Turkish people are so warm and generous. M: How do you like the food in Turkey,Christi? W: Oh,the food was fantastic ! But you know what I couldn't get used to? How much people expected me to eat, I gained so much weight while I was living there! M: Yes,it' s so polite to be generous. We think people aren' t polite if they don' t offer a lot of food. W: I know. I also learned that it' s not polite for the guest to accept the offer of food at first. M: Yes,that' s definitely tree! If you' re the guest, you must refuse the first two offers of food. W: The first time I had dinner at a Turkish home,I felt rode refusing food. So I ate everything. And I kept on eating.., and eating. Every time the host offered me something, I ate it. M: Do you know how to stop the host from offering you food? You must leave some food on your plate. That way the host knows that yon' re full. W: Oh,is that the trick? In the United States, we usually eat everything. You don' t want the host to think that you don' t like the food. M: That is a difference. You know what happened to me the first time I had dinner at an American home? When my hostess offered me a second helping of food, I said" no" the first time, to be polite. But she didn't offer again! I was still hungry when I left the house! W: Americans think it' s not polite to insist. We don' t want to force you to eat more if you don' t want more. So if you say" no" the first time, we believe what you say and we don' t offer again. M: I learned that lesson the hard way. Now if someone asks me if I want something, I say "yes" the frost time -- even though I feel rude. W: Would you like something to eat? M: No, no, I am not hungry. W: Ha,ha.

They said they' d been waiting for more than an hour. M: Terrific. Does anyone know what's causing the delay? W: If so, no one has let us know. It could be that there aren' t enough people selling tickets this afternoon. Or maybe their computer is down. I' m sure the concert hasn' t been cancelled. M: I just hope they don' t run ont of tickets before I get up there. W: That really would be annoying, wouldn' t it? M: I guess I should have come before lunch. Or has it been like this all day? Part A Directions: Read the following three texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. Text 1 Your' re off work and hanging out at home. Off your diet and into cookies, big dinners and champagne. Off your schedule, and up nights with movies, videos or a good book. Off your workout routine and skipping your morning swim or evening run. In short, you' re off, free of responsibilities and pressure, stuffed full of food and fun. And you don't like it. "All humans, and for that matter all species that are vertebrates and many that are not, have internal clock mechanism, "said George Brainard, professor of neurology at Thomas Jefferson Univer- sity in Philadelphia." That' s not a metaphor. It' s an actual biological entity." As many people find themselves in the second week of enforced indolence because of the winter break -- whether because of school holidays or time off from work -- more than a few may be experiencing a peculiar sensation. A wave of discontent at the luxury of doing nothing,of sitting around with time to spare, the commodity of the late 20th century that we' re constantly told is in dangerously short supply. The sense is that you should feel great, but actually you don' t. You hate to admit it,but it might even be a welcome break to go back to work or school. "I enjoy being off,but I enjoy coming back too,"said Virgina Woodard of Chicago. After several days off around Christmas, she was back at her baby-sitting job on New Year's Eve,taking her 3-year-old charge to a museum. "It messes up your schedule, and coming back is tiresome," said Woodard, who nonetheless said she enjoyed her time off. "I feel like I' ll need a week to recover to get back on my schedule, "said Joni Lederer. She and her family shared the holidays at their Highland Park home with another family, and she has spent the days since taking her two sons skating ,bowling and to museums. "Most people," said Brainard,"do better and are healthier if they keep a regular social calender to their life that is somewhat consistent with their internal timekeeping mechanism." The changes in routine that commonly occur during the holidays come at a biological cost. Those changes disrupt the body clock, located primarily in the brain, and may produce an out-of-sorts feeling. "Normal day-to-day routines and realities are very supportive of the internal clock structure that leads to good health," he added.
1. When a person is off work and hanging out at home, he doesn't like it, why?
A.He has nothing to do during the holidays and so he feels useless.
B.His routine timetable is changed so he doesn't feel comfortable.
C.He doesn't have any responsibilities and pressures, so he feels uneasy.
D.If he feels happy during the holidays, work will be more unbearable when the holi- days are over.
Text 2 When a 13-year-old Virginia girl started sneezing, her parents thought it was merely a cold. But when the sneezes continued for hours, they called in a doctor. Nearly two months later the girl was still sneezing, thousands of times a day, and her case had attracted world-wide attention. Hundreds of suggestions, ranging from" put a clothes pin on her nose"to "have her stand on her head" poured in. But nothing did any good. Finally, she was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital where Dr. Leo Kanner, one of the world' s top authorities on sneezing, solved the baffling problem with great speed. He used neither drugs nor surgery for, curiously enough, the clue for the treatment was found in an ancient superstition about the amazing bodily reaction we call the sneeze. It was all in her mind, he said, a view which Aristotle, some 3 000 years earlier, would have agreed with heartily. Dr. Kanner simply gave a modern psychological interpretation to the ancient belief that too much sneezing was an indication that the spirit was troubled;and he began to treat the girl accordingly. "Less than two days in a hospital room, a plan for better scholastic and vocational adjustment, and reassurance about her unreasonable fear of tuberculosis quickly changed her from a sneezer to an ex-sneezer, "he reported. Sneezing has always been a subject of wonder, awe and puzzlement. Dr. Kanner has collected thousands of superstitions concerning it. The most universal one is the custom of begging for the blessing of God when a person sneezes -- a practice Dr. Kanner traces back to the ancient belief that a sneeze was an indication that the sneezer was possessed of an evil spirit. Strangely, people the world over still continue the custom with the traditional," God bless you" or its equivalent. When scientists look at the sneeze, they see a remarkable mechanism which, without any con- scious help from you, takes on a job that has to be done. When you need to sneeze you sneeze, this being nature' s clever way of getting rid of an annoying object from the nose. The object may be just some dust in the nose which nature is striving to remove.
