[听力原文] 14-16 Like Malaysia, Indonesia is a traditional honor-oriented society. There is strong in-group loyalty including family, friends, and members of the same ethnic group. This is the basis for widespread favoritism in the economy. Indonesians value large families, with extended families living together and supporting one another. However, increasing urbanization and the need to move to find employment is breaking up this interdependence and extended family living. Harmony and respect characterize the relations among people. Conflict is avoided as values and behavior in all aspects of life are directed towards smooth relations with others. People of low ranks do not make decisions; there is a wait-and-see attitude until senior managers reveal what the decision is. The best time of year to schedule business trips to Indonesia is between February and June, and again between September and early December. July and August are vacation months for Indonesians who can afford to travel. Both Malay and Chinese Indonesians respect age, status and position. You should be equally sensitive to those factors at meetings and in social engagements associated with business. Defer to older people by standing when they enter and letting them sit down first. If a meeting involves a very senior Indonesian, it is respectful that your organization has a very senior person available to attend. You should be punctual at all time even though your Indonesian counterparts may not be. Indonesians generally shake hands all round and give a slight bow of the head. You should do the same. They smile a lot, but this does not necessarily have a positive meaning.

[听力原文] 14-17 M: I think that intermarriage is a good idea. After all, we are living in a cosmopolitan country. We have so many different races living together peacefully, don't we? It is nothing new to us, and I feel that intermarriage will work out. W: Personally, I feel that it is not a very sound idea. It is difficult for two people of entirely different religions to live and share life together. They will face so many problems that it would be better if they don't get married in the first place. M: Of course there will be problems. Even two people of the same religion have problems. It is the same in this case, except that it will be slightly more difficult, I guess. W: I agree with you, Henry. Naturally, there will be arguments and personal differences. Marriage thrives on a give-and-take policy, so a couple will have to learn to adapt to each other's customs and traditions. M: That's right. Married people should be more tolerant towards each other and be willing to learn about each other's religion. Only then can understanding and acceptance be achieved ultimately. W: You talk as if it were very simple. It isn't, you know. I should know, as I am a child of a mixed marriage. M: All right, you tell us why is is not such a good idea. W: You see, Henry, it depends on the individuals concerned. If two people of different religions marry, they should be prepared for the consequences. It is only after marriage that the vast differences in the cultures begin to show. Little things, from food and clothes to bigger aspects like religious beliefs, tend to clash, leading eventually to a rift. Besides, there will be either personal pride or the reluctance to accept the other's views. It may lead to a big gap between the parents, and their children may suffer a lot in between. M: You have a point there, but I can also tell you of several such couples who are living happily together. W: I suppose that you are right. Intermarriage can lead go happiness or sorrow, depending on how it is handled.

Passage 1 PARIS--Defending champion Andre Agassi and Martina Hingis were named the top seeds for the French Open, the second major tennis tournament this year. Pete Sampras, who has won 12 Grand Slam titles but has never won the French Open, is seeded second among the men. Fellow American Lindsay Davenport is the second seed behind Hingis on the women's side. When Agassi won last year's final, he became the fifth men's tennis player ever to win all four Grand Slam (大满贯) tournaments. In that dramatic match, he rallied after losing the first two sets to defeat Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine. Agassi joined legendary players Rod Laver, Don Budge, Roy Emerson and Fred Perry as the only men to win all four major tournaments. After triumphing in Paris last year, Agassi continued his Grand Slam success by winning two of the next three majors. He captured the U. S. Open title, reached the final at Wimbledon and started 2000 by winning the Australian Open. This year, Hingis will not have to worry about Steffi Graf, who beat her in last year's final. Graf has since retired from professional tennis. During that close match, the Swiss teenager was frustrated by close calls and a crowd that supported Graf. Hingis was so distraught after the game that she needed her mother and coach, Melanie Molitor, to console her. She has lost in the French Open final twice in the last three years and it is the only major tournament that she still has not won. In January, Hingis was denied her fourth straight Australian Open title by Davenport, who also will look to complete her personal Grand Slam at this year's French Open. The competition between these two top women's players will be close. American women took three of the top four rankings for the tournament. After Davenport, Monica Seles and Venus Williams are seeded third and fourth, respectively. On the men's side, Magnus Norman of Sweden is seeded third. Former champions Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russai and Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil are seeded fourth and fifth, respectively.

