PART ONE · Look at the statements below and at the five extracts from an article about a post-DVD future on the opposite page. · Which extract (A, B, C, D, or E) does each statement (1-8) refer to? · For each statement (1-8), mark one letter (A, B, C, D, or E) on your Answer Sheet. · You will need to use some of these letters more than once. A.It's official: the heyday of the DVD is over. Walt Disney CEO Robert A. lger recently implied as much in an analysts' call — the only studio boss to suggest public that Hollywood can no longer count on a cash cow that has yielded billions in profits. DVD sales slid 6.3% last year. While the economy is likely a factor, it's also clear that audiences are bypassing DVDs because they have a range of other options, from watching movies and TV shows online to playing video games. As such, Hollywood executives face a conundrum familiar to many CEOs. They have to prop up a product that is losing momentum, buying time while they rethink their entire business model. B.Next-generation Blue-ray discs will give the DVD a lift, but studio bosses still are scrambling to shore up sales. lger may believe the DVD's best days are behind it, but he too is trying to goose disc sales. He has been pushing the studio to make more Disney-branded films. Not only are parents more likely to buy Disney DVDs than other movies, but Disney-branded films can be marketed through the company's theme parks, TV channels, and stores. "The Disney brand," lger says, "gives us an advantage. " C.As DVD sales decline, studios are looking for ways to cut costs so they can make more money on each disc. A primary target: the so-called backend deals that give stars and directors a piece of a film's revenues. Increasingly, executives are insisting that a film must break even before the studio will share proceeds. Sony Pictures Entertainment is forging such deals, "we can no longer afford to give away money when we can't be sure what the DVD sales are going to be", says studio chief Michael Lynton. D.Right now, most studios are taking baby steps. Rather than waiting weeks between the release of the DVD and the online and cable versions of a movie, Warner Bros. and others are releasing a select few simultaneously. The aim is to entice teens and others who aren't buying DVDs. There also are moves afoot to let TV viewers download movies after they have opened in theaters but before they go on sale as DVDS. The idea, says Fox Filmed Entertainment CoChairman James Gianapulos, is to charge a premium — some in the industry have said as much as $ 40 — for an early viewing of a high-definition flick. E.Paramount arguably has gone the furthest: It's premiering movies on the Web. Last year it streamed the comedy Jackass 2.5 on Blockbuster's site for free. The 64-minute film attracted 15 million viewers. It generated word of mouth, says Paramount, helping the studio sell the movie through a variety of sites. "You can use the Internet to launch a film like you use a movie theater, "says the studio's digital czar, Thomas Lesinski ,who plans to produce more low-budget flicks for the Web.
1. Studios have found new ways to make more profits without the sales of DVD.

The Globe Is IBM's Classroom
When 10 IBM management trainees piled into a minibus in the Philippines for a weekend tour last October, the last thing they expected was to wind up local heroes Yet that's what happened in the tiny village of Carmen. After passing a water well project, they learned the effort had stalled because of engineering mistakes and a lack of money 1 They organized a meeting of the key people involved in the project and volunteered to pay $250 out of their own pockets for additional building materials. Two weeks later the well was completed. Locals would no longer have to walk four miles for drinkable water. And the trainees learned a lesson in collaborative problemsolving. "You motivate people to take the extra step, you created a shared vision, you divide the labor, and the impact can be big", says Erwin van Overbeek, 40, who runs environmental sustainability projects for IBM clients. While saving a village well wasn't part of the group agenda for that trip, it's the kind of experience the architects of IBM's Corporate Service Corps had in mind when they launched the initiative last year. Modeled on the U. S. Peace Corps, the program aims to turn IBM employees into global citizens 2 Those people were then trained and dispatched to emerging markets for a month in groups of 8 to 10 to help solve economic and social problems. The goal, says IBM's human resources chief, is to help future leaders "understand how the world works, show them how to network, and show them how to work collaboratively with people who are far away." Like most corporations, IBM trains managers in classrooms, so this represents a dramatic departure. while other companies encourage employees to volunteer for social service, IBM is the first to use such programs for management training, says Rosabeth Moss Kanter, a professor at Harvard Business School. "This is a big innovation. This kind of active service is a good way to train managers." 