B.Holiday travellers.
C.Tourist expenditure on shopping.
D.Tourist expenditure on dining and entertainment.
A B C D

[解析] 11-13 A record number of tourists visited the city this year, and tourist spending appears to have increased. Hotel occupancy rates are likely to exceed the world average. The latest issue of the Tourist Association's Travel Bulletin says that last year's record arrivals figure of 2.5 million was passed last month. During the month, traditionally the peak tourist period of the year, hotels were reporting an 87 per cent plus occupancy rate. The Bulletin notes an increased tendency this year for people to visit the city on holiday. Last year, 65 per cent of the visitors came for holidays while 21 per cent were on business. "This year's figures so far are showing a swing in favour of more vacation travellers plus an increase in the arrivals for meetings and conferences," the Bulletin reports. Total tourist expenditure was running about 10 per cent higher earlier this year over the same period last year. Visitors spent 11 million yuan last year, a substantial increase over the previous year. Money spent on shopping, however -- the largest single visitor expenditure -- dropped slightly in the first half of the year, but spending on items suchas tours, dining and entertainment increased. Nevertheless, money spent by tourists in shops still accounted for 60 per cent of total tourist expenditure. The rest was spent mainly on hotel accommodation and meals.

A.Travelling long distances were easier than before.
B.Messages could be sent quickly.
C.Crossing the ocean could be done safely.
D.The fear of wild animals became a big barrier of communication.
A B C D
D
[解析] 14-17 Isn't it amazing how small the world has become in recent years? Of course, the physical size hasn't changed, but the world seems much smaller than it did a few hundred years ago. That's because of our improved ability to visit faraway places, contact one another, and instantly learn what goes on in other places. A thousand years ago, people rarely left their town or village. Trips to nearby areas were made on foot or horseback, and there were fears of wild animals, bandits, and bad weather. Trips abroad were almost impossible for all but the richest and most powerful people. Communications were also limited, as it took weeks or even months to send letters long distances. About 150 years ago, train travel made trips hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away possible. Also, with the invention of the telegraph, messages could be sent long distances at a low price. Many barriers of distance and communication were starting to fall. In the 20th century, inventions such as the automobile, airplane, telephone, and television changed people's lives greatly. People could travel across a city in a few minutes or across the world in a few hours. Televisions allowed people to witness important events while they took place. Computers and the Internet let people send letters instantly, access huge amounts of information, and make new friends around the world. As local communities continue to link together to form the global community, there will surely be many new tools and methods that make the world seem even smaller.
Questions 18 to 20 are based on the following passage. At the end of the passage, you will be given 15 seconds to answer the questions. Now listen to the passage.
1. Why did Spring sell his false autographs in England and Canada?
A.There was a greater demand there than in America.
[解析] 18-20 Robert Spring, a 19th century forger, was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he made some money by selling his small but genuine collection of early U. S. autographs. Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To make less the chance of detection, he sent his forgerics to England and Canada for sale and circulation. Forgers have a hard time selling their products. A forger can't approach a respectable buyer but must deal with people who don't have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals. In Spring's time, right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the Southern states, so Spring invented a respectable maiden lady known as Miss Fanny, whose economic problems forced her to scll a great number of letters and manuscripts belonging to her famous father. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty, leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his forgeries from the originals.

PART Ⅴ READING COMPREHENSION In this section there are several reading passages followed by twenty questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answers on your answer sheet.
TEXT A I first became aware of the unemployment problem in 1928. At that time I had just come back from Burma, where unemployment was only a word, and I had gone to Burma when I was still a boy and the postwar boom was not quite over. When I first saw unemployed men at close quarters, the thing that horrified and amazed me was to find that many of them were ashamed of being unemployed. I was very ignorant, but not so ignorant as to imagine that when the loss of foreign markets pushes two million men out of work, those two million are any more to blame than the people who draw blanks in the Calcutta Sweep. But at the time nobody cared to admit that unemployment was inevitable, because this meant admitting that it. would probably continue. The middle classes were still talking about "lazy idle loafers on the dole" and saying that "these men could all find work if they wanted to", and naturally these opinions spread among the working class themselves. I remember the shock of astonishment it gave me, when I first mingled with tramps and beggars, to find that a fair proportion, perhaps a quarter, of these beings whom I had been taught to regard as cynical parasites, were decent young miners and cotton workers gazing at their destiny with the same sort of dumb amazement as an animal in a trap. They simply could not understand what was happening to them. They had been brought up to work, and behold! It seemed as if they were never going to have the chance of working again. In their circumstances it was inevitable, at first, that they should be haunted by a feeling of personal degradation. That was the attitude towards unemployment in those days: it was a disaster which happened to you as an individual and for which you were to blame.
1. Why did many of the unemployed feel ashamed of their condition?
A.They imagined they were to blame for being out of work.
B.They had to live on the unemployment benefits.
C.They should have been working instead of doing nothing.
D.They had to admit that unemployment would probably continue.
A B C D
C
根据题干中的提示词“feel ashamed”,读者可在文中找到划线部分的“ashamed”及与其有关的具体阐述。原文讲到“naturally these opinions spread among the working class themselves”,文中的“opinion”就是中产阶级所讲的“lazy idle loafers on the dole”及“these men could all find work if they wanted to",其实就是说失业者是因为懒惰而无事可干。所以,失业者在这种错误观点的影响下,把无事可干归咎于自己。

