Passage 1 The concept of personal choice in relation to health behaviors is an important one. An estimated 90 percent of all illnesses may be preventable if individuals would make sound personal health choices based upon current medical knowledge. We all enjoy our freedom of choice and do not like to see it restricted when it is within the legal and moral boundaries of society. The structure of American society allows us to make almost all our own personal decisions that may concern our health. If we so desire, we can smoke, drink excessively, refuse to wear seat belts, eat whatever foods we want, and live a completely sedentary life-style without any exercise. The freedom to make such personal decisions is a fundamental aspect of our society, although the wisdom of these decisions can be questioned. Personal choices relative to health often cause a difficulty. As one example, a teenager may know the facts relative to smoking cigarettes and health but may be pressured by friends into believing it is the socially accepted thing to do. A multitude of factors, both inherited and environmental, influence the development of health-related behaviors, and it is beyond the scope of this text to discuss all these factors as they may affect any given individual. However, the decision to adopt a particular health-related behavior is usually one of personal choices. There are healthy choices and there are unhealthy choices. In discussing the morals of personal choice, Fries and Crapo drew a comparison. They suggest that to knowingly give oneself over to a behavior that has a statistical probability of shortening life is similar to attempting suicide. Thus, for those individuals who are interested in preserving both the quality and quantity of life, personal health choices should reflect those behaviors that are associated with a statistical probability of increased vitality(活力) and longevity(寿命).
1. The concept of personal choice concerning health is important because ______.
A.wrong decisions could lead to poor health

Passage 2 When should a child start learning to read and write? This is one of the questions I am most frequently asked. There is no hard and fast rule, for no two are alike, and it would be wrong to set a time when all should start being taught the complexities of reading letters to form words. If a three-year-old child wants to read (or even a two-year-old child for that matter), the child has the right to be given every encouragement. The fact that he or she might later be "bored" when joining a class of non-readers at child school is the teacher's affair. It is up to the teacher to see that such a child is given more advanced reading material. Similarly, the child who still cannot read by the time he goes to junior school at the age of seven should be given every help by teachers and parents alike. They should make certain that he is not dyslexic (having difficulty in reading). Although parents should be careful not to force youngsters aged two to five to learn to read (if badly done it could put them off reading for life), there is no harm in preparing them for simple recognition of letters by labeling various items in their rooms. For instance, tie a nice piece of cardboard to their bed with BED written in neat, big letters. Should the young child ask his parents to teach him to read, and if the parents are capable of doing so, such an attraction should not be ignored. But the task should never be made to look like a hard job and the child should never be forced to continue, or his interest should start to flag.
1. This passage is mainly about ______.
A.what qualities people teaching children reading should have
B.different age groupings of children to be taught reading
C.when and how children should be taught reading
D.various problems of children who start learning to read
4. The purpose of labeling items in the room is to ______.
A.make it more colorful
B.teach children to write neatly
C.help children recognize simple letters
D.force children to develop the habit of reading
A B C D

A.children should ask their parents to teach them to read
B.children should not feel bored if given advanced reading material
C.children starting to read should ask specialists for help
D.children should be taught with patience, care and a sense of humor
Passage 3 A major incentive (动力) for college attendance is the belief that it will prepare you for a career. Chances are that the career you want, whether in nursing, counseling, law, or management, requires a college education. Even if the return of your education isn't as great as it used to be, you would probably rather be a relatively poorly paid lawyer than a secretary or a construction worker; you would probably rather be a manager than a subordinate. In the sense that a degree is increasingly required for even middle-level jobs, your investment in a college education will still pay off. It can pay off in other ways too. It is a value judgement to say that a college education will make you a better person, but it is a value judgement that the vast majority of college graduates are willing to make survey after survey to demonstrate that people feel very positive about their college education, believing that it has made them better and more tolerant people. Whether it makes you a better person or not, a college education is likely to have a lasting effect on your knowledge and values. If you finish college, you will sit through 30 to 45 different courses. Even the least dedicated student is bound to learn something from these courses. In addition, students learn informally. Whether you go to college in your hometown or across the country, college will introduce you to a greater diversity of people than you're likely to have experienced before. This diversity will challenge your mind and broaden your horizons. As a result of formal and informal learning, college graduates are more knowledgeable about the world around them, more tolerant and less prejudiced, more active in public and community affairs, and, more open to new ideas.
1. It is apparent from the passage that people go to college mainly because they believe ______.
A.a college education will provide them with a guarantee of success in life
B.the economy of their country can't absorb an army of untrained youngsters
C.a college education will make them better qualified for a career
D.the investment in a college education can bring a higher economic return than before
5. This passage is primarily concerned with ______.
A.the change of people's attitude toward their college education
B.the benefits of a college education
C.the result of formal and informal learning
D.the intercommunication among college students
A B C D

Passage 4 Pronouncing a language is a skill. Every normal person is an expert in the skill of pronouncing his own language, but few people are even moderately proficient at pronouncing foreign languages. Now there are many reasons for this. Some are obvious, some perhaps not so obvious. But I suggest that the fundamental reason why people in general do not speak foreign languages much better than they do in their own languages is that they fail to grasp the true nature of the problem of learning to pronounce them, and consequently never set about speaking them in the right way. Far too many people fail to realize that pronouncing a foreign language is a skill that needs careful training of a special kind, and one that cannot be acquired by just leaving it to take care of itself. I think even teachers of language, while recognizing the importance of a good accent, tend to neglect, in their practical teaching, the branch of study concerned with speaking the language. So the first point I want to make is that English pronunciation must be taught, the teacher should be prepared to devote some of the lessons to this, and his whole attitude to the subject should make the students feel that here is a matter worthy of receiving their close attention.

Part Ⅳ Translation Directions:You are required to read the following passage and translate the underlined sentences into Chinese. Remember to write your translation in the corresponding space on the Answer Sheet. Readers also use many other skills besides anticipating. 1 Rapid reading for example, is an important skill. It is especially important for students to learn to read quickly and with understanding. 2 There is another part of the skill of fast reading. It is choosing the right speed. 3 A person might want to read a newspaper fast. He or she is reading only for general information and can slow down anytime. However, the introduction to a textbook will need more attention and more careful reading. 4 Being able to change the reading speed is therefore, necessary. 5 Skimming, scanning(扫视), and surveying(检视) are all kinds of rapid reading. They have different purposes. Skimming and scanning are reading very fast while looking for a piece of information. For example, you might read for a particular name or a date in history lesson. Surveying, also fast reading, is reading to understand the structure of an article, how it is "built". 6 By surveying, readers know the order or sequence of parts.
