[听力原文] A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress. It always receives us with the same kindness, amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting and consoling us in age. Men often discover their affinity to each other by the mutual love they have for a book just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both entertain for a third. There is an old proverb, "Love me, love my dog. " But there is more wisdom in this: "Love me, love my book. " The book is a truer and higher bond of union. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author. They live in him together, and he in them.

1. According to the woman, what governs the clothes we wear?
A.A desire to display one's wealth and express oneself.
B.Love for beauty and a desire to impress others.
C.Individual taste and love for beauty.
D.Individual taste and a desire to express oneself.
A B C D
D
[听力原文]1-4 M: Do you really believe that clothes carry a kind of message and that what we put on is a reflection of what we feel? W: Oh, yeah. Now people are beginning to take seriously the idea of a kind of psychology of clothing, to believe that there is not just individual taste but also a thinking that is trying to express something we may not even be aware of ourselves. M: But surely this has always been the case. We all dress up when we want to impress someone; we tend to put on something smart. W: But that's a conscious act. What I am talking about is more of a subconscious thing. Take for example the student away from home at university: if he tends to wrap himself up more than others, this is because he is probably feeling homesick. Similarly, a general feeling of insecurity can sometimes take the form of overdressing in warmer clothes than necessary. M: Can you give any other examples? W: Yes. I think people who are sociable tend to dress in an extroverted way, preferring brighter or more dazzling colors--yellows, bright reds, and so on. M: Do you think the care--or lack of it--over the way we wear has anything to tell us? W: Yes, indeed. The length of a man's trousers speaks volumes about his awareness of his own image. If his trousers are very short or having loosely, this probably means he's absorbed by other things.
2. In support of the unusual warm clothes some people wear, what can we infer from such a phenomenon?

B: Sir, our room prices are slightly higher than you may have thought. Will that be Okay? A: Tell me how much it will be, and I can tell you if it's Okay. B: Only $ 308 per night, before taxes, of course. A: $ 308 a night? That's a fair price. B: Now, as for the room, Sir, do you prefer smoking or nonsmoking? A: Nonsmoking, please. B: Nonsmoking. Now, Sir, does a single queen-size bed meet your approval? A: I have absolutely no problem with that. B: Queen, nonsmoking. Okay, Sir, your room is reserved. D. It was only sold to patients.
A B C D
B
[听力原文] 14-17 How many of you drink cola? Nearly everyone. Did you know that (14) cola started out not as a soft drink but as a cure for headaches back in the late 1800s? John S. Pemberton, a druggist from Atlanta, had experimented for many months trying to find a cure for the common headache. He worked in his backyard, mixing and heating different combinations of oils and flavors until he found one that seemed promising. Pemberton bottled the mixture and began selling it in drugstores as concentrated syrup that (15) the customer had to mix with water before drinking. (16) Cola's transformation from medicinal syrup to a carbonated soft drink came about quite by accident. One day, a customer came into a drugstore complaining of a headache and asked for a bottle of cola syrup. He wanted to take it fight away. So he asked the clerk to mix the medicine while he waited. The clerk, instead of walking to the other end of the counter to get plain water, suggested mixing the syrup with soda water. The customer agreed, and after drinking it, remarked how good it tasted. The clerk continued offering the mix and carbonated cola grew in popularity. (17) Today carbonated cola is sold in most countries around the world. And although they no longer contain the ingredients used to cure headaches, they are still very refreshing.
2. What should customers do before drinking the syrup?
5. 18. According to this passage, the Roman soldiers mainly depended upon ______to send their messages.
A. fine weather
B. signal towers
C. the spelling system
D. arm movements
A B C D
B
[听力原文] 14-17 Greek soldiers sent messages by turning their shields toward the sun. The flashes reflected light could be seen several miles away. The enemy did not know what the flashes meant, but other Greek soldiers could understand the messages. [14]Roman soldiers in some places built long rows of signal towers. When they had a message to send, the soldiers shouted it from tower to tower. If there were enough towers and enough soldiers with loud voices, important news could be sent quickly over distance. [16]In Africa, people learned to send messages by beating on a series of large drums. Each drum was kept within hearing distance of the next one. The drum beats were sent out in a special way that all the drummers understood. Though the messages were simple, they could be sent at great speed for hundreds of miles. In the eighteenth century, [15]a French engineer found a new way to send short messages. In this way, a person held a flag in each hand and the arms were moved to various positions representing different letters of the alphabet. It was like spelling out words with flags and arms. Over a long period of time, people sent messages by all these different ways. [17]However, not until the telephone was invented in America in the nineteenth century could people send speech sounds over a great distance in just a few seconds.