3 This year some 500 people will participate, and the list of countries will expand from five to nine, including Brazil, India, Malaysia, and South Africa. The teams spend three months before going overseas reading about their host countries, studying the problems they're assigned to work on, and getting to know their teammates via teleconferences and social networking Websites. On location, they work with local governments, universities, and business groups 4 Participating in the program is not without its risks. Charlie Ung, a new-media producer from IBM Canada, got malaria while working in Ghana and spent a week in the hospital 5 IBM planners deliberately choose out-of-the-way places and bunk the teams in guest houses that lack such amenities as Western food and CNN. "We want them to have a transformative experience, so they're shaken up and walk away feeling they're better equipped to confront the 21st century. "says Kevin Thompson, the IBMer who conceived of the CSC program and now manages it. IBM concedes that one month overseas is a short stint, but it believes participants can pick up valuable lessons. Debbie Maconnel, a 45-year-old IT project manager in Lexington, Ky., says the trip prompted her to change her management style 6 She used to give assignments to the overseas employees and then leave them on their own. Now she spends more time trying to build a global team. A.The program is growing rapidly. B.It has set up a Peace Corps-like program that aims to turn top management prospects into global players. C.The IBMers decided to do something about it. D.It was coordinated with activities of 13 people in the U. S. and 12 in India, Mexico, and China. E.Anything there would be done from upgrading technology for a government agency to improving public water quality. F.Other participants report encounters with wild dogs in Romania. G.Last year, IBM selected 300 top management prospects out of 5400 applicants. H.Yet that's what happened in the tiny village of Carmen.
PART THREE · Read the following extract from an article about online ads and the questions on the opposite page. · For each question (15-20),mark one letter (A, B, C, or D) on your Answer Sheet.
Online Ads
After a decade of experimentation, companies have yet to find a reliable way to burnish their brands online. Research shows barely more than 1 in 1000 people click on banner ads. What's more, they rarely hang around long enough to absorb a brand message. Former Madison Avenue hotshot Matt Freeman aims to change all that. Freeman's company, Betawave, is developing ways to boost visitor "engagement" and plans to charge advertisers not just by each click or view but also by people's attentiveness. The concept is untested, but it has generated excitement. Several venture capital shops in December put $ 22.5 million into Betawave. "Matt's ahead of the curve," says Sean Finnegan, chief digital officer at Starcom Media Vest, which buys ads for Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, Nintendo, and others. Mad Ave was shocked when Freeman quit as Tribal DDB Wordwide's boss in June to run a small company called GoFish. Tribal is widely considered to be one of the most successful creators of online ads anywhere. GoFish, on the other hand, sold ads on a handful of lesser kids' sites, such as Mini-clip, which hosts online video games, and Cartoon Doll Emporium, where kids play dress-up with avatars. Yes, GoFish, known in the industry as an ad network, had a good reputation among advertisers looking for a cheaper alternative to sites run by Disney and Nickelodeon. But it was in debt, its stock traded over the counter, and it was losing millions a year. Freeman, who has since renamed the company Betawave, says he took the job because he saw unrealized potential. "GoFish was a tiara in the toilet. "he says, noting that the sites Betawave represents share a valuable audience: kids aged 6 to 17 and their rooms. The 25 million people who stop by Betawave sites each month spend an average of 15 minutes per visit vs. nine at Facebook, according to industry tracker Comscore. That "stickiness" has prompted Dellogg, Hasbro, Nintendo, and others to buy ads. Still, Freeman knows companies want more evidence to prove that their ads are working. " Advertisers always say, 'why am I paying for reach when what I want is people's attention?'" That's why he aims to charge not only for clicks on ads but also for how long people spend on a page and for how much they interact with the brand on a deeper level. To make that happen, Freeman is borrowing from television, which has been shoring up its prospects with "band integrations"—advertisers can veave their products and messages into the shows themselves. In midFebruary, Freeman launched something called Betawave TV. Essentially an online video player, the links of which can be found on many sites, it provides a distribution platform through which clients can integrate their messages into original shows. For the first such experiment, Freeman has enlisted Raven Symone. The Disney twin star will appear in a video and provide style tips that likely will include nods to certain products. Viewers will be directed to WeeWorld, where they will be able to conduct a makeover on a Symone avatar. Freeman plans to charge sponsors a production fee to set up sites like the Symone makeover game. Advertisers also would pay based on the number of people who log in, the number of games played, or a combination of the two. Betawave's success depends on whether visitors are drawn into the branded games and other content or simply watch what they want and move on. But for now, at least, Freeman has the advertising world's attention.

