Advantages or Disadvantages of Watching TV
Nowadays television has been an essential part of our lives. I can safely assert that in modern society, people can hardly go without television because it really benefits us a lot. Of course, watching TV too frequently also has its disadvantages. First, it is through television that we are well informed of the happenings at home and abroad. It's important for us to keep up with the tendency of international affairs. Besides the news, other TV programs and even advertisements are also informative. Second, television provides universal entertainment. Watching TV is a way of enriching our lives. In some way, it broadens our mind. It makes it possible for us to see different people in file world, and learn different things like different cultures and traditions. However, you have to restrain yourself from watching TV indulgently, which will inevitably harm your health. In a word, it is advisable to watch TV properly and not to be a TV addict. Please write the whole passage on ANSWER SHEET TWO.
Trojan home attacks pose one of the most serious threats to computer security. This passage will teach you how to avoid falling prey to them, and how to repair the damage if you already did. According to legend, the Greeks won the Trojan war by hiding in a huge, hollow wooden horse to sneak into the fortified city of Troy. In today's computer world, a Trojan horse is defined as a "malicious, security breaking program that is disguised as something benign" such as a movie or game. An example of a trojan horse was the infamous "Love Bug". If this apparent love letter was opened, it would cause a lot of problems, such as sending itself to everybody on your email address book or erasing or modifying your files, and downloading another Trojan horse program designed to steal your passwords so as to take over your computer and "remote control" it.

But their call fell short of a binding resolution that would pose difficulties for many Gulf states, which host thousands of US troops preparing for possible war on Iraq over its alleged weapons of mass destruction. Iraq denies it has such arms. Response Time Is Critical
You, yes you, are responsible for ensuring that you are an interesting, fun person to have 1 , for being a positive player in the game of life. No matter what your level of 2 to use a given language, you'll need to be fast. To be able to respond or begin speaking within the usual conversational pause of about half a second or break of 3 four seconds, you'll need to be able to say something, anything, within those time limits, or you just won't get a 4 . We had an interesting example of this in class which accurately 5 real life "on the street". One student, who'd never left Japan and who spoke English at only sixty to seventy words per minute, could generally begin speaking within a second or so 6 he wanted to. His start was strong, but not always meaningful; "Yes, well, yes. Well what I wanted to say..." 7 student had lived and worked in England, could easily speak at one to two hundred words per minute and preferred to be precise 8 he said, taking two to four seconds to prepare before he spoke. By the end of the class round-table debate, the second student said he was feeling frustrated and 9 that no one would listen to him and had only been heard for a few minutes 10 over the hour long debate. On the other hand, the first, slower talking, student had totaled over twenty minutes of speaking time and been the most lucid (=expressive) 11 in the group of six. The first speaker had a hearing because his 12 and initiation time was very fast, while the 13 failed, no matter how much he wanted to talk, because his response time was too slow, slower than any other student. A secondary factor was that when the second student 14 before speaking his first few words were much quieter than his normal speaking volume. The interactive talking possible in lessons gave the second student chances to reduce his response time so that later in the course he could make himself 15 quickly and loudly enough for people to be interested in hearing what he wanted to say.

TEXT A
E-commerce Is Here to Stay
Neither the absolute level of Internet sales nor the growth rate tells the whole story, but this year e-commerce became a mainstream retail channel. You don't have to look far to find reasons for pessimism, however: a sluggish economy, the aftershocks of Sept. 11, and the problems of particular Web retailers. And even if consumer e-tailers don't post big numbers during the holiday shopping season, Web retailers have done a lot of work behind the scenes to make the Internet a viable channel overall. Web commerce now has a more reasonable set of expectations. Many a dot-com company boasted that it would put traditional stores out of business. Remember Web grocers? Like many of their dot-com peers, those who went it alone folded or were consumed by traditional grocers. Now, the once independent Web grocers make up the online channel for retail supermarkets. Likewise, e-tailers seldom think of themselves any more as the entire sales channel--but that doesn't mean they are disappearing altogether. Instead, they now form one part of a larger selling strategy. Not only has the Web channel become mainstream, but also it has helped make a multichannel approach more effective. A customer can buy a sweater online, and then return it at the store. Or a customer can try that same sweater on in the store but buy it online. An online presence improves the shopping experience for consumers, while retailers benefit from the different points of interaction with potential customers. Finally, retail Web sites have done a better job at fulfillment, especially when dealing with tricky problems such as merchandise returns. Sites have also gotten better at delivering on promises. This year, you probably won't see as many people complaining that the toys they bought for Christmas haven't shown up or that orders were duplicated. Customer relationship management technology has helped sites manage customer concerns and improve relationships with customers. So don't fall for the head-shaking this season over online retail. Business-to-consumer e-commerce is more than just here to stay—it's here now.
1. The pessimistic view on the sluggish business on the whole is NOT due to

