1. Write on ANSWER SHEET ONE a composition of about 150 words on the following topic: The Ideal Way to Go on with Our Academic Studies You are to write in three parts. In the first part, state what you believe to be the ideal way to study academically. In the second, supply one or two examples to support your view. In the last part, bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary. Marks will be rewarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriacy. Failure to following the instructions may result in a loss of marks.
The Ideal Way to Go on with Our Academic Studies
Academic studies can be very boring and tiresome if one does not approach them in the right way. Different people would offer very different ideas about the best way out. Anyhow, my ideal way is actually very simple: stick to a healthy attitude toward one's study. Then what is a healthy attitude? It's the way one handles one's study, which should be positive and flexible. The first thing one should always remember is that one has got the say in one's own study. Never let the study overwhelm oneself. If one feels overloaded with studies, one should pick out the most urgent ones only. It would be no use hurrying when one really could do no more. It is preferable to remember that one should enjoy one's study, instead of suffering from it. In a word, the ideal state of academic studies is enjoying the experience. 1 believe that the right approach to one's academic studies will bring success in the long run. Enjoy one's studies while one can, and one can succeed in the end.

Rice is very much under appreciated in the United States. With the exception of Asian cooking, rice is usually a side dish or combined with other ingredients. Rice is a very nutritious, low cost and easy-to prepare food. There are different types of rice available and the cooking time varies by type of rice. Follow the package instructions for the amount of liquid necessary and the cooking times. Both vary for each type of rice. Regular white rice has been milled to remove the hull comes in long, medium and short grains. Long grained rice is the best for all-purpose use. Brown rice has a pleasant nutty flavor and a firmer texture. While white rice cooks in about 15 minutes, brown rice takes 45 to 50 minutes to cook. PART Ⅳ CLOZE Decide which of the choices given below would best complete the passage if inserted in the corresponding blanks. Mark the best choice for each blank on your answer sheet. Primary school teachers' poor 1 of English and maths is undermining the Government's literacy and numeracy strategies, an official evaluation has concluded. 2 in teachers' knowledge of their subject and weaknesses in their teaching methods are threatening to limit improvements in reading, writing and numeracy, the analysis for the Department for Education and Skills found. The report, 3 a team of academics from Toronto University, concluded that it was difficult to assess the effect of the 4 on pupils' learning. While literacy and numeracy scores had risen significantly between 1997 and 2002, much of the increases had 5 before the introduction of the two strategies: literacy in 1998 and numeracy in 1999. The team, led by Professor Michael Fullan, also warned ministers against 6 ever higher targets for schools, arguing that this would backfire when staff began to regard the goals as 7 . But this advice came too late for the Government, which has already set new and higher targets for primary schools, 8 failing to meet the previous goals in the summer. Soon after coming to power in 1997, the Labour government set challenging targets which required 80 percent of Il-year-olds to reach a required 9 in English, and 75 percent in maths, by 2002. But after a strong start, the improvements tailed off and both 10 were missed. Despite this failure, ministers have repeated their desire to push ahead with more demanding goals that require 85 percent of students to reach the standard in English and maths by 2004. The team of academics highlighted the 11 of some primary teachers' knowledge. "For the strategies to succeed in the ways that strategy leaders believe 12 possible, many teachers will need to be highly skilled and more knowledgeable about teaching literacy and mathematics than is currently the case," the report said. "The data indicate that for many teachers, gaps or weaknesses in subject knowledge limit the extent 13 they can make full use of the frameworks and resources of the strategies." The 14 also said that the high-profile nature of the targets had had "unintended negative consequences" for primary schools. The team cast 15 on ministers' ambition to improve standards further. The pressure on teachers to comply with directives from central government threatened to create a "culture of dependence" that would make it difficult for schools to raise standards once the ministers' focus had moved, the report concluded.
[解析] 本句可以简化为succeed in the ways that are possible。而strategy leaders believe可以被认为是插入语,相当于定语从句which strategy leaders believe。如果用to be,那么比较符合习惯的表达法应该是用believe something possible,习惯表达中应该是省略to be的。

