Passage 1 Culture shock is an occupational disease (职业病) for people who have been suddenly transplanted abroad. Culture shock is caused by the anxiety that results from losing all familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse. Those signs are as following: when to shake hands and what to say when meet people, when and how to give tips, how to make purchases, when to accept and refuse invitations, when to take statements seriously and when not. These signs, which may be words, gestures, facial expressions, or customs, are acquired by all of us in the course of growing up and as much a part of our culture as the language we speak or the beliefs we accept. All of us depend on hundreds of these signs for our peace of mind and day-to-day efficiency, but we do not carry most at the level of conscious awareness. Now when an individual enters a strange culture, all or most of these familiar signs are removed. No matter how broadminded or full of good will you may be a series of supports have been knocked from under you, followed by a feeling of frustration. When suffering from culture shock people first reject the environment which caused discomfort. The ways of the host country are bad because they make us feel bad. When foreigners in a strange land get together in complain about the host country its people, you can be sure that they are suffering from culture shock.

Passage 2 Cheating: The income tax deadline (最后期限) approaches and some taxpayer's thoughts turn to it. Test time approaches and some students' thoughts turn to it. "You want something you can't get by behaving within the rules, and you want it badly enough, you'll do it regardless of any guilt or deep regret and you're willing to run the risk of being caught." That's how Ladd Wheeler, psychology professor at the University of Rochester in New York, defines cheating. Many experts believe cheating is on the rise. "We're suffering a moral breakdown." Pinkard says, "we're seeing more of the kind of person who regards the world as a series of things to be dealt with. Whether to cheat depends on whether it's the person's interest." He does, however, see less cheating among the youngest students. Richard Dienabier, Psychology (心理学) professor at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, believes that society's attitudes account for much of the increase in cheating. "Twenty years ago, if a person cheated in college, society said: That is extremely serious, you will be dropped for a term if not kicked out permanently," he says, "nowadays, at the University of Nebraska, for example, it is the stated policy of the college of Arts and Sciences that if a student cheats on an exam, the student must receive an 'F' on what he cheated on. That's nothing. If you're going to flunk anyway, why not cheat?" "Cheating is most likely in situations where the vital interests are high and the chances of getting caught are low." says social psychologist, Lynn Kahle of the University of Oregon in Eugene.

4. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Cheating is widespread because society is too tolerant.
B.Cheating is the result of intense pressure.
C.Cheating is cheating, whether on a test or on any other occasions.
D.Cheating comes together with civilization.
A B C D
A

5. The word "flunk" in paragraph 5 could best be replaced by which of the following?
Passage 3 Sometimes you'll hear people say that you can't love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you'll hear people say that you can't expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you've got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we're the people of our parents' eyes, and that our grandmas think we are great talents and our uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics, but sometimes it's a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you built a positive self-image and learn to love yourself. Self-image is your own mind's picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world. The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do everyday. Don't allow doubts to occur in it. It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can't move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you are silly because you aren't good at math, find a tutor. If you think you are weak because you can't run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you are dull because you don't wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat your self on the back, you'll know you're well on your way.
1. You need to build a positive self-image when you ______ .
A.dare to challenge yourself
B.feel it hard to change yourself
C.are unconfident about yourself
D.have a high opinion of yourself

2. According to the passage, our self-images ______.
A.have positive effects
B.are probably untrue
C.are often changeable
D.have different functions
A B C D

3. How should you change your self-image according to the passage?
A.Keep a different image of others.
B.Make your life successful.
C.Understand your own world.
D.Change the way you think.
A B C D
D
[考点] 事实细节题 由文章第二段的最后一句“Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world. (改变自我评价和你的内心世界的关键是改变你的思维方式。)”可知,D项为正确答案。
Passage 4 Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand—he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him. What visual artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist. Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and repose (安息); their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects. If one painter chooses to paint a gangrenous (坏疽) leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something—all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.
1. It is hard to explain what a painter is saying, because ______.
A.most painters do not express themselves well
B.a painter uses unusual words and phrases

2. A painter chooses certain shapes and colors out of the countless billions possible because he believes they ______.
A.are beautiful
B.can bring delight to the public
C.are worth showing to the public
D.are particular
A B C D
C
[考点] 事实细节题 由文章第二段第二句中“...is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us.”可知,画家选中一些他们认为有趣并值得展示的图形和色彩展示给公众,故本题应选C。
3. An artist's choice of shapes and colors indicates that he believes them to be ______.
A.meaningful in themselves
B.merely beautiful
C.a reflection of his experiences
D.worth looking at
A B C D
D
[考点] 事实细节题 从文章第三段第一句“...their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights.”中可知,画家选择的图形和色彩包含迷人的景象,并值得观看,故D为正确答案。

Take Job or Continue Graduate Education
Some students want to work after they finish their undergraduate study. They think they have learned enough for their future professions and it's time to get on in society to have their ambitions achieved. On the one hand, they may apply what they have learned at school to the jobs they will take; on the other hand, they may earn money to support themselves. Others would like to continue to receive graduate education. In their opinion, it is very necessary to further their education in that they hike to be better professionals in the future. Some of them plan to devote themselves to scholarship. With the development of society, more and more high level personnel are in urgent need. If I choose, I will continue my graduate education first. I want to be well-trained and then become a qualified person in life.
