For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Galen, Andress Veaslius, and William Harvey were important figures in the history of man's study of his own body. Galen, a Greek who practiced medicine in Rome in the second century A. D., contributed immeasurably to the understanding of anatomy (解剖学). His dissections (解剖) were limited to Barbary apes, however, because Roman religious and philosophical attitudes made experimentation on the human body unthinkable. Even so, his reputation was so outstanding and his conclusions were so logical that his writings on anatomy and physiology were accepted by medical men for more than a thousand years. Vesalius, a Belgian who went to Paris to study medicine, made the first major successful challenge of the teachings and the theories of Galen. Vesalius shocked his professors by proposing that knowledge of human anatomy should be learned from human bodies. No one took him seriously because there was a French law prohibiting dissection of the human body. Vesalius, nevertheless, conducted research in secret. When he published his book on human anatomy in 1543, medical scientists criticized him for daring to attack the writings of Galen. Eighty - five years later, an English physician named Harvey published a book that disproved Galen's theory of blood circulation. Although Harvey's explanation was not universally accepted at the time, medical men of today credit him with one of the greatest advances in medical history.
1. Which statement about Vesalius is most probably FALSE?
A.He ran the risk of being put in prison by doing research on human bodies.

Details of telephone charges can be found at the front of any telephone directory ( 电话簿), where you will see that the cost of your call will depend not only on the duration and distance but aim on what time of day the call is made and sometimes on whether or not it is made at the weekend or during the week. Between most places in Britain it is now possible to dial direct by STD ( Subscriber Trunk Dialing) (拥护直通长途电话). Charge rates are higher for calls made from coin - box phones and call offices than for those made from ordinary lines, and calls connected by the operator are normally more expensive than calls you dial direct. STD facilities now exist between Britain and most countries in Western Europe and also with a number of other overseas countries beside. Other calls will require the assistance of the operator. Charge rates for international calls depend broadly on the same factors as for inland calls. Full details of international telephone charges and services are found in directories. Transferred charge calls are those where the people you want to speak to agree to pay for your call to them. Personal calls are those where you tell the operator the name of the person you wish to speak to. You are not connected if that person cannot be found, though a message can be left for him or her to ring the operator later. From most telephones, if you want the police, fire or ambulance services, dial 999. Tell the operator the service you want. Wait until the emergency authority answers. Then give them the full address where help is needed and other necessary information. 999 calls are free.

You should write your answers briefly in the Answer Sheet correspondingly. With the steady increase in the amount of leisure time that people enjoy today, the importance of businesses that deal with leisure products and services is also steadily increasing. One of the biggest such industries is the tourist industry. Providing transportation and accommodations for tourists - - and guides, brochures, souvenirs - - is one of the major industries in many countries. Since people are now having longer vacations and are more and more interested in seeing other parts of the world, this business will no doubt continue to grow. Another industry obviously devoted to leisure is entertainment. Movies, TV shows, concerts and plays are usually intended for our leisure. The same can be said of most books, except textbooks. Professional sports make money because people pay to watch them in their free time. This list could be greatly extended. But even among these industries, we have mentioned only part of the picture. The people who make the TV sets and build the theaters and tourist hotels are as much a part of the leisure industry as the singers or the hotel clerks. The answers should be written after the corresponding numbers on the Answer Sheet. In recent years, there has been a big increase in air travel and many large airports have now reached the limit of the number of aircraft movements they can handle. The problem is made worse by the size of many major cities which prevents the extension of existing airports. Any new airports to be built a long way from city centers will create communication problems and in many countries there simply isn't enough land for such developments. Now a new proposal has been put forward which would help to relieve the congestion (拥挤), as far as short flights are concerned. This involves the use of smaller aircraft, carrying about 50 passengers, which only require a short take - off or landing area and which make comparatively little noise because they are propeller -driven (螺旋桨推进). Such aircraft could operate much nearer city centers, say, on disused industrial sites, and give a good service to businessmen and other travelers who are going between centers, which are relatively close, such as European capitals. The main problem remaining is the question of noise. There has been so much publicity in recent years regarding the high level of noise near airports, that any government can expect to find considerable resistance to building new airports in towns, even though these short -range small planes are relatively quiet. The fact remains that increasing numbers of people want to travel by air and will accept somewhat slower flights if they can have the convenience of an airport near the city center. In the end. it's a question of compromise between the travelers and the local inhabitants.
1. Recently, what has happened to the airports due to the increase of air travel?
They can hardly handle the large number of aircraft movement.
2. What are the two main problems to build a new airport?
Communication and land.
3. What is the new proposal?
Smaller planes.
4. What is the publicity about if a new airport is built near towns?
Noise.
5. What does the success of airports closing to city centers mainly depend on?
The compromise between the travelers and the local inhabitants.
