Part-time Jobs Nowadays, lots of college students are doing part-time jobs. Some of them choose to work as tutors; others serve as tour guides or do whatever work they can find. Part-timers are common among college students. Working part-time during the academic life has both advantages and disadvantages. By doing pan-time jobs, college students can broaden their vision and gain some experience, which can hardly be achieved ma campus but may benefit them a great deal in their future lives. Besides, pan-time jobs can pr*vide students with pocket money and help them realize serf- reliance. For some students, earning money is their dream, by which they can not only ease their parents' burden but also enjoy the feeling d independence. The most important is that doing part-time jobs can mature students. Dating working, students may have a taste of life—joy, bitterness, failure, and success. This will help them grow up. However, part-time jobs can also have same negative effects on college students. Working may occupy the learning time d students, and some students have been left behind due k, less effort in study. In addition, a demanding job may be a heavy burden on students, which will probably effect their physical and psychological health. To sum up, college students should think twice before taking a part-time job and try to deal with both working and studying well simultaneously. In this way, people will look at those college part-timers with more approval.
Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) Dad, Why Did You Do It? Every time the phone rings in my flat I jump, especially if it's near midnight. Deep down I know it's only Mum, ringing for a chat because, yet again, she can't sleep. But for a fraction of a second I freeze. It was midnight. when the call came that changed the way I felt about the person I loved most--my dad. I'd watch his friends playing around with young girls and then look at Dad. "Ridiculous, "he'd say, and I'd smile, knowing he could never behave that way. Last October, as if to prove the point, he whisked Mum away for a romantic weekend in Rome to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. She was so happy. I didn't think any couple could be closer and I always dreamed that when I got married it would be the same for me--secure and caring. Dad always wanted the best for me and he made sure I got it. Thanks to his Army career and pension we were financially better off than most. But he always pushed me to achieve things for myself and not be too dependent on him and Mum. I loved him for that, but when he packed me off to America for a year to "find myself" I didn't want to go. Hugging me at the airport, Dad wiped away my tears. "It'll be character building, Emma," he said, adding: "Anyway, if you. don't like it after a few months you can come back. But trust me Princess, you'll love it." He was right. I loved the States, and living there built up my confidence. Still, I missed Dad like mad. I remember sitting in a coffee bar in Chicago and hiding behind the menu as tears poured down my face. I was frightened, alone and I knew Dad wasn't there to put his arms around me and reassure me. I rushed out to a phone booth to call him. As soon as I heard his sleepy voice I felt okay. Then, when I got home 12 months later, nothing much had changed…I thought. Mum was as madly in love with Dad as she'd been since the day he'd first kissed her in the school playground; and Dad seemed to feel the same--on the outside. Except he'd finally left the Army and was now an area manager for a car manufacturer. Mum was over the moon--it meant he no longer had to travel all over the country and spend months away from home. Dad was excited about his new job, and when he started working late neither Mum nor I thought anything of it. He told us it was a new project, and so confidential he wasn't allowed to tell us much about it. I believed he was at work, tucked away in his office--until I got that unforgettable midnight call. The woman s voice was hesitant but panicky. She asked if I was George s daughter. I didn't realize who she was until she told me Dad was with her--at midnight. She said she hadn't wanted to ring, that she'd never wanted me to find out about her, but she had no choice. Someone had to know that Dad was on his way to hospital. "He's had a heart attack," she said, her voice trembling. As I paced up and down the hospital corridor, this strange woman explained that she'd been with my father when he' d collapsed. The thought of them together made me feel ill. While I rushed to the toilet to splash water on my face, I heard a cry. It was her. As soon as I saw the doctor taking off his mask and laying a hand on her shoulder, I knew Dad had gone. I couldn't make myself go and look at him. I would've seen a stranger lying there. The man who for 24 years had told me never to lie, to be true to myself and always to treasure family values above all else, had slipped away from my lift for ever. Only then did I discover this woman worked for the company. She was Dad's so-called" confidential project". An hour or so later I broke the news to Mum. I said Dad had suffered a heart attack while he was at his friend Roy's house; that has made me feel even more guilty, because I've had to draw Roy into it all. I told Mum that Dad had been going over the new project with Roy and had collapsed. Nothing could be done. I even remember saying he'd been working much too hard lately. The last image I have of my Dad was as he'd waved good-bye that night. He'd ruffled my hair and told me he loved me. Then he went to see her. If Mum ever found out that he' d been deceiving her and had died in someone else's arms, it would kill her. So I've tried to make sure that never happens. Sometimes I wonder how I'm strong enough to keep this secret Dad has burdened me With. But I must--for Mum's sake. In the last six months I seem to have lost all sense of what is right and wrong. Worst of all, I've lost the person who meant so much to me. In my eyes, my Dad died once when I heard her voice on the phone. And he died again when his heart stopped beating. The pain of knowing I lost him twice makes it doubly hard to bear.
1. Emma was afraid to answer her mother's phone call at midnight.
N

