My View on the Spring Festival
In China, of all festivals the Spring Festival is attached the most importance. When talking about the source of the Spring Festival, we'll date it back to 3 000 years ago when people celebrated the passing of a peaceful year and welcomed a new one.
There are many conventional customs in the Spring Festival. The most significant meal of the year is the reunion dinner that is eaten on New Year's Eve with members of the extended family. People who work or study in other places will endeavor to return home in time for it. The reunion dinner indicates the supreme importance of the family in Chinese culture and strengthens the sense of togetherness and cohesion.
However, along with economic globalization, exotic customs and cultures are eroding bit by bit ours. More and more people perceive that the traditions and customs of the Spring Festival are out of step with modern lifestyle. Many people have altered the style of traditional celebration. In spite of the exorbitant costs, they choose posh restaurants for their reunion dinner. It is not novel for whole families or extended families to go away during the festival. Some people who dislike being visited by relatives and friends would even seek temporary refuge in a local hotel. With laws of forbidding fireworks and firecrackers put in force, most of the cities celebrate the Spring Festival quietly.
As far as I am concerned, as time goes by, the Spring Festival will gradually lose its significance and traditional appeal and fewer people regard it as important as before. Perhaps modern Chinese will not celebrate it any more in the future.
