A new law took effect in Honolulu that made it illegal to look at mobile phones or other digital devices while crossing the street. Given the dangers that might arise, should there be a ban on pedestrians using their phones while crossing the road?
Mobile phone usage while crossing the road distracts a person, which increasingly makes them more susceptible to being injured or killed. However, most of the people are just too unaware of how grave it is because there are no official figures.
Police, paramedics (医务人员) and pedestrian groups believe texting or using mobile devices while walking can be almost as dangerous as using a phone while driving.
According to Harold Scruby, chairman of Pedestrian Council of Australia, the spot tests he conducted in the city revealed that at least 1 in 10 pedestrians were using a mobile device while crossing the road.
Paramedic David Morris said that emergency workers are observing a rise in these types of incidents. He recently treated a young man who walked into the path of a car, as he was texting and not looking where he was going. He suffered from limb injuries.
"These smartphones are a very beneficial tool but at the same time a very dangerous tool." Police traffic services commander Superintendent John Hartley claimed that getting the data is difficult, as most of the time people do not admit that they were using their phones at the time. "We should be aware of the situation around us and if we don't need to be texting while walking, particularly while crossing the road, then don't do it," Hartley added.
[范文] Using Phones While Crossing the Road Should Be Banned
Nowadays, a large number of people are so obsessed with their smart phones that they almost carry and use them everywhere, including on the streets. However, there are increasingly more incidents caused by those people. Given this, more and more places are bringing a law to make it illegal to use phones while crossing the street. In my opinion, this is really a good move for everyone. Listed below are the reasons.
For one thing, by doing so, people's lives can be better protected. Without a doubt, smart phones bring many benefits to us, but it is also undeniable that they make people more susceptible to being injured or killed. It is irresponsible for people to put themselves and other people in danger by indulging in their smart phones.
For another, excessive smart phone usage could impact people's health. Constantly bending the head to check the phone can cause cervical vertebra disease or other diseases. Meanwhile, playing the phones for long hours is bad for the eyesight.
In conclusion, people should be aware of the surroundings while crossing the road to avoid fatal accidents for the good of everyone. It is a good idea to ban people from using smart phones while crossing the street.

Academic Dishonesty on Campus
It is shown in the recent surveys that many college students copy papers from the Internet to save the trouble of doing their homework. In my opinion, this kind of academic dishonesty is very harmful to these students.
First, copying papers from the Internet makes students lazy. Copying papers from the Internet seems easy and can save some time and trouble, therefore, students will do this more and more often and seldom work hard to complete their papers on their own. In other word, students will become lazier and lazier. Second, students can learn little from copying others' work. Students cannot improve their abilities just by downloading papers from the Internet without their own thinking and working. What's worse, once students get used to academic cheating, they may also cheat in other cases in the future, which will be very dangerous for them.
To prevent academic dishonesty on campus, some punishment by the school may be necessary. But the most important thing is that teachers should talk to those students, and make them aware of the fact that copying others' work cannot bring them any knowledge and that only by working hard can they improve themselves.

[范文] On Exam-oriented Education
In the picture, a sprout is growing up, but is blocked by a huge rock, which serves as a symbol of "exam-oriented education". This picture intends to criticize the harm that exam-oriented education is doing to young students.
In my opinion, exam-oriented education hinders students' development by killing their creativity and curiosity for knowledge. First, under the backdrop of exam-oriented education, a good many teachers would ask students to recite the answers to the exam questions. As a result, students' creativity is substituted by rote learning. Second, as a major portion of schooling time is devoted to exams, students often experience high levels of stress and anxiety, as well as intense frustration. Bit by bit, they would consider learning extremely boring and torturing. Trapped in the desert of exams, students are no longer curious about the wonderland of knowledge, but rather fed up with it.
In conclusion, exam-oriented education swallows up students' creativity and curiosity by endless rote memorization of answers, which should be reformed as soon as possible.

Teachers have the capability of explaining points in a deeper way and provide not only theoretical knowledge but also practical experience about life. In the conventional teaching and learning mode, teachers and students co-exist in an environment where they can have timely interaction. This means teachers can have a more comprehensive and direct understanding of their students' strong points and shortcomings, which guarantees that students can learn more from the courses tailored to their needs. Teachers not only function as initiators who impart knowledge but also serve as supervisors or guardians. This is especially true in the case where students are less self-disciplined and inclined to go astray without the supervision and guidance from teachers. | With the advent of the Internet and other telecommunication technologies, there is a vastly growing wealth of resources available from an immense range of media outlets. The Intemet and TV are also easily accessible platforms for students in remote areas where teaching resources are not as abundant as those in more developed regions. Conducting research is an active process, which allows youngsters to focus on the smallest details rather than passively listen to a lecture in a large classroom, not to mention the extensiveness of learning methods attainable. |
[范文] Do Students Learn More from Classes than from Other Sources?
In the information age, the traditional student-teacher relationship has been affected deeply and people begin to doubt whether students can learn more from classes than from other sources. According to the conventional view, teachers are still the primary source from which students obtain knowledge, because of the professional knowledge taught in school, the timely interaction in class, and the supervision from teachers. On the contrary, nowadays many people believe that students can learn more from other sources since they have a variety of ways to acquire knowledge.
For me, I am in favor of the first viewpoint. Teachers play an irreplaceable role in education whether in the past or at present, since they not only impart knowledge, but also nurture people. For one thing, what students learn from class is more precise than what they learn from other sources, which provide an enormous amount of data needed to be sifted through to determine which is accurate. For another, teachers in schools put the shaping of personality which is hard for students to learn from other sources, in a place just as important as the imparting of knowledge.
In conclusion, the development of cutting-edge technology has a big impact on modem education. However, it can never eliminate the need for high-quality professionals in classrooms.

[范文] Should Universities Give Priority to Practical Courses for Students?
Because of the demands in the job market, students with "hot" degrees such as computer science or finance are more likely to get a job than students with a "cold" degree like geography. Some people say that universities should give priority to practical courses for students. But I think that traditional courses are equally important and universities should not give priority to practical courses.
First, both practical and traditional courses are needed in our country. Students who do well in different courses can help to develop different aspects of our country after their graduation. For example, our society needs not only people who can help to develop economy and technology, but also people who can contribute themselves to literature and education. Second, if universities give priority to practical courses, more students will choose those "hot" degrees. When these students graduate, they will have to fight harder for a job because there will be too many applicants with the same degrees. This will in turn cause an imbalance of supply and demand in the job market.
In one word, both practical courses and traditional courses are important, and universities should not give priority to either side.
