More than half of Americans do not take all their vacation days, and nearly a third of workers who do take a break check in with work every other day and some keep in touch hourly, according to a survey conducted among 1,500 American adults. Unlike European countries where four or more weeks of holiday each year is the norm, 27 percent of people questioned in the poll said they had 6 to 10 days of annual leave and 20 percent had less than three days. With more people on the unemployment lists those still with jobs are facing more responsibility at work, which is reflected in their lack of time off.

Cultural Hot Pot
This is a very interesting and enlightening picture, which serves as a trigger for people to make an analogy between a real hotpot and a cultural one. In a real sense, a hotpot is a popular food in China because people could choose and put in the h0tpot whatever they prefer eating such as mutton, beef, and all kinds of different vegetables to satisfy their different needs of taste. But what this hotpot contains in the picture is quite different. It has all kinds of domestic and alien cultural ingredients, ranging from history, religion, literature, drama, Peking Opera to science and technology. Obviously, it is not meant for eating but it is essentially good for mental pursuits of people.
Globalization is a contemporary trend that no one can ignore. With the economic integration, culture has become a hot and indispensable topic. Never in history have so many people travelled around the world and never in history have the contacts between people been so frequent. Therefore, to understand and respect cultural differences in the globalized world cannot be avoided. The cultural hotpot is a vivid manifestation of today's world.
Just as different foods and vegetables are mixed and melted in the boiling hotpot, differences of various cultures would be collided and blended in the development of global ization. It should be fully aware that every culture is unique and every culture is a precious heritage of the world. In the trend of globalization, we should remember we are more than citizens of China. We are citizens of the world. Only by being equipped with this perspective, can we or can every culture survive better in this globalized hotpot.
Monin of Stanford University unveiled a vicarious form of the phenomenon. In one exercise, students who were waiting to participate in an experiment overheard a staged conversation in which an investigator convinced a student to present an opinion during discussion time that would contradict what he believed: he was to speak in favor of tuition increases. Students who heard the coercion and later were part of the discussion voiced less skepticism about tuition hikes than they had previously. Apparently, the knowledge of their classmate's presumed internal conflict caused cognitive tension in them as well. The easiest way to restore equilibrium was to agree with their friend's stated position.