[C] £ 33.70.
[D] £ 13.40.

[听力原文] 18-20 Child benefit is one of the few non-means-tested benefits left. It is claimed by nearly all families with children, regardless of their income. (18) It is worth £20.30 every week for a first-born child. For each subsequent child, there is an additional weekly payment of £ 13.40. The money is not taxed. It is available for every child in the UK below the age of 16 ; child benefit is paid to the parent directly responsible for care of the youngster. (19) Those in full-time education remain eligible until the age of 19, but the cut-off point for children registered for work or training is 18. (20) But from 2013, the government will withdraw child benefit from families in which one or both parents are higher-rate taxpayers, Families where both parents are on modest incomes will not be affected. The measure would affect people earning more than £ 44,000 a year. That means people in the 40% income tax bracket, and those whose taxable earnings are above £ 150,000, who therefore pay the new 50% additional rate of income tax. There are an estimated 3,274,000 individuals who will pay tax at these levels this year. The proposal means that if both parents earn less than £ 44,000, they will continue to receive child benefit. But families with one main earner on, for example,£ 45,000, will see their benefit stopped.

[听力原文] 23-25 Among the challenges facing the Middle East is declining access to water. Experts at a conference organized by the Middle East Institute in Washington believe the growing need for water in the region is also a potential source of cooperation. Experts say 45 million people in the Middle East lack access to drinking water. The problem is particularly acute today, because drought conditions in countries including Syria, Jordan and Israel are the worst in decades, slowing agricultural output. The matter is longstanding and multi-faceted. It includes the lack of international agreements over water resources. As an example, conflict between Turkey, Syria and Iraq about the flows of the shared Tigris and Euphrates rivers has intensified in recent years. There are also imbalances in water access between neighboring populations. Palestinians use a quarter of the water consumed by their Israeli neighbors. The result is a potentially explosive situation. Some experts say water problems contributed to war in 1967, when Israel and Syria fought over the Golan Heights and access to the freshwater Sea of Galilee.

The words and music are an updated version of "We Are the World," a song that raised at least $30 millions for African humanitarian programs 25 years ago. Lionel Richie who co-wrote the first song with Michael Jackson is organizing the effort. The original producer, Quincy Jones, is using the same studio he used in 1985. Reporters and security surrounded Henson Studios, anticipating the arrival of limousines delivering the stars Monday afternoon for what is expected to be a marathon recording session. Smokey Robinson, who sang on the original, said [26]the list of 100 singers asked to take part does not include any of the 45 stars from the previous version. Organizers have not said when the song might be ready for the world to hear.

D.Furthermore
A B C D
A
四个选项中只有A项Indeed(的确,确实)符合题意。 Mr. Yang is 82 years old.Indeed,he is old enough to be her grandpa.
2.
A.stand
B.cope
C.approve
D.retain
A B C D
B
Facing unprecedented problems,the Federal Reserve of the early 1930s couldn't cope.(20世纪30年代初,联邦储备银行面对一些前所未有的问题,无计可施。) A项stand意为“经受,抵抗”,例如:stand the test of time(经受时间的考验)。
3.
A.in
B.for
C.with
D.toward
A B C D
D
为目标”,例如: efforts toward peace(以和平为目标所做出的努力)。 C项with可与help构成搭配to help sb.with sth.,但此句型表示的是“帮助某人做某事”,与题意不符。例如:help me with my French(帮助我学习法语)。
4.
A.raise
B.add
C.take
D.keep
A B C D
A
B项add也意为“增加”,但它的宾语一般是具体数字,例如:add 300 dollars to his normal wage。
18.
A.So
B.Since
C.As
D.Thus
A B C D
C

