Model Essay One Job Problems for College Graduates The job market for college graduates is getting tighter and tighter. According to a survey, only 88 percent of college graduates of the Class of 2001 found jobs the year they graduated, compared with 96 percent in 1999. Why do college graduates find it increasingly difficult to get jobs? One reason is the coming of the boom of. college graduates, resulting in tile oversupply of graduates in certain specialties. Another reason is connected with their attitude towards employment. Many graduates put earnings above anything else. They aim at well-paid position in large corporations in big cities. As a result, the competition in these cities' job markets becomes more intense. In fact, college graduates are valuable resources in our country. The problem deserves more attention. On the one hand, the employment centers and college authorities should play a key role. On the other hand, it is important for graduates to have a correct attitude. Model Essay Two Job Problems for College Graduates Nowadays, college student's employment has become a hot topic. According to the statistical chart, about 12 percent of college graduates can't find the proper job in 2001 compared with only 4 percent in 1999. Many remarkable factors contribute to the huge unemployment pressure on college graduates. First of all, the supply of graduates is much more than the demand of the market. In addition, many graduates have too high expectations and they are unwilling to be employed at a low salary. Thirdly, the economic development needs excellent personnel with more than two years' experience. As to me, I think that many measures must be taken to cope with this social problem As we know, the employment centers at various levels should play a vital role. Besides, the college students should change their attitude toward selecting jobs. In a word, it calls for the joint efforts of the society to help graduates.

Population Viability Analysis Part A To make political decisions about the extent and type of forestry in a region it is important to understand tile consequences of those decisions. One tool for assessing the impact of forestry on the ecosystem is Population Viability Analysis (PVA). This is a tool for predicting the probability that a species will become extinct in a particular region over a specific period. It has been successfully used in the United States to provide input into resource exploitation decisions and assist wildlife managers and there is now enormous potential for using population viability to assist wildlife management in Australia's forests. A species becomes extinct when the last individuals dies. This observation is a useful starting point for any discussion of extinction as it highlights the role of luck and chance in the extinction process. To make a prediction about extinction we need to understand the princesses that can contribute to it and these fail into four broad categories which are discussed below. Part B A Early attempts to predict population viability, were based on demographic uncertainty whether an individual survives from one year to time next will largely be matter of chance. Some pairs may produce several young in a single year while others may produce none in that same year. Small populations will fluctuate enormously because of the random nature of birth and death and these chance fluctuations can cause species extinctions even if, on average, the population size should increase. Taking only this uncertainty of ability to reproduce into account, extinction is unlikely if the number of individuals in a population is above about 50 and the population is growing. B Small populations cannot avoid a certain amount of inbreeding. This is particularly true if there is a very small number of one sex. For example, if there are only 20 individuals of a species and only one is a male, all future individuals in the species must be descended from that one male. For most animal species such individuals are leas likely to survive and reproduce. Inbreeding increases the chance of extinction. C Variation within a species is the raw material upon which natural selection acts. Without genetic variability a species lacks the capacity to evolve and cannot adapt to changes in its environment or to new predators and new diseases. The loss of genetic diversity associated with reductions in population size will contribute to the likelihood of extinction. D Recent research has shown that other factors need to be considered. Australia's environment fluctuates enormously from year to year. These fluctuations add yet another degree of uncertainty to the survival of many species. Catastrophes such as fire, flood, drought or epidemic may reduce population sizes to a small fraction of their average level. When allowance is made for these two additional elements of uncertainty the population size necessary to be confident of persistence for a few hundred years may increase to several thousand. Part C Beside these processes we need to bear in mind the distribution of a population. A species that occurs in five isolated places each containing 20 individual will not have the same probability of extinction as a species with a single population of 100 individuals in a single locality. Where logging occurs (that is: The cutting down of forests for timber) forests dependent creatures in that area will be forced to leave. Ground-dwelling herbivores may return within a decade. However, arboreal marsupials ( that is animals which live in trees) may not recover to pre-logging densities for over a century. As more forests are logged, animal population sizes will be reduced further. Regardless of the theory or model that we choose, a reduction in population size decreases the genetic diversity of a population and increase the probability of extinction because of any or all of the processes listed above. It is therefore a scientific fact that increasing the area that is logged in any region will increase the probability that forest-dependent animals will become extinct.

[解析] 26-28 Telephone books in the United States have white, blue and yellow pages. The white pages list people with phones by last name. The blue pages contain numbers of city services, government agencies, and public schools. Businesses and professional services are listed in a special section--the Yellow Pages. To make a long-distance call, you need an area code. Each area in the US has an area code. The area covered by one area code may be small or large. For example, New York City has one area code, but so does the whole state of Oregon. If you want to know the area code of a place, you can look it up in the area code map which is printed in the front of the white pages. There are lots of public telephones in the US. They have their own numbers. If you are making a long-distance call on a public telephone and run out of money, give the number on your phone to the person you're talking to. Then hang up the receiver and he can call you back. If you make a long-distance call and get a wrong number, call the operator and explain what happened. This means that you can make the call again to the right number without having to pay more money. 26. Where can you find the telephone number of a city council in the telephone book?