TEXT A
Nutritionist's Advice
Eating correctly in your 20s and 30s can be a matter of visual aesthetics, rather than a tiresome exercise in milligram counting. Eat by the colors. If you put a rainbow on your plate, you will probably be getting the nutrients you need. Iceberg, potatoes, white bread — these probably are not as loaded with goodies as a riotously colorful plate of sweet potatoes, mixed greens, peppers, and golden roasted chicken! Put the mushy next to the crispy, the smooth next to the noisy. Stop worrying about counting things and worrying about taste and eating. However, the 20s and especially your 30s may also mark the end of your participation in the work softball team; you may go dancing less than you did before. Your caloric requirements begin to drop. An active woman in her 20s may get away with 2,500 calories a day — she has to see if she is gaining weight on that. Two thousand calories are probably a better target. Calcium is also important in your 20S. Bones aren't fully formed in your teens; they continue to strengthen until age 30. Vitamin D is also important in these years — you may get enough from milk if you drink it, or the sun, but Nelson says some women should supplement. You need 200 IU of the vitamin up to age 50, increasing to 400 IU a day from age 50 to 70, and 600 IU above 70. Magnesium is also important at this age because it can be of some help. Load up on spinach, peanuts, black beans, brown rice, and sea bass. Similarly, vitamin B-6, found in garbanzo beans, sunflower seeds, and avocado, can help with fluid retention. Other sources include red meat, dried fruits, and dried beans, Iron from non-meat sources is absorbed better if vitamin C is added — so throw some orange slices in that spinach salad.
1. "Stop worrying about counting things and worry about taste and eating" means
A.when one is in one's teens, one should eat things one does not like.
B.one should be more aesthetically conscious while eating things.
C.nutrients may be gained from one's riotously colorful plate of food.
D.one does not have to care too much about what to eat when young.
A B C D
D
[解析] 根据原句的意思,应该是年轻时不必太注意饮食,可以吃各种各样的食品。
2. In the second paragraph, Nelson says that an active woman in her 20s
A.must be careful when taking 2,500 calories a day.
B.should try to get 2,500 calories a day at least.
C.must lose weight if taking in 2,500 calories a day.
D.cannot do without a minimum 2,500 calories a day.
A B C D
A
[解析] 问题关于摄入多少卡路里为宜。相关的句子she has to see if she is gaining weight on that. Two thousand calories are probably a better target。说明2500卡路里是可以的,但是必须注意体重是否增加了。所以,最好还是2000卡路里为宜。
3. Which of the following can help with fluid retention?
A.Vitamin B-6.
B.Calories.
C.Magnesium.
D.Calcium.
A B C D
A
[解析] 本题为细节题。在第4段里有句子Similarly,vitamin B-6,found in garbanzo beans, sunflower seeds, and avocado, can help with fluid retention。明确地说明了维他命B-6可以保持体液。
TEXT B
Andrew Carnegie
Born in Scotland, in 1835, Andrew Carnegie entered the world in poverty. Carnegie's father came to America when Andrew was twelve, and his brother, Thomas, was five. Arriving in New York in 1848, the Carnegies settled in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania Allegheny City provided Carnegie's first job, as a bobbin boy in a cotton factory, working for $1.20 a week. At 15, Carnegie became a telegraph messenger boy in Pittsburgh. Carnegie's next job was as a railroad clerk, working for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He worked his way up the ladder, through his dedication and honest desire to succeed, to become train dispatcher and then division manager. At this time, young Carnegie, age 24, had already made some small investments that laid the foundations of his what would be tremendous fortune. One of these investments was the purchase of stock in the Woodruff Sleeping Car Company. In 1864, Carnegie entered the iron business, but did not begin to make steel until years later. In 1873, he built the Edgar Thomson works in Braddock, Pennsylvania, to make Bessemer steel. He established many other steel plants, and in 1892, he merged all of his interests into the Carnegie Steel Company. This act from Carnegie is fitting with one of his most famous quotations, "Put all of your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket." This firm became one of the greatest industrial enterprises in America. Carnegie later sold it to J. P. Morgan's United States Steel Corporation in 1901 for $ 400 million, which would be a little over $4 billion today! After retiring, Carnegie's fortune was estimated to be as large as half a billion dollars. From that time on, with the philosophy that the rich have a moral obligation to give away their money, he devoted himself to philanthropy. Although ironic, this man of great fortune strongly believed in the merits of poverty for the development of character and work ethic, and determined that wealthy men should not leave their fortunes to their children, but should give it away, claiming "The man who dies thus rich, dies disgraced." With the picture of community service, Carnegie is quoted as saying, "Pittsburgh entered the core of my heart when I was a boy, and cannot be torn out. I can never be one hair's breadth less loyal to her, or less anxious to help her in any way, than I have been since I could help anything. My treasure is still with you, and how best to serve Pittsburgh is the question which occurs to me almost every day of my life."
1. Andrew Carnegie was
A.an American by origin.
B.an Irishman by origin.