20. 56.
A. supervision
B. manipulation
C. regulation
D. coordination
A B C D
D

26. If you want to know the train schedule, please ______ at the booking office.
A.acquire
B.inquire
C.request
D.require
A B C D
B
inquire的搭配有: inquire about(询问有关情况);inquire after(问安);inquire for(求见);inquire into(探究):acquire意为“获得,求得”,如:He acquired a good knowledge of English by careful study.(他通过认真学习,熟练地掌握了英语。)
27. The increase of wages should be ______to the rise in price.
A.considerable
B.proportional
C.responsible
D.reasonable
A B C D
B
proportional意为“成适当比例的,相称的”,与to连用,本句中be proportional to the rise in price表示“与价格上涨成比例的”,故[B]为答案。
28. Everything was so shocking that he suffered a nervous breakdown. The memories of the evening were too ______ to be easily assuaged by sleep.
PART Ⅴ READING COMPREHENSION In this section there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked [A], [B], [C] and [D]. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answers on your answer sheet.
TEXT A The idea of test-tube babies may make you either delighted at the wonders of modern medicine or irritated while considering the moral, or legal, or technological implications of starting life in a laboratory. But if you've ever been pregnant yourself, one thing is certain: You wonder what it's like to carry a test-tube baby. Are these pregnancies normal? Are the babies normal? The earliest answers come from Australia, where a group of medical experts at the Queen Victoria Medical Center in Melbourne have taken a look at the continent's first nine successful in vitro pregnancies. The Australians report that the pregnancies themselves seemed to have proceeded according to plan, but at birth some unusual trends did show up. Seven of the nine babies turned out to be girls. Six of the nine were delivered by Caesarean section. And one baby, a twin, was born with a serious heart defect and a few days later developed life-threatening problems. What does it all mean? Even the doctors don't know for sure, because the numbers are so small. The proportion of girls to boys is high, but until there are many more test-tube babies no one will know whether that's something that just happened to be like that or something special that happens when egg meets sperm in a test tube instead of a fallopian tube. The same thing is true of the single heart defect. It usually shows up in only 15 out of 60,000 births in that part of Australia, but the fact that it occurred in one out of nine test-tube babies does not necessarily mean that they are at special risk. One thing the doctors can explain is the high number of Caesareans. Most of the mothers were older, had long histories of fertility problems and in some cases had had surgery on the fallopian tubes, all of which made them likely candidates for Caesareans anyway. The Australian researchers report that they are quite encouraged. All the babies are now making normal progress, even the twin with the birth defects.
1. According to the passage, what concern will the test-tube baby raise?
A.Why the proportion of defected babies is so high.
B.Why the number of Caesareans is so high.
C.Whether the pregnancies of test-tube babies would be normal.
D.Whether the test-tube babies would be encouraged.
A B C D
C
Are the babies normal?”
2. 88. What does the term "in vitro" ( Line 2-3, Para. 2) most probably mean?A. Normal.B. Built-in.C. Test-tube.D. Formal.
3. Which of the following statements about the experiment mentioned in the passage is TRUE?
A.Only the twins are defected.
B.Most of the babies are delivered by means of Caesarean.
C.There are some troubles during all mothers' pregnancies.
D.One baby appears to be abnormal.
A B C D
B
首先定位到文章第二段,由“Six of the nine were delivered by Caesarean section.” 可再通过本段末句判断A、D两选项均与原文内容不符,根据“The Australians report that the pregnancies themselves seemed to have proceeded according to plan, but at birth some unusual trends did show up.”
4. Which of the following explanations regarding the high number of Caesarean operation is NOT true?
A.Some mothers have passed the best age for a natural delivery.
B.Some mothers have fertility problems.
C.Some mothers favor the operations of this type.
D.Some mothers have had surgical operations on their fallopian tubes.
TEXT B Clothing was not in any way a practical necessity in ancient Egypt. Egypt ( and most of the rest of North Africa) was not the mainly desert country it is today, subject to the temperature extremes that a dry climate generates. Then it was a lush, food-producing country,' subject to annual flooding, and a warm, humid climate. Clothing was therefore a luxury item of no great practical value. Slaves and the poor in surviving ancient Egyptian art are therefore usually depicted in little more than loincloths. As people went up the social scale more clothing and jewelry was worn, but even .then the fabric of the clothing is light and designed more to accentuate the shape of the body than conceal it.