2.
A.The woman is an unusual student.
B.The man is a rigid person.
C.The woman's request will be granted.
D.No make-up exam will be given.
A B C D
C
W:May I take a make-up exam next week? M:It's not my policy to give make-up exams, but the circumstances in your case are unusual. Q:What can be concluded from the conversation?
3.
A.All films are boring indeed.
B.Some of the films are worth seeing.
C.He never sees films himself.
D.He loves to see films.
A B C D
B
[解析] M:Do you have more tickets for tomorrow's film? W:No,but l can give you mine.I haven't been to the cinema for a long time.I think all the films are boring. M:But not all the films are like what you said,I suppose. Q:What can we learn from the man's response?

[解析] W:Will you have a chance to pick up my coat at the cleaner's today. I'd do it myself, but I promised the children I'd take them to the beach, and I'm sure we won't get back until dinner. M:I'll be glad to.I have to go to the post office this afternoon anyhow, and I'll pick it up on my way. Q:What did the man say he'd do for the woman?
be glad to“乐于…”和pick it up on my way“在我的路上取回它”都可以说明这位男士会帮女士取衣服。
7.
A.Compare her own papers to others.
B.Watch out for the usual typing mistakes.
C.Have someone else type her papers.
D.Ask another person to check her work.
A B C D
D
M:Do you always look over your own papers for typing mistakes? W:I usually have to do it myself. But I'd rather have someone proofread them. Q:What would the woman prefer to do?
would rather do在一定程度上可等同于prefer to do。

B.To have a talk with the director about his work.
C.To arrange an appointment for him with the director.
D.To help the director do the busy work.
A B C D
C
M;I'd like to have a talk with your director sometime this week.Could you arrange it for me? W:He's rather busy these days, but I'll see what l can do. Q:What's the man asking the woman to do?
I'll see what I can do“我会尽力而为”。
Section B Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. C.Foul smells put women in a bad mood.
D.Men said the pain from holding their hands in very hot water lessened while smelling a sweet aroma.
A B C D
B
[解析] 11-13 Sweet scents, such as the smell of roses or almonds, could help to relieve pain, but the effect only seems to work in women. In a study by scientists at the University of Quebec in Canada, women and men both said they felt better when they sniffed pleasant fragrances while foul smells put them in a bad mood. But only the women said the pain from holding their hand in very hot water lessened while smelling a sweet aroma and intensified When they sniffed vinegar or other foul smells. Women are usually more sensitive to scents than men but New Scientist magazine said that doesn't explain why sweet scents are a pain relief for women but not men, because both sexes rated the intensity of the pain the same. "Pleasant sensations of touch are known to activate an area of the brain's frontal cortex used for taste and smell. So it’s possible that smells could be altering the sensory processing of touch, pain and temperature by affecting this part of the brain in women, "the magazine said. 11.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

Passage Two Questions 14 to 17 are based on the passage you have just heard.
[解析] 14-17 Hollywood produces many different kinds of films, including mysteries, musicals, love stories, and horror films. Different as these films may be, they generally have one thing in common conflict. The main character wants something very badly and will do anything to get it. The opponent tries to stop the main character from achieving his goal. This opposition creates conflict, and conflict is the heart of drama. To give an example, let's say the main character is a young man of humble origin who wants to marry the beautiful daughter of a rich banker. The father thinks the young man is unworthy of his daughter, and he does not allow her to see him. The young man, who is very much in love, refuses to give up without a fight. The conflict between the young man and the girl's father is what makes the story interesting: it forces the main character to take action, and through their actions we can see them as they really are. In a good story, the main character changes he is not the same at the end of the story as he was at the beginning. He learns something from his experience that makes him a different, perhaps better person. And we learn something from watching him. Good movies not only entertain us, they also help us understand a little more about life. 14.What is common to all the films produced in Hollywood?