Passage 2 In the 18th century New York was smaller than Philadelphia and Boston. Today it is the largest city in America. How can the change in its size and importance be explained? To answer this question we must consider certain facts about geography, history and economies. Together these three will explain the huge growth of America's most famous city. The map of the Northeast shows that four of the most heavily populated areas in this region are around seaports. At these points materials from across the sea enter the United States, and the products of the land are sent there for export across the sea. Economists know that places where transportation lines meet are good places for making raw materials into finished goods. That is why seaports often have cities nearby. But cities like New York needed more than their geographical location in order to become great industrial centers. Their development did not happen simply by chance. About 1815, when many Americans from the east coast had already moved toward the west, trade routes from the ports to the central regions of the country began to be a serious problem. The slow wagons of that time, drawn by horses or oxen, were too expensive for moving heavy freight very far. Americans had long admired Europe's canals. In New York State a canal seemed the best solution to the transportation problem. From the eastern end of Lake Erie all the way across the state to the Hudson River there is a long trip of low land. Here the Erie Canal was constructed. After several years of work it was completed in 1825. The canal produced an immediate effect. Freight costs were cut to about one- tenth of what they had been. New York City, which had been smaller than Philadelphia and Boston, quickly became the leading city of the coast. In the years that followed, transportation routes on the Great Lakes were joined to routes on the Mississippi River. Then New York City became the end point of a great inland shipping system that extended from the Atlantic Ocean far up the western branches of the Mississippi. The coming of the railroads made canal shipping less important, but it tied New York even more closely to the central regions of the country. It was easier for people in the central states to ship their goods to New York for export overseas. Exports from New York were greater than imports. Consequently, shipping companies were eager to fill their ships with passengers on the return trip from Europe. Passengers could come from Europe very cheaply as a result. Thus New York became the greatest port for receiving people from European countries. Many of these people remained in the city. Others stayed in New York for a few weeks, months, or years, and then moved to other parts of the United States. For these great numbers of new Americans, New York had to provide homes, goods, and services. Their labor helped the city become great.

Passage 3 Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it's painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle. During the hours when you labour through your work you may say that you're "hot". That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues(自言自语) as: "Get up, John! you'll be late for work again! "The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and -energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has. You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract (对抗) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point. Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn (呵欠) and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.
1. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably ______.
A.he is a lazy person
B.he refuses to follow his own energy cycle
C.he is not sure when his energy is low
D.he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening

A B C D

3. If one wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the morning, he should
A.change his energy cycle
B.overcome his laziness
C.get up earlier than usual
D.go to bed earlier
A B C D

4. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will ______.
A.help to keep your energy for the day's work
B.help you to control your temper early in the day
C.enable you to concentrate on your routine work
D.keep your energy cycle under control all day
A B C D

5. The following statements are true except
A.Getting off to work with a minimum effort helps save one's energy.

Part B Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written clearly on ANSWER SHEET 2. 61. If the universe is expanding, then in the past it must have been smaller than it is now. Far back in the past it must, in fact, have been only a tiny point. Scientists believe that the universe began its expansion about fifteen billion years ago(Because of various uncertainties it could be anywhere between twelve and twenty billion years ago. )This theory of the beginning of the universe is often called the "big bang" theory. However, it was not the kind of explosion in which matter flies out into space. It is space itself (the three-dimensional universe) that is expanding. Once we know that the universe is expanding, another interesting question occurs to us: Is the universe going to go on expanding forever or will it slow down and some day stop? There are three possibilities: (1) the universe will expand forever without slowing down. (2)the expansion will slow down and stop, and the universe will then contract, getting smaller and smaller, and (3)it will continue to expand, but more and more slowly, never quite coming to a stop. 62. The first possibility would eventually result in groups of galaxies that are completely isolated from one another and it would be a rather lonely universe. 63. In the second possibility, at some point the universe would shrink to the same almost nonexistent point that it was before the big bang. This might be followed by another big bang. 64. The third possibility would result in what is called a flat universe—the expansion will become slower and slower without ever completely coming to a stop. If this happens, the universe would continue to be similar to what it is now. We do not know which one of these three possibilities will happen because the answer lies in the density of the universe, which we do not know accurately enough. The more dense the universe is—that is ,the more matter there is on the average in a volume of space—the more likely it is that the universe will contract because of the gravitational force. 65. If the density is just right, the universe will be "flat." If the density is higher than this "just right" density, the universe will collapse at some time in the future. If tile density is lower, the universe will go on expanding forever. We know the density of the universe is very close to the "just right" density, but we don't know it accurately enough to determine among the three possibilities.
