Passage One Questions 11 to 13 are based on the passage you have just heard.
D.I could not visit my friend because it was dangerous.
A B C D
C
[解析] 11-13 Several months ago, I was planning to visit a friend who was in the hospital because of AIDS. I asked a doctor whether I should adopt any measures to protect myself. The doctor is a professor of medicine at New York University Medical Center. He said, "You are more dangerous to him than he is to you, you might have a cold or some minor infection that would be very serious for him if he caught it, because he has no ability to protect himself. The risk to you is almost nonexistent." AIDS was only known several years ago and is still as mystifying to the public as it is frightening. Though a great deal has to be learned about AIDS, our information is increasing quickly. Doctors now think they understand how it spreads, they can test whether someone has been exposed to the disease, and they know how to prevent its spread to others. Though the public's attention has been focused on fears of casual contact with AIDS victims, medical authorities agree that the disease is not easy to catch. Indeed, the key to catching AIDS lies in two areas of contact. They are sex and sharing intravenous drug needles. But people can control them. Research indicates that worries of this sort are based on nothing. 11. What was the doctor's advice?
[解析] 14-16 This story happens on a campus in the United States. One day, it was the beginning of a history class. A new student, who was the son of a rich Japanese businessman, entered the fifth grade. The teacher greeted the class and said, "Let's begin our lesson by reviewing some American history. Who said, ' Give me liberty, or give me death'? She saw her pupils lower their heads except the new student. He raised his hand and answered, "Patrick Henry, 1775." "Very good. Now," said the teacher, "Who said, 'Government of the people, by the .people, for the people shall not perish from this earth' and when was it said?" Again, she looked around and only saw her students lower their heads and dare not look at her. No response except from the new student. He answered, "Abraham Lincoln, 1863." The teacher spoke to the class in an angry voice. "You should be feeling ashamed. A Japanese student who is new to our country knows much more about it than you do." As she turned back to write something on the blackboard, she heard a loud whisper from the class. "Damned Japanese." "Who said that?" this time the teacher asked angrily. The new student raised his hand again. "Lee Iacocca, 1982." He said. 14. What's the new student?

[解析] 17-20 With the development of science, scientists have discovered more about the world. Scientists say world coastal areas must prepare now for rise in sea levels. No matter what action is taken, scientists say there are already enough greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to cause a major warning. As a result, scientists and government officials are focusing on how society might adapt to rising sea levels, changing agricultural zones, changing climates and other problems. Already, state and local governments along the coast of the United States are starting to plan for a possible long term rise in the sea level, and a few have taken action to cope with it. Agricultural researchers are developing heat-resistant and draught-resistant crops that might replace traditional crops if the climate changes. How long it will take for maximum warming to be reached is uncertain because the oceans slow such warming. Most scientists expect the maxi mum warming to take place by the second half of this century. If levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere double, sea levels will rise; estimates of the average rise are from 1.5 feet to 6.5 feet. Some leading experts regard a rise of 1 meter, a little more than three feet. 17. What must world coastal areas prepare for according to scientists' opinion?
Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.
Passage One Scholars and students have always been great travelers. Serious students were always ready to go abroad in search of the most stimulating teachers and the most famous academies; in search of the purest philosophy, the most effective medicine, and the likeliest road to gold. The point of learning is to share it, whether with students or with colleagues; one presumes that only eccentrics have no interest in being credited with a startling discovery, or a new technique. It must also have been reassuring to know that other people in other parts of the world were about to make the same discovery or were thinking along the same lines, and that one was not quite alone, confronted by inquisition(调查), ridicule or neglect. The vehicle which has made this possible has of course been the aero plane, making contact between scholars even in the most distant places immediately feasible, and providing for the very rapid transmission of knowledge. In addition one must recognize the very considerable multiplication of disciplines, particularly in the sciences, which by widening the total area of advanced studies has produced an enormous number of specialists whose particular interests are precisely defined. These people would work in some isolation if they were not able to keep in touch with similar isolated groups in other countries. Frequently these specializations lie in areas where very rapid developments are taking place, and also where the research needed for developments is extremely costly and takes a long time. It is precisely in these areas that the advantages of collaboration and sharing of expertise appear most evident. Associated with this is the growth of specialist periodicals, which enable scholars to become aware of what is happening in different centers of research and to meet each other in conferences and symposia. From these meetings come the personal relationships which are at the bottom of almost all formalized schemes of cooperation ,and provide them with their most satisfactory stimulus. But as the specializations have increased in number and narrowed in range, there had been an opposite movement towards interdisciplinary studies. These owe much to the belief that one cannot properly investigate the incredibly complex problems thrown up by the modern world, and by recent advances in our knowledge along the narrow front of a single discipline. This trend has led to a great deal of academic contact between disciplines, and a far greater emphasis on the pooling of specialist knowledge, reflected in the broad subjects chosen in many international conferences.
