[听写提示] 本文的主要难点集中在中间两句:Literature shares its place in the favor of the crowd with amusements undreamed of a hundred years ago. The time for leisurely reading of ten-volume novels appears to have passed. undreamed是一个派生词,要更多依靠上下文来判断;ten-volume则需要用语法来判断这是由连字符连接两词构成的新词,否则应该是ten volumes。语法和语音语调的熟练能极大地帮助提高听写的成绩。

You see, I have an international driver's license. W: Uhuh. And how long will you be staying in the United States? M: Probably four years, until I finish my degree. W: Oh. Then you will need to get in Arizona driver's license. M: Do I have to take a driver's test to do that? W: Yes, you do. You need to come in arid take a written exam and an eye exam, and then you need to take a road test with a parallel parking test. Did you say that you are a student? M: Yes, I'm a student at the university. I don't have ID with me, but I can go and get it. W: Okay. Then you can apply for a limited license. Just come back arid show your student ID, and you can make application for a five-year license. M: Great. That's what I want. So I don't have to take the driver's test then. W: Oh. Yes, you do. The license only costs you ten dollars. A regular license would cost you a lot more than that, but it is valid for more than five years. M: Why can't I just use my international driver's license? M: Distance learning? I've never heard of it. W: Well, it's new this semester. It's only open to psychology majors. But I bet it'll catch on elsewhere. Yesterday over a hundred students signed up. M: Well, what is it? W: It's an experimental course. I registered for Child Psychology. All I got to do is watching a twelve-week series of televised lessons. The department shows them several different times a day and in several different locations. M: Don't you ever have to meet with your professor? W: Yeah. After each part of the series, I have to talk to her and the other students on the phone, you know, about our ideas. Then we'll meet on campus three times for reviews and exams. M: It sounds pretty non-traditional to me. But I guess it makes sense considering how many students have jobs. It must really help with their schedules. Not to mention how it'll cut down on traffic. W: You know, last year my department did a survey and they found out that 80% of ail psychology majors were employed. That's why they came up with the program. Look, I'll be working three days a week next semester and I will either cut back on my classes or try this out. M: The only thing is, doesn't it seem impersonal though? I mean, I miss having class discussions and hearing what other people think. W: Well, I guess that's why phone contacts are important. Anyway it's an experiment. Maybe. But I'll be curious to see how it works out.

SECTION B PASSAGES In this section you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.
[听力原文]11-14 (11)Fifty years ago, Milton Friedman proposed a Voucher System to improve American education. Today, about 36,000 students are served by vouchers. The programs are in the city of the Washington D. C., and three of the fifty states: Florida, Ohio and Wiseonsin. The number of students will grow with 14, 000 new vouchers just approved by lawmakers in Ohio. And Utah will offer a Voucher program for disabled students. (12) A few states offer tax credits or other forms of support to help parents pay for private schools. One objection to vouchers has to do with the fact that most private schools are religious. The Constitution separates government and religion. (14) Voucher critics argue that the use of public money for religious schools is unconstitutional. They suggest public schools should get more money so all children can attend good schools near their home. Yet some people think all families should be offered vouchers, not just poor ones. Milton Freidman and his wife started the Milton and Rose D. Friedman Foundation to work for school choice with the goal to improve, through competition, the quality of education for all. (13) Milton Friedman had his ninety-third birthday on Sunday. The Nobel Prize-winning economist has been talking to reporters about the fiftieth anniversary of his proposal. D.They eat much less than people assume.
A B C D

[听力原文]18-20 (20) To most of us, sharks are the most dangerous fish in the sea and they attack humans. However, according to Doctor Clark, who has studied the behavior of sharks for twelve years, humans are not normally on the sharks' menu. What do sharks feed on, mainly fish and other sea animals? (18) Doctor Clark also found that sharks don't eat as much food as people think. For instance, a nine-year-old shark only needs two pounds of food a day to keep healthy. But she says, sharks sometimes starve and at other times they fill themselves with what they have killed. Around the world, there are only about one hundred shark attacks on humans each year, ten of which proved fatal. But consider this, in the U. S. alone, about three million people are bitten by dogs each year. Of these, thirty people die. If sharks bite you, says Doctor Clark, the reason is usually because of mistaking you for its natural food. For example, say you went underwater-fishing and saw a shark, you could be in trouble. The shark might go for the injured fish you had attacked and take a bite of you at the same time. (19) If you go into a shark's territory and threaten it, it might try to bite you. That's because sharks are territorial and tend to guard their territory. Like dogs, they protect the area they think is their own.