B.Andrew Carnegie put all his money into one basket for safety.
C.Andrew Carnegie became wealthy by merging his companies.
D.Andrew Carnegie made his first investment in the steel industry.
A B C D

[解析] 本题是推理题。卡内基的成功在于他大胆投资。谚语put all one's eggs in one basket:孤注一掷;冒风险的意思。选项B错了,是把谚语按照字面意思理解了,而且意思也变成了投资目的是为了安全,而不是冒险。而把几家公司合并并不是成功的根本原因。
4. From the last paragraph of this passage, it can be concluded that Andrew Carnegie would agree that
A.one must work hard to get somewhere in the world.
B.one must be able to make a wise decision on investment.
C.one must not die with a huge amount of money left unused.
D.one must treasure the city where one has lived for all one's life.

A
The man who dies thus rich, dies disgraced。他只是说“死于富是耻辱”。选项D不合适是因为他自己确实是这样认为,他应该对匹兹堡做出贡献,但这并不说明他会让每一个人都这样去做。选项A是根据这一段里这句话推理出来。Although ironic, this man of great fortune strongly believed in the merits of poverty for the development of character and work ethic:贫穷可以锻炼性格,奋斗可以获得成功。词组get somewhere:有所作为。
TEXT C
US Higher Education
Lurking behind the gleaming promise of every wide-eyed freshman is a dark fact of US higher education: Half of those who enroll at four-year colleges and universities will never graduate. That means about 600,000 students each year will not complete their bachelor's degree, concludes a new US Department of Education study. And it asks: "Is there too much emphasis on getting a four-year college degree?" It is almost a heretical question. A college degree has never been more coveted — or sought after. A record 14.9 million students enrolled this year. More than 96 percent of high school seniors say college is important — and two-thirds expect to earn a bachelor's degree. It's a significant change from the early 1980s, when just 52 percent of seniors expected to enroll in any college. Now, "College for all" is the new mentality — urged by parents, guidance counselors, and political leaders of all stripes. College has become a default decision. Tons of unprepared high school graduates are shoveled into four-year colleges. But they just don't know why they're there. So something is not quite right with this picture. The bachelor's degree is being oversold to many high schoolers who do not truly want the experience or have only a slim chance of attaining a four-year degree. As a result, many students end up on campus without a clear sense of what they expect to gain from a college education. And that can affect everything from choosing the right school at the. outset to picking a major or setting a career path — or even dropping out, as growing numbers are doing. Perhaps as significant a factor in boosting the "college for all" view has been a shift in college counseling. In the 1960s, high school counselors viewed themselves as gatekeepers. Criticized for elitism, they changed. One study shows counselors recommending college to 66 percent of high school seniors in 1992, double the rate of a decade earlier. Higher education has been very accommodating of this shift. Open-admissions policies expanded to roughly three-quarters of all higher-education institutions, with remedial education available at the vast majority. About 40 percent of those chasing a four-year degree are only marginally academically qualified. Critics say the trend is a result of a "one-way-to-win" mentality. Too many families cling to the mythology that their child can be a success only if he or she has a college degree. And the assumption poorly serves candidates who might benefit from either delaying the experience, taking a few career-related courses, attending a vocational-training school, or learning about the myriad other ways to enter the work force.

TEXT D In a scene repeated at some of the nation's most prestigious universities over the last week, students and employees have found themselves face-to-face with federal law enforcement agents offering them a choice: Talk to us about thrill-seeking software piracy gangs or face a prison cell. The Customs Service, which is conducting the questionings, said many of the students and university employees were cooperating with the inquiry, which is being described as the largest criminal investigation of software piracy ever by the federal government. Investigators say the inquiry has expanded exponentially since it was announced late last week with raids at several universities, including Duke, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California at Los Angeles, and on the offices of several software and computer companies around the country. In the days since, many of the people under investigation, which includes executives at software companies, have quietly begun cooperating. Their information led to raids on at least one other university, the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. Law-enforcement officials said more raids were imminent as they tried to shut down a multi-billion dollar international piracy ring that had stolen everything from the latest version of popular office software to digitized versions of new hit films and had shared the software around the world through Internet sites, such as the latest version of the Windows operating system, Windows XP, and such recent Hollywood fare as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and Behind Enemy Lines. Investigators say some of the software appears to have been stolen by executives and other insiders at the companies where it was made, which explains the raids on corporate offices. Customs officials said they believed that their efforts had shut down the piracy gang, known as the "DrinkOrDie" network, and that other, similar piracy gangs were being investigated. The Customs Service estimates that DrinkOrDie has more than 200 members around the world. "We were able to totally dismantle DrinkOrDie," said Kevin Delli-Colli, the director of the Customs Service Cyber Smuggling Center in Fairfax, outside Washington. "Most of the leadership has been exposed by the investigation." A Web site that had been used by the network to share software, www. drinkordie, com, was shut down last week. Law enforcement officials say that the results of the investigation so far, which is being called Operation Buccaneer, continue to support the theory that the ringleaders of the network were motivated by thrill-seeking, rather than by profit, but that their crimes have allowed others to profit from the sale of pirated software. No arrests have been made so far, because the Customs Service is trying to persuade more suspects to cooperate in exchange for leniency.

