M: Well, he is falling a little bit behind his classmates. I was just wondering if you could tell me something about his study habits at home. W: He seems to be spending a lot of time with his computer lately. It was a gift from his father. M: I see. So that's the problem. Joseph is a very intelligent kid. All his classmates like him. Is it possible for you to discipline him a little bit? W: It's my fault. Both of us are working now. Most of the time there is no one who looks after my son. M: How about getting a private teacher? That'll force him to study, well, just until all his homework is done, then he could go back to play the computer. W: Where could I find a private teacher for him? M: I could ask one of the assistant teachers to do that. W: That'll be great if you could do that. I really want to spend more time with Joseph but I just need to work right now. M: I understand. [解析] 14-17 M: Have you ever visited a redwood forest? I recently had a chance to go to Muirwoods National Monument north of San Francisco. W: I've never seen a redwood tree, I really can't imagine how big they are. M: The coastal redwoods are the tallest living things. Some are more than three hundred and fifty feet high. But none of the tree at Muirwoods is that high. You have to go further north in California to see the tallest trees. W: You said that Muirwoods is near San Francisco? I guess it must be quite a tourist attraction. M: Yes. It's less than an hour's drive, so it's easy to go to. W: I've heard that many redwood trees are thousands of years old. Are the ones in Muirwoods that old? M: The oldest documented age for a coastal redwood is more than thousand years. The trees at Muirwoods are 400 to 800 years old. W: Why have they survived so long? M: They have remarkable resistance to forest fires. Their tough, thick bark protects the trees during a fire. The coastal redwoods also like a damp, foggy climate. W: Then since Muirwoods is near foggy San Francisco, it must be ideal for the tree's survival. I can't wait to go there and see them.
2. Why do many tourists visit Muirwoods, rather than other redwood forests?

Questions 18 - 21 are based on the following dialogue between Professor Joanna and her student.
[解析] 18-21 M: Excuse me, Professor Joanna. On the paper you handed back yesterday, you said" Please see me". Is there a problem? W: Well. Have a seat for a minute. Please have a look at the paper, this paragraph here. You analyzed the architecture of the National Cathedral, and you included some information that's not what you'd call common knowledge. How did you know this? M: Well. I looked a lot of things up in the art library before writing the paper. W: John. When you quote something in a paper from a book or others' paper, you must cite the source. It's not just a matter of style. It's a legal requirement. You can do this with a footnote. M: What should I do about this paper.'? W: I suggest you do two things. First, go over to the bookstore and get yourself a writing manual. It doesn't cost very much and the money is well spent. Then once you are familiar with some of the mechanics, I'd like you to rewrite this paper with proper references. In any case, you will need to resubmit it before the end of the term. You're quite welcome, John. And make sure you get it straight now or it will cause you all kinds of trouble later. Copying someone else's work could turn into a legal problem. M: I think I understand now. Thank you very much, Professor.
2. What was the problem of John's paper?
A.He wrote it on the wrong subject.
B.His analysis included only common knowledge.
C.He neglected to cite sources.
D.He turned the paper in late.
A B C D
C
3. What does Professor Joanna want John to put into Second draft?

D.A list of his expenses at the bookstore.
A B C D
A
4. What does Professor Joanna tell John about the problem?
A.It will probably appear at a later time.
B.It's acceptable to ignore it.
C.It will be very difficult to solve it.
D.It's extremely serious.
A B C D
D
Questions 22 -25 are based on the following dialogue.
A.Teacher-centered teaching method in American universities.
B.Student-centered teaching method in American universities.
C.The life and study of American college students.
D.Chinese students in American universities.
A B C D
B
[解析] 22-25 M: In American universities, students are generally expected to be responsible for their own learning, but that doesn't mean a professor will not help students. Most professors would announce their office hours at the first class meeting. They will be available in office hours to give assistance. Students may also make an appointment to see your teacher even if you don't have a particular problem. In that way it will be easier if you need special help later on. W: Have you met any Chinese students in American universities? What do you think of them as compared with American students? M: Yes, I had quite a few Chinese classmates while in the United States. They were known and admired for their hard-working, intelligence and dedication, and I was deeply impressed by their excellent course work. W: There is another thing that puzzles me. In my opinion, the student-centered way of teaching can raise students' interest. It helps a learner become independent and less passive in their classroom, while the traditional Chinese way of teaching sometimes harms their creativity and interest. On the other hand, Chinese students often achieve very good grades through hard work. Many Chinese students are top students in American universities. Part of this has to do with the fact that the Chinese students studying in America are generally members with academic talents in China; they are the best and the brightest ones from a nation of 1.3 billion people. Another reason is that these Chinese students are motivated to study hard to live up to the expectations of their families.
