Recently, an article about a high-income white-collar mother unable to afford her child's summer camp tuition has gone viral in China. It is said that the mother earns 30,000 yuan a month, but paid 20,000 yuan for her daughter's summer camp stay abroad. Overseas summer camp programs are becoming increasingly popular in China, as they may provide rare opportunities for children to experience Western lifestyle and culture. It is also believed that the practice gives children a competitive advantage over their peers. Some parents are willing to spend large sums of money on such programs, while others wonder whether it's worthwhile.
Topic: Are Expensive Overseas Summer Camps Worthwhile?

我很高兴应邀与各位交流一下不同文化所形成的交际模式。作为一名在中国教学的美国人，我的报告基于我个人的经历和体会。
来自不同文化背景的人们往往都认为自己的行为方式是“正常的”。但涉及说话方式时，有些在本族人看来很自然的话语却被外族人视为荒诞，甚至会引起误解。
引发困惑的交际模式集中反映在间接话语上。虽然中美两国人都会使用间接话语，但是如何使用间接话语模式取决于诸多因素。
语境对于理解间接话语是至关重要的，例如，说话者在社会上的经济地位及工作职务、说话者的出生地及长居地、说话者的自我定位及他人关系中的定位。

I'm very happy to be invited and talk about communication pattern of different cultures. I will give my presentation based on my personal experience and observations as an American teacher in China.
People in every culture tend to regard the way they do things as "normal". But in regard to ways of speaking, what may seem natural to one person may be odd or misunderstood by someone outside the culture.
Communication patterns that cause confusion often center on indirect speech. Chinese and Americans can both speak indirectly, but their use of this speech pattern depends on many factors.
Context is crucial to understanding the indirect speech, such as speakers' economic and work position in society, where they were born and have lived, and how they identify themselves in relation to themselves and others.

The holiday season is both joyful and stressful at once. There is family to get along with, gifts to buy and return, people to visit, plenty of festive food to eat, sales to rush to, and parties to plan and attend.
Returning to the usual routine and quieter workplace can dampen your spirits just by the absence of exciting things to do. It is normal to feel a little low and that feeling will soon pass once the routine re-establishes itself.
After the many indulgences over the holiday period, it can leave you feeling a little out of shape. Having healthy food and keeping up regular exercises will enhance your mood and help you return to good shape.
If you're worried about not keeping warm enough during the colder weather, such excellent choices as healthy, chunky, hot soups or vegetables will both warm and fill you up without carrying lots of calories.

During most of our daily interactions with people, we engage in small talk. Small talk is usually a short conversation about one's family, the weather, or sports news.
For FL learners, this is a type of conversation we need to learn because the contents are easy to organize and we can learn a little about the person we talk to.
A great way to begin a longer conversation in a foreign language is to first ask questions about the person you are talking to. Everybody likes talking about their own experiences, opinions and expectations.
Therefore, asking some questions can allow a longer conversation. Although maintaining a conversation in a foreign language is not easy, you can gain confidence with these techniques available.

About three decades ago, China was known as the "Bicycle Kingdom". But the two-wheeled mode of transport's popularity began to fade, with many bikes soon replaced by their fuel-powered competitors.
But recent months have seen a revival of the humble bike across China, with an increasing number of people choosing cycling instead of driving to schools, to workplaces or to do sightseeing.
The introduction of bike-sharing schemes, pioneered by start-ups like Mobike and other companies, has brought the trend to a new level. Data currently show Mobike has 5.85 million active users.
People can unlock the shared bikes by simply using their smartphones. The bikes are equipped with GPS and can be left anywhere in public for the next user.
