American money is unlike the money used in many other countries, since the bills, or paper money, are all the same colour and size no matter how much it is. Visitors should be careful to look at the bill before giving it out. Besides, new bills often stick together. The coins of every country are difficult to learn at first. American coins are represented by the cent sign. Also the size of American coins do not show the value. For example, the 10-cent coin is smaller than the 5-cent coin, although it is worth twice as much. A Is Brain Death a Real Death? Suppose a man has a car accident. He is hurt badly and is unconscious (失去知觉的) ;that is, he can't think, speak, or hear. His family takes him to the hospital. The doctors tell the family that his brain is dead. A machine can make him breathe. Now the patient’s family must answer some difficult questions. Should they think he is dead? Should they ask the doctors to use the machine to make him breathe? Sometimes machines can make an unconscious person breathe for years. However, if his brain is dead, he will never think, speak, or hear again. Then, should his family ask the doctors not to use the machine and let him die? Someone who is unconscious can’t say he wants to die. Can his family say this for him? Some people think this is a good idea. Some think otherwise. Many people are hurt when machines keep a person alive. The unconscious person doesn’t know this. Machines only make the family and friends hurt longer.

B Dorothea Dix left home at an early age--of her own free will to live with her grandmother. At fourteen, Dorothea was teaching school at Worcester, Massachusetts. A short after she had begun teaching, she set up a school for young girls in her grandparents' home. Stress was placed on moral (道德) character at Dorothea's school, which she conducted until she was thirty-three. She was forced to give up teaching at her grandparents' home, however, when she became ill. A few years of inactivity followed. In 1841 Dorothea began to teach again accepting a Sunday school class in the East Cambridge, Massachusetts, prison. Here she first came upon insane people (精神病人)locked up together with prisoners. In those days insane people were treated even worse than prisoners. There were only a few madhouses in the entire country. Therefore prisons, poor houses, and houses of correction were used to keep the insane. Dorothea Dix made a careful investigation (调查) of the inhuman treatment of the insane, which was considered unfeminine for a woman to devote herself to such work at this time. But this did not stop Dorothea Dix from providing proper medical care for the insane. Gradually, because of her investigations conditions were improved. More than thirty mental institutions were founded or rebuilt in the United States because of the hard work. Dorothea also spread her investigations to England and to other parts of Europe. During the Civil War, Dorothea served as superintendent (负责人) of women hospital nurses in the Union Army. When the war was over, she returned to her work of improving conditions for in- sane people.

Aspirin and Heart Attack
Researchers have announced the results of two studies on the health effects of the drug aspirin (阿司匹林). One study shows aspirin can sharply reduce the chance that a healthy, older man will suffer a heart attack. The study offered two new results from earlier findings. It said taking one aspirin pill every other day helped only healthy men over the age of fifty. It also said aspirin gave the greatest protection against heart attacks to men with lowblood cholesterol(胆固醇)levels. Earlier studies showed that aspirin reduced the chance of heart attacks in men with heart dis- ease. But there was no proof that aspirin would do the same for healthy men. Researchers in the United States began a major aspirin study in the early 1980s. It includes 22000 healthy male doctors. All were between the ages of forty and eighty-four. More than 11000 of the doctors took one aspirin pill every other day. Each pill contained 325 milligrams of aspirin. The other 11000 doctors took a harmless pill that contained no drug. The men did not know which kind of pill they were taking. The doctors who took aspirin suffered 44 percent fewer heart attacks than those taking the harmless pill. 139 men who took aspirin suffered attacks. Ten of them died. 239men who did not take aspirin suffered heart attacks. Twenty-six of them died. The researchers said the doctors’study provided clear proof that taking aspirin can prevent a first heart attack in healthy, older men. They said, however, the results do not mean every man over the age of fifty should take aspirin. They said aspirin cannot help men who do not eat healthy foods, who smoke cigarettes and who are fat. The researchers said men who think they would be helped by taking aspirin should talk with their doctors first.