She began to tell the doctor on duty a story which was astonishing in all respects. She had been driving along a country road when she was stopped by a flying saucer landing in front of her. She had been forced to leave the car and enter the flying saucer by some creatures. These creatures looked like human beings, and could easily make themselves understood although they could not speak. It was as though they could read her thoughts and she could read theirs. They treated her politely and allowed her to leave after carrying out a number of tests on her. As she otherwise seemed to be normal, the doctor decided that she was probably suffering from the side-effects of some drug. The woman insisted on being allowed to go home, but when she gave her address it was in a town over a thousand miles from the hospital. The police then started to make inquiries. They soon discovered that there was already a search going on for the woman, whose husband had reported that she had disappeared. Her car had been found with the driver's door open and the engine running. In front of the car the surface of the road had b~n completely destroyed--not by an explosion or anything of that kind, but as though a large, circular, white-hot object had burnt through it. 29. She loved driving very fast and boasted of the fact that she had never, in her thirty-five years of' driving, been punished for a driving offence. Then one day she nearly lost her record. A police car followed her, and the policeman in it saw her pass a red light without stopping. When Mrs. Brown came before the judge, he looked at her severely and said that she was too old to drive a car, and that the reason why she had not stopped at the red light was most probably that her eyes had become weak with old age, so that she had simply not seen it. When the judge had finished what he was saying, Mrs. Brown opened the big handbag she was carrying and took out her sewing. Without saying a word, she chose a needle with a very small eye, and threaded it at her first attempt. When she had successfully done this, she took the thread out of the needle again and handed both the needle and the thread to the judge, saying, "Now it is your turn. I suppose you drive a car, trod that you have no doubt about your own eyesight." The judge took the needle and tried to thread it.. After half a dozen attempts, he had still not succeeded. Part Ⅳ Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth)
Section A Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Rend the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once There is no denying that students should learn something about how computers work ,just as we expect them at least to understand that the internal combustion engine(内燃机) has something to do with burning fuel, expanding gases and pistons (活塞) being driven. For people should have some 1 idea of how the things that they use do what they do. Further, students might be helped by a 2 that considers the computer's impact on society. But that is not what is meant by computer literacy. For computer literacy is not a form of 3 ;it is a trade skill that should not be taught as a 4 art. Learning how to use a computer and learning how to program one are two 5 activities. A case might be made that the 6 citizens of tomorrow should 7 themselves from their fear of computers. But this is quite different from saying that all ought to know how to program one. Leave that to people who have chosen programming as a 8 . While programming can be lots of fun, and while our society needs some people who are experts at it, the same is true of auto repair and violin making. Learning how to use a computer is not that difficult, and it gets easier all the time as programs become more "user friendly". Let us 9 that in the future everyone is going to have to know how to use a computer to be a competent citizen. What does the phrase "learning to use a computer" mean? It sounds like" learning to drive a car", that is, it sounds as if there is some set of definite skills that, once 10 , enable one to use a computer. In fact, "learning to use a computer" is much more like" learning to play a game", but learning the rules of one game may not help you play a second game ,whose rules may not be the same. There is no such a thing as teaching someone how to use a computer. One can only teach people to use this or that program and generally that is easily accomplished. A. assume B. channel C. precise D. illiteracy E. imply F. liberal G. r course H) distinct I) acquired J) free K) career L) basic M) competent N) secured O) literacy
1.
L
[解析] 原文的意思是:人们对他们所使用的物品应该有一个基本概念。basic 意为“根本的,基本的”,例如:Basic changes in public opinion often occur because of shifts in concerns and priorities.(社会舆论经常山于利害关系和优先权的改变而发生根本变化。)
[解析] 原文的空缺需要一个和介词from搭配的动词,free... from意为“免于…,不受…”,例如:The secretary was free from all blame for the errors.(秘书没有因为犯错而受到一点儿责备。)根据原文的语境,未来的公民应该使他们自己从计算机的恐惧中解脱出来。
[解析] assume是指在没有证据或不确定的情况下认为某事是存在的或足真实的,例如:Why do you assume that I'm angry?(为什么你会认为我在生气?)原文的意思是“假如每个人都______”,暗含实现的可能性非常小。所以选择assume。
10.