Matching Prices to Demand—in Real Time
Can an ice cream shop charge more for a cone on a hot day? Should a parking space get 1 as the garage fills up? Boston Consulting Group senior adviser George Stalk believes business can—and should—charge according to 2 The idea builds on a longtime strategy most 3 the airline industry, called yield management, in which carriers 4 prices as planes fill up. The consultant, who in the late 1980s coined the term" time-based competition", the notion that 5 is a strategic weapon, thinks far more companies could take similar steps to match prices to real-time customer demand. Such moves are especially 6 following a year when oil and commodities prices swung wildly, he notes, "companies couldn't change prices as fast as they needed to. " Stalk says existing technologies such as radio-frequency identification, GPS, and wireless networks could someday make what he calls dynamic pricing a reality. He points to Ohio auto insurer Progressive, which is expanding its MyRate program that offers discounts in return 7 demonstrably safe driving habits. Customers who 8 to the program can plug a device into their cars' diagnostic ports, often situated beneath the steering wheel. The devices then wirelessly 9 data to Progressive on how many miles customers travel, how fast they drive, and other factors. Progressive uses the information to offer policyholders discounts every six months for safe behaviour and, in states where it's allowed by laws, to tack 10 surcharges for risky driving.
PART FIVE · Read the article below about attentions on CEOs. · For each question (31-40),write one word in CAPITAL LETTERS on your Answer Sheet. Keep an Eye on CEOs Government policy decisions could speed or slow the pace of rehabilitation for the banks, and 1 turn, the stock market. David A. Hendler, a New York-based bank analyst at Credit-Sights, says his job has shifted from financial analysis toward Washington analysis. Essentially, his task is to figure 2 how quickly the government will permit weak banks to consolidate. When investors believe 3 know which banks will survive, they'll buy their stocks. The process is 4 critical to the stock market that Richard Bernstein, chief investment strategist at Merrill Lynch, is tracking six signposts for financial industry consolidation. Among them: the extent to which the government carves up and sells bad banks rather than buying into them to prop them 5 Other strategists are keeping a close eye on the people who really know what's happening in the economy: business leaders. Biderman says he'll know corporations are getting confident 6 they start buying back their own shares and acquiring other companies. Right now they show no such bravado. Announcements of share buybacks are down 90% from a year ago, leaving that market thermometer so cold that the mercury is off the scale. In the end, the timing of the bear's retreat 7 likely hinge on that great market imponderable: psychology. How investors feel has a lot to do with 8 they start seeing mixed signals as proof of a glass half-full. "The market stress causes the analytical part of our brains to shut down, and that makes us hyperreactive 9 bad news, "says Michael A. Ervolini, CEO of Cabot Research, a consultancy catering to institutional investors. People become convinced conditions are worse than rock-bottom bad, he says. Only 10 they see that they've overacted can things improve: "We look for the market to start saying tomorrow will be brighter."

3. · You work for a boot company and have some proposals to make concerning the "Borders" boots. · Write your proposal to the directors: · mention the logo, the concept and the product itself · propose the adaption of the concept "Borders" to different markets · recommend further studies in marketing strategies.
Introduction This proposal sets out to examine options for the successful globalisation of our 'Borders' brand. The initial market under consideration is Continental Europe. For the purposes of this proposal, we will be considering three aspects of the brand. namely our logo, the 'Borders' concept and finally, the product itself, 'Borders' boots. Proposals The following points summarise my major proposals: 1. My design of a new logo, a pair of Wellington boots encircled by the word 'Borders'. can be visual enough to use in markets where English is not widely spoken. 2. Attitudes to outerwear differ throughout Europe, so we should try to make our boots appeal to different market sectors in different countries. This has serious implications for the benefits of our products we wish to publicise. Although Danish farmers would be willing to purchase such a high-quality product, farmers in some countries would be unlikely to choose a British brand over a domestic product. However, we should insist on the very British style of the product and make it appeal to the style-conscious elements of the French and Italian markets, summoning up images of the English upper classes. 3. Try to make our products multi-purpose. In this way, they can adapt to suit different sectors of the European market. Conclusions In order to introduce our product to different markets, we should reconsider the logo, style and purpose of our products. Recommendation We recommend that further studies be carried out into the marketing strategies best suited to different European regions.