You should decide on the best Choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the Centre.
Passage One Presidential primaries are underway in Virginia and Tennessee. The contests will give an indication of whether Massachusetts Senator John Kerry can maintain his front-runner status among the Democratic candidates as the nomination process moves through the South. Senator Kerry is looking for his first wins in the South. Public opinion polls indicate he could get them in Virginia and Tennessee, a breakthrough that analysts say could prove to voters that he has emerged as the strongest candidate to take on President Bush in November. "We are going to reject the cynicism(犬儒主义;玩世不恭 ) and the radical direction this administration is taking us," he said. But two candidates who are from the South, North Carolina Senator John Edwards and retired General Wesley Clark, who is a native of Arkansas, are both hoping Tuesday's primaries will slow the Kerry momentum. If they are unable to beat John Kerry in the South, however, some Democratic Party leaders are suggesting they should consider quitting the race. But John Edwards is vowing to stay in the contest, even if he finishes second. "What I want to do is finish in the top two here in Virginia, top tow in Tennessee. Then we go on to Wisconsin. As I said earlier, I think this thing is very quickly narrowing to a two- person race," he said. Virginia is home to a large concentration of active duty and retired military personnel, and both Senator Kerry and retired General Wesley Clark have worked to court the military vote. General Clark spent the hours before the primary working to draw a distinction between himself and long-time Senator Kerry and first-term Senator Edwards, a lawyer by profession. "You got some choices in this race. You got a great lawyer, he is a wonderful man, he is a great lawyer. You got a man who spent his life in the Senate. He is a wonderful legislator. Or you got somebody like me," he said. Notably absent from campaigning in the South has been former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, who has yet to win any state primaries or caucuses(预备会议 ). He is concentrating on winning next week's primary in Wisconsin. But in a reversal he says he is no longer considering ending his campaign, if he does not win there.
1. How many Democratic candidates are there in presidential primaries through the South mentioned in the passage?
A.Two.
B.Three.
C.Four.
D.Five.
A B C D
B
Notably absent from campaigning in the South has been former Vermont Governor Howards Dean... “值得一提的是,退出南部竞选的前佛蒙特政府官员Howards Dean”,所以事实上文中提到参加南部预选的应为Kerry, Edwards和Clark,即只有三个人,因此[D]是正确的。
2. John Kerry can probably maintain his front-runner status among the Democratic candidates if he can ______.
A.run faster than the others in the contest
B.go in for the presidential primaries in the South
C.win the presidential primaries in the South
D.win the presidential primaries in Virginia and Tennessee
A B C D
D
The contests will give an indication of whether... John Kerry can maintain his front-runner status... “这些竞赛将为John Kerry能否保持他的领跑者地位给出提示”。由此可推知,Kerry保持领跑者的关键在于这场竞选活动的成功与否,而从上句Presidential primaries are underway in Virginia and Tennessee,由此可以推知,contests指代的就是在这两个州的竞选活动。
3. The word "them" (Line2,Para. 2)might refer to ______.
A.the public opinions
B.John Edwards and Wesley Clerk
C.the analysts' viewpoints

B.he can't bear his failure in the race
C.he wants to be in the top two in the race
D.he wants to go on for the primary in Wisconsin
A B C D
C

5. Wesley Clark may gain a large number of voters' support in Virginia because
A.he spent many hours on preparing before the primary
B.he is totally different from the other two candidates
C.he is a retired general that once lived a military life
D.there's a distinction between Clark and the other two
A B C D
C
Virginia is home to a large concentration of active duty and retired military personnel... “弗吉尼亚州是一大群现役军人和退伍军人的集中地…”。Clark本身是一位久经沙场的退伍将军,由此可以推出,Clark最有可能获得支持的优势在于他的这一身份能获得该州军人居民的支持。因此,[C]“他是一个有过军旅生涯的退休将军”是正确答案。
Passage Two The European Commission and software giant Microsoft have not been able to settle anti-trust(反托拉斯) charges, clearing the way for a landmark ruling against the company could be adopted next week, that would target it as an abusive monopoly(垄断). European Union Competition Commissioner Marlo Moni told reporters in Brussels that, after several days of talks, no settlement was possible. "We made substantial progress toward resolving the problems that had arisen in the past, but we were unable to agree on commitments for future conduct," he said. "In the end, I had to take a decision--to decide what was best for competition and consumers in Europe." The EU decision, which is to be adopted next week, will require Microsoft to supply a second version of its Windows operating system, without the built-in audiovisual software, called Media Player. The Commission has said this unfairly hurts rivals such as RealPlayer. Brussels will also order Microsoft to share information with rival server makers, and impose a fine that could be hundreds-of-millions of dollars. In addition, Microsoft will be found to have abused its dominant market position in the EU, which could clear the way for additional legal action against the company in all EU countries. The EU expands to 25 nations in May. In a statement, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said the two sides were not able to agree on principles for new issues that could arise in the future. But he expressed hope that perhaps the case can be settled at a later stage. Commissioner Monti said he wants the case to send a message. "I believe that competition and consumers in Europe will be better served with a decision that creates a strong precedent," he said. "It is essential to have a precedent, which will establish clear principles for the future conduct of a company with such a strong dominant position in the market." Commissioner Monti also praised what he called the constructive and cooperative spirit of the Microsoft negotiating team. Microsoft can appeal against any European Commission decision on sanctions in EU courts.
1. Microsoft will be targeted as an abusive monopoly because ______.
A.it supplies its Windows operating system with built-in RealPlayer
B.it doesn't share hundreds-of-millions of dollars with rival server makers
C.it refuses to cooperate with the EU commisssion in the anti-trust charges
D.it abuses its dominant position in the European Union's market
2. We can infer from the passage that the anti-trust problems ______.
A.are no way to be settled
B.will never be raised to the schedule again
C.may be settled later in the future
D.have been settled already
A B C D
C
But he expressed hope that perhaps the case can be settled at a later stage“但他表达了迟些时候这个问题可能得到解决的希望”。
3. The saying of "send a message "(Line 1, Para. 8) can be best interpreted as ______.
A.offer some information
B.set an example
C.stablish competition rules
D.warn Microsoft
A B C D
C
4. The commissioner makes such a decision for deep purpose of __
A.setting an example for other companies
B.benefiting competition and consumers in Europe
C.creating a precedent for companies similar to Microsoft
D.punishing Microsoft for its monopolistic behavior
A B C D