TEXT B
The Hurricane
"The Hurricane," with a running time of about two and one half hours is a powerful story about prejudice, racism and one man's will to survive. Lesra, played by Vicellous Reon Shannon, a troubled black teenager, has been taken care of by three white Canadians in Toronto. They are sincere about helping him live a good life and encourage him to read and write. Lesra finds a book about a boxer, is fascinated by the boxer's story and writes him a letter. Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, Denzell Washington, writes back to Lesra from his prison cell and they begin a correspondence that eventually leads to Carter's exoneration for the crime that he didn't commit. The movie, based on a true story, takes place in Patterson, New Jersey, exposing the depths of racism in all of our United States, not just the South. I think movies like this will help us, albeit ever so slowly, to move our society away from fear, irrationality and prejudice and towards building communities that are filled with compassion, empathy and justice for all! The beginning of this picture is a little confusing although there is some narrative, which always helps. The first few scenes are abrupt and! need to acquaint myself with the quick changes. There are a number of flashbacks that take place as Lesra begins to read the book. There are quite a few dates and places that appear as sub-titles at the beginning of scenes. At the end of the movie there is a written epilogue that is crucial for you to know. The first half of this film has many challenges including a scene when Hurricane is left in "the hole". What you hear is all the voices in his mind; his internal dialogue. The second half of the story is much easier to follow. By this time you are familiar with the characters and things start falling into a reasonable sequence. The movie ends with a long court scene that is easy to follow and totally inspiring. The theater broke out into spontaneous applause at the end.

Michelangelo's Masterpiece: David
In 1501, 25-year-old Michelangelo Buonarroti began working on his colossal masterpiece, the 17- foot-tall marble David. From a huge block of marble that had been abandoned decades earlier by another sculptor, Michelangelo took on the challenge of living up to Donatello and other precursors who had sculpted the same heroic figure. The David, portrayed in the Bible as a young shepherd who slew the giant Goliath and went on to become a valiant and just Hebrew king, was a fit symbol of courage and civic duty to guard the city of Florence. Michelangelo is a painter, sculptor, and architect. In this era, all three forms of art were thought to be based on disegno, an artistic discipline built on knowledge of the male human form. Sculpture is considered the finest art form because it mimics divine creation: The sculptural image is found within the block of stone much as the human soul is found within the physical body. The David is considered a masterpiece, an ideal male form combining heroic strength and human uncertainty. It was erected in 1504 in the public plaza of Florence, the Piazza della Signoria. In 1873, the original was moved to the Accademia delle Belle Arti, where it is better protected for posterity, and a copy of the work was erected in the plaza in 1882. In 1939, a copy of Michelangelo's masterpiece was installed at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, CA, with one addition: A fig leaf was added to cover the genitals and pubic hair of the statue. The leaf was removed in 1969, and the statue remained in its original state until toppled by an earthquake in 1987. In November 1969, a poster image of the statue was confiscated by a vice squad in Sydney, Australia, and the manager of the store was charged with obscenity. Daniel Thomas, curator of the New South Wales Art Museum, called the action "incredible, utterly ridiculous." The charges were ultimately dropped. Debates about the appropriateness of displaying reproductions or photographs of the David in such places as schools, dormitory rooms, and churches continue. Today, the image has become iconic in popular reproductions on T-shirts, refrigerator magnets, and in advertising.

D.didn't fail to produce another sculpture of the same figure.

[解析] 根据提问,查找原文有关段落Michelangelo took on the challenge of living up to Donatello and other precursors who had sculpted the same heroic figure。说明他迎接挑战而且不辱使命。词组live up to:不辜负。但是注意,原文没有明确比较他与前辈的作品好坏优劣。
2. What is the meaning of the word disegno, in Paragraph 2?
Ever since it was built, the Empire State Building has captured the attention of young and old alike: every year, millions of tourists flock to the Empire State Building to get a glimpse from its 86th and 102nd floor observatories; the image of the Empire State Building has appeared in hundreds of ads and movies, not to mention the countless toys, models, postcards, ashtrays, thimbles, etc. that bear the image. Yet, why does the Empire State Building appeal to so many? When the Empire State Building opened on May 1, 1931, it was the tallest building in the world—standing at 1,250 feet tall. This building not only became an icon of New York City, it became a symbol of twentieth century man's attempts to achieve the impossible. When the Eiffel Tower (984 feet) was built in 1889 in Paris it, in a way, taunted American architects to build something taller. By the early twentieth century, a skyscraper race was on. By 1909 the Metropolitan Life Tower rose 700 feet (50 stories), quickly followed by the Woolworth Building in 1913 at 792 feet (57 stories), and soon surpassed by the Bank of Manhattan Building in 1929 at 927 feet (71 stories). When John Jacob Raskob (previously a vice president of General Motors) decided to join in the skyscraper race, Walter Chrysler (founder of the Chrysler Corporation) was constructing a monumental building, the height of which he was keeping secret until the building's completion. Not knowing exactly what height he had to beat, Raskob started construction on his own building. In 1929, Raskob and his partners bought a parcel of property at 34th Street and Fifth Avenue for their new skyscraper. Raskob was able to purchase the site for approximately $16 million. After deciding on and obtaining a site for the skyscraper, Raskob needed a plan. Raskob hired Shreve, Lamb & Harmon to be the architects for his new building. The logic of the plan is very simple. A certain amount of space in the center, arranged as compactly as possible, contains the vertical circulation, mail chutes, toilets, shafts and corridors. Surrounding this is a perimeter of office space 28 feet deep. The race was getting very competitive. With the thought of wanting to make the Empire State Building higher, Raskob himself came up with the solution. After examining a scale model of the proposed building, Raskob said, "It needs a hat!" Looking toward the future, Raskob decided that the "hat" would be used as a docking station for dirigibles. The new design for the Empire State Building, including the dirigible mooring mast, would make the building 1,250 tall (the Chrysler Building was completed at 1,046 feet with 77 stories).