1. According to the passage, scholars and students are great travelers because ______.
A.standards are higher at foreign universities
B.their governments encourage them to travel
C.salaries and conditions are better abroad
D.they are eager for new knowledge
A B C D
D
Serious students were always ready to go abroad in search of the most stimulating teachers and the most famous academies;in search of the purest philosophy, the most effective medicine, the likeliest road to gold.
2. Travel was important in the past because it ______.
A.was a way of spreading ideas
B.broke down political barriers
C.led to economic progress
D.made new ideas less schooling
A B C D
A
The vehicle which has made this possible has of course been the aero plane, making contact between scholars even in the most distant places immediately feasible, and providing for the very rapid transmission of knowledge.(使得这种现象得以实现的运输工具就是飞机,学者之间即使是住的非常远,也可以进行交流,为知识的交流提供了必要的条件。)
3. It is important for specialists to be able to travel because ______.
A.there are so many people working in similar fields
B.there is a lot of social unrest at universities
C.their follow experts are scattered round the world
D.their laboratories are in remote places
A B C D
A
These people would work in some isolation if they were not able to keep in touch with similar isolated groups in other countries.(知识学科的分化越来越细,学科的繁殖导致了大量科学家的诞生,他们如果不互相交流就不得不孤立地工作。)
4. It has been stated in the passage that the growth of specialist societies and periodicals has helped scholars to ______.
A.spend less time traveling
B.cut down research costs
C.develop their ideas more quickly
D.keep up with current developments
A B C D
C
This trend has led to a great deal of academic contact between disciplines, and a far greater emphasis on the pooling of specialist knowledge, reflected in the broad subjects chosen in many international conferences.(这种趋势使得学科之间进行广泛的交流,更多的强调专业知识的融汇,这一点从许多国际研讨会选择的广泛的题目中可以反映出来。)
5. It is suggested that developments in international cooperation are often the result of ______.
A.friendships formed by scholars at meetings
B.articles in learned journals
C.the work of international agencies
D.programs initiated by governments
A B C D
A
From these meetings come the personal relationships which are at the bottom of almost all formalized schemes of cooperation, and provide them with their most satisfactory stimulus.(从这些会议中产生的个人关系是几乎所有形式的合作的根源,给他们提供了一个令他们最满意的促进方式。)
Passage Two Navigation computers, now sold by most car makers, cost $ 2,000 and up. No surprise, then, that they are most often found in luxury cars, like Lexus, BMW and Audi. But it is a developing technology -- meaning prices should eventually drop -- and the market does seem to be growing. Even at current prices, a navigation computer is impressive. It can guide you from point to point in most major cities with precise turn by turn directions -- spoken by a clear human sounding voice, and written on a screen in front of the driver. The computer works with antenna (天线) that takes signals from no fewer than three of the 24 global positioning system (GPS) satellites. By measuring the time required for a signal to travel between the satellites and the antenna, the car's location can be pinned down within 100 meters. Tile satellite signals, along with inputs on speed from a wheel-speed sensor and direction from a meter, determine tile car's position even as it moves. This information is combined with a map data base. Streets. landmarks and points of interest are included. Most systems are basically identical. The differences come in hardware -- the way the computer accepts the driver' s request for directions and the way it presents the driving instructions. On most systems, a driver enters a desired address, motorway junction or point of interest via a touch screen or disk. But the Lexus screen goes a step further: you can point to any spot on the map screen and get directions to it. BMW's system offers a set of cross hairs (瞄准器上的十字纹) that can be moved across the map ( you have several choices of map scale) to pick a point you' d like to get to. Audi' s screen can be switched to TV reception. Even the voices that recite the directions can differ, with better systems like BMW's and Lexus' s having a wilder vocabulary. The instructions are available in French, German, Spanish, Dutch and Italian, as well as English. The driver can also choose parameters for determining, the route: fastest, shortest or no freeways, for example.
