Text 1
It's hard to say for sure what the next big thing will be, but these items made the list of 10 emerging technology trends that will change the world, according to the January issue of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Magazine Technology Review. "We were looking for things that were just emerging now and over the next five years would begin to have a major impact", David Rotman, the magazine's deputy editor, said Thursday. Some of the items have been on the verge of widespread use for quite some time, such as biometrics and speech recognition. Others chosen by the MIT magazine editors are topics that most people have never heard of, such as microphotonics and microfluidics. The magazine focused on developments in three areas: information technology, nanotechnology and biotechnology. One significant area in biotechnology, the magazine highlights, is work on brain-machine interfaces that could someday allow people to control artificial devices that replace lost functions. Today, research is more limited, with scientists able to take signals from individual neurons in an animal's brain and send them to a robot that can turn the signals into motion. But the potential is huge, according to Duke University neurobiologist Miguel Nicolelis. "Imagine if someone could do for the brain what the pacemaker did for the heart." Nicolelis told the MIT journal. In the purely digital realm, the magazine suggests that the field of robotics could be poised to move beyond the restricted market of Performing simple, highly repetitive tasks. "Robot builders make a convincing case that in 2001, robots are where personal computers were in 1980", writes Technology Review senior editor David Talbot, "poised to break into the marketplace as common corporate tools and routine consumer products performing life's tedious chores." Until now the problem has been that robots have been costly and difficult to design. One approach that the magazine highlights is the work of Brandeis University researcher Jordan Pollack, who builds robots that can build other robots.

即原文最后的结尾句所说:one approach that the magazine highlights is the work of Brande is University researcher Jordan Pollack, who builds robots that can build other robots(布朗德斯大学研究家约旦·波莱克的研究成果揭示出了一种新途径,那就是他正在研制能制造其他机器人的机器人。)
5. The verb "highlight" in Line 2, Paragraph 8 is used to mean______.
The health-care economy is replete with unusual and even unique economic relationships. One of the least understood involves the peculiar roles of producer or "provider" and purchaser or "consumer" in the typical doctor-patient relationship, in most sectors of the economy, it is the seller who attempts to attract a potential buyer with various inducements of price, quality, and utility, and it is the buyer who makes the decision. Where circumstances permit the buyer no choice because there is effectively only one seller and the product is relatively essential, government usually asserts monopoly and places the industry under price and other regulations. Neither of these conditions prevails in most of the health-care industry. In the health-care industry, the doctor-patient relationship is the mirror image of the ordinary relationship between producer and consumer. Once an individual has chosen to see a physician and even then there may be no real choice-it is the physician who usually makes all significant purchasing decisions: whether the patient should return "next Wednesday", whether X-rays are needed, whether drugs should be prescribed, etc. It is a rare and sophisticated patient who will challenge such professional decisions or raise in advance questions about price, especially when the ailment is regarded as serious. This is particularly significant in relation to hospital care. he physician must certify the need for hospitalization, determine what procedures will be performed, and announce when the patient may be discharged. The patient may be consulted about some of these decisions, but in the main it is the doctor's judgments that are final. Little wonder then that in the systems of the hospital it is the physician who is the real "consumer". As a consequence, the medical staff represents the" power center" in hospital policy and decision-making, not the administration. Although usually there are in this situation four identifiable participants—the physician, the hospital, the patient, and the payer (generally an insurance carrier or government)—the physician makes the essential decisions for all of them. The hospital becomes an extension of the physician; the payer generally meets most of the real bills generated by the physician/hospital; and for the most part the patient plays a passive role. In routine or minor illnesses, or just plain worries, the patient's options are, of course, much greater with respect to use and price. In illnesses that are of some significance, however, such choices tend to evaporate, and it is for these illnesses that the bulk of the health-care dollar is spent. We estimate that about 75-80 percent of health-care expenditures are determined by physicians, not patients. For this reason, economy measures directed at patients or the general public are relatively ineffective.
