Task 1 To begin with, moral values in America are like those in any culture. But the stories and traditions that teach them are unique to each culture. Not only that, but culture has an effect on how people show these virtues. One of the most basic moral values for Americans is honesty. The well-known legend about George Washington and a cherry tree teaches this value clearly. Another virtue Americans respect is perseverance. Remember Aesop's fable about the turtle and the rabbit that had a race? The rabbit thought he could win easily, so he took a sleep. But the turtle finally won because he did not give up. Compassion (同情心) may be the queen of American virtues. In 1992, people in Iowa sent truckloads of water to help Floridians hit by a hurricane. The next summer, during the mid-west of flooding, Florida returned the favor. There are more moral values honored by Americans. Courage, responsibility, loyalty, gratitude and many others could be discussed. But no matter how long or short the list is, moral values are invaluable. They are the foundation of American cultures--and any culture.

Task 2 In one way of thinking, failure is part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The "spider-story" is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the thirteenth century, watched a spider spinning a web after trying six times. On the seventh he made it. Bruce took heart and defeated the English. Edison made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make light bulb(灯泡). So first, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions fight? Were you well prepared? What can you change so things will go right next time? Second, is the goal you're trying to reach the right one? Try to think about what your real goals may be. Think about: "If I do succeed in this, what can I get from it?" The third thing to bear in mind about failure is that it's a part of life. Learn to "live with yourself" even though you may have failed. Remember, "You can't win them all. "

Task 3 There are 3 types of university courses in the U. S. A.. The first one is called a lecture course. If you' re an undergraduate in almost any field or major. You can expect to spend between four and six hours a week attending lectures for each class. Lecture courses are often held in very large rooms because undergraduate courses such as Introduction to Psychology or Introduction to Economics can have as many as two or three hundred students, especially at large universities. During a lecture, the professor talks and you have to take notes. And this is very important because the information in a lecture is not the same as the information in your books, and you can expect to have questions on your exams that are based on the lectures. So it isn't enough just to read your textbooks, like it is in some countries: here you have to attend lectures as well, and you have to take notes. Now, in a typical week, for every class you're taking you'll also have a class called a discussion section. This class meets one or two hours a week, and what it is, it's a small class with maybe only twenty or thirty students. This class is where you can ask questions about the lectures, the reading, and go over the homework. In large universities discussion sections are taught by graduate students who are called teaching assistants, or TA's. The third kind of class I want to mention is the lab class. If your major is chemistry or physics or any other science, you'll have to spend several hours a week in the lab, the laboratory. This is where you do your experiments. Now what this means is that science majors spend more time in various classrooms than nonscience majors do. But on the other hand, people who major in subjects like business or anthropology usually have to read and write more than science majors do. College Courses Types of courses 1. lecture · hours a week: 1 · class size: 2 students · lectures given by professors · note-taking is important 2. Discussion section · hours a weak: 1 ~ 2 hours · class size: 3 students · purpose: ask questions · taught by 4 3. 5 · science majors spend more time in class than nonscience majors