①The most elaborate Egyptian clothing was worn by the Pharaohs and their queens as symbols of power. It is thought by some that royal Egyptians practiced body modification by wrapping the skulls of infants and altering the head shape to be more egg-like than rounded in adulthood, others ascribe this to a natural genetic fluke in the royal family. Aristocratic Egyptians also often shaved their heads (and other body hair) and wore wigs instead of natural hair to formal occasions. Kohl eye makeup was worn by both sexes, as were perfumes and body oils. During banquets, guests wore small mounds of beeswax impregnated with perfumed oil on top of their wigs ; these mounds would melt into the wigs with the heat of the room, releasing scent, during the course of the party. Jewelry was the dominant costume focus, worn by both sexes; numerous examples of ancient Egyptian jewelry survive in museums. Clothing has been less fortunate in survival, but linen textile scraps remain to indicate that the mostly white pleated materials that are shown in ancient drawings were probably fine linens. These pleated linen garments are usually depicted as straight pieces of cloth, pleated to give a body-hugging stretch that are wrapped in a variety of ways and tied or tucked in front.
1. As described in the passage, both sexes of ancient Egypt did the following things EXCEPT
A.using perfumes
B.wearing jewelry
C.wearing eye makeup
D.wearing skirts
A B C D
D
由“Kohl eye makeup was worn by both sexes, as were perfumes and body oils.”和“Jewelry was the dominant costume focus, worn by both sexes”可知,[D]“裙子”在文中没有提及,故为答案。
2. According to the passage, which of the following statements is CORRECT?
A.There is more clothing than jewelry in today's museums.
B.The materials of ancient Egyptian clothes were of poor quality.
C.Ancient Egyptians wore wigs on official occasions.
D.In ancient Egypt, people wore clothes in order to cover their bodies.
A B C D
C
选项[C]对应文中第二段“Aristocratic Egyptians also often shaved their heads(and other body hair) and wore wigs instead of natural hair to formal occasions.”
3. In ancient Egypt, which of the following people did NOT wear more clothes than others?
TEXT C Some politicians are scurrying about with much zest and anticipation. It is time, their polls inform them, to find the quick fix for what they have determined is a society plagued by the irregular heartbeat of deficient values. But there are contradictions that intrude on this denunciatory atmosphere. If there are moral omissions in the society, they cannot be sealed by instant, slenderly based attacks on entertainment. The plain fact is we are rearranging our priorities in the wrong way. We are today misplacing our energies and our funding by directing all sorts of incentives to high schools and colleges. That is too late. The moral scaffolding has been built by then, for better or for worse. How then to begin this revision of life conduct? We must introduce in pre-school, and keep alive through grade five, a new school course. The course could be titled, "What is right, and what is plainly wrong." For 30 minutes each day, the teacher would illuminate for these very young children what William Faulkner labeled "the old verities", the words that construct and implement the daily moral grind in every durable society must engage if it is to be judged a "just" society. These are words like duty, honor, service, integrity, pity, pride, compassion and sacrifice, plus the clear demonstration that violence is wrong. To the teaching of the meaning of those words must be added that cleansing rule of treating other people as you would want them to treat you. And most of all to make sure that these kids understand with growing clarity that home, school and church are the sanctuaries for their later life. There is a grand simplicity to this kind of school course. It enters a child's mind early, burrowing deep into those recesses of the human brain that even today advanced medical science has not been able to penetrate. If you ask enough people, you will find that most of us remember our first or second grade teacher. I remember Miss Corbett and Miss Walker, who read to us before we really understood, but the words had weight and allure. We listened and, without really knowing it, we learned and saved what we learned. Perhaps, it was because what we heard in those early school years was the first entry into our learning vessel. Absent this kind of early instruction, absent the building of this moral shield, no congressional law, no presidential executive order, no fiery rhetoric will salvage a child's conduct nor locate a missing moral core.
1. According to the author, some politicians attribute the society's deteriorated moral values to ______ .
3. "The old verities" labeled by William Faulkner (Line 2, Para. 4) must refer to ______ .
A.the past ways for ruling a society
B.the society's established virtues
C.the traditional doctrines and justice
D.the out-of-date moral conducts
A B C D
B
根据第四段的“the old verities”,“the words that construct and implement the daily moral grind”,以及第五段第一句话“These are words like duty, honor, service, integrity, pity, pride, compassion and sacrifice, plus the clear demonstration that violence is wrong”可知福克纳指的是社会公认的美德。
4. By mentioning one's first-or-second-grade teacher, the author intends to convey an idea that ______ .
A.teachers are the moral models of young children