6. It can be inferred that doctors are able to determine hospital policies because______.
A.it is doctors who generate income for the hospital
B.most of a patient's bills are paid by his health insurance
C.hospital administrators lack the expertise to question medical
D.a doctor is ultimately responsible for a patient's health
In general, our society is becoming one of giant enterprises directed by a bureaucratic management in which man becomes a small, well-oiled cog in the machinery. The oiling is done with higher wages, well-ventilated factories and piped music, and by psychologists and "human-relations" experts; yet all this oiling does not alter the fact that man has become powerless, that he does not wholeheartedly participate in his work and that he is bored with it. In fact, the blue and the white-collar workers have become economic puppets who dance to the tune of automated machines and bureaucratic management. The worker and employee are anxious, not only because they might find themselves out of a job; they are anxious also because they are unable to acquire any real satisfaction or interest in life. They live and die without ever having confronted the fundamental realities of human existence as emotionally and intellectually independent and productive human beings. Those higher up on the social ladder are no less anxious. Their lives are no less empty than those of their subordinates. They are even more insecure in some respects. They are in a highly competitive race. To be promoted or to fall behind is not a matter of salary but even more a matter of self-respect. When they apply for their first job, they are tested for intelligence as well as for the right mixture of submissiveness and independence. From that moment on they are tested again and again—by the psychologists, for whom testing is a big business, and by their superiors, who judge their behavior, sociability, capacity to get along, etc. This constant need to prove that one is as good as or better than one's fellow-competitor creates constant anxiety and stress, the very causes of unhappiness and illness. Am I suggesting that we should return to the preindustrial mode of production or to nineteenth century "free enterprise" capitalism? Certainly not. Problems are never solved by returning to a stage which one has already outgrown. I suggest transforming our social system for a bureaucratically managed industrialism in which maximal production and consumption are ends in themselves into a humanist industrialism in which man and full development of his potentialities—those of love and of reason—are the aims of all social arrangements. Production and consumption should serve only as means to this end, and should be prevented from ruling man.
11. By "a well-oiled cog in the machinery" the author intends to render the idea that man is______.
A.a necessary part of the society though each individual's function is negligible
B.working in complete harmony with the rest of the society
C.an unimportant part in comparison with the rest of the society, though functioning smoothly
D.a humble component of the society, especially when working smoothly
A B C D
C
12. The real cause of the anxiety of the workers and employees is that______.
A.they are likely to lose their jobs
B.they have no genuine satisfaction or interest in life
C.they are faced with the fundamental realities of human existence
D.they are deprived of their individuality and independence
A B C D
D
关键词是anxiety of workers…。
13. From the passage we can infer that real happiness of life belongs to those______.
A.who are at the bottom of the society
B.who are higher up in their social status
C.who prove better than their fellow-competitors
D.who could keep far away from this competitive world
I had an experience some years ago which taught me something about the ways in which people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I had to officiate at two funerals on successive days for two elderly women in my community. Both had died out "full of years," as the Bible would say; both yielded to the normal wearing out of the body after a long and full life. Their homes happened to be near each other, so I paid condolence calls on the two families on the same afternoon. At the first home, the son of the deceased woman said to me. "If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today: It's my fault that she died." At the second home, the son of the other deceased woman said," If only I hadn't insisted on my mother's going to Florida, she would be alive today. That long airplane ride, the abrupt change of climate, was more than she could take. It's my fault that she's dead." When things don't turn out as we would like them to, it is very tempting to assume that had we done things differently, the story would have had a happier ending. Priests know that any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action they took turned out badly, they believe that the opposite course-keeping Mother at home, postponing the operation- would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse? There seem to be two elements involved in our readiness to feel guilt. The first is our pressing need to believe that the world makes sense, that there is a cause for every effect and a reason for everything that happens. That leads us to find patterns and connections both where they really exist and where they exist only in our minds. The second element is the notion that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happen. It seems to be a short step from believing that every event has a cause to believing that every disaster is our fault. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood. Psychologists speak of the infantile myth of omnipotence. A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and summons the rest of the world to its tasks. He cries, and someone comes to attend to him. When he is hungry, people feed him, and when he is wet, people change him. Very often, we do not completely outgrow that infantile notion that our wishes cause things to happen.
16. What is said about the two deceased elderly women?
A.They lived out a natural life.
B.They died of exhaustion after the long plane ride.
C.They weren't accustomed to the change in weather.
D.They died due to lack of care by family members.
A B C D
A
根据第一段第三句“Both had died out 'full of years' as the Bible would say; both yielded to the normal wearing out of the body after a long and full life.”
17. The author had to conduct the two women's funerals probably because______.
A.he wanted to console the two families
B.he was an official from the community
C.he had great sympathy for the deceased
D.he was priest of the local church
A B C D
D
18. People feel guilty for the deaths of their loved ones because______.
A.they couldn't find a better way to express their grief
B.they believe that they were responsible
C.they had neglected the natural course of events
D.they didn't know things often turn out in the opposite direction
19. In the context of the passage, "…the world makes sense"(Line 2, Para4), probably means that "______".
A.Everything in the world is predetermined
B.They world can be interpreted in different ways
C.there's an explanation for everything in the world
D.we have to be sensible in order to understand the world
A B C D
C
根据文章,我们可以看出“the world makes sense”指的是下面所说的,即“there is a cause for every effect and a reason for everything that happens”。
