A study by Harvard researchers found that mind wandering, or daydreaming, consumes an average of 47% of peoples' waking hours. This begs the question: If mind wandering is so costly to our well-being, then why in the world are we so willing to spend nearly half of our lives in this mental state? Creative thinkers know, despite what their parents, teachers and school leaders might have told them, that daydreaming is hardly a waste of time. But unfortunately, many students learn to suppress (压制) their natural instincts to dream and imagine—instead, they're taught to fit into a standardized model and to learn by the book, in a way that may not feel natural and that very well may suppress their natural desire to create. But as two famous psychologists recently noted, "Not all minds who wander are lost" —in fact, the mind's wandering is vital to imagination and creative thought. Nearly 50years ago, psychologist Jerome L.Singer established that daydreaming is a normal and indeed widespread aspect of human experience. He found that many people are "happy daydreamers" who enjoy their inner imagery and fantasy (幻想). According to Singer, these daydreamers "simply value and enjoy their private experiences, are willing to risk wasting a certain amount of time on them, but also can apparently use them for effective planning and for self-amusement during periods of routine task activity or boredom." Singer coined the term positive-constructive daydreaming to describe this type of mind wandering, which he distinguished from poor attention and anxious, obsessive (萦绕于心的) fantasies. By making these important distinctions, Singer was able to highlight the positive, adaptive role that daydreaming can play in our daily lives, under the right circumstances.

In a determined attempt to deal with litter (垃圾), Ireland passed a plastic bag tax in 2002—about 33 cents—at the register if you want one with your purchases. There was an advertising awareness campaign. Within weeks, there was a 94% drop in plastic bag use. Within a year, nearly everyone bought reusable cloth bags, which they now keep in the office and in the back of their cars. Plastic bags became socially unacceptable—along with wearing a fur coat or not cleaning up after your dog. Because plastic bags are light and compressible (可压缩的), they constitute only 2% of landfill, but since most are not biodegradable (可生物降解的), they will be there for decades. Attempts at taxing plastic bags have failed in many places because of opposition from manufacturers and merchants, who felt it would be bad for business. In Britain as well as Los Angeles and San Francisco, proposed taxes failed to gain political approval, although San Francisco passed a ban last year. Countries like Italy have settled for voluntary participation. But there were no plastic bag makers in Ireland and a forceful environment minister gave reluctant shopkeepers little room: It is illegal for shopkeepers to pay for the bags on behalf of their customers. More to the point, the environment minister told shopkeepers that if they merely changed from plastic to paper, he would tax those bags too. While paper bags are in some ways better for the environment in terms of litter, studies suggest their manufacture causes more CO2 emissions than making plastic bags.
9. According to the passage, what has caused the drop in plastic bag use? ______
A.Plastic bag tax.
B.Heavy fine for violators.
C.Fall in purchasing power.
D.Advertising awareness movement.

Sand is in high demand. In some parts of the world, people are going to increasingly great lengths to get their hands on the golden grains. Even though fully accounting for illegally mined sand is not possible, sand is easily the most mined material in the world. According to the UN Environment Programme, sand accounts for up to 85% of everything mined globally each year. Modern cities are built with, and often on, sand. Sand also has industrial uses: it is used to make glass, electronics, and to help extract (提取) oil. And vast quantities of sand tend to be thrown into the sea to reclaim land (填海造地). The UN predicts that, by 2030, there will be over 40 megacities home to more than 10 million people, which means more houses will need to be built. But why is there a shortage, when sand seems so abundant? Desert sand is very smooth, and so cannot be used for most commercial purposes. In any case, the distance of sand to construction sites is generally important too: because sand is relatively cheap,it tends to be uneconomical to transport across long distances. Unless there are the rich involved: Singapore and Qatar are big importers Australian sand was transported to a faraway desert to build Dubai's Burj Khalifa tower. Most countries also have rules in place about where and how much sand can be mined. Fortunately, there are substitutes for sand: houses can be built with straw and wood, and mud can be used for reclamation. In rich countries, government policy will encourage a shift towards such substitutes. According to Britain's Mineral Products Association, for example, nearly a third of all housing material used in Britain in 2014 was recycled. Singapore is planning to rely on Dutch expertise for its next reclamation project, which relies on a system of dykes (堤坝) and is less dependent on sand. In poorer countries, too, builders are likely to shift away from sand as its price rises. But, unless law enforcement improves, that will be a very slow process.
13. Why does sand become "the golden grains"? ______

B.Because it is easily mined.
C.Because it is in great demand.
D.Because it draws global attention.

16. What is the main idea of the last paragraph? ______
How to get a more fruitful day? Here are some tips: Limit your work-starting routine to 15 minutes Don't spend more than 15 minutes getting coffee, settling in, reading newspapers or emails. You are often at your freshest and most productive at the beginning of the day. A prolonged morning routine slows you down and makes your afternoon more stressful. Better to jump into the important work quickly and read the non-essential emails later on. Write two to-do lists The first should contain everything you need to get done soon. It should be a comprehensive list of short, medium and long-term projects and work, and you should constantly adjust it. The second to-do list should be what you can reasonably expect to get done today. Make the tasks as specific as possible and assign the amount of time you plan to devote to it. Print the list out on brightly colored paper; this keeps it from getting lost on your desk. Take a few moments to assess the day's emotional challenges Almost as important as your to-do list is a 'be-prepared-for' list. Make a summary of tough phone calls, boring meetings, challenging customers and other mental challenges you are likely to face. Then accept that they are inevitable and prepare yourself to get through them without anger, frustration or impatience. Remember: it's usually not work that gets us down, but rather the challenges that lie on the edge of jobs. Schedule some social time for mid-morning You probably work with people whom you like and know well. In fact, camaraderie (同事间的关爱) is what makes many jobs great. So build a ritual (礼仪) into each morning in which you spend a few moments of social time with colleagues. Make it short, at appropriate time, and don't let the day go by without it. But avoid personal phone calls if you can; they can unexpectedly turn into big time-eaters.

18. How does the first to-do list differ from the second to-do list? ______
