Passage 1 When we are not engaged in thinking about some definite problem, we usually spend about 95 percent of our time thinking about ourselves. Now, if we stop thinking about ourselves for a while and begin to think of other persons' good points, things will be quite different. One of the most neglected virtues is appreciation. Somehow, we neglect to praise our son or daughter when he or she brings home a good report card, and we fail to encourage our children when they first succeed in baking a cake or building a birdhouse. Nothing pleases children more than this kind of parental interest and approval. The next time you enjoy delicious food at a restaurant, send word to the cook that it was excellently prepared, and when a tired salesperson shows you unusual politeness, please mention it. Every minister, lecturer and public speaker knows the discouragement of pouring himself or herself out to an audience and not receiving any appreciative comment. What applies to professionals applies doubly to workers in offices, shops and factories and our families and friends. In our interpersonal relations we should never forget that all our associates are human beings and hunger for appreciation. It is the legal tender that all souls enjoy. Try to be friendly and appreciate in your daily life, and you will be surprised how that will change your life and the world.

B.people seldom appreciate things other people do
C.say "thanks" to someone, and you'll soon become friends

Passage 2 In writing Smart Thinking, I myself learnt as much as I would hope for its readers and so, in the end, it was an easy decision to produce a new edition. This second edition reflects my experiences of teaching with Smart Thinking over the years since it was first published. In revising it, I have found that much of the first edition remains valuable, and that students have learnt much from it. But I have also made some significant changes. Greater assistance has been provided in the earlier chapters of this edition to help readers with more complicated skills, and later chapters on reasoning and on research have been expanded. The final chapter is now a fully worked example of the skills offering a model of the power of the approach I am outlining. I would hope that readers will now find the journey towards greater ability in critical thinking and reasoning a little bit easier, and with a clearer goal ahead.

Passage 3 That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me. As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets. About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk. Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found. Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck pall up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, "Alisa Camacho?" I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eye. "Is this what you're looking for?" he asked, holding up a small square shape. It was nearly 3 A.M. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn't be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.
1. How did the writer feel when she was walking home after work?
Passage 4 Borrowing to start a business is not easy. Getting a bank loan, particularly for a new small business, is like going through the eye of a needle. Banks favor established business people with a solid credit rating and a large bank account. They should also have experience in the business they propose to enter, and offer well-prepared business plans that show the ability to repay the loans. If you are not such a person, then you need to double your preparations to convince the banker to lend you that much needed start-up capital. If your business is new and small, bankers will need to know as much as possible about you and your business. However, many small business owners often make the mistake of not being well prepared when going to the bank to apply for the loan. Surprisingly, many loan applicants don't even have the slightest idea how or when they intend to repay the money they request. Often they don't even know how much money they need. When asked how much money they want to borrow, many people give these two common responses: "How much money can I get?" and "As much as possible." Is it any wonder that lenders say no? So the most important thing is do your homework before you ask for a loan.
1. By saying "Getting a bank loan... is like going through the eye of a needle", the writer emphasizes ______.