5. It can be concluded from the passage that the attitudes of the two sides are ______.
A.aggressive
B.friendly
C.hateful
D.sincere
A B C D
D
But he expressed hope that perhaps the case can be settled at a later stage“但他表达了问题可能在迟些得到解决的希望”;文章第十段又提到:Commissioner Monti also praised what he called the constructive and cooperative spirit of the Microsoft negotiating team“Monti委员也赞扬了微软谈判小组的很有建设性和团队合作意识的精神”。
Passage Three When two tectonic (地壳构造的) plates beneath the Indian Ocean cracked past each other at 0:59 GMT on 26 December 2004, the sea floor was forced upwards by some 10 metres. This displaced in the region of a trillion tonnes of water, driving it towards southeast Asia's coastline in a long, low-amplitude wave travelling at up to 900 kilometres per hour. When the wave reached shallower water near the coast, it shortened, slowed and gathered into surges that killed at least 150,000 people across a dozen countries. In the aftermath of the disaster, casualties continue to mount at a ferocious pace. Seismologists(地震学家) knew about the magnitude 9 earthquake within minutcs, but the absence of monitoring equipment in the ocean itself meant that they didn't know for sure that a tsunami had occurred. Those who suspected as much were unsure how to get the word out to the regions most at risk. Although the small global community of tsunami researchers had expressed some concerns about the risk of such an event, little had been done to plan for it. "It is always on the agenda ," says Vasily Titov, a tsunami researcher at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in Seattle, Washington. But he says that it has been difficult to raise the money for a monitoring system. "Only two weeks ago it would have sounded crazy," he says. "But it sounds very reasonable now. The millions of dollars needed would have saved thousands and thousands of lives." The most recent comparable event in the region took place in 1883. In contrast, earthquakes in Chile in 1960 and Alaska in 1964 led to the creation of a reasonably sophisticated tsunami warning system in the Pacific Ocean. Two international tsunami warning bodies exist under UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC): the International Coordination Group for the Tsunami Warning System in the Pacific, known as ITSU, and the International Tsunami Information Center (ITIC) based in Hawaii. They get by on annual budgets from the IOC of about US $ 40,000 and $ 80,000, respectively, which are supplemented by grants from nations on the Pacific rim.
1. it can be concluded from the first two paragraphs that ______.
A.the earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean caused two plates cracked past each other
B.the strength of a tsunami depends on the displacement of the ocean floor
C.the shallower water near the coast killed 150,000 people in twelve countries
D.the surges continue to move on at a great speed even after the disaster
A B C D
B
This displaced in the region of a trillion tonnes of water, driving it towards southeast Asia's coastline in a long,low-amplitude wave travelling at up to 900 kilometres per hour“这在一片万亿公吨的水域造成断层,推着它朝东南亚海岸以长而低幅的波浪形式、每小时900公里的速度前进”。
2. As is shown in the passage, the seismologists were sure that ______.
A.there would be a tsunami occurring after the quake
B.the monitoring equipment in the ocean has been in place
C.there was an earthquake of magnitude 9 in a few minutes
D.the regions were going to experience an enormous disaster
A B C D
C
Seismologists knew about the magnitude 9 earthquake within minutes... “地震学家知道在几分钟内发生了一场九级地震”。后面提到的事情都是用 didn't know for sure“不确定知道”,were unsure“不确定”等词来表达的。
3. By saying "It is always on the agenda"(Line 2-3,Para. 4), Vasily Titov means ____.
A.governments attach great importance to forecast the emergence of tsunami
B.people have noticed the danger of tsunami but done little to plan for it
C.there has been enough money to establish a constantly monitoring system
D.it's reasonable to raise millions of dollars to help those disaster areas
A B C D
B
题目问的是:通过说“It is always on the agenda”,Vasily Titov的意思是______。
4. How many severe tsunami events are mentioned in the passage?
A.One.
B.Two.
C.Three.
D.Four.
A B C D
B
The most recent comparable event in the region took place in 1883“该地区最近发生类似事件的时间是1883年”。
5. We can learn from the passage that the primary function of ITSU and ITIC is to
A.create an advanced warning system
B.prompt the cooperation among countries
C.raise funds from Pacific nations
D.provide the tsunami warning messages
A B C D
D
Two international tsunami warning bodies exist under UNESCO's IOC:... (ITSU),and...
Passage Four Private and state-owned companies in India plan to raise billions of dollars through new offerings on the Indian stock markets this year. The rush to offer shares in the capital market is being led by the Indian government. It wants to raise more than $ .3 billion from sales of its holdings in seven state-owned companies by the end of March. These include India's largest gas transmission company, the Gas Authority of India Limited, and the nation's biggest gas exploration firm, the Oil and Natural Gas Commission. The government is making ten percent of the shares of each company available to the public. The sales are part of the government's plan to privatize some of the country's largest state-owned firms. India began dismantling its old socialist-style economy 13 years ago, opening up many sectors to private investment. Several private companies have also announced plans to raise capital on the markets during 2004. They include India's largest information technology firm, Tata Consultancy Services. Stock market analysts estimate that nearly $10 billion worth of these new shares will be in the pipeline in 2004. They are calling it the "nation's biggest equity bazaar". Indian stock markets surged by more than 70 percent last year. Rajesh Jain, Director at a brokerage firm, Pranav Securities, says the boom triggered new interest among foreign investors in the Indian stock markets. "Overall the sense and the mood we get in the market is that India is an economy which is being watched with a lot of interest and this is one emerging market where global fund managers are seeking to invest," he said. Foreign investors pumped about $ 7 billion into the Indian stock markets last year nearly ten times the amount of 2002. Stock market analysts are warning that the huge number of new shares could depress stock markets in the short run. But they say there is optimism that the Indian economy will continue to be buoyant(降而复升). Economic growth in the financial year ending March is expected to touch about eight percent--nearly double what it was last year. Economists say this is the result of a simultaneous revival in the services, manufacturing and agricultural sectors.