B.teachers at elementary level of schools are of great help to the children's career success
C.one's early education influences him all his life
D.children are more purer at their early age and early school years are their best memory
A B C D
C
从倒数第二段最后一句“it was because what we heard in those early school years was the first entry into our learning vessel”以及文章最后一段几个假设,“no congressional law,no presidential executive order,no fiery rhetoric will salvage a child's conduct nor locate a missing moral core”:如果没有这种早期教育,什么法律、说教都不能拯救孩子的行为。
5. Which of the following can best summarize the author's argument?
A.Home, school and church are responsible for education.
B.Administrative and political measures are not the only way to solve social problems.
C.Caution should be taken in making educational policies.
D.Young children need moral instruction in school.
TEXT D A middle-aged couple sits in front of a TV set. He flicks idly through a magazine, she holds a drink. An advertisement for Marks & Spencer, a British retailer, comes on. It is a humdrum domestic scene, one that could have been captured at any point in the past 50 years. The husband and wife are playing back a programme that they have captured on a digital video recorder—something they do often. They do not need to watch advertisements. Indeed, they claim never to do so. Whenever an ad comes on during a recorded programme, the husband says in an interview, he zips through it at 30 times the normal speed. Just outside Brighton, on England's south coast, Sarah Pearson watches people watch television. She has almost 100,000 hours of video showing utterly banal scenes—people channel-surfing, fighting over the remote control and napping. Her findings are astonishing. There turns out to be an enormous gap between how people say they watch television and how they actually do. This gap contains clues to why television is so successful, and why so many attempts to transform it through technology have failed. In the past few years viewers have gained much more control over television. Video-cassette recorders have been replaced by DVD players and digital video recorders (DVRs) , both of which are easier to use. Cable and satellite firms offer a growing number of videos on demand. TV has gone online and become mobile. As a result, viewers' expectations have (hanged dramatically. Katsuaki Suzuki of Fuji Television, Japan's biggest broadcaster, says nobody feels they need to be at home to catch the 9 p.m. drama any more.① But a change in expectations is not quite the same as a change in behaviour. Although it is easier than ever to watch programmes at a time and on a device of one's choosing, and people expect to be able to do so, nearly all TV is nonetheless watched live on a television set. ② Even in British homes with a Sky + box, which allows for easy recording of programmes, almost 85% of television straws are viewed at the time the broadcasters see fit to air them. ③ " People want to watch ' Pop Idol' when everyone else is watching it," says Mike Darcey of BSkyB. If that is not possible, they watch it as soon as they eats afterwards. Some 60% of all shows recorded on Sky + boxes are viewed within a day.
1. According to the passage, the husband is______.
A.a programmer
B.an interviewee
C.a producer
D.an employee
A B C D
B
末句指出“the husband says in an interview,he zips through it at 30 times the normal speed”,从句中的interview可以看出,该人是一名受访者,故[B]为答案。
2. When watching TV, people do all the followings EXCEPT______.
A.switching channels
B.arguing over trifles
C.dozing off
D.seizing the remote control
A B C D
B
第三段第二句指出“She has almost 100,000 hours of video showing utterly banal scenes—people channel—surfing, fighting over the remote control and napping”,这里没有提及就琐事争吵,[B]不符合文意,故为答案。[A]是对channel—surfing“换频道”的解释;[C]与napping“小睡”同义,意为“打瞌睡”;[D]是对fighting over the remote control“抢夺遥控器”的同义转述。
3. We can infer that what the husband and wife claim is NOT______.
A.matter-of-fact
B.well-grounded
C.reasonable
D.feasible
A B C D
A
第三段第三句和第四句指出“Her findings are astonishing. There turns out to be an enormous gap between how people say they watch television and how they actually do.”,有关于how people say they watch television的内容只在第二段有所提及,即“They do not need to watch advertisements. Indeed, they claim never to do so.”,由此可以推断,那两个人在采访中所说的并非实情,故[A]为答案。
4. Viewer's expectations of TV programs have changed due to______.
A.the advancement of technology
B.the richness of recreational activities
C.the rapid spread of the Interne
D.the large quantity of programs
A B C D
A
倒数第二句指出“As a result, viewers' expectations have changed dramatically.”,之前提到的原因是“Video—cassette recorders have been replaced by DVD players and digital video recorders(DVRs),both of which are easier to use. Cable and satellite firms offer a growing number of videos on demand. TV has gone online and become mobile.”,这些都属于技术进步范畴,故[A]为答案。
5. The passage aims to show us______.
A.why people tend to change channels
B.how people really watch television
C.what people prefer to watch on TV
D.when people watch television
A B C D
B
第四段解释了电视技术的节目,但第五段话锋一转“But a change in expectations is not quite the same as a change in behaviour.”,接着对其进行具体阐释:可几乎对于所有的电视节目,人们都是通过电视机看直播的。