W: Well, it looks like you are watching television, but we have a linear algebra mid-term tomorrow, so I thought you'd be studying for it and maybe I can study with you. M: Oh, well, I am just taking a break. This linear algebra stuff gives me a headache if I work on it too long. W: I know what you mean. I've been working on it for three hours already. I'm beginning to go cross. I'd been thinking at the sample problems. I just don't get some of them. M: But I can't believe you are coming to me. I mean you do know what I got on the last test, don't you? W: Yeah, I know. You told me. I just thought two heads might be better than one. M: Yeah, that's a nice idea. But... you know, I wish I knew that person in our class who got a hundred on the last test. She didn't miss a question. Umm... was it Elizabeth? W: Oh, yeah, Elizabeth! She is a friend of mine. She'd be a big help right now. Why don't I give her a call? M: What! At this hour? It' s already ten thirty. I don't wanna impose on her. W: Yeah, I guess you are right. But you know what? She owes me a big favor. Let's at least give her a call and see what she says. Maybe going over some of the problems with us would help her review the material. M: It's worth a try.

W: Don't worry. Let's try. People nowadays are faced with a work- related problem. M: So you mean workplace friendships are like a double- edged sword. W: That's true, although the benefits of a friendly workplace can be really positive. M: What is the other side of the coin? W: Well, organizations should be aware of the potential difficulties and how to manage friendships at work. M: I take for granted the leaders of the organizations would be so happy to see such friendly working atmospheres. W: According to the study and data, many people were concerned about going "softer" with their friends and being expected to treat them with special privileges. M: Yes, I understand in this way people naturally want to make their friends feel special. W: Actually, this conflicts with organizational practices or norms of fairness and equality. Then tension would be created in the relationship. M: Oh, it sounds like a dilemma. Workplace friendship is favored by people; however, new problems come into being. W: Absolutely, it is really difficult for the organizations to try to provide friendly environments and encourage workplace friendships, and at the same time they should have policies in place to manage potential difficulties. M: I see. Your analysis is logical. Thank you for helping me. W: You are welcome.

[解析] Hollywood is increasingly looking outside America's borders for stars and profit. Jonathan Taplin is a professor at the USC Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California. (32) He says that today, about 54 percent of the ticket sales for Hollywood studios now come from outside the United States. For the last three months of 2007, foreign sales totaled about 880 million dollars. But there is fierce competition for each movie dollar. (33) Hollywood has lost market share in some places as other countries develop their own film industries. For example, in the mid 1980s, American films had 80 percent of the market in South Korea. Today that share is about 40 percent. Hollywood also faces competition from illegally copied movies, a major issue to the Motion Picture Association of America. The trade group estimated more than 18 billion dollars in worldwide losses from piracy in 2005. Hollywood reporter Alan Silverman says piracy has influenced how American movies arc released. In the past, Hollywood studios waited months after the American release of a film to release it in foreign markets. (34) Now, many aim to release films at the same time around the world. Foreign markets may also influence how people get their movies. Different nations have different levels of technology. Efforts to settle on the next-generation DVD got a lot of attention recently. Sony's Blu-ray technology for high-definition televisions won the competition with Toshiba's HD DVD format. (35) Yet DVD sales have dropped in recent years. This may be a sign that people are increasingly getting their movies off the Internet. The Internet is another front in Hollywood's war on piracy. But more than that, it presents complex business questions for an industry now built mostly on DVD and ticket sales.

