PART FIVE
Chief Executive's Report
Bennetts has remained the region's leading catalogue retailer in last twelve months. The company had distributed around five million catalogues, a figure which is unchanged from the previous year, and we now have 98 stores, an increase of twelve. As was widely reported in the media, merger negotiations with another catalogue retailer ended without mutual agreement. It is true that this has been a difficult year, with a fall in trading profits, largely resulting from weaker consumer spending, but not helped by disappointing productivity levels in the stores. It is also a cause of worry that production costs are continuing to rise. However, changes in the way we deliver to stores have led to considerable savings. With the aim of improving customer service and shopping convenience, we have introduced a number of new services in the last twelve months. Shopping by internet was added to the existing telephone ordering facility, and the initial response to this has been good. In stores, there are now information screens for customers to check the availability of goods they want to purchase. Together with other existing systems, it will reduce queues and tell store customers when their orders are ready for collection. Thus far, this is giving positive results. Another change has been the placement of the traditional and modern catalogues with in a single catalogue. As a result, customers who used the Modern catalogue now have over 30% more products to choose from, despite us dropping the less popular lines. Annual printing costs already show the benefit of this move, and sales are expected to start growing within the next year. We have to change our plans for the coming year. It is clear that shoppers expect staff on stores to be both friendly and efficient. A major programme to raise standards will be introduced at once, while the planned improvements to store facilities will be delayed for twelve months. The proposed interactive TV shopping service will not receive the go ahead, and neither will the planned redevelopment of the corporate headquarters. Bennetts is changing fast, and we are confident that the newly appointed members of the management team will help us to improve sales within the next twelve months, even if there is no recovery in the economic climate. Our aim is to spend this time making sure that the company is as efficient as possible, and to delay our strategy of considering mergers and takeovers.

Name of company: Office Online Type of company: retail, specialising in 1 equipment Additional services include: 2 Location: next to 3 Reason for sale: 4 Recent addition: a new 5 How to approach seller: by 6 Final date for offers: 7
[听力原文] Woman: So, the last company I'd like to present is called Office Online. It came onto the market at the end of last month, and there's been a lot of interest so far. Although Office Online originally sold office equipment such as furniture, today it mainly deals in computer equipment. This was to respond to changes in the market but it's not been totally successful. In terms of extra services offered, Office Online does web design. There were plans to offer IT training, but there wasn't enough demand. Next its surroundings, it's an area where there are a lot of cafes and restaurants which are popular with local business people. Office Online is situated beside a bank, so it's in a very good location for attracting customers. So far we've been unable to get exact figures regarding rental costs for the property, but those should be available from the owner. The owner has reached retirement age, but in fact the real reason for sale of the business is poor turnover; the company's sales have recently decreased to just eighty thousand a year, although it does have a potential for sales of well over two hundred thousand a year. This means that there hasn't been a lot of investment in the shop for a while; although one recent improvement has been a new security system. If there are any potential buyers here interested in finding out more, rather than phoning directly, the seller would prefer to be contacted by email so please make sure you do that. The final date for submitting offers for the business is not the twenty-fifth of June, as it says on the slide, but the twenty-fourth. So, that's all I have to say about Office Online. OK. Are there any questions? Yes...

B.It is in beautiful surroundings.
C.It is hidden away.

C
[听力原文] Woman: Hello, Mr Michael, thanks for talking to me today. Man: Not at all. Woman: Your company is located in such wonderful countryside. I expect your clients like coming here, don't they? Or do they find it difficult to get here? Man: Actually, the transport links aren't too bad, but we very rarely see our customers in person. What they do like about it is that it's a pretty secret location and rather difficult to find. Our work is very confidential. Woman: Ah yes. Your designs are beginning to make the designs of some of your competitors look rather old-fashioned. How do your designers work on their ideas? Is it all about technology? Man: Technology is the biggest part. We certainly have no use for pencils and drawing boards like the old-style design studios. Our designers use the latest computer-aided design system. Ideas can be tested from all angles just by using the computer screen. However, we haven't stopped building models completely-we just put the design into a solid form using clay or foam at a later stage of the process. Woman: Ah-ha. I know you have several important projects at the moment. Who is your biggest client? Man: All our work's important to us. We're best known for designing bikes and motorbikes, but the company that keeps us busiest these days is a car producer. However, there are also hundreds of different household items that we've designed in the past. Woman: Do you only use your own designers or do you ever look for new ideas, for example by using well-known artists on a freelance basis? Man: We certainly do look for ideas outside the company, but not from freelancers—our work's too secret for that. It's a very competitive market. We're even competing with the in-house R&D teams of our client companies! However, just now, we're working with scientists at a university to develop an even better system for designing products through the latest computer and video systems. Woman: What do you think it is that your customers value most about you? Is it just the fact that you use the latest technology? Man: Well, not that alone. Good-quality design can be made by any number of different methods, not just ours. What our customers particularly like is that with the technology, we can work faster than our competitors. Design has traditionally been a very slow process-but not here. That doesn't mean we're cheap, it just means we can get the design to the client before anyone else can. Woman: You're becoming well known for your designs, now, aren't you? Didn't one of your racing bikes recently win an award in a competition? Man: Well, what actually happened was, it was judged by over fifty international biking magazines to be the best design, which meant that they all used it on their front covers, which was fantastic publicity for us, and hopefully the bike will go on to win lots of races. Woman: It must be sad when designs are rejected. However successful a design company is, is it true that most designs never actually go into production? Man: Usually, but not with us. Almost all our designs are put into production as soon as the company receives them. Our customers want designs not just to look at and think about for some later date, but to use immediately. Very few are rejected. Woman: How do your customers pay you? Man: Many design companies demand from their clients a share in the profits from sales of products made to their designs. That can be very costly to the client. Our customers pay us on a straight fee basis: one project, one fee. If it takes many more hours to produce than we had expected, that's our problem, but the client gets the project on time. Woman: Well, you've certainly got a successful operation going...
