Passage 3 When you speak on the telephone, you cannot use your facial (面部的) expression, eye contact and gestures to help communicate your message. Your voice must do the job. A good voice is pleasant to listen to because it communicates a positive message. Keep in mind the following qualities of a good voice: Speak in a voice neither too loud nor too soft. Speak louder when giving important information. Speak slowly enough so that the listener has a chance to understand your message without your having to repeat it. Keep in mind that as you speak the other person may be taking notes. Pronunciation is the correct way to say a word. To avoid mispronouncing words, you may wish to check the pronunciation of unfamiliar words in the dictionary before you use them. People with an accent unlike yours may not understand your pronunciation of some words. You also may not understand the pronunciation of some of their words. Passage 4 Blind people can "see" things by using other parts of their bodies. This fact may help us to understand our feelings about color. If blind people can sense color differences, then perhaps we, too, are affected by color unconsciously. Manufacturers have discovered by experience that sugar sells badly in green rappings, that blue foods are considered unpleasant, and that cosmetics (化妆品) should never be packaged in brown. These discoveries have grown into a branch of color psychology. Color psychology now finds application in everything from fashion to decoration. Some of our preferences are clearly psychological. Dark blue is the color of the night sky and therefore associated with calm, while yellow is a day color with associations of energy and incentive (刺激). For a primitive man, activity during the day meant hunting and attacking, while he soon saw red as the color of blood and anger and the heat that came with effort. And green is associated with passive defense and self-protection. Experiments have shown that colors, partly because of their psychological associations, also have a direct psychological effect. People exposed to bright red show an increase in breath, in heartbeat and in blood pressure; red is exciting. Similar exposure to pure blue has exactly the opposite effect; it is a calming color. Because of its exciting meaning, red is chosen as the signal for danger, but closer analysis shows that a vivid yellow can produce a more basic state of alarm. So fire engines and ambulances in some advanced communities are now rushing around in bright yellow colors that stop the traffic dead.

Part Ⅳ Translation Directions:You are required to read the following passage and translate the underlined sentences into Chinese. Remember to write your translation in the corresponding space on the Answer Sheet. When I was studying English at a training center in Washington D. C. in 1998, I shared a house with two young Americans, Jim and Steve. Jim was studying French and Steve Chinese, both at the Foreign Service Institute. 1 We shared many things in common, but we also thought and acted quite differently. Steve was interested in speaking Chinese. 2 He always tried every opportunity to talk with me with his very English-like pronunciation. I was often touched by his diligence. However, I wanted to practice English with him, too. So we often spoke at the same time in the other's mother tongue. Jim was fresh from college and the youngest of the three. He was going out all the time. The only time we met was at breakfast. There was a small round table in our kitchen, where we sat around to enjoy our food. 3 Steve had Chinese fast food such as dumplings or noodles, and I ate bread and boiled eggs. But Jim often just drank a cup of tea because he had nothing in his fridge. 4 He was too busy dating pretty French girls to do any shopping. I often offered him some of my food. 5 But Steve told me in his poor Chinese that I didn't need to do that. He said that it was Jim's own fault and that it served him right. 6 Although he was learning Chinese, he still held his American sense of values.