2. How can students receive the teachers' help in American universities?
A.To meet the teachers in their office hours or make appointments with them.
B.To meet the teachers in the classroom.
C.To go to their homes.
D.To go to their office any time during the weekday.
A B C D
A
3. What is the Americans' impression of Chinese students in American universities?
A.They are just as the same as other American students.
B.They can adapt themselves to the student-centered way of teaching.
C.They lack independent thinking and creativity.
D.They are excellent students.
A B C D
D
4. Why can many Chinese students achieve good grades in American universities?
A.Because they like the new way of teaching.
B.Because their American teachers help them.
C.Because they are bright and hard-working.
D.Because they make use of the good conditions in American schools.
A B C D
C
Section Ⅱ Use of English Directions: Read the following text. Choose the best word or phrase for each numbered blank and mark A, B, C or D on ANSWER SHEET 1.
Text Geography is the study of the relationship of between people and the land. Geographers compare and contrast 1 places on the earth. But they also 2 beyond the individual places and consider the earth as a 3 . As it is known the word geography 4 from two Greek words," ge", the Greek word for" earth" and" graphein", 5 means" to write". The English word geography means" to describe the earth". 6 geography books focus on a small area 7 a town or city. Others deal with a state, a region, a nation, or an 8 continent. Many geography books deal with the whole earth. Another 9 to divide the study of 10 is to distinguish between physical geography and cultural geography. The former focuses on the natural world; the 11 starts with human beings and 12 how human beings and their environment act 13 each other. But when geography is considered as a single subject, 14 branch can neglect the other. A geographyer might be described 15 one who observes, records, and explains the 16 between places. If places were 17 , there would be little need for geographers. We know, however, 18 no two places are exactly the same. Geography, 19 is a point of view, a special way of 20 at places.
15.
A.for
B.to
C.by
D.as
A B C D
D
be described可以与介词as和by搭配使用。be described as“被描述成…”,其意义与上下文吻合;be described by意为“被…描述;被…描写”,与上下文的意义不符;介词to和for一般不与动词describe搭配使用,故排除。
16.
A.exceptions
B.differences
C.sameness
D.divisions
A B C D
B
Geographers compare and contrast various places on the earth. [A] exceptions“例外”;[D] divisions“部门,分隔”。
从上文We know与下文no two places are exactly the same可知此处需要一个连接词来引导know的宾语从句,that常用来引导宾语从句,所以选[D] that;[A] although和[C] since一般只能引导状语从句;虽然[B] whether也可以引导宾语从句,但它意为“是否”,与文意不符。
19.
A.then
B.nevertheless
C.still
D.moreover
A B C D
A
Part A Directions: Read the following three texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.
Text 1 The entertainment profession, or" show business", attracts many young people. Unfortunately, only very few can hope to become famous and successful. Talent is not enough, because show business is as competitive as any other business. Without a good manager, the performer can never hope to succeed. Fashion is important in this business too. The best tailor in the world will never be a success if he makes old fashioned clothes. In exactly the same way, a performer must change his "act" in order to follow the taste of the moment. This is true for actors, dancers and comedians, but perhaps most of all for singers. "Pop" stands for "popular", and a pop singer has to work very hard to 'become popular. He must either give the public what they already want or he must find a new way of singing that will attract their attention. Even when he has succeeded ,his records are sold everywhere, he cannot relax. Then he must work harder than ever to stay popular, because there are always younger singers trying to become famous and to steal some of the popularity. The life of a successful pop singer is not all easy. He can only relax when he is alone, because every thing he does is watched and reported in the special newspaper written for the "fans". The fans are the most important people in the world for the singer. They buy his records, they go to his concerts, and they make him rich and famous. But they can be very annoying, too. Sometimes their enthusiasm goes out of control that they do anything to get something from you for memory. They steal handkerchiefs, they tear off buttons, and they even cut off piece of the unfortunate singer's hair. Many singers have been stripped practically naked by their fans. A pop singer has to spend a lot of money on clothes, because he must always look smart, or, at any rate, different. He must have a luxurious car. And most important -- he must always keep smiling for the benefit of his public.
