For years, France proudly resisted establishing domestic smoking bans. It held out longer than Britain, Spain and Italy, but on January 2, 2008, it finally forbid cigarettes in bars, cafés, restaurants and clubs.
This was not a decision taken lightly. Magazines ran photo-spreads reminding us that French people look seriously cool with a cigar in their mouth. There were illustrations of Charles de Gaulle, the French president during World War Ⅱ, Brigitte Bardot, the 1950s famous fashionist, and the famous French philosopher and writer, Jean-Paul Sartre. Even the present President Nicolas Sarkozy, extremely image-conscious, posed for Paris Match magazine with a fat cigar.
But now, France's traditional "café-clope" (morning coffee and cigarette) is only possible if people can bear the freezing temperatures outside.
In the latter part of the 20th century, the health risks of second-hand tobacco smoke were made public. Then, in 1975, a modern wave of smoking bans started in Minnesota, the U.S.. Since then, many countries and regions have joined in the movement. Among them, the U.S. has been a pioneer, with California being the first in the world to ban indoor smoking at all public places, including bars and restaurants. Thus some French people call the non-smoking law issued on January 2 "a touch too American".
However, studies before the ban showed that 70 percent of French people supported the enforcement. The public's positive response means that the smoking ban will be just one more U.S. trend accepted by French society. Even among strong smokers, no one wants to risk a fine.
French barman Jean-Michel, dressed in a leather waistcoat and a cowboy-style shoelace tie, complained harshly about the ban. Was he anticipating a smokers' revolt? "No," he said calmly. "People will respect it. I'll do what I did at school. I'll smoke in the toilets."

The immediate response to the birth of dolly, the sheep, was a revulsion against the idea of using the same technique to clone human beings. An impressive start, if true, but still far from the $2.5 million he says is necessary to clone the first human before 2000.
While virtually no mainstream scientist believes Seed will succeed, there has been a subtle shift in attitudes since the bearded, big-boned maverick limed into view. Seed put into words what many scientists were thinking, and few were surprised to learn last month that a team in South Korea had begun work on human cloning and even claimed to have produced a four-cell human embryo.
Seed is unconvinced. "The [Korean] results are highly suspect," he says. But he recognizes that the world is not waiting for him. "I'll be devastated if someone else does it first," he says. "But I'll get over it. I'd rather see somebody do it than nobody." That way, at least, Seed could pursue his next project-reprogramming DNA to achieve immortality—which he sees as the all-important successor to cloning. So here's a conundrum: which would be stranger, a world full of Richard Seeds, or a world in which Seed never goes away?

The upcoming movie "The Scorpions King" is a fiction, but recent archeological studies indicate there really was a King Scorpion in ancient Egypt and that he played a crucial role in uniting the country and building it into the world's first empire.
A depiction recently discovered in the Egyptian desert of the Scorpion King's victory in battle against the forces of chaos may be the oldest historical document ever found, some archeologists believe. New discoveries in his tomb suggest that the first writing may have occurred during his reign. Moreover, his tomb in the desert at Abydos may be the rudimentary blueprint upon which subsequent rulers based their own designs. In short, King Scorpion was one of the fathers of Egyptian civilization. Great achievements for a man who for nearly 5,000 years was thought to be mythical.
King Scorpion dates from a time when Egypt was composed of two separate kingdoms. Upper Egypt surrounded the upper portion of the Nile; Lower Egypt stretched from just south of what is now Cairo northward to the Mediterranean. For millenniums, all the way back to the ancient Egyptian historian Manetho and the lists of kings found in Egyptian temples, the first true ruler of Egypt—the founder of the First Dynasty of pharaohs—has been listed as King Menes. It was Menes who was thought to have unified Upper and Lower Egypt.
But in 1898, excavations at Hierakonpolis in Upper Egypt revealed sacred objects dating back to the very beginnings of Egyptian civilization. The most important of those objects was the so-called Narmer Palette, which depicted a king not mentioned in Egyptian histories. This King Narmer—a name meaning "striking catfish'—was depicted wearing both the white crown of Upper Egypt and the red crown of Lower Egypt, suggesting it was he who had unified the two lands.
Some scholars believe that Narmer and Menes were the same person. Others claim Narmer was Menes' immediate predecessor and that his name was not included on the lists for reasons that are not yet known. The argument has yet to be settled.
Also found in the 1898 excavations was a mace, the traditional symbol of kings. Themace— the oldest ever found in Egypt—portrays a man wearing the white crown of Upper Egypt, accompanied by the symbols for king and scorpion. In the absence of any supporting evidence, however, most archeologists had believed that this King Scorpion was a mythical figure.
One hundred years later, however, Gunter Dreyer of the German Archeological Institute discovered a tomb buried in the sands near Abydos, the Egyptian necropolis, or city of the dead, that he is confident is King Scorpion's. The 12-room tomb is constructed of mud bricks and appears to be a downsized replica of Scorpion's palace. Although the tomb had been pillaged and the mummy stolen, Dreyer found an ivory scepter, a clear indication that it was a royal tomb. Carbon-14 dating showed that the scepter dates from about 3250 BC, making it the oldest scepter found in Egypt. One room in the tomb was filled with pottery shards, apparently from jars used to hold wine and other valuables for the afterlife. Inscribed on each of the jars in ink was the symbol of a scorpion.
Dreyer's most controversial find in the tomb was a series of 160 bone and ivory tags the size of postage stamps carved with simple pictures that Dreyer believes are primitive hieroglyphs. If they are, in fact, writing, they predate the commonly accepted origin of cuneiform writing in Mesopotamia by 200 years.
More recently, Yale University archeologist John Darnell and his wife Deborah have discovered a primitive scene carved on rocks near the Qena Bend of the Nile River that appears to commemorate a victory by King Scorpion, who already ruled the kingdoms of Abydos and Hierakonpolis, over the kingdom of Naqada-a city that worshipped Set, the god of chaos. Darnell believes it is the oldest known historical document, and that it signifies the unification of Upper Egypt 150 years before Narmer unified the entire country. Conquest of Naqada gave King Scorpion control not only of the Nile, but also of crucial roads leading east to the Red Sea and west to the oases of the western desert.

