PART FOUR ·Read the newspaper article below about a partnership between industry and schools. ·Are sentences 16-22 below the article "Right" or "Wrong"? If there is not enough information to answer "Right" or "Wrong", choose "Doesn't say". ·For each sentence 16-22, mark one letter (A,B or C) on your Answer Sheet.
Industry and Schools in Partnership
The new Manufacturing Partners program aims to improve teachers' understanding of manufacturing by inviting 2000 teachers to take part in factory visits. It will not be just one-way traffic, however about 500 manufacturing employees are also invited to visit schools each year to improve their awareness of modern schools. Peter Davis, Program Director, believes employees will also see the benefits. "It's an excellent means of improving professional development by helping to improve management and communication skills." Davis says. Until now, manufacturing firms have been slow to send staff into schools and teachers haven't been very keen to visit factories, either. According to Davis, most would rather visit a bank or retail company instead. Head teacher Andrew Morris recently spent three days at KTM, an engineering firm. Afterwards he admitted his view of industry had been out-of-date: "I thought it would be a dirty place to work, but conditions have obviously improved a lot nowadays." KTM Director John Dimmock said that without a doubt his staff had benefited from explaining their jobs to teachers and pupils.
1. One aim of the program is to increase manufacturing employees' knowledge of schools.
A.Right
B.Wrong
C.Doesn't say
A B C
A
有关该内容在文章第一段就已作了阐明,即“about 500 manufacturing employees are also invited to visit schools each year to improve their awareness of modern schools.”第1题的意思与句中“to improve their awareness of modern schools(增加他们对现代学校的了解)”相吻合,所以正确答案为A。
2. Manufacturing employees think the program will not benefit them.
A.Right
B.Wrong
C.Doesn't say
A B C
C
文中提到了“employees will also see the benefits”,但这是活动主办者的看法,而且在这项活动之前工厂对派工人去参观学校并不积极,即第三段中的“Until now, manufacturing firms have been slow to send staff into schools”。但是至于工人们的真实想法,文章并未提及,所以正确答案应为C。
3. Peter Davis believes that sending employees into schools will help develop their professional abilities.
A.Right
B.Wrong
C.Doesn't say
A B C
A
这个说法是关于活动主办人彼得·戴维斯的观点的,所以考生只需仔细阅读第二、三两段即可。第二段中“It's an excellent means of improving professional development.”直接引语表达的就是与第3题相同的意思,所以正确答案应为A。
4. Manufacturing companies already sent many employees into schools.
A.Right
B.Wrong
C.Doesn't say
A B C
B
而文章中与此相关的一句是“Until now, manufacturing firms have been slow to send staff into schools”,即:在这之前制造业工厂对派工人去参观学校并不积极。由此可见本题这一说法与原文意思相反,因此正确答案是B。
5. Davis thinks that many teachers do not want to visit factories.
A.Right
B.Wrong
C.Doesn't say
A B C
A
这一说法与文中的“teachers haven't been very keen to visit factories”(教师并不喜欢参观工厂)相符合,并且后面一句“most would rather visit a bank or retail company instead”更是进一步明确了教师们不太愿意参观工厂的态度,所以正确答案为A。
6. Andrew Morris used to be an engineer.
A.Right
B.Wrong
C.Doesn't say
A B C
C
文章中对此人的介绍仅限于“Head teacher...recently spent three days at KTM, an engineering firm”,即:最近花了三天时间参观KTM的一位校长。至于他以前是否做过工程师,文章并未提及,所以正确答案为C。
7. The Director of KTM wasn't sure about the benefits of this project.
A.Right
B.Wrong
C.Doesn't say
A B C
B
很明显,这与文章中的“KTM Director John Dimmock said that without a doubt his staff had benefited from explaining their jobs to teachers and pupils”是背道而驰的,尤其是句中的“without a doubt”更是与题中的“wasn't sure about”截然相反。所以正确答案应为B。
PART FIVE ·Read the Chairman's Statement below and answer questions 23-28. ·For questions 23-28, choose the correct answer. ·For each question, mark the correct letter A,B or C.
Chairman's Statement
Despite the appearance of a new competitor on the market the company continued to grow and increase its market share throughout 2000. Partly in response to this new threat but, more importantly, as part of a strategy for growth, several key decisions were taken this year. The most significant new developments included a range of vitamin rich children's drinks and low calorie diet drinks, which both proved very popular. The company is still best known for its range of refreshing fruit drinks and, not surprisingly, these were our biggest sellers once more. There were two new additions to the range last year, Squish and Liquid Sunshine, both of which have a distinctive Caribbean flavour. The first sales figures suggest that our expensive TV advertising campaign was very successful and that these products will soon be as popular as the rest of the fruit drink range. Growth in the keep-fit and health markets meant our energy drinks did well in 2000. Sales of one brand, Booster were second only to fruit drinks in April. The strength of this particular market also explains the success of our new diet drinks. There were, however, big differences in the performance of our older products. The company's oldest product, mineral water, continued to enjoy a healthy share of a very profitable mass market. It seems our customers are still happy to stay with the brand despite the increasing number of competitors' products. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of our Ice-T and Chocomania drinks. Sales showed an initial increase in the summer after we re-launched both products but customers soon bought other brands and total annual sales for both product ranges were disappointing. The company also said goodbye to its own brand of cola, launched in 1998. After two unsuccessful years of trying to break into the huge cola market, 2000 looked like being another poor year. The company finally accepted that it had made a wrong decision and stopped production in September of that year.

5. Sales for Ice-T and Chocomania ______.

6. When did the company stop producing its own brand cola?
A.1998.
B.2000.

A B C