[解析] 13-22 Man: Folk wisdom has it that it's seldom wise to fix what isn't broken and to attempt to improve on perfection. It is therefore with some trepidation that we introduce the Fujiyama 2 Ceramic Pen, ("son of Fujiyama")after having sold over 150,000 of the original in the last few years. Fujiyama 2 is the most handsome and the best writing tool in the world. It has a stunning hi-lacquer gunmetal finish, fine gold-plated details and snappy clip. It has perfect weight and feel and, of course, just like its predecessor, it writes like a dream. And with its new cushioned Turbogrip, which lets you write for hours without fatigue, it has now been brought to the edge of the 21st century. There is absolutely nothing like it. Woman: When Horatio Nelson fought the battle of Trafalgar, he used a device just like this to monitor the movements of the FrenchSpanish fleet. Our manufacturer has created a faithful replica of this famous version. It measures about five inches in its "collapsed" position. When you extend the four sections to full length, the scope will be thirteen inches long and focused to infinity with needle sharpness. Everything will appear twenty-five times larger than it would to the naked eye. Compare that to standard binoculars which give you only 6 ×or 8×magnification. If you have ever wanted to own it, but found prices a little steep, get one now. It is on promotion from August 12th to 22nd. Man: This item casts a focused beam that can be seen for many miles. It is 20 times brighter than automobile headlights, brighter than aircraft landing lights. This powerful light is indispensable for tracking and exploring the unknown territories and for any contingencies at night. With its red gel, it can be a lifesaver in any emergency. The unit contains two sealed heavy-duty lead acid batteries and can be recharged either through your household current or through the cigarette lighter socket of your car, RV or boat. Both adapters are included, of course. It should be your companion on all your travels. Don't leave home without it—order it today! Woman: Wear it to work, to play, to swim and dive—and to rally. The Navigator is steered by a sophisticated, ultra-accurate Japanese quartz movement that is powered by a tiny mercury cell. The Navigator has both luminous analog dial and LCD display. It gives you dual time capability. The LOD display shows time continuously —in 12-hr, or 24-hr mode. Push the button and you display day and date. There is a subtle yet insistent alarm and a switchable hourly time signal. The stop-watch chronograph reads to 1/100 second and has "interrupt" and "lap" modes. A light switch illuminates the display. The Navigator is available in black metal execution. It is water resistant to 150 feet. The crystal is "mineral glass"—it is virtually scratch-proof. Navigator, 109225B for black and 109225S for silver. Man: We all love our cell phones and we have all love to talk on them-conducting personal or other business while driving. But it's really quite dangerous. Your hands are not on the wheel and your face is on the phone and not on the road. Now, this danger is a thing of the past. UH-FCPK cradles your phone. With supplied double-stick Velcro, it attaches to your dash and, with its very strong magnet, the phone attached to the cradle. Plug its cord into your cigarette lighter, tune your radio to FM 88.3, which will faithfully, and at your preferred volume, broadcast your caller's audio. Now drive in comfort, use your cell phone with ease, and safeguard yourself and your family with it.

1. What kind of idea does Paula promote on her website?
A.There're many modern working ways nowadays.
B.A modern working way has many benefits.
C.A modern life could make work harmonious.
A B C
B
[解析] 23-30 Man: Paula Wynne is the co-founder of remote employment. Her website is dedicated to home based, flexible and remote working and is promoting the idea that a modern day approach to working lives has many advantages: an increase in business productivity, reduction of transport congestion and a harmonisation of work. Today we're happy to have Paula with us. Welcome, Paula. Woman: Thank you. I'm glad to be here. Man: Paula, since you've founded Remote Employment in 2008, you've already been recognised as a pioneer in your field. You're awarded for your business efforts to understand and reduce their impact on the environment and society by BT Business and charity Global Action Plan. How did you come up with the idea of Remote Employment? Woman: Well, Ken Sheridan and I found the gap in the recruitment market for flexible home workers. We launched in February this year and we offer resources, guidance and jobs for people wanting to work, flexibly and remotely or work from home, as well as home business opportunities. Man: What makes you different from other players in that sector? Woman: Remote Employment is dedicated to flexible working options, remote working, jobs working from home, home business opportunities and home based franchises. We are also unique in that we provide advice and resources to help people finding jobs working from home, remote jobs and setting up a home business. Man: What do you want to achieve with Remote Employment? Woman: We want to be the authority on remote working. We are inspired about the remote employment culture and even in these depressed economic times we believe people should now be looking for alternative ways of working or consider starting up a home based business utilizing their skills and experience. In the same vein, employers should be looking at downscaling staff to part time, flexible or remote working instead of complete redundancies. Remote Employment offers both employers and job seekers advice and guidance. Man: What have you learned from the mentoring competition and how can others learn from your experiences? Woman: If there is any woman out there who wants to start her own business, yet holds back, I say GO FOR IT! It is about being confident and brave. Sometimes it can be terrifying going alone but if you have a great passion for your belief you can climb mountains. Entering this competition reassured me that Remote Employment is a brilliant concept. Man: Why did you want a mentor and what are your experiences so far? Woman: Our team at Remote Employment believes we have a wonderful concept and to know that the competition organisers and Karen Darby agreed, is great news for us and Remote Employment.