1. We can learn from the passage that navigation computers ______.
5. The navigation systems in cars like Lexus, BMW and Audi are mentioned to show ______.
A.the immaturity of the new technology
B.the superiority of the global positioning system
C.the cause of price fluctuations in car equipment
D.the different ways of providing guidance to the driver
A B C D
D
Passage Three The first big-name hackers include Steve Wozniak, Bill Gates and Linus Torvalds, all now highly recognizable names behind many of the computer technologies used today. These early hackers had a love of technology and a compelling need to know how it all worked, and their goal was to push pro grams beyond what they were designed to do. Back then, the word "hacker" didn't have the negative connotation it has today. The original hacker ethic, rooted out of simple curiosity and a need to be challenged, appears to be dead. Tile objectives of early hackers are a far cry from the goals of today' s hacker. The motivation of the new breed of hackers appears not to be curiosity, or a hunger for knowledge, as it used to be. In stead, most of today' s hackers are driven by greed, power, revenge, or some other malicious intent, treating hacking as a game or sport, employing the tools that are readily available via the Internet. The rate of security attacks is actually outpacing the growths of the Internet. This means that some thing besides the growth of the Internet is driving the rise in security attacks. Here are some realities you should know 'about: operating systems and applications will never be secure. New vulnerabilities will be introduced into your environment every day. And even if you ever do get one operating system secure, there will be new operating systems with new vulnerability - phones, wireless deices, and network appliances. Employees will never keep up with security polices and awareness. It doesn't matter how much you train and educate your employees. If your employees disregard warnings about the hazalds of opening questionable email attachments, how are you going to educate them about the hazards of opening question able email attachments, how are you going to educate them about properly configuring firewalls and intrusion detection systems for their PCs.'? Managers have more responsibility than ever. And on top of the realities listed above, security managers are being asked to support increasing degrees of network availability and access. There are some good security measures you can take: employ a layer 7, full-inspection fire wall. Automatically update you anti-virus at the gateway, serve and client. Keep all of you systems and applications updated. Hackers commonly bread in a Web site through known security holes, so make sure your servers and applications ate patched and up to date. Turn off unnecessary network services. Eliminate all unneeded programs. Scan network for common backdoor services -- use intrusion detection systems, vulnerability scans, anti-virus protection.

Passage Four Every second in the United States alone, more than 250 animals are slaughtered for food, adding up to more than 8 billion animals each year. Reducing the amount of meat in one' s diet is nutrition ally, environmentally, and ethically beneficial. People who eat meat usually have weaker immune systems compared to those of vegetarians. Meat has been directly linked to diabetes, obesity, arthritis, and many other illnesses. Furthermore, meat-eaters are at a higher risk for diseases, including cancer, and they are more likely to die from these diseases. Critics say that a meatless diet does not provide enough nutrients, especially protein and iron. Actually, according to A Teen' s Guide to Going Vegetarian, by Judy Krizmanic, protein is found in almost every food, and iron appears in many vegetables. Getting enough nutrients in a meat reduced diet should not be difficult. A 1988 study found that some of the highest pesticide residues appear in meat and eggs. Diets including more fruits and vegetables will only make people healthier. Some skeptics believe that there will be a shortage of food if animals are not eaten. In fact, the opposite is true. More than 80% of the corn and 95% of the oats grown in the United States are fed to livestock. The world' s cattle alone consume enough food to equal the caloric needs of 8.7 billion people, more than the entire human population. One half of the water used in the United States also goes to livestock; 250 gallons of water produces only little beef. If people eat less meat and more plants, the amount of available food will increase. Many people become vegetarians because they feel that eating animals is unethical. 90% of these animals are raised in confinement. Chickens and other birds have only about half a square foot of space each, and since they are raised so close together, a lot blade is used to cut off their beaks to prevent them from pecking each other to death. Likewise, pigs that are repressed will bite each other' s tails, so both their teeth and tails are removed as soon as they are born. Eating animals is hazardous in numerous ways. Even a slight reduction in meat intake is better than nothing at all. Consuming less meat is beneficial to the health of animals, the health of people, and to the health of the world.
1. Why do some people become vegetarians?
A.They feel that eating animals is unethical.
B.There are fewer livestock available due to the environmental pollution.
C.The consumption of meat will lead to financial problem.
D.Being a vegetarian is beneficial to the protection of water.