1. From: Jeff Pages Subject: Bare feet in the rain Date: 29 Jan 02 17:38:02 EST It has been raining constantly in Sydney for the last two days, after what has so far been a very dry summer. My walk from the railway station to work takes in about 2km of forest trail, with a varying surface of gravel, sand, clay and sandstone outcrops. In the dry it is a pleasant barefoot walk but in the wet it becomes a magical experience, particularly at this time of the year with the temperature around 24 ℃ (75 F). On the steeper sections of the trail there is water cascading down the rocks and it feels great clambering up with the water splashing over my feet. The forecast is for the rain to continue till at least the middle of next week so I should have nice muddy wet feet for a few more days yet. Happy barefootin', JeffWhich of the following statements is true of Jeff, according to the letter?
1. Most people experience computers as "end-users" of packaged programs. Unfortunately the writers of these programs can't know the details of the job you are trying to do. Trying to meet the needs of diverse users, they bloat their programs with hundreds of features most people never use. Life (and programs) would be much simpler if each user could add the functions he/she wanted. Providing this capability in a program is not trivial. The programs must be designed to accept user- written components in appropriate places. There must be a way to store and manage them. Most important, since most users do not have the time or inclination to learn the tools and skills of a professional programmer, reasonable compromises are required. Because of wide differences among the users and their purposes, there is no one method of end-user programming. Ideally there is a smooth progression from simple but limited metaphors, to more complex and powerful techniques as the user-programmer advances. What is the following passage all about?
A.End-user Programming.
B.Computers.
C.End-users of packaged programs.
D.Appropriate metaphors..

Commercial Vices
The commercial vices are drugs. The appeals of the commercial vices are so strong and widespread that attempts to prohibit them in western countries have always failed. The evils of these vices are threefold: Those who practice them suffer, the criminals who sell them prosper, and the enforcement organizations are expensive, unsuccessful, and often corrupt. Drugs is one of the three commercial vices — gambling and prostitution — accepted as unstoppable, but there evils have been minimized by legalization and regulation. The United States attempted to prohibit alcohol and failed. The Mafia made its money by bootlegging alcohol. The gangsters of the twenties and thirties were in the alcohol business just as the drug peddlers of today are in the drug business. When alcohol prohibition was repealed and sale by licensed dealers was instituted, the Mafia went out of the liquor business and the revenue agents assigned to stop the illegal business went out of business too. The quality of regulated liquor became assured and taxed, revenue not high enough to motivate bootlegging. It became a source of public revenue. In conclusion, the government should take any law they can't enforce and turn it around in order to make and save money. But they are also making fewer jobs for the police and other law enforcement agencies. I believe that in the end this way of doing things will be more likely feasible.
1. The Mafia went out of the liquor business,
A.because the quality of regulated liquor became assured and taxed.
B.because the bootlegging became a source of public revenue.
C.because they settled trade disputes with gunfire but without profit.
D.because there was no more revenue worth risking their lives.

B.The government should take measures to make enforceable laws.
C.The government should legally turn the vices into order and profits.
D.The government is effective in stopping the commercial vices.

The Corruption of Power
The rights we are granted by the Constitution to guarantee the basic freedoms of speech, religion, petition, press, and assembly. By exercising these rights, freedom can be discovered, and can also be costly. The corruption for power is a popular factor in the decay of American rights. For example, if the underdog wishes to attack the wrong doings of leaders, the underdog's accusations may be twisted and undermine the real issue. The power to distort often gives the assistance to higher authority, and often leads to victory. Therefore people often lose rights that they have originally been given. Given the fact that out of all Americans today, two percent are millionaires, and fifty percent of this number happen to be Jewish people; this might reinforce the belief that the persecution lead the Jewish to become a strong entity that would not be defeated. America's leaders seem oblivious to the corruption that they are leading to, by denying the rights of one to support the powerful. "Money is the root of all evil, and a man needs roots."