In January, the camp gave 102 people back their sight. "It's very simple-all of our visitors fly here," said Julia Francombe, the founder. "If they stopped coming, it would kill us."
One thing on which all sides agree is that aviation is booming, so it becomes crucial to develop new and less polluting aircraft. Airbus's claim that it can save the world with the A380 may be far-fetched, but its "gentle giant" plane is far more efficient and quieter than those of 20 years ago.
Some environmentalists, however, scorn these advances, saying such measures are a "delusion." "The aviation industry is likely to vastly overstate the gains that can be made from technological improvements but sadly a climate friendly plane isn't on the horizon," says Emily Armistead of Greenpeace.

What happened? While Nike has tripped on fickle fashion trends and heightened competition before, its main obstacle today appears to be its own success. Here's why:
Big-brand backlash. When he founded Nike in 1972, CEO Phil Knight contended that "if five cool guys—the best and most popular athletes—wore his shoes, other people would want to as well. The strategy worked wonderfully, of course, and now Nike controls an astounding 47% of the U.S. athletic shoe market. But the brand has become too common to be cool. "I call it the Izod syndrome." says John Horan., publisher of Sporting Goods Intelligence, referring to the once-hip golf shirt. "Nike is everywhere." Brand expert Watts Wacker, chairman of the consulting firm First Matter, believes that the ubiquity of the Nike logo —the over—Swooshing of America—turns off important core consumers, the 12-24-year-olds.
"When I was growing up: we used to say to that rooting for Yankees is like rooting for U.S. Steel," Wacker says. "Today, rooting for Nike is like rooting for Microsoft."
The Marlboro mistake. Indeed, many cool-conscious youngsters have gravitated to other brands such as Adidas (which sells sneakers at lower prices) and Timberland (a leader in the outdoorsy "brown shoes" trend). Instead of responding with hotter products or lower prices, Nike did what many overconfident giants do (think Marlboro, pre-Marlboro Friday): It raises its price ahead of inflation. "Retailers loaded up, but the products weren't necessarily reaching consumers' closets," says Josie Esquivel, who follows Nike for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. Now, Nike is paying with price cuts—in the 50% range—last tear's models (except the irrepressible Air Jordan line).
The (Asian) economy, stupid. Nike's inventory glut is messiest in Asia, largely because the company operates few outlet stores there. (In the U.S. Nike sells almost half of its leftover shoes through its 41 factory stores and the rest through discounters like T. J. Max) Also, Nike was particularly ill prepared for Asia's economic collapse because Knight has long believed his company's sales are recession-resistant. Management expected revenues in Asia to almost double this year, from $1.2 billion, but retailers canceled orders at alarming rates. It looks as though sales will rise marginally at best.
Waffling on Wall Street. Nike worsened its woes by failing to acknowledge them soon enough. "Early last year, there was a major crack I the day," says analyst Esquivel. "It took them over two months to say, 'Oops, we have problems." She lowered her rating on the stock from buy to hold last May just before Nike warned that profits would fall short of expectations. As more negative news followed, Some analysts complained that management was hard to reach for information. One executive, CFO Robert Falcone, antagonized major shareholders and left in January.
Will Nike get back up to speed? Probably it's one of the world's most powerful brands, and Knight is resilient as well as smart. But the recovery will be long and painful. Knight and his senior managers are currently working on a plan to close facilities and reduce Nike's work force worldwide. A big restructuring charge will hit profits hard this year, and growth will likely be slow during the few years.
In order to recover, Nike will certainly need flesh products to excite bored consumers. "The lineup for the coming year looks OKEY," says Ralph Parks, president of Foot Action, the second—largest athletic—shoe specialty retailer. "It looks better than 1997's, but I'm not sure that core consumer is quite ready to jump back in."
Most important, Nike needs a new vision of itself and its brand. This task belongs to Knight, who turned 60 a few weeks ago and says he plans to work until he dies. That's a good thing, because the boss's favorite motto "There is no finish line" seems more appropriate now than ever.