6. The girl sneezed continuously because she_______.
Text 3 Some time ago, I discovered that one of the chairs in my front hall had a broken leg. I didn' t foresee any great difficulty in getting it mended, as there are a whole lot of antique shops on Pimlico Road which is three minutes' walk from my flat, so I set forth one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop confidently expecting a friendly reception, with a kindly man saying, "What a charming chair! Yes,that' s quite a simple job. When would you want it back?" I was quite wrong. I wasn' t too concerned;after all,it was only the first try and there are many more shops on both sides of the road. The reaction at the second shop, though slightly politer, was just the same, and at the third and the fourth -- so I decided that my approach must be wrong. I entered the fifth shop with some confidence because I had thought of a plan. The rather fierce shop owner looked it over carefully and said," Yes, not a bad little chair, how much do you want for it?" "£ 20,"I said. "It's got a slightly broken leg,"I said. "Yes,I saw that. It' s nothing;don't worry about it." "What will you do with it?"I asked. "Oh, it will be very saleable once the repair is done, I like the bit of old green velvet on the top, I shall leave that, yes, very saleable. "" I' Il buy it, "I said. "Yes, I know, but I' ve changed my mind; as a matter of fact, it is just what I' m looking for. I' ve got a pair to it at home; I'll give you £ 27 for it. " " You must be crazy, "he said; then suddenly the penny dropped and he smiled and said,"I know what you want, you want me to mend your chair." "And what would you have done if I had walked in and asked you to repair it for me?" " I wouldn' t have done it, "he said. "We don' t do repairs, not enough money in it and too much of a nuisance, but I' ll mend this for you."
11. The author was not worried about the broken leg of the chair at first because_______.
A.his flat was very near the antique shops
B.he knew it was easy to mend it
C.there were so many antique shops selling chairs
D.he thought it was easy for him to find someone to repair it
Part B Directions: Read the following article in which five people talk about the future. For Question 61 to 65, match the name of each speaker to one of the statements ( A to G ) given below. Paula: The future will not determine itself. The future is determined by the actions of the present day. The responsibility we have for the future begins when we recognize that we ourselves create the future -- that the future is not something imposed upon us by fate or other forces beyond our control. We ourselves build the future both through what we do and what we do not do. Mrs. John: The future will see more unbelievable things. In the future, People will be able to predict their performance from the strength of the brain' s electrical activity. Doctor Kramer has found that the strength of the brain' s electrical activity can be measured through the scalp. Bosses could measure brain activity through the scalp and tell whether a worker is performing well, working hard, or too tired to do the job properly. Mary: In the new century, things around us will be more fascinating. The chemical gelatin in the brain is said to increase your desire for fat, when is stimulated. This means that disturbances of this chemical gelatin can lead to overeating. Doctor Sarah Leibowits presented an academic paper suggesting that the appetite for fatrich food can be controlled through drugs that block the effects of gelatin. Judy: In the future our life will change dramatically. It is quite certain that computers will play important part in our life. You will visit your doctor, and find that he uses a computer screen andvisual information about your condition, instead of his text books, computers in your home will enable you to answer interactive questions about your health and show the alternative results which will affect you if you act in a certain way. Carrie: In the future, computers will change the way the doctors diagnose and treat their patients. Also doctors will change their traditional notion of medicine. Part B
1. You are given a picture and required to describe the scene you can see in it with the title Inside and Outside. Your composition should be no less than 120 words. Remember to watch care- fully and to write clearly.
范文 Inside and Outside There are two birds in the picture. One is in a cage, another is outside. Both of them are worrying about something. Locked in the cage and confined to a small space, the bird in the cage lives a very unhappy life. Although it is fed on a full bowl of rice every day, it is bored to death. It dreams of freeing itself from imprisonment and flying in the sky. On the other hand, the bird outside the cage is harassed by starvation. Coveting the bowl of rice in the cage, it has a strong desire to get in. In its hunger pangs, it has completely forgotten the advantage of being able to enjoy freedom. The message conveyed by this picture is instructive. Everything has its positive and negative sides. When a person is beset by his unfavorable condition, he should never lose sight of his own advantages.
