The Importance of On-campus Activities On-campus activities are a very important part of one's school life. Various on-campus activities can help to improve one's health, knowledge and social skills. First, on-campus activities can help you enhance your muscles, shape your build and learn some very useful sports skills since a considerable portion of on-campus activities is sports-related. Besides, there are also a lot of academic activities on campus one can choose from, such as lectures, debates and forums, where you may contact the elites from intellectual community and be baptized with thought-provoking ideas, and even get yourself involved. Another significant aspect of on-campus activities is that young people can practice their social skills throughout these activities. They learn things faster when they communicate with strangers, making friends in a society or running organizations and activities all by themselves. On-campus activities are so important that young students really can't do without them physically, academically, socially and intellectually. Therefore they should be encouraged to participate in these activities as long as they don't disturb their study.

[解析] Fights Between Males or Between Females Fights involving males are often less extreme than fights involving females. Usually, girls try to totally dishonor or embarrass their adversaries. Then they try to let their opponent remember for life that she had a fight with so and so. Some assert, "I would rather deal with ten male fights than anything that has to do with females." So why are male fights easier to handle? Perhaps, because of the "male dance", a somewhat predictable routine of posturing and talking. It seems that most males know that if they fight, there is a probability for some injury. The "male dance" is a way to avoid fighting while still saving face. Most of the fights that you see between males involve a lot of dancing around because they are really looking for someone to intervene. By dancing around and provoking the opponent, young men can maximize the chances that an adult will intervene and thus prevent the fight.

Questions 20 and 21 are based on the following news. At the end of the news item, you will be given 20 seconds to answer the questions. Now, listen to the news.
[解析] 20-21 Our correspondent reported that the United States will consider Iraq's destruction of the A1 Samoud, a liquid propellant "mini-Scud" ballistic missile, a test of Baghdad's commitment to disarm. Destroying the Al Samouds would rob Iraq of a potentially valuable weapon which it considers legitimate for its defense at a time when it faces tens of thousands of American troops poised for a possible invasion. Other outstanding disarmament issues include allowing inspectors to interview Iraqi scientists without government "minders" present. Inspectors from the U. N. Monitoring and Observation Commission led by Blix, have conducted only three private interviews with Iraqi scientists since their return to Iraq in November. "It's three out of more than 20 attempts," he said. The International Atomic Energy Agency, which is inspecting Iraq's nuclear program, has conducted four private interviews, including one Monday.

D.overseas economic uncertainty.

[解析] 22-23 Japan's central bank kept its bleak view of the economy unchanged for the fourth straight month in a report Monday that said growth was hampered by weak domestic consumption and shaky exports. Feeble recovery in the U. S. and European economies plagued by tensions in the Middle East, limited Japan's hopes for an export-led recovery. One bright spot was employment, with the number of new job offers showing a rising trend, the report said. But that was outweighed by an ongoing decline in wages. Japan has been battling a slowdown for more than a decade, and Monday's report noted with concern the weakness of Japanese stock prices. Tokyo stocks have been hovering around 19-year lows.
Feeble recovery in the U. S. and European economies plagued by tensions in the Middle East, limited Japan's hopes for an export-led recovery。

S. plans to send in reinforcements and build a naval blockade to prepare for a preemptive (先发制人的;有先买权的) attack. North Korea "will be left with no option but to take a decisive step to abandon its commitment to implement the Armistice Agreement," quoted by the North's state-run KCNA news agency. Armed forces of the two Koreas were in the middle of their annual winter training.

PART Ⅳ CLOZE Decide which of the choices given below would best complete the passage if inserted in the corresponding blanks. Mark the best choice for each blank on your answer sheet. Writing is not exactly a team sport. 1 a writer you spend most of your time chugging away by your lonesome, with only your words for 2 . But all the same, writing isn't a one way street: 3 we're not talking about diaries, all writing is meant to have an audience. You're not talking to yourself, you are having a 4 . Many writers are only 5 aware of their audience as they draft their stories. Some believe the reader doesn't come into play at all until the story is finished, or the article on the editor's desk. But since we write to be read, readers are an essential part of the writing 6 itself. Your audience is an implicit part of your writing, as much as plot and characters. Your implicit audience helps 7 your story; it sets your tone and defines your style; it determines in part your choice of protagonist; it is the "ear" to your "voice". If we know how to write and what to write about, 8 we also know who it is we're writing for? You are not writing fur your writers' circle, or your editor, or your mother-in-law who reads all your 9 drafts. No matter how important these people may be, they are not the "reader" I am talking about here, or 10 , they shouldn't be. Writers tend to become hopelessly blocked when they try to please specific readers. Especially when those readers are themselves writers. Or mothers-in-law. Knowing your 11 audience will help you avoid that particular trap. The simplest way to start getting a handle on your audience is to form a mental 12 of your ideal reader. What kind of person is he/she? Where does he live, what kind of job, what kind of hobbies does he have? What books does he read (and when, and how many)? Chances are, your ideal reader is a lot like you. We write 13 when we write for an audience with whom we can 14 . Sticking with that audience is more important than you think. Too-harsh criticism from fellow writers or editors can undermine your confidence to the point 15 you write just to suit their tastes. Uncritical admiration of relatives and friends can make you sloppy and lax.
[解析] 而作者认为其实读者是写作过程中的重要组成部分。单词process和course中文意思都是过程。根据定义和经常的用法和搭配,这里应该选process。而writing course足写作课。可以参照英语的原文定义解释: process: any continued set of natural actions connected with (the continuation, development, and change of) life or matter, over which man has little control. course: movement from one point to another, continuous movement in space or time; a set of lessons.
7.
A.make
B.invent
C.write
D.shape
A B C D
D
[解析] 根据上下文,这里用单词shape最佳,因为接下来作者就在进一步阐释该词的意义:it sets your tone and defines your style; it determines in part your choice of protagonist; it is the "ear" to your "voice".