SPEAKING
PART TWO The candidate chooses one topic and speaks about it for approximately one minute. One minute's preparation time is allowed.
1. A.Personal management: whether to differentiate the retirement age between men and women B.Strategic planning: how to decide whether to build a new factory or have products made in others factories C.Advertising: how to choose the most appropriate form of advertisinq
A.Personal management: whether to differentiate the retirement age between men and women I do think it's reasonable to differentiate the retirement age between men and women. Female should retire earlier. The deciding factor on the age issue, according to me, is the physical condition of a person. It is obvious that the situation of men and women differs a lot when considering age and aging problems. Besides. we cannot deny that women generally take more household and children -care responsibilities, which means that they are under more pressure. It's good for women and also their families to allow them retire earlier. B.Strategic planning: how to decide whether to build a new factory or have products made in others factories I think several factors should be considered before making the decision. First, the reason for you to raise this question. Questions like this don't come from nowhere. Most possibly, they result from some kind of changes in the current situation. Analyse carefully and get a whole picture of your business. Next, list the advantages and disadvantages of the two options respectively. See which item means more to you. Lastly, don't forget to take into account the mercantile rate of return. C.Advertising: how to choose the most appropriate form of advertising The choice of most appropriate form of advertising varies from products to products. The advertising design for a car and a cake cannot be the same. So I think the key point is to locate the target market and know your potential consumers. Try to cater to their pleasure and wishes. "Hit on one likes." That may be the basic thing.
PART THREE In this part of the test, candidates are given a topic to discuss and are allowed 30 seconds to look at the prompt card, before talking together for about three minutes. Afterwards, the examiner asks more questions related to the topic if necessary. For two candidates
1. English Training Program Your company is considering a compulsory English Training Program for every employee on the premises to help employees improve their English. You have been asked to give your opinion on this scheme. Discuss, and decide together: · What do you think of this compulsory English Training Program? · How to make sure that all staff members can improve their English? For three candidates English Training Program Your company is considering a compulsory English Training Program for every employee on the premises to help employees improve their English ability. You have been asked to give your opinion on this scheme. Discuss, and decide together: · What do you think of this compulsory English Training Program ? · How to make sure that all trainees can improve their English? · How to design the program in an effective way? Follow-on questions · Would this program be equally popular among staff of different departments? · Is English a must for every staff member? (Why?) · What other ways are there for companies to encourage their employees to improve their foreign language ability? (Why?) · Should foreign language ability be considered as one of the factors related to promotion? · On what kinds of abilities or skills should the company training program focus?
Candidate B: Well, doing a compulsory course is not that boring. It helps to make learning a" must" for you. I don't see anything bad from it as it's always good to learn. Candidate A: English training shouldn't be compulsory for every employee. It's not the case that everyone has to speak English at work, right? As is always said, necessity makes the deal. English training should only be provided to those who need it, and those who like it, of course. It's meaningless to make it compulsory for everyone. Candidate B: Well, since we can hardly agree with each other on this question. Let's move on to the second one. How to make sure that everyone can benefit from this program? Candidate A: The improvement of English depends on a joint effort. The trainers should provide chance for trainees to practice, as practice is of great importance in language learning. As for the trainees, I think they should try to apply what they learn to their daily work and communication. Candidate B: The management is also crucial. They should try to motivate the employees in every means, for example, provide some kind of bonus or "scholarship" for the excellent learner. They could form some teams and hold competitions between them. Candidate A: Yes, the employees would be motivated in that way. Then everyone would try to learn more and form a learning atmosphere in the whole company. Candidate B: So everyone get some improvement. Do you still think that this compulsory program is not good? Candidate A: Well, maybe you are right. Otherwise not everyone is trying to learn in the very beginning.