She began to tell the doctor on duty the story which was astonishing in all respects. She had been driving along a country road when she bad been stopped by a flying saucer landing in front of her. She had been forced to leave the car and entered the flying saucer by creatures which looked like human beings and which had easily made themselves understood although they couldn't speak. It was as though they could read her thoughts and she could read theirs. They treated her politely and allowed her to leave after carrying out a number of tests on her. As she otherwise seems to be normal, the doctor decided that she was probably suffering from the side effects of some drug. The woman insisted on being allowed to go home, but when she gave her address it was a town over a thousand miles from hospital, the police then started to make inquiries and soon discovered that there was already a search going on for the woman, whose husband had reported her missing. Section B
Passage One When they marry, husbands and wives have well-developed health histories and well-established congenital(天生的) and developmental propensities(嗜好) toward good and ill health. Substantial research suggests that, given the existing health propensity and health condition of an individual at a particular time, his or her probability of better or worse future health is affected by a variety of socially mediated factors that are subject to influence or manipulation by his or her spouse. Spouses can promote each others health by ameliorating(改善)psychological stress. A substantial literature develops strong evidence that psychological stress causes illness, increases, and serves as an important mechanism that links socioeconomic characteristics to health and mortality. Stress-reducing mechanisms include removal of sources of stress, and management of stress by talking about it to a trusted other person, psychiatric treatment, physical exercise, recreation and other means. A spouse can provide or encourage all of these stress-reducing behaviors. Spouses also can promote each others health by providing each other with supportive social contact, and they can facilitate or inhibit each others social contact with supportive others. Evidence suggests that health is greatly advanced by supportive social contacts, including positive interaction with relatives, friends, coworkers and acquaintances. Recent experimental data shows that persons with more diverse social networks are more resistant to experimentally introduced upper respiratory viruses than persons with less diverse social networks. Spouses can also promote each others health by providing each other with money income, and they can help each other manage money income effectively. Money does not buy health directly, but it can be goods and services that make good health more likely. These goods and services include nutritious food, a hygienic and safe environment, medical care, and amenities that reduce psychological stress. Unless estranged(使疏远)or unusually wealthy, husbands and wives almost always share their financial resources and purchases and consume many of these health-promoting goods and services jointly. In short, there are many ways in which spouses can influence each others probability of good health.

5. Which of the following is likely to make spouses in ill health?
Passage Two Scientists have devised a way to determine roughly where a person has lived using a strand (缕) of hair, a technique that could help track the movements of criminal suspects or unidentified murder victims. The method relies on measuring how chemical variations in drinking water show up in people's hair. "You're what you eat and drink, and that's recorded in your hair," said Tilure Cerling, a geologist at the University of Utah. While U. S. diet is relatively identical, water supplies vary. The differences result from weather patterns. The chemical composition of rainfall changes slightly as rain clouds move. Most hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water are stable, but traces of both elements are also present as heavier isotopes (同位素). The heaviest rain falls first. As a result, storms that form over the Pacific deliver heavier water to California than to Utah. Similar patterns exist throughout the U. S. By measuring the proportion of heavier hydrogen and oxygen isotopes along a strand of hair, scientists can construct a geographic timeline. Each inch of hair corresponds to about two months. Cerling's team collected tap water samples from 600 cities and constructed a map of the regional differences. They checked the accuracy of the map by testing 200 hair samples collected from 55 barber shops. They were able to accurately place the hair samples in broad regions roughly corresponding to the movement of rain systems. "It's not good for pinpointing (精确定位) ," Cerling said. "it's good for eliminating many possibilities. " Todd Park, a local detective, said the method has helped him learn more about an unidentified woman whose skeleton was found near Great Salt Lake.