I
[解析] acquire意为“取得,获得”,指通过自我努力获得,例如:acquire proficiency in math (在数学上达到熟练水平)。本文指“获得电脑知识”。
Section B Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A) , B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Passage One The so-called Americanization phenomenon seems to be a consequence of the recent globalization in our world. If we find American products worldwide, it is also increasingly common to find Asian products in the United States. Going to any country in Asia nowadays, we are going to see a lot of the American icons(图标) everywhere. A few years ago when I was in Ho-Chi-Min City, formerly known as Saigon, I was completely astonished at the number of billboards advertising products from multinational companies, many of them American. It is unforgettable for me--the vision of the spectacular Coca-Cola billboard on a Ho-Chi-Min Street. Living in the United States now, I am discovering many Asian products in America, from food to movies. In one day in San Francisco, or Seattle, or Houston, we can buy Sisheido cosmetics from Japan at the Galleria Mall, have sushi(寿司) and sashimi(生鱼片) in one of the many Japanese restaurants in the city, go to the cinema and enjoy the beautiful American-Chinese movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and take home spring rolls from one of the many Chinese restaurants in town. I understand that a great many people would like to hold back the globalization process in the world because they think they are losing their own culture, but it is very difficult to stop this process. We can only try to be critical and choose what is best for us to have or to buy. However, many people think that young people are not free to choose when they are constantly exposed to attractive advertisements that are specially made to capture the youth market. Peaceful protests could be arranged just to help people to think about the situation, but the tendency in our world is that we want globalization, but we don't want to lose our own culture.
1. The Americanization phenomenon is more possible to be the result of______.
A.the influence of Americanization on the world
B.the influence of the West on the East
C.the globalization in the world
D.American products worldwide
A B C D
C
[解析] 事实细节题。文章首句提到"The so-called Americanization phenomenon... globalization in our world.”(所谓的美国化现象似乎是世界近来出现的全球化趋势的一个产物。)由此可知,美国化现象可能是全球化的产物。[避错指导]A)项“美国化现象对世界的影响”,B)项“西方对东方的影响”,这两项显然与题意不符;D)项“美国产品遍及世界”与美国化现象并不构成因果关系。
2. What was the author of the passage particularly impressed by?
A.The wonderful American-Chinese movie.
B.The delicious Japanese food in American cities.
C.The high quality of Asian products.
D.The fantastic advertisement for an American product.
A B C D
D
[解析] 推理判断题。文章第二段首先谈到:如果去任何一个亚洲国家,随处都能见到许多美国标志。然后用亲身经历加以说明,如:I was completely astonished at the number of billboards advertising products from multinational companies, many of them American.(我完全被各种跨国公司宣传美国产品的广告牌震惊了。)以及It is unforgettable for me... on a Ho-Chi-Min Street.(看见可口可乐巨大的广告牌,那情景让我难以忘怀。)由这些都可以推断出,作者对美国产品的精彩广告印象深刻。
3. We can learn from the passage that One of the consequences of globalization that many people worry about is ______.
A.the spread of culture from one country to another
B.the destruction of cultural identities
C.the prevalence of American culture
D.the resistance to globalization worldwide
A B C D
B
[解析] 事实细节题。文章第四段首句提到“I understand... because they think they are losing their own culture”(世界上有很多人抵制全球化进程,这是因为他们认为在全球化进程中各国自身的文化会有所丧失)。由此可知,很多人担心全球化的后果是文化特征的丧失,故B)项为正确答案。
4. What attitude should we have towards the globalization process?
5. Young people today can't really choose what they should buy because they______.
A.are influenced by American culture
B.don't know what is suitable for them
C.are critical about everything in the world
D.are faced with too many powerful advertisements
A B C D
D
[解析] 事实细节题。文章最后一段首句指出“... to choose when they are constantly exposed to attractive advertisements...”(年轻人经常在面对专为他们制作的精彩广告时,就不能自由选择)。由此可知,年轻人之所以不能决定买什么是因为他们面对太多充满诱惑力的广告,而难以做出决定。
Passage Two The ordinary family in colonial North America was primarily concerned with simple physical survival and beyond that, its own economic prosperity. Thus, children were valued in terms of their productivity, and they assumed the role of producer quite early. Until they fulfilled this role, their position in the structure of the family was one of subordination (次要), and their psychological needs and capacities received little consideration. As the society became more complicated, the status of children in the family and in the society became more important. In the complex, technological society that the United States has become, each member must fulfill a number of personal and occupational roles and be in constant contact with a great many other members. Consequently, viewing children as potentially acceptable and necessarily multifaceted members of society means that they are regarded more as people in their own fight than as utilitarian organisms. This acceptance of children as equal participants in the contemporary family is reflected in the variety of statutes protecting the rights of children and in the social and public welfare programs devoted especially to their well-being. This new view of children and the increasing contact between the members of society has also resulted in a surge(激增) of interest in child-rearing techniques. People today spend a considerable portion of their time consulting the proper way to bring up children. It is now possible to affect the details of the socialization of another person's child by spreading the gospel (信条) of current and fashionable theories and methods of child rearing. The socialization of the contemporary child in the United States is a two-way communication between parent and child rather than a one-way, parent-to-child training program. As a consequence, socializing children and living with them over a long period of time is for parents a mixture of pleasure, satisfaction, and problems.