TEXT A
Divorce
In arbitration, the divorce case is presented to a neutral party called an arbitrator who, like a judge, has the power to decide what should happen in the case. Arbitrators may be matrimonial lawyers or former judges, but in any case they should be familiar with the law. The arbitrator has power to compel decisions over the objection of one or both parties. The decisions may be either binding or nonbinding. If binding, parties are usually bound by the decision until you can prove the arbitrator was biased, made a gross error of law or exceeded the arbitrator's authority. A nonbinding decision may be appealed, but if the end result is the same as the first decision or more favorable to the other spouse, the spouse who appealed may be ordered to pay the other's costs. Many states now require you and your spouse to participate in mediation, arbitration or some other form of alternative dispute resolution before a judge will hear the divorce case. Usually you will have to pay for the services, but in some states the court will provide mediators at no cost. In any case, resolving your conflicts without going to court will cost you less money and be easier on your emotions. Here are some tips to consider when evaluating mediation and arbitration options: A mediator helps you and your spouse to reach an agreement but has no power to enforce it. An arbitrator acts like a hired judge but may or may not be a lawyer. An arbitrator may also enforce an agreement. If the court requires mediation, opposing it may anger the judge and prejudice your case. Mediated agreements may be harder to alter than court decisions. Whether you use mediation or arbitration, go into it prepared.
1. An arbitrator could be anyone of the following EXCEPT
A.a sitting judge.
B.a retired judge.
C.a matrimonial lawyer.
D.a former judge.
A B C D
A
[解析] 根据提问,文章中第一段说明只要熟悉法律的都能担任调解员。但是,没有说现任的法官能担任。参看最后提示里面的话:An arbitrator acts like a hired judge but may or may not be a lawyer,也表明法官不能担任。
2. In any divorce case, both parties may NOT follow the binding decision if
A.the arbitrator was biased.
B.the arbitrator asked them to pay for costs.
C.the arbitrator made a gross error of law.
D.the arbitrator exceeded his authority.
A B C D
B
[解析] 只要根据提问找到相关的段落和句子:If binding, parties are usually bound by the decision until you can prove the arbitrator was biased, made a gross error of law or exceeded the arbitrator's authority.
3. Which of the following is NOT the desired result of arbitration, according to the author?
A.Resolving your conflicts.
B.Not having to go to court.
C.Easing on your emotions.
D.Costing you less money.
A B C D
C
[解析] 问题问的是接受调解的好处。第二段中一句话In any case, resolving your conflicts without going to court will cost you less money and be easier on your emotions说得很清楚。句中be easier on your emotions意思是感情上好过些。Easy是形容词,而选项C中ease是动词: make... more comfortable/free sb.out of...。句型应该是ease sb.of sth一例:I eased him of the difficulty by telling him what to do.
TEXT B
The Role of Religion in Korean Higher Education
It is widely believed that religious traditions, such as Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Christianity, had great effects on the entirety of Korean culture and society. Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism were amalgamated into Korean culture and became, in the main, axes of Korean traditional religious thought, in addition to Korean folk beliefs and shamanism. From an educational point of view, Buddhism and Confucianism had a significant impact on formal and informal elite education in the early Korean states and still remains important. Taoism, on the other hand, has affected internal and external life as opposed to Korean education. Christianity, a newly grafted religion, has also exerted an important influence upon the development of modern higher education. Therefore, the parameters of the study are Buddhism, Confucianism, and Christianity. Throughout the history of Korean education, religion and education are inseparable. The examination of the role of religion in Korean higher education gives Western educators historically valuable ideas about religious components in Korean higher education. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the role of religion in Korean elite and higher education during the premodern and modern periods. In this study, "premodern era" is defined as the fourth century to the late nineteenth century, and "modern period" from 1880 to 1910. Numerous studies have shown that religious thought has affected the spiritual and practical worlds in premodern and contemporary Korea. However, several studies examining the influence of religious and philosophical thought on Korean education indicate that three religious traditions — Buddhism, Confucianism, and Christianity — had an enormous impact on premodern and modern education in Korea. In terms of Korean educational history and philosophy, there are few studies that examine the religious and philosophical ideas that historically affect Korean higher education. Kim briefly analyzes the basic philosophy and organization of Korean higher education, and Lee reviews religious and philosophical factors influencing the development of Korean higher education in terms of educational administrative theory and practice. Studies concerning the role of religion in premodern elite and modern higher education have yet to be conducted. For this reason, this study will focus on the contribution of Buddhism and Confucianism to premodern elite education in Korea, particularly the interaction between Confucianism and Christianity with modern higher education in Korea and on the role of religion in current Korean higher education.
1. ______ has been believed NOT to have much influence on the Korean higher education.
A.Buddhism
B.Confucianism
C.Taoism
D.Christianity
A B C D
C
[解析] 根据提问,第一段里作者就说明了Taoism, on the other hand, has affected internal and external life as opposed to Korean education。以及后来的几段里都没有提到道教对高等教育的影响。
2. Which of the following is NOT true, according to the passage?
A.Buddhism has influenced the Korean higher education for over one thousand years.
B.Confucianism is still playing an important role in the higher education in Korea.
C.Taoism, amalgamated into Korean culture, is an axe of its traditional religious thought.
D.Christianity is widely believed to have affected internal and external life.
B.has influenced the higher education only recently.
C.has been opposed to the practice of Confucianism.
D.is not compatible with Korean folk beliefs and shamanism.
A B C D
A
[解析] 根据提问,在第一段里有一句话:Christianity is a newly grafted religion。而选项B错了,因为在本文就是要focus on the contribution of Buddhism and Confucianism to premodern elite education in Korea。此句话证明基督教对韩国教育影响也是由来已久。文章没有就基督教和儒教作对立的比较,而是要去研究两者之间的互动性,particularly the interaction between Confucianism and Christianity with modern higher education in Korea。文章也没有提到基督教与韩国民间信仰和巫术有什么矛盾冲突。
4. This passage is
A.a study of Korean elite and higher education.
B.a comparison of four different religions in Korea.
C.an introduction to a study of religious influence in Korea.
D.a history of religious impact on Korean higher education.
The Internet is already the greatest equalizer of all time and can only become more so. While it may never match the ease of learning face-to-face it is now an excellent resource which is improving by leaps and bounds every day. The more you use it, the more you'll appreciate just what a powerful resource it is. Love it or hate it, our lives will be increasingly affected by it as international boundaries dissolve in the face of this high-tech equalizer. The Internet is a fantastic resource for language learning. It will soon be even better. Make the most of it now and use it more in the future. Right now you have a resource which is text. The Net allows you to read about any subject which interests you in whatever language you're learning. It's great for: Reading about how to learn — using resources to find out good ways to learn a language quickly. Source reading material — since you have a Net connection on your desk it costs nothing more to get an endless supply of written information about any subject which interests you. With over forty million URL's on the World Wide Web already and many more appearing every day, and with thousands of newsgroups you no longer need rely on your local bookshop to get over-priced books, newspapers or magazines to read. Finding pen pals — email makes it easy and fast to correspond with short letters on a daily basis. And it's free, so very frequent correspondence is finally practical and affordable, while finding someone to correspond with has finally become quite easy. In the future we expect: Voice communication will become more accessible as standard protocols emerge for person to person "telephone" calls. Right now both people need to have the same telephone software and a fast link to the Net if they want to talk to each other, so person to person discussion is a little difficult to organize. Emerging standards will soon solve this problem. Video tele-conferencing is a reality now, but will become much easier and of better quality as high speed ISDN and cable links become cheaper and more commonly available. Desktop cameras and microphones become cheaper and more likely to be available for widespread personal use.

