Passage 2 Tides are created mainly by the pull of the moon on the earth. The moon's pull causes water in the oceans to be a little deeper at a point closest to the moon and also at a point farthest from the moon on the opposite side of the earth. These two tidal "waves" follow the apparent movement of the moon around the earth and strike nearly every coast line at intervals of about twelve hours and twenty-five minutes. After reaching a high point, the water level goes down gradually for a little more than six hours and then begins to rise toward a new high point. Hence, most coast lines have two tides a day and the tides occur fifty minutes later each day. Differences in the coast line and in channels in the ocean bottom may change the time that the tidal wave reaches different points along the same coast line. The difference in water level between high and low tide varies from day to day according to the relative positions of the sun and the moon. The sun also exerts a pull on the earth, although it is only about half as strong as the pull of the moon. When the sun and the moon are pulling along the same line, the tides rise higher, and when they pull at right angles to one another, the tide is lower. The formation of the coast line and variations in the weather are additional factors which can affect the height of tides. Some sections of the coast are shaped in such a way as to cause much higher tides than are experienced in other areas. A strong wind blowing toward the shore may also cause tides to the higher.
1. Which of the following is right according to the passage?
A.Some coast lines do not have two tides each day.

Passage 3 Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general loathing of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and hear the politicians before an election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen.

Passage 4 The biggest safety threat facing airlines today may not be a terrorist with a gun, but the man with the portable computer in business class. In the past 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference. The source of this interference remains unconfirmed, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic devices such as portable computers, radio and cassette players and mobile telephones. RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation industry, has recommended that all airlines ban such devices from being used during "critical" stages of flight, particularly take-off and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights. Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prohibit passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are reluctant to enforce a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flights. The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft's computers. Experts know that portable devices emit radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication. But, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not. The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio system in order to damage navigation equipment. As worrying, though, is the passenger who can't hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music's too loud.
1. The passage is mainly about ______.
A.a new regulation for all airlines
B.the defects of electronic devices
C.a possible cause of aircraft crashes
D.effective safety measures for air flight
A B C D
C
2. What is said about the over 100 aircraft incidents in the past 15 years?

B.They may have taken place during take-off and landing.
C.They were proved to have been caused by the passengers' portable computers.
D.They were suspected to have resulted from electromagnetic interference.
A B C D
D
3. Few airlines want to impose a total ban on their passengers using electronic devices because ______.
A.they don't believe there is such a danger as radio interference
B.the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be proved
C.most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassette players
D.they have other effective safety measures to fall back on
A B C D
B
4. Why is it difficult to predict the possible effects of electromagnetic fields on an airplane's computers?
A.Because it is extremely dangerous to conduct such research on an airplane.
B.Because it remains a mystery what wavelengths are liable to be interfered with.
C.Because research scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in labs.
D.Because experts lack adequate equipment to do such research.
A B C D

5. It can be inferred from the passage that the author ______.
A.is in favor of prohibiting passengers' use of electronic devices completely
B.has overestimated the danger of electromagnetic interference
C.hasn't formed his own opinion on this problem
D.regards it as unreasonable to exercise a total ban during flight

Section B Directions:The following is a short passage about a memo. After reading the passage, you are required to complete each of the five statements within three words. The answers should be written after the corresponding numbers on the Answer Sheet. The business memo (备忘录) is probably the most frequently used communication within a company. A memo creates a written record that may or may not be filed, depending on the receiver and the subject. As you know, spoken messages may be misunderstood or forgotten. A memo, however, becomes a record that does much to ensure the complete communication between the sender and the receiver. The standard form of a memo frequently carries a pre-printed series of items: To, From, Date, and Subject. The first two items include the names of the receiver and the sender. A well-written subject line tells the reader the key topic or topics the memo is about.

Part Ⅳ Translation Directions:You are required to read the following passage and translate the underlined sentences into Chinese. Remember to write your translation in the corresponding space on the Answer Sheet. 1 Dogs are social animals and without proper training, they will behave like wild animals. They, will soil your house, destroy your belongings, bark excessively, fight other dogs and even bite you. 2 Nearly all behavior problems are perfectly normal dog activities that occur at the wrong time or place or are directed at the wrong thing. The key to preventing or treating behavior problems is learning to teach the dog to redirect its normal behavior to outlets that are acceptable in the domestic setting. 3 One of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself is to obedience train it. Obedience training doesn't solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem. 4 Training opens up a line of communication between you and your dog. 5 Effective communication is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want it to do. 6 Training is also an easy way to establish the social rank order.