20. People have been made to believe since infancy that______.
A.everybody is at their command
B.life and death is an unsolved mystery
C.every story should have a happy ending
D.their wishes are the cause of everything that happens
A B C D
D
根据文章最后一句话“Very often,we do not completely outgrow that infantile notion that our wishes cause things to happen”可知,选项[D]“所有的事情都是因为他们的愿望而发生的”为正确答案。
Part B Directions:Read the following text and answer questions by deciding each of the statements after the text is True or False. Choose T if the statement is true or F if the statement is not true. If I were asked to give what I consider the single most useful bit of advice for all humanity, it would be this: Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life and, when it comes, hold your head high, look it squarely in the eye and say, "I will be bigger than you. You can not defeat me." Then repeat to yourself the most comforting of all words. "This too shall pass." To forgive oneself in the face of a devastating experience is perhaps the most difficult of life's challenges. Most of us find it much easier to forgive others. In many instances we can't control what happens to us, but we can control our reactions to what happens to us. We can stay down for the count and be carried out of the ring or we can pull ourselves back to our feet. If we are victimized by others, we must refuse to give them the power to break our spirit, make us physically ill, perhaps even shorten our lives. Most doctors will tell you that worry, anxiety, tension and anger can make you sicker than a virus. The expression "nervous breakdown" suggested that nerves have broken down, but organically the nerves are healthy. The problem is purely emotional. A doctor on the staff of the Mayo Clinic has said the majority of patients in hospital beds today are there because of illnesses that were psycho-generated. This means the sickness was triggered by an unresolved problem. I believe in blind faith. I have known people who have suffered deep personal tragedies, and this faith has helped them. But I also believe in the efficacy of positive action to overcome grief. Time is a healer, but those who help time using it wisely and well make a more rapid adjustment. Grief, in part, is self-pity turned inside out. The widow who cries, "He was everything to me. How can I go on without him?" is crying for herself, not for him. The mourner who refuses to let go of his grief eventually isolated himself from his friends. The world may stop for a few hours, or perhaps a few days, to hold a hand or to wipe away a tear, but friends and relatives have problems of their own. Life goes on—and those who refuse to go on with it are left alone to wallow in their misery. The best prescription for a broken heart is activity. I don't mean plunging into a social whirl or running off on trips. Too many people who try to escape by doing just that succeed only in taking their troubles with them. The most useful kind of activity involves doing something to help others. I have told thousands of depressed people, "Enough of this breast-beating. No matter how bad things are with you, there is someone who is worse off—and you can help him." Most touching to me is the heroism, the courage and faith of the average people in the world. Often readers who write about a problem will add something about their personal lives. I am moved by the magnificent people who write such lines as "My husband lost his sight shortly after we married, but we manage beautifully." or, "I've had two operations for cancer, but I know I'll be able to attend my son's graduation in June and I'm so thankful for that." Decide whether the statements are True or False according to the passage.

Section Ⅲ Translation Directions:Translate the following text from English into Chinese.
1. Inflation has several consequences all of which are bad. First, because the real value of money tends to decline, lenders of money, such as banks, are less willing to lend or are willing to do so only at higher interest rates. This makes borrowing more expensive, and thus may cause prices to rise even further, owing to the increased cost of borrowing. Second, there are many groups of people whose incomes are fixed or whose incomes tend to rise slowly and infrequently. In a period of inflation the living standards of these people fall and, as a result, they suffer hardship. Old age pensioners are examples of one of these groups. Third, when people see the value of money being eroded, they are less willing to save. Accordingly, there is less money available for investment in the new equipment which is frequently necessary if productivity is to increase. It may be more difficult, therefore, to absorb increased production costs. Consequently, prices continue to rise.

Innovatory Spirit
With the rapid development of science and technology, the competition we are being faced with is becoming increasingly fierce. This requires us to possess innovatory spirit which is not only the lifeline of businesses' subsistence, because only constant innovation can an enterprise surpass his rivals in such an competitive market, but also the foundation of a country's development. If a country doesn't innovate in science and technology, system and management, she must undoubtedly lag far behind other developed countries immediately. As far as I am concerned, innovatory spirit is something that we cannot develop without, especially in hi-tech and information age, because it can both improve and change our life. Of the many values that consist of our civilized society, such as honesty, kindness and so on, innovatory spirit may be the most important of all. Without it, there will be no progress, no colorful life and ultimately no modern society. Then, how should we cultivate the innovatory spirit? Here are a few suggestions, which may be of some help. For one thing, the government should set up a mechanism of innovation and encourage people to invent and create daringly. For another, the fund of risk investment should be provided by some organizations. Only in these ways will people carry forward the innovatory spirit in every field where they are working and studying.
