Like many teenagers, I almost 6 think that people are judging me, but when I act, that feeling disappears. People only look at your 7 ability, not your clothing, money, choice of friends, or any of the other ways people are usually 8 . When I'm on stage, everything else vanishes (消失). Passage 1 It is physically impossible for a well-educated, intellectual, or a brave man to make money the chief object of his thoughts; as physically impossible as it is for him to make his dinner the principal object of them. All healthy people like their dinner, but their dinner is not the main object of their lives. So all healthy-minded people like making money—ought to like it and to enjoy the satisfaction of winning it; but the main object of their lives is not money; it is something better than money. A good soldier, for instance, mainly wishes to do his fighting well. He is glad of his pay—very properly so, and just complains when you keep him ten months without it; still, his main opinion of life is to win battles, not to be paid for winning them. So of doctors. They like fees no doubt—ought to like them; yet if they are brave and well educated, the entire object of their lives is not fees. They would rather cure their patient and lose their fees than kill him and get it. And so with all other brave and rightly trained men; their work is first, their fees second, very important always, but still second.

Passage 2 In its early history, Chicago had floods frequently, especially in the spring, making the streets so muddy that people, horses, and carts got stuck. An old joke that was popular at the time went something like this: A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street. Asked if he needs help, he replies, "No, thanks. I've got a good horse under me." The city planner decided to build an underground drainage (排水) system, but there simply wasn't enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two options were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city. An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city's streets by as much as 12 feet. This of course created a new problem: dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago. Building owners were faced with a choice: either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and the second stories into main floors, or hoist the entire buildings to meet the new street level. Small wood-frame buildings could be lifted fairly easily. But what about large, heavy structures like the Tremont Hotel, which was a six-story brick building? That's where George Pullman came in. He had developed some house-moving skills successfully. To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel, Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews (螺旋千斤顶) beneath the building's foundation. One man was assigned to operate each section of roughly 10 jackscrews. At Pullman's signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly. Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stayed open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn't even notice anything was happening. Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago's early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago's waste water was draining efficiently into the Chicago River, the city's next step was to clean the polluted river.
2. The city planners were convinced by Ellis Chesbrough to ______.
A.get rid of the street dirt
B.lower the Chicago River
C.fight against heavy floods
D.build the pipes above ground
A B C D
D
[解析] 事实细节题。根据文章第三段第一句“An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground...”可知,Ellis Chesbrough说服了城市规划者在地上铺设排水管道。故选D。
3. The underlined word "hoist" in Paragraph 4 means "______".
4. What can we conclude about the moving operation of the Tremont Hotel?
A.It went on smoothly as intended.
B.It interrupted the business of the hotel.
C.It involved Pullman turning ten jackscrews.
D.It separated the building from its foundation.
A B C D
A
[解析] 事实细节题。根据文章第五段最后一句“Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stayed open during the entire operation...”可知,旅馆在移动的过程中仍在正常营业,故B项可排除;根据文章第五段第三句“...Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews beneath the building's foundation.”可知,在抬高建筑的过程中用了数以千计的螺旋千斤顶,并且建筑主体与地基没有分离,故C、D项可排除。故选A。
5. The passage is mainly about the early Chicago's ______.
Passage 3 Engineering students are supposed to be examples of practicality and rationality, but when it comes to my college education I am an idealist and a fool. In high school, I wanted to be an electrical engineer and, of course, any sensible student with my aims would have chosen a college with a large engineering department, famous reputation and lots of good labs and research equipment. But that's not what I did. I chose to study engineering at a small liberal arts university that doesn't even offer a major in electrical engineering. Obviously, this was not a practical choice; I came here for more noble reasons. I wanted a broad education that would provide me with flexibility and a value system to guide me in my career. I wanted to open my eyes and expand my vision by interacting with people who weren't studying science or engineering. My parents, teachers and other adults praised me for such a sensible choice. They told me I was wise and mature beyond my 18 years, and I believed them. I headed off to college sure I was going to have an advantage over those students who went to big engineering "factories" where they didn't care if you had values or were flexible. I was going to be a complete engineer: technical genius and sensitive humanist all in one. Now I'm not so sure. Somewhere along the way my noble ideals crashed into reality, as all noble ideals eventually do. After three years of struggling to balance math, physics and engineering courses with liberal arts courses, I have learned there are reasons why few engineering students try to reconcile engineering with liberal arts courses in college. The reality that has blocked my path to become the typical successful student is that engineering and the liberal arts simply don't mix as easily as I assumed in high school. Individually they shape a person in very different ways; together they threaten to confuse. The struggle to reconcile the two fields of study is difficult.
1. The author chose to study engineering at a small liberal arts university because he ______.
A.wanted to be an example of practicality and rationality
B.intended to be a combination of engineer and humanist
C.wanted to coordinate engineering with liberal arts courses in college
D.intended to be a sensible student with noble ideals
Passage 4 Falls are the number one cause of death to old people at home. Most old people can live safely at home if they make a few changes. Falls are common as people are getting older. Up to half of home accidents could be prevented by making some very simple changes. Here are a few suggestions: Mark trouble spots with bright tapes. The first and last steps on stairs are usually high-risk accident areas. Applying bright tapes and using bright light in these areas would make these spots easier to see. Put grab bars(扶手) in the bathroom. A large number of falls occur in the bathroom. This is unfortunate(不幸的) because it's easy to make the area safe from accidents. Putting grab bars in the bathroom gives people something to hang on to. Invest in a personal alarm. A personal alarm can be started if a person falls or otherwise gets in trouble. With the push of a button, the alarm automatically sends a signal, which gets someone to call and see if the person needs help.
1. By making some very simple changes at home, old people ______.
A.are free from home accidents
B.can improve their health
C.are likely to live longer
D.can live more safely

Part Ⅳ Translation Directions:You are required to read the following passage and translate the underlined sentences into Chinese. Remember to write your translation in the corresponding space on the Answer Sheet. 1 Newspapers are not nearly as popular today as they were in the past. There are not very many people who seriously read a newspaper every day. Most people read only the sports pages, the advice or gossip columns, the comics, and perhaps the classified advertisements. 2 Most people don't take the time to read the real news. Newspaper editors say that their readers are lazy. They say they have to trick people into reading the news. 3 They attempt to catch the reader's interest with pictures and exciting headlines. These techniques are used on the front page because it is the first thing you see when you pick up the paper. 4 The first page attracts attention and encourages the reader to look through the rest of the paper. This is why editors always look for a good first page story and headlines that make you stop and look. 5 If the headline is horrible enough or frightening enough or wild enough, perhaps you will go on to read the rest of the story. 6 Just the same, there are a lot of people who do not even read the front page anymore. They may read the headlines, but that is all. Then they turn to the sports page, or comics, or advertisements.
1.
报纸已不像过去那样受欢迎了,也没有多少人会每天认真地读报纸了。
2.
大多数人不愿花时间去看真正的新闻。