SECTION A COMPOSITION When people form opinions about someone or something, what affects them most is not substance but style. Is style more important than substance? Write a composition on this issue.
1. Recently government agencies in some big cities have been studying the possibility of putting a "pollution tax" on private cars. The amount of tax private car owners would have to pay would depend on the emission levels, i.e. engine or vehicle size. This has caused quite a stir among the public. Some regard it as an effective way to control the number of cars and reduce pollution in the city. But others don't think so. What is your opinion? Write on ANSWER SHEET THREE a composition of about 200 words on the following topic:
Should Private Car Owners be Taxed for Pollution?
You are to write in three parts. In the first part, state specifically what your opinion is. In the second part, provide one or two reasons to support your opinion. In the last part, bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or make a summary. Marks will be awarded for content, organization, language and appropriateness. Failure to follow the instructions may result in a loss of marks.

[1]In recent years, China has witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of private cars, which has inevitably worsened the state of air pollution. Confronted with this problem, government agencies in some big cities have been considering taxing private car owners for pollution. This issue has given rise to a heated discussion. [2]For my part, I'm all for the idea of a pollution tax. [3]In the first place, private car owners should pay for the harm they do to the environment. It is an accepted fact that the environment has suffered greatly from car emissions, which partly account for deteriorating air quality, acid ram, and even global warming. Therefore, it is quite reasonable for private car owners to pay a pollution tax, if they insist on using a private car. [4]Furthermore, with this tax, the government will hopefully curb the soaring number of private cars. For instance, given strict policies like this, some people may have to put aside the plan of buying a car. [5]In addition, such a tax serves as a warning of the grave situation of air pollution, which will then help raise people's awareness of environmental protection. [6]To sum up, the pollution tax will be of great benefit in the long ran. If strictly enforced, this policy will sure contribute to the protection of ore" environment.
