Worry can keep you awake, tossing and 1 in bed until the early hours of the morning when you eventually 2 asleep. When you wake up, you don' t feel 3 , but tired and worn out and 4 to face a new day. Dr. Henry Winkle, in a recent newspaper article 5 Stress and Sleep, 6 that stress and lack of sleep are directly 7 . Dr. Winkle says, "the more we worry, the 8 we sleep, the more we are unable to deal with 9 " "If we can find a way to get a good night' s sleep," he 10 "we can often find the 11 to deal with what' s worrying us." Seven hours is about the average amount, 13 strangely enough, sleeping longer often gives you a headache 14 of making you feel more refreshed. A bedtime drink can also help, but coffee or tea should be avoided as they contain caffeine (咖啡因) and will keep you 18 "When you put the light 19 ," Dr. Winkle says, "concentrate on relaxing your muscles. Part A Directions: Read the following three texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. Text 1 To understand why someone becomes an optimist or a pessimist, it helps to understand what distinguishes them. Say you crash your car. Do you expect good things to happen after the accident — an easy recuperation(挽回损失), a fat check from your insurer? Or do you worry that your neck will hurt forever? "Optimistic people tend to feel that bad things won't last long and won't affect other parts of life," Seligman says. Pessimists tend to believe one negative incident will last and undermine everything else in their lives. Also important, researchers say, is the story you construct about why things happen -- your explanatory style. Optimists believe that bad events have temporary causes — "The boss is in a bad mood." Pessimists believe the cause is permanent — "The boss is a jerk." This sense of control distinguishes one type from the other. Positive thinkers feel powerful. Negative thinkers, Seligman says, feel helpless because they have learned to believe they' re doomed, no matter what. A young wife who's told she's incapable of handling household finances might later become a divorce woman who can't balance a checkbook. Such learned helplessness causes much harm on health. Studies show that optimists are better at coping with the distress associated with everything from sore throat to heart surgery. Furthermore, scientists at U. C. L. A. discovered that optimists have more disease fighting T cells. Pessimists also don't believe in preventive care. Visit a doctor and you might find out you're sick! My father was rushed to the emergency room for medical conditions that would have been easily treatable if he'd seen a doctor sooner.

Text 3 My family and I recently returned from a trip to Alaska, a place that combines supernatural beauty with a breathtaking amount of bear risks. I' ll start with some facts at a glance: WHERE ALASKA IS:Way the hell far from you. Beyond Mars. HOW YOU GET THERE:You sit in a variety of airplanes for most of your adult life. WHAT THEY HAVE THERE THAT WILL TRY TO KILL YOU:Bears. I am quite serious about this. Although Alaska is now an official United States with modem conveniences such as rental cars and frozen yogurt, it also contains a large number of admitted bears, striding freely about the landscape, and nobody seems to be the least bit alarmed about this. In fact, the Alaskans seem to be pround of it. You walk into a hotel or department store, and the first thing you see is a glass case containing a stuffed bear the size of a real one. Our hotel had two of these. It was what we travel writers call "a two-bear hotel". Both bears were standing on their hind legs and striking a pose that said:"Welcome to Alaska! I'm going to tear your arms off!" This struck me as an odd concept, greeting visitors with a showcase containing a major local hazard. It' s as if an anti-drug organization went around setting up glass display cases containing stuffed drug smugglers, with little plaques stating how much they weighed and where they were taken. Anyway, we decided the best way to deal with our fear of bears was to become well informed about them, so we bought a book, Alaska Bear Tales. Here are some of the chapter titles, which I am not making up. "They'll Attack Without Warning" "They'll Really Attack You" "They Will Kill" "Come Quick ! I' m Being Eaten by a Bear !" "They Can Be Funny" Ha ha ! I bet they can. I bet Mr. and Mrs. Bear and a bundle of hilarity as they fight playfully over the remaining portion of a former tourist plumped up by airline food. But just the same, I' m glad that the only actual, nonstuffed, practicing bears that we saw were in the zoo.
Part B Directions: Rend the texts from a magazine article in which five people gave their opinions on work and family. For Questions 61 to 65 ,match the name of the persons to one of the statements given below. Liu : To me, work is first and my child is second. I work more for myself than for my child be- cause it's the only way to be economically independent. Otherwise, I may some day lose everything, even my child. I can give for the sake of my daughter but never at the cost of my career. Only after I achieve value through work can it be possible for me to raise my baby. I resumed working after a short maternity leave. Now my daughter goes to a kindergarten while I am at work; I think that is her first step into society. Long gone are the days when work is mechanically divided according to sex. Now people, men and women, take their work in line with their abilities. Moreover, I think men should take an equal share in housework and child care. Liang: Nowadays, economic independence is particularly important to women. The only way to realize self-value is through work. I believe women should first live as a social entity, then as a mother. And there are facts to show that women are not inferior to men in the working world. As for me, when I have a child, it is just another part of my life. It would be impossible to make her my whole life. I will give my child ideological instructions and material comforts. I think I will also get a nanny to lend me a hand. Yao: It' s unnecessary for women to work side by side with men. When women make their career their final pursuit, I think they lose their natural maternal instincts. They become as aggressive as men. I don' t like this type of women. If I get married, I hope my wife will put most of her energy and time on child care and family. Because she gives birth to the child, she can do a much better job than the father in understanding the child. The mother should be the main educator while father works as her assistant. Wang: Modem women are shirking their responsibility as mothers by reducing the time they should spend caring for their children to expand their presence in the workplace. Women are naturally fit for human reproduction while men are meant for material production. It' s absolutely wrong for women to throw themselves into material production, which they are not so good at. Married women must assume the role of full-time mothers if their financial situation permits it; and a woman' s value is only realized after she has successfully raised her child. Even when women do work, their purpose in working should not be to develop their own careers. They should regard the working experience as a chance to broaden their vision so that they can be better mothers. Zhao: Although we may say women' s talents lie in being mothers, we should admit that women do not sacrifice their families for work and they are not expected to give up a chance for a career. The problem is how to make sure that burden is not only on the mother. Both parents need to balance the responsibilities of family and work. After all women are equal members of society and have value in all social fields. There is no basic difference between the quality of work performed by men and women. Now match each of the items(61 to 65 )to the appropriate statement. Note : There are two extra statements. Statements A. My child is the focus of my life. B. Family and work are both important for women. C. Men should be asked to return to their paternal duties. D. I would give up the whole world for my work. E. Women need work to prove their own value. F. Women are born to be mothers. G. Ambitious women are not women.

Part B
1. Look at the pictures below and write an essay titled Where Do You Choose to Live of about 120 words making reference to the following two points: 1. a description of these two pictures 2. your comment on the comparision between the two different pictures
范文 From this picture we can see two sharp contrasts of people's living conditions. In the left picture, people are living a comfortable life with green trees, beautiful flowers around the house. There are birds singing in the forest and animals resting in peace. But in the right picture, we can see only des ert. I think either of the pictures could be the future of the human beings. And that depends on what we choose to do and what not to do now. If we want a life in the left picture, we should protect our environment. We shouldn't destroy the ecological balance of nature by cutting trees, killing animals, and polluting the environment. We do this not only for ourselves but also for our future generations.