TEXT B In 1983, when oil prices were still high in my area, I installed a ground-source heat pump in my brand-new, well-insulated, 1,600-square-foot house. It cost several thousand dollars more than comparable systems that use oil, gas or wood, but I figured I'd recover my higher initial expense m a few years through lower energy bills. True, my heat pump runs on electricity -- an expensive commodity where I live. But most of its energy comes from the earth, a propylene-glycol solution circulates through 1,200 feet of two-inch-diameter plastic pipe buried three feet deep in a field next to my house. As it travels, the solution absorbs heat from the surrounding soil, even when soil temperature drops below freezing. My ground-source heat pump also offers important benefits that have nothing to do with economics. ● Minimal fire hazard -- no chimney, firebox, or heating elements -- only pumps, fans, and a compressor. ● Cleanliness -- no combustion products, thus no chance of my heating system polluting the indoor air, leaving scummy deposits on walls and furniture. ● Reliability -- solid-state electronic controls and sealed bearings almost eliminate breakdowns. ● No maintenance -- no wood to cut, ashes to haul, or chimney to clean. ● Convenience -- The system runs automatically, even switching from heating to air conditioning as needed. I can simply lock the door and go away for a day, week or month. Not only did I expect to start saving on energy costs immediately, but I also expected those savings to grow over the years as oil prices continued to soar. Since I was wrong about oil prices, the big dollar savings I'd hoped for haven't materialized. Nevertheless, I am satisfied, all things considered.

TEXT C The invention of the snow house by the Eskimo was one of the greatest triumphs over environment that man has ever accomplished. In the Arctic Circle, it is not that people lack ability or industry, but the surroundings restrict constructive effort to the barest necessities of existence. Agriculture is impossible all along the thousands of miles of the north shore. The only wood is such as drifts in. Other than this driftwood, the only available building materials are snow, ice, stone and bones of animals. All of these have been used for dwellings and storage places, differing in various tribes according to the requirements and skill of the workers. The lack of necessary timbers to build walls and span wide spaces is probably one reason why these tribes construct their houses at least partly beneath the surface of the ground. This device also makes the houses more impervious to the cold. Most of us are inclined to think that the Eskimo lives always in an igloo or snow house.' This is not entirely true. After the long cold winter, the family is very apt to move, when the weather permits, into a tent of sealskin. The actual construction of such tents is similar to that used by other, more southerly tribes. The snow house, however, is an interesting and unique habitation. Our summer campers will not build with snow, but the ingeniousness of the art is worth recording, and some of our winter camps in the mountains might try to make snow houses. It is essential that the snow itself be of the right kind. It must be taken from a bank formed by a single storm, or the blocks will break when cut. The snow must be very fine-grained but not too hard to be cut with a snow knife. As Point Barrow, Alaska, houses of snow are used only temporarily; for example, at the hunting grounds on the rivers, and occasionally by visitors at the village who prefer having their own quarters. These houses are not built in the dome or beehive shape. The walls are made of blocks of snow, high enough so that a person can stand up inside the rooms. Outside at the south end, a low, narrow, covered passage of snow leads to a low door. Above this is a window made of seal entrails. The door of the house is protected by a curtain of canvas. At the other end, the floor is raised into a kind of settee on which are laid boards and skins.
1. According to the author, the building of the snow house was necessary because of ______

TEXT D Because Ireland is an island geographically near the mainland of the United Kingdom, English rulers have fought since the Middle Ages to retain political control over it. Attracted by the lush farmland, English and Scottish landowners settled there, and in time of famine or political unrest, the local workers suffered, while their landlords were cushioned by their wealth. The history of modern Ireland is, in fact, largely a story of antagonism and resentment between the Irish and their English and Scottish rulers. Since the 1920's, Ireland has been divided into two parts: Northern Ireland (Ulster) and the Republic of Ireland (Eire). The north is still part of the United Kingdom and is predominantly Protestant; the south is 'an independent republic and is mainly Catholic. The majority in Ulster accept this political compromise, but the active and mainly Catholic minority are fighting for union with the independent republic of Southern Ireland. The IRA, the Irish Republican Army, have mounted bombing campaigns on military and civil targets in Ulster and England; they have sent letter-bombs to public figures; they have shot fellow Irishmen who support the British or belong to opposing, and now equally militant Protestant groups. As a result of this, the British have stationed an army in Belfast, the IRA have been outlawed, and several of them have spent many years in prison or have died in support of their cause. Whether this level of violence and repression is justifiable, and whether the violence that could result from political change would be .worthwhile are the controversial issues that divide everybody involved.

TEXT E From a world of silence, deaf percussionist Evelyn Glennie brought some of the world's most beautiful music to the church of St Paul and St Peter the Great at Chichester on Monday evening. This attractive young Scottish lass has proved that what many would consider a disability was no handicap at all as she hypnotized her audience with a talented performance at this Chichester Festivities concert. She demonstrated her art with pieces on the xylophone, the marimba, the snare drum, 'and the timpani. With accompaniment from pianist Robert Howle, this evening with Evelyn Glennie was one of those little gems the festival seems to pull out to surprise and delight us each year. Displaying an easy and relaxed attitude and a keen sense of humor -- with many jokes directed against herself ("this is the part I find most difficult," she told us as she tuned the timpani) -- Evelyn played some haunting works specially written for xylophone, such as her own inspiring "A Little Prayer" and the lilting Scottish tune "Tween Heaven and Sea". She also "stole" items from the repertoire of other instruments -- the exciting "Czarda' more usually heard on violin, "Dreaming" by Schumann, "Maple Leaf Rag" by Joplin, and Chopin's "Black Key Study", all works written for the piano but given an extra dimension on the xylophone. The audience was foxed completely as they tried to clap along to snare drum demonstration, a "mummy and daddy open roll", and there was no falling asleep during the dramatic sonata for Timpani by Beck -- as Evelyn said herself "It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it isn't very often that you see a solo timpanist, and a female one at that !" Evelyn Glennie may not have been able to hear the applause, but she must surely have seen the warm smiles and happy faces of an audience to which she endeared herself with a charming personality and uncanny instrumental ability.