After a few years of starting stories but never finishing them, Flavia Bujor decided it was time for her to complete something. So, she decided to write a novel--at the age of 12. She was 14 when the book was published. "Writing was a passion for me since I was very young," said Bujor, now 15. Bujor, who lives in Paris, was in New York last week for the American release of her book. The book has made it onto best-seller lists in Europe. More than 20 publishers elsewhere in the world have bought the rights to publish it. Success comes as a surprise to Bujor, who wrote the book primarily to see if she could. She would write a chapter and then hand the work to family and friends to see if they liked it and thought she should continue. "For me it's like a dream, "said Bujor, a soft-spoken, slender, tall young woman with long brown hair. "I really didn't think it was possible to publish it." The Prophecy of the Stones caught the attention of a French publishing house when a family friend sent in some pages Bujor had mailed to him for his opinion. Since then, the novel has sold 20,000 copies in France and Italy, and more than 30,000 in Germany. In the United States, the initial print run is 65,000 copies. Bujor is already at work on her second novel, which she says will be nothing like her first. "I really don't want people to think ... I will always write this kind of book. It was just a beginning," she said. "My way of writing has changed a lot." Different, but also determined to be a normal teenager. That means promotional tours only during school holidays, continuing her schooling, and going on with plans to attend university. Her book royalties will be used to pay for that. Even after college, Bujor plans to continue writing but also plans to do something else. She doesn't know what that is, but she's sure her life will involve more than sitting in the house, writing from dawn to dusk. For now, she just enjoys being 15, taking piano lessons and hanging out with friends.

Part Ⅴ Writing Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic What Role Should Examinations Play in the Process of Study. You should Write at least 120 words according to the outline given below in Chinese:
What Role Should Examinations Play in the Process of Study
What Role Should Examinations Play in the Process of Study It is a common sense that examinations have become one of the important things of the study in China: Once people referred to a person who is said to make progress in his study, they always mean that he has acquired better scores in the examinations. It sounds as if examinations are the final purpose of study, which will actually be true at present. We, Chinese students, have to pass numerous exams in the process of study, which makes examinations an indispensable part of our lives. It is true that the score of an examination helps to evaluate the extent to which we manage to master certain knowledge, but it ought not to become the only criterion, A high score of an examination does not necessarily mean that one has done well in his study, because examination itself is related with a limited range of knowledge. It is quite a pity that some students took examinations as their final goal of study, and they cared nothing but the score. As a result, they only learn what is to be tested or even cheat on the exams. With such a passive attitude towards study, they just ignore the essence of the study and would finally lose themselves in the ocean of exams. It ought to be made clear that the score of an examination is merely a relative criterion for evaluating one's study. It will be wise for students not to be concerned only about the scores they get in the examinations but about what they really learn through the process of study.
