Passage 1 Summers with father were always enjoyable. Swimming, hiking, boating, fishing—the days were not long enough to contain all of our activities. There never seemed to be enough time to go to church, which disturbed some friends and relations. Accused of neglecting this part of our education, my father instituted a summer school for my brother and me. However, his summer course included ancient history, which Papa felt our schools neglected, and navigation, in which we first had a formal examination in the dining room, part of which consisted of tying several knots in a given time limit. Then we were each separately sent on what was grandly referred to as a cruise (巡航,巡游) in my father's 18-foot knockabout, spending the night on board, and loaded down, according to my mother, with enough food for a week. I remember that on my cruise I was required to formally plot our course, using the tide table, even though our goal was an island I could see quite clearly across the water in the distance.

A.The father wanted the children to learn more about religion.
B.The children got poor grades in their regular school.
C.The regular school teachers neglected the children.

Passage 2 Young Koreans are beginning to do it alone when it comes to finding a partner, though matchmaking is still the most common way for boys to meet girls. Professional matchmakers can make thousands of American dollars by introducing suitable marriage partners to each other, but partners also play a role in the process during which young Koreans meet. In Confucian Korea, where marriage is regarded as more of a business contract than a sacred thing, the scene of the first meeting is repeated hundreds of times a day in coffee shops in the main hotels around Seoul. The business of continuing the family lineage (血统) and keeping the bloodlines pure is often too important to be left to romance and chance encounters. Often, the girl will work out a system of secret signals with her mother, from which her parents can tell if she is interested. For example, if the girl orders a coffee it might mean that she wants her parents to leave her alone with the boy, while a milk shows that she wants them to stay. Sometimes the matchmaking is not always so formal, with the introduction being made by friends. But whether through friends or families, there is hardly a Korean man or woman in the country who has not gone through this process—sometimes six or seven times.

Passage 3 A question often put to the specialist on fishes is "How long do fishes live?" This puts the specialist in an embarrassing position because he is often unable to give a direct answer to this simple question. But actually this question is not as simple as it seems. There are thousands of different kinds of fishes, and they vary a great deal in size and life span. Moreover, it is not easy to find out just how long a fish lives in its natural state. We can find out how old a fish is by studying its scales, but we cannot say how much more time it would live if we had not caught it. We may rear fishes and record their life span but we cannot be sure that this is the length of time they would have lived, had they been left alone. We may make marking to show how fast the fishes grow so that we can calculate the age of the largest on record, but unless this large fish dies of old age we are still not in a position to know its natural life span. Unlike human beings, fishes do not stop growing when they reach maturity (成熟). They continue to grow as long as they live, although the rate of growth slows down in mature fishes.
1. People often ask the specialist on fishes regarding its ______.
A.size
B.life span
C.age
D.variety

A.he does not know the answer
B.there is no answer to the question
C.it is a silly and simple question for him
D.there is no definite answer to this question
A B C D
D
[考点] 推理判断题 由文中第一段第二句的“...because he is often unable to give a direct answer to this simple question.”和第二段中的“There are thousands of different kinds of fishes, and they vary a great deal in size and life span.”可推知,这个问题没有确切的答案,因此D为正确答案。
3. We can know a fish's age from its ______.
A.weight
B.size
C.scales
D.length
A B C D
C
[考点] 事实细节题 由文中第三段第一句“We can find out how old a fish is by studying its scales...”可得知,C为正确答案。
4. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.Different kinds of fishes have different life spans.
B.It is hard for the specialist to know the length of time a fish lives in its natural state.
C.Mature fishes grow more quickly than young ones.
D.The specialist makes marking to know the rate of growth of fishes so that they know the age of the largest ones.
A B C D
C
[考点] 事实细节题 由文中最后一段最后一句“They continue to grow as long as they live, although the rate of growth slows down in mature fishes.”可得知,成熟的鱼生长速度会放慢,因此C是正确答案。
5. Human beings, unlike fishes, ______.
A.stop growing when they reach maturity
B.grow faster after maturing
C.continue to grow as long as they live
D.have a short life span
A B C D
A
[考点] 推理判断题 由文中最后一段第一句“Unlike human beings, fishes do not stop growing when they reach maturity.”可知,与人类不同,鱼成熟后不会停止生长,因此可推知人类到达成熟期后会停止生长,故A为正确答案。
Passage 4 What is exactly a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you, you say, "I wish I could help you, but I'm short of money myself." In fact, you are not short of money, but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don't want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie? A scientific study of lying shows women are better liars (说谎者) than men, particularly when telling a "white lie", such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks terrible. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researches show that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way. Research has also been done into the way people's behavior changes in a number of small, unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the same time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying, "I wish I were somewhere else now."
1. This passage tells us that telling lies is ______.
A.often necessary in order to avoid being defeated
B.quite bad because people ought to be honest
C.sometimes necessary in order not to hurt others' feelings
D.usually bad if you are talking with a good friend

My View on Mobile Phone
In recent ten years, mobile phone plays an important part in our daily life. As you know, we can keep in touch by cell phone. When something important happens, the mobile phone is very convenient for us to call someone. In addition, we can send messages by mobile phone with little money, and we can also play games or listen to music. On the one hand, it's inconvenient when we go out without mobile phone. It seems as if we will lost the connection with the outer world without the mobile phone. On the other hand, if we don't take cell phone with us, maybe we could have other entertainments, such as reading books, physical exercises, watching TV, etc. How amazing! In my opinion, we must control our time on mobile phone and use it wisely. We don't have to use the cell phone all the time, it's bad for our eyes. You know, it's just a tool for us. So, we couldn't be slaves of the mobile phone.