However, many advantages the industrial society brings us also have a down side. One of the adverse effects of industrialization is acid deposition due to power plants, fossil fuels and automobile emissions. Acid rain is the popular term but the scientists prefer the term acid deposition. Acid rain can have adverse effects on the environment by damaging forests and lakes, making it too difficult for many plants and animals to live. Charles Angus Smith, an Englishman, was the first to suggest, in 1852, that sulfuric acid in Manchester, England, was causing metal to rust and dyed goods to fade. One source that causes acid rain is fossil fuel. This energy source contributes 23.1 million tons of sulfur dioxide and 20.5 million tons of nitrogen oxides to our atmosphere worldwide. When fossil fuels are ignited, such as oil and coal, they release carbon dioxide, a so-called greenhouse gas that traps heat within the earth's atmosphere, which causes global warming. Also, they release sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and metals such as mercury, aluminum into the atmosphere, which later can be carried a long distance from their source and be deposited as acid rain. Forests are a complex ecosystem that involves trees, soil, water, the air, climate and other living organisms that support the community of wildlife: animals, birds, insects and plants. The countries most affected by acid rain arc in Europe. Central Europe faces a much greater threat since it has a large amount of forest area and about 8% of German's forest face the lethal effect of acid rain. Acid rain kills about 50 million hectares of forest. Acid rain does not kill trees outright but weakens them to the point where they become susceptible to extremes of heat or cold, attacks from blight-causing or from inserts, and other environmental stresses. When acid rain falls into lakes and rivers, it destroys all living things and populations of fish, aquatic plant life and microorganisms decline. Fish just goes extinct because they simply fail to reproduce and become less and less abundant, until they die out. The result of acid rain is not only the destruction of forests and lakes, but also the corrosion of buildings and monuments. Almost every building of a major urban or industrial centre may be at risk from the corrosive effects of acid deposition and the rate of corrosion has increased dramatically in many urban areas. The Athenian monuments have got worst in the past 20~25 years as a result of pollution. Acid attack can also lead to stone decay through the creation of salt, which can crystallize and force apart mineral grains, causing the stone to disintegrate. As our society gets more advanced, there is also the rising effect of pollution. To stop the effect we need to find alternative ways to remove or replace fossil fuel that is responsible for acid rain. The government needs to put stricter laws on the industries that pollute. People should find an efficient and alternative way to stop the pollution, because the effects of acid rain can be seen all round ns, starting with forests and lakes, and in the heart of a city where the buildings and monuments are being eaten away by pollution.