1. Hi Jack, If character animation is what you're into, I highly suggest you not overlook traditional drawing as a means of developing that art. I watched the animations on your site, and I can see some promising stuff there, but overall, I don't get a sense of life. Your keys seem very linear, especially in your 3-minute piece with the wizard; there are lots of frozen poses, and unmotivated pauses in the movement. The computer is full of tools to overcome those issues—one of which is the curve editor. I don't know what software you use, but any animation software these days will have a Function Curve editor, which is basically a graph of all your animation that you can edit. This is where you take your key frames and tell the computer how to draw the inbetweens. I do a lot of my overlapping action with just these curves, moving existing key frames around. On another note—that Photoshop composite with the skier is excellent! —MarcoWhich of the following does the author NOT suggest m Jack?
A.Learning some traditional drawing.
B.Using the Function Curve Editor.
C.Referring to three-minute animations.
D.Recommending the Photoshop composite.

1. One of the most important and comprehensive collections of Chinese export porcelain in America is on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Featuring more than 80 works drawn from the Museum's own collections, Chinese Export Porcelain at the Metropolitan Museum of Art examines the precious porcelain created in China for export to Europe and America. Dating from the mid-16th century through the third quarter of the 19th century, the exhibition includes bowls and vases, services and tureens, reverse glass paintings, and works in ivory. Together with the Metropolitan's winter 2003 Bulletin on the subject, the exhibition will spotlight this little-known facet of the Museum's collections. The exhibition and its accompanying publication are made possible by Mary and Marvin Davidson. Introduced to Europe in the 14th century, Chinese porcelains were regarded as objects of rarity and luxury. 1. One problem of eliciting knowledge from several experts is that experts may share only parts of their terminologies and conceptual systems. Experts may use the same term for different concepts, use different terms for the same concept, use the same term for the same concept, or use different terms and have different concepts. Moreover, clients who use an expert system have even less likelihood of sharing terms and concepts with the experts who produced it. This paper outlines a methodology for eliciting and recognizing such individual differences. It can be used to focus discussion between experts on those differences between them which require resolution, enabling them to classify them in terms of differing terminologies, levels of abstraction, disagreements, and so on. The methodology promotes th6 full exploration of the conceptual framework of a domain of expertise by encouraging experts to operate in a "brain-storming" mode as a group, using differing viewpoints to develop a rich framework. It reduces social pressures forcing an invalid consensus by providing objective analysis of separately elicited conceptual systems. What is the main purpose of the following passage?
A.To discuss different concepts.
B.To introduce a new methodology.
C.To talk about conceptual systems.
D.To introduce a research paper.

TEXT I Miro, A Just Man Miro was goodness, a just man in all things. He did not speak much but was very courteous. I never saw him with a camera or a ballpoint pen, but he would sometimes spend an hour contemplating the landscape. He and I were alone. I prudently kept my distance. He liked places that were difficult to get to, with a good view. Francesco Sole, Miro's chauffeur during 25 years. Interview at ABC, in Spain, 1983. Bernini on Women Asked in the presence of many French ladies who were the more beautiful, the French or the Italians, he replied that all were very beautiful, but with this difference: that there was blood under the skin with the Italians, while with Frenchwomen there was milk. Cultural Diversity in the Classrooms
The classrooms in America today are changing in some significant ways such as students come from a variety of racial, cultural, linguistic, and economic backgrounds. This increase in diversity among the student population is one of the greatest challenges facing teachers in the 90s. To adequately attend to cultural diversity in the classroom, teachers must look first at their own cultural background and understand how their biases affect their interactions with students. Then, teachers can examine the backgrounds and needs of the student population and understand their students' cultural biases as well. Classroom instruction can be designed to connect the content of a course with students' backgrounds. This article offers some instructional approaches for working with diverse student populations and related issues of diversity. Some common themes include: carefully balance academic content with instructional processes use visuals use group work involve parents build on what students already know use lecture outlines connect lessons with examples from the "real world" They represent a vital direction in helping teachers ensure the academic success of all students.
1. Which is NOT among the methods to be adopted for cultural diversity in the classroom?