1. In order to become a successful performer in show business, one must have ______.
2. The example of "the tailor" is cited here to explain that ______.
A.clothes that the tailor made is vital for performers' success
B.performers have to change their performances to be popular
C.performers should do the same thing as a tailor does
D.performers can never succeed without the tailor
A B C D
B
performance是act的同义转述,be popular是follow the taste of the moment的同义转述,因此选[B] 。
3. A pop singer must work hard when he has become famous to ______.
A.attract the public
B.remain popular
C.sell more records
D.earn more money
A B C D
B
根据题干work hard when he has become famous可定位到第二段第一句和最后一句话,re main popular是原文stay popular同义转述,因此选[B] 。find a new way of singing that will attract their attention指歌手找到一种新的唱法来吸引听众的注意力,并非说歌手勤奋就能吸引听众,卖更多的唱片,或是挣更多钱,故排除[A] 、[C] 、[D] 。
4. It can be inferred that the fans' over-enthusiastic behaviors sometimes ______.
A.express their dislike for the singers
B.make the singers more popular
C.show their likes and respect to the singers
D.make practical jokes on the singers
A B C D
C
5. From the last paragraph we know that a pop singer ______.
A.can relax only after he is successful
B.must pay much attention to his clothes
C.can enjoy his life at will
D.is often annoyed by his fans
A B C D
B
Text 2 Opportunities for rewarding work become fewer for both men and women as they grow older. After age 40 ,job hunting becomes even more difficult. Many workers stay at jobs they are too old for rather than face possible rejection. Our youth-oriented, throw-away culture sees little value in older people. In writer Lilian Hellman's words, they have" the wisdom that comes with age that we can't make use of. " Unemployment and economic need for work are higher among older women, especially minorities, than among younger white women. A national council reports these findings. Older women hold a job longer with less absenteeism, perform as well or better, are more reliable, and are more willing to learn than men or younger women. Yet many older women earn poor pay and face a future of poverty in their retirement years. When" sexism meets ageism, poverty is no longer on the doorstep --- it moves in," according to Tish Sommers, director of a special study on older women for the National Organization for Women. Yet a 1981 report on the White House Conference on Aging shows that as a group, older Americans are the"wealthiest, best fed, best housed, healthiest, most self-reliant older population in our history. "This statement is a small comfort to those living below the poverty line, but it does explode some of the old traditional beliefs and fears. Opportunities for moving in and up in a large company may shrink but many older people begin successful small businesses, volunteer in satisfying activities, and stay active for many years. They have few role models because in previous generations the life span was much shorter and expectations of life were fewer. They are ploughing new ground. Employers are beginning to recognize that the mature person can bring a great deal of stability and responsibility to a position. One doesn't lose ability and experience on the eve of one's 65th or 70th birthday any more than one grows up instantly at age 21.
1. After age 40, people find it hard to get rewarding jobs because ______.
A.their abilities and physical strength start to become weak
B.the inherent characteristics of our value system makes it so
C.they don't want to be rejected
D.they have no courage to venture
A B C D
B
2. According to Hellman, we know that ______.
A.the wisdom of older people has been fully used
B.the wisdom of older people is not valued by American society
C.older people's wisdom is an invaluable resource to American society
D.older people are as intelligent as young people
A B C D
C
In writer Lilian Hellman's words, they have "the wisdom that comes with age that we can't make use of.”意思是老年人智慧随着年龄的增长而增长,而这种智慧我们却不能够加以利用。也就是说老年人的智慧是值得肯定的,他们的聪明才智确实是社会的宝贵财富,因此选[C] 。虽然美国社会不重视老年人的智慧,但无法从Hellman的话直接推断出来,因此排除[B] 。
3. Tish Sommers believes that ______.
A.older women have no chance to avoid poverty
B.sexism mainly results in the poverty of the older women
C.American society will solve the problems caused by sexism and ageism
D.older women can keep poverty out of the doorstep by performing better
A B C D
A
由题干Tish Sommers定位到第二段最后一句话sexism meets ageism,poverty is on longer on the doorstep—it moves in,(当性别歧视和对老年人的歧视并存时,贫困不是停留在门外的台阶处,而是进了家门)。 因此选[A] 。
