. In some northern European countries it is legalized. Now it has become a hot topic again in our country, because an incurable patient wanted the doctors to implement euthanasia on him hut they had to refuse to do so since it was forbidden by law. Some people think that euthanasia should be legalized and put into practice. In so doing, it will benefit all people involved. First, it can lessen the pain of the dying patient who suffers terribly from the incurable disease. Second, it will also reduce the great financial pressure on the living because a great deal of money has to be spent in prolonging the life of the dying. On the other hand, others believe that euthanasia should not be legalized and performed. It is generally acknowledged that life is the most precious of all and should he put before everything else. Once a person is dead, he or she can never come back to life, and it is irreplaceable. What's more, if euthanasia is legalized, it is possible for wicked people to take advantage of it to kill legitimately. In my opinion, euthanasia should be legally implemented but strict laws must be made and severe measures taken in case it is a bused. And also, if the incurable patient wants to go on living in pain instead of having euthanasia, his or her choice must be respected.
