The famous American gorilla (大猩猩) expert Diane Fossey had a completely new way to study gorillas—she pretended to be one of them. She copied their actions and way of life—eating plants and getting down on her hands and knees to walk the way a gorilla does. It was a new relationship. Diane Fossey was murdered in Rwanda in 1985 and her story was made into the popular film Gorillas in the Mist. It was a long way from King Kong, which is about a gorilla as a monster (a frightening animal), and helped to show a new idea: the real monster is man, while the gorilla is to be admired. Today there are thought to be around 48000 lowland gorillas and maybe 400-450 mountain gorillas in the wild. From the Congo in West Africa to Rwanda and Uganda further east, they are endangered by hunting and by the cutting down of their forest homes. Some time ago, I found in my letterbox a little magazine from the World Wide Fund for Nature. It had two photos side by side. One was of a young gorilla. "This is a species of mammal (哺乳类动物 ), "said the words below it. "It is being destroyed by man. We must save it for our own good." The other photo showed a human baby. The words also read, "This is a species of mammal, "but then went on: "It is the most destructive (破坏性的) on earth. We must retrain it for its own good."

For some time after the Spanish won Granada from the Moors, Spanish kings enjoyed visiting that delightful city. After many years, however, they were frightened away by a series of earthquakes, during which several houses fell to the ground, and the old towers shook to their foundations. After that, many years passed without visits from royal guests. The noble palaces of Granada remained silent and closed, and that loveliest of palaces, the Alhambra, lay sadly alone with no one to care for its beautiful gardens. People no longer visited the tower where once three beautiful Moorish princesses had lived. Only birds and insects found their way to those tower rooms which had once been the home of the king's lovely daughters. Zayda, Zorayda, and Zorahayda. It was said that the spirit of the youthful princess Zorahayda, who had died in that tower, was often seen by moonlight, seated beside the fountain in the hall, or weeping beside the high stone wall. It was said that the music of her silver lute could be heard at midnight by travelers passing along the road. After many years, the city of Granada was honored once again by royal guests. All the world knows that King Philip V married Elizabeth or Isabella (for they are the same), the beautiful princess of Parma. For a visit of this famous couple, the Alhambra palace was repaired and made ready, with all possible speed, when the king and queen arrived with all the lords and ladies of their court, there was a great change in the lonely palace. Drums and roy- al music were heard, fine horses were ridden about the avenues and inner court, brightly colored flags again were flown above the ancient walls. Inside the palace, however, life was quiet and calm. There was the soft sound of long robes, and the careful steps and murmuring voices of those who respectfully served the king and queen. In the gardens there was soft music, and there was quiet talk among the young lords and ladies of the court.

Why is there no risk to the customer when a hank prints the customer's name to his cheques? When anyone opens a current account at a bank, he is lending the bank money, repayment of which he may demand at any time, either in cash or by drawing a check in favor of another person. Primarily, the bank-customer relationship is that of debtor and creditor who is which depending on whether the customer's account is in credit or overdrawn. But, in addition to that basically simple concept, the bank and its customer owe a large number of obligations to one another. Many of these obligations can give rise to problems and complications but a bank customer, unlike, say, a buyer of goods, cannot complain that the law is loaded against him. The bank must obey its customer's instructions, and not those of anyone else. When, for example, a customer first opens an account, he instructs the bank to debit (把……记入借方 ) his account only in respect of checks drawn by himself. He gives the bank specimens of his signature, and there is a very firm rule that the bank has no right or authority to pay out a customer's money on a check on which its customer's signature has been forged. It makes no difference that the forgery may have been a very skillful one the bank must recognize its customer's signature. For this reason there is no risk to the customer in the practice, adopted day banks, of printing the customer's name on his checks. If this facilitates forgery, it is the bank which will lose, not the customer.

Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades. Fortunately, most educators are becoming aware of the fact that students have different interests and abilities. However, the discipline resulting from grades still exists. Grades often cut down creativity. Competing for better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to pursue music, dramatics and sports. Grades impose a subjective standard of success on everyone. 1 do not demand as some extremists do, that grades be ended immediately. However, ! do believe that less emphasis should be placed on grades. I hope that someday grades will become optional at Village High School. Magdalena Smith, President Drama Club Let's face the facts about grades. Grades perform three basic functions. First, grades motivate students to work at their highest level of competence. Second, they act as a reward for hardworking students and as a scolding to students who do not work hard. Finally, grades are used as an effective standard by which to measure student achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get in-to university, I've spoken with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired primarily on the basis of their grades. My grades helped me land a part-time job and will help me get into university next year. I think grades are extremely important at Village High School. Simon Harper, Member, Science Club

My Most Favorite Program Now there are many programs shown on TV every day. My favorite program is "The Animal World", which is provided by CCTV every Monday evening. Born and bred in the city, we cannot see any wild animals, and the program provides us with natural sciences and the life of all kinds of wild animals with the explanation of the narrator. We also learn some knowledge about animals, even some plants. So, in my opinion, it is an interesting as well as instructive program. It's really a great joy to watch it. If you don't believe it, just watch it yourself.