4. According to the third paragraph, the author tells us that older Americans ______.
A.have more job opportunities than young people
B.have new chances to remain active in society
C.live below the poverty line
D.no longer believe in the promise of a happy life upon retirement
Text 3 A weather map is an important tool for geographers. A succession of three or four maps presents a continuous picture of weather changes. Weather forecasters are able to determine the speed of air masses and fronts; to determine whether an individual pressure area is deepening or becoming shallow and whether a front is increasing or decreasing in intensity~ They are also able to determine whether an air mass is retaining its original characteristics or taking on those of the surface over which it is moving. Thus, a most significant function of the map is to reveal a synoptic picture of conditions in the atmosphere at a given time. All students of geography should be able to interpret a weather map accurately. Weather maps contain an enormous amount of information about weather conditions existing at the time of observation over a large geographical area. They reveal in a few minutes what otherwise would take hours to describe. The United States Weather Bureau issues information about approaching storms, floods, fronts and all climatic conditions in general. Twice a month it issues a 30-day "outlook" which is a rough guide to weather conditions likely to occur over broad areas of the United States. These 30-day outlooks are based upon an analysis of the upper air levels which often set the stage for the development of air masses, fronts, and storms. Considerable effort is being exerted today to achieve more accurate weather predictions. With the use of electronic instruments and earth satellites, enormous gains have taken place recently in identifying and tracking storms over regions which have but few meteorological stations. Extensive experiments are also in progress for weather modification studies. But the limitations of weather modification have prevented meteorological results except in the seeding of super-cooled, upslope mountainous winds which have produced additional orographic precipitation on the windward side of mountain ranges. Nevertheless they have provided a clearer understanding of the fundamentals of weather elements.
1. The 30-day forecast is determined by examining ______.
A.daily weather maps
B.upper air levels
C.satellite reports
D.changing fronts
A B C D
B
These 30-day outlooks are based upon an analysis of the upper air levels which often set the stage for the development of air masses, fronts, and storms.(这些以三十天为周期的气象图是在对上层空气水平的分析基础上编制的),所以选[B] 。
2. The observation of weather conditions by satellites is advantageous because it ______.
A.enables man to alter the weather
B.makes weather prediction easier
C.gives the scientific information not obtained readily otherwise
D.uses electronic instruments
A B C D
C
With the use…meteorological stations.(借助电子仪器和人造卫星,在那些只有极少数气象站的地区人们在辨别和追踪的风暴等天气状况方面最近有巨大的进展),也就是说有了电子仪器和人造卫星,没有气象站也照样能获得气象信息,因此选[C] 。
3. The word" gains" in the second sentence in the last paragraph means ______.
4. At the present time, experiments are being conducted in ______.
A.30-day" outlooks"
B.predicting storms
C.controlling weather
D.determining density of pressure groups
A B C D
C
题干experiments are being conducted与原文experiments are in progress同义,由此可判断出本题考查的是对文章第三段第三句话的理解,第三句话Extensive experiments are also in progress for weather modification studies.(人们正在进行大量的实验以研究如何改善和控制天气状况)中 weather modification和controlling weather同义,指按照人的意志和需要来改变天气状况,因此选 [C] 。
5. Artificial rainmaking has been most successful in the ______.
A.lake area
B.western slope of mountains
C.prairie lands
D.windward side of mountains
A B C D
D
…the seeding of super-cooled,upslope mountainous winds which have produced additional orographic precipitation on the windward side of mountain ranges.(在山脉的迎风面,通过将颗粒,如碘化银晶体,撒在云里使气流冷却,沿山坡上升,将会产生大量的人工降雨),因此选 [D] 。

1. Below is a table showing the sources of income of college students. Look at the table and write an essay of about 120 words making reference to the following points: 1. the sources of income of both the Australian and Chinese students 2. the possible reasons for the differences Sources of Income of College Students
[范文] According to an investigation into the sources of income of college students, nearly half of the Australian students' income comes from their parents and thirty two percent from part-time jobs. Scholar ships from colleges and universities make up the remainder. Chinese students, on the other hand, get ninety percent of their income from their parents. In my opinion there are two main reasons for this phenomenon. In Australia, students when they are still children are taught to be independent while Chinese parents care so much for their children that it is almost impossible to live on their own. Of course, we have also to consider our own situations. Chinese students have fewer opportunities to find part-time jobs. Adding to this, both teachers and students' parents encourage them to spend their time on books rather than go to the society to do a part time job to earn money.