1. Americans with disabilities are a widely diverse group of people with varying levels of independence and needs. The challenge for the future is to ensure that all people with disabilities become full participants in the criminal justice system. The National Council on Disability noted in its Achieving Independence report that the achievement of independence for people with disabilities is a test of the very tenets of our democracy. We are committed to giving to all crime victims: * The right to protection from intimidation and harm. * The right to counsel. * The right to reparations. * The right to preservation of property and employment. * The right to due process in criminal court proceedings. While the United States is viewed as the world leader in civil and disability rights, crime victims with disabilities are largely invisible and their legal rights for service and justice go unaddressed. The most important thing that Americans should do for people with disabilities in the future as proposed in this short passage is
A.to protect the legal rights and the services of crime victims.
B.to ensure the participation of the disabled in the justice system.
C.to achieve the independence for the people with disabilities.

Bridging the Generation Gap
America is getting older. In the span of a generation, the average age of U. S. citizens will increase from 32.9 years (1990) to 37.1 years (2020). Thus, it becomes increasingly important for this country's youth to develop a relationship with our elderly population. Jerrold Berkson, a teacher-counselor at Richard S. Sherman North Middle School in Great Neck, New York developed a program to achieve this goal. The program began in the late 1970's. Students were writing their autobiographies as part of an interdisciplinary section on immigration and assimilation. Berkson invited senior citizens into his school to assist the students. The seniors came from many ethnic and racial backgrounds and many of the seniors had emigrated to America in their youth. Through the presentations and discussions, the students learned about overcoming adversity and achieving happiness and fulfillment. What is the purpose of the program started by Jerrold Berkson?
A.To help the students to write their autobiographies.
B.To overcome adversity and achieve happiness and fulfillment.
C.To develop a relationship with our elderly and young population.
D.To start an interdisciplinary section on immigration and assimilation.

Gangs' "Protection"
Although from an objective point of view, we can see joining a gang brings more danger than it saves you from, this is not always the way it is seen by kids. In slums such as the Bronx or the very worst case, Compton, children will no doubt be beaten and robbed if they do not join a gang. Of course they can probably get the same treatment from rivals when in a gang. The gang also provides some money for these children who quite often need to feed their families. The reason kids think that the gang will keep them safe is from propaganda from the gangs. Gang members will say that no one will get hurt and make a public show of revenge if a member is hurt or killed. So, as you have seen gangs are a product of the environment we have created for ourselves. There are some factors that include oppression, the media, greed, violence and other gangs. There seems to be no way to end the problem of gangs without totally restructuring the modern economy and value system. Since the chance of this happening is minimal, we must learn to cope with gangs and try to keep their following to a minimum. Unfortunately there is no real organized force to help fight gangs. Of course the police are supposed to do this but this situation quite often deals with racial issues also and the police forces regularly display their increasing inability to deal fairly with these issues. What we need are more people to form organizations like the "Guardian Angels" a gang-like group that makes life very tough for street gangs that are breaking laws.