A B C D
D
[听力原文]17-20 People enjoy taking trips, but what are the reasons they leave home? One reason is for education. People travel because they want to broaden their horizons to learn about other people and other places. They are curious about other cultures. When people are tourists, they get a quick look at different ways of living. Even a short look at another kind of lifestyle is an important lesson. On a trip, a person can learn directly —by visiting museums and historic spots. What does a tourist learn who sees the art museums, visits the historical palaces and other scenic spots in Paris, and shops along the River Seine? He gets a vivid picture — a real-life one — of the French people. He learns about their attitudes, how they feel about business, beauty, and history. What about the tourist who goes to Hong Kong? Does he get the same information that he could get from a book? He might read that Hong Kong is crowded, that there is less than 200 square meters of space for each person, but seeing and feeling the lack of space will impress him much more. He might read that there are nearly 200 vehicles for every kilometer of roadway, but the sight of so many vehicles parked along the roadside will be a much more vivid lesson. The tourist to Hong Kong will never forget the contrasts — the straight vertical lines of the tall modem buildings and the moving lines of boats that the people live in.

This is roughly $2 billion more than the company had invested in the previous year. Specifically, AT&T will add 2,000 new cell sites and upgrade existing cell sites with three times more fiber links than it had in 2009. This will increase capacity to connect the cell towers to AT&T's main network. AT&T, which is the only wireless operator in the U.S. selling the iPhone, has been the target of much criticism over this past year, as many iPhone subscribers, [28]particularly in densely populated urban areas, have complained about dropped calls, slow Internet access, and poor service. Some critics claim the company has not been spending enough on network upgrades to keep up with growing demand. [28]AT&T has acknowledged that it has faced some difficulties, particularly in big cities. But the company is "closing the gap."

PART Ⅴ READING COMPREHENSION In this section there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked [A], [B], [C] and [D]. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answers on your answer sheet.
TEXT A The current political debate over family values, personal responsibility, and welfare takes for granted the entrenched American belief that dependence on government assistance is a recent and destructive phenomenon. Conservatives tend to blame this dependence on personal irresponsibility aggravated by a swollen welfare apparatus that saps individual initiative. Liberties are more likely to blame it on personal misfortune magnified by the harsh lot that falls to losers in our competitive market economy. But both sides believe that the "winners" in America make it on their own that dependence reflects some kind of individual or family failure, and that the ideal family is the self-reliance unit of the traditional lore--a family that takes care of its own, carves out a future for its children, and never asks for handouts. Politicians at both ends of the ideological spectrum have wrapped themselves in the mantle of these "family values", arguing over why the poor have not been able to make do without assistance, or whether aid has worsened their situation, but never questioning the assumption that American families traditionally achieve success by establishing their independence from the government. The myth of family self-reliance is so compelling that our actual national and personal histories often buckle under its emotional weight. "We successors always stood on our own two feet," my grandfather used to say about his pioneer heritage, whenever he walked me to the top of the hill to survey the property in Washington State that his family had bought for next to nothing after it had been logged off in Se early 1900s. Perhaps he didn't know that the land came so cheap because much of it was part of a federal subsidy originally allotted to the railroad companies, which had received 183 millions acres of the public domain in the nineteenth century. These federal giveaways were the original source of most major western logging companies' land, and when some of these logging companies moved on to virgin stands of timber, federal lands trickled down to a few early settlers who were able to purchase them inexpensively. Like my grandparents, few families in Americans history--whatever their "values"--have been able to rely solely on their own resources. Instead, they have depended on the legislative, judicial and social-sup-port structures set up by governing authorities, whether those were the clan elders of Native American societies, the church courts and city officials of colonial America, or the judicial and legislative bodies established by the Constitution. At America's inception, this was considered not a dirty little secret but the norm, one that confirmed to social and personal interdependence. The idea that the family should have the sole or even primary responsibility for educating and socializing its members, finding them suitable work, or keeping them from poverty, and crime was not only ridiculous to colonial and revolutionary thinkers but also dangerously parochial.
1. Conservatives believe that welfare services have played a certain role in ______ .
A.heightening individual or family dependence on government assistance

TEXT B I am afraid to sleep. I have been afraid to sleep for the last few weeks. I am so tired that, finally, I do sleep, but only for a few minutes. It is not a bad dream that wakes me; it is the reality I took with me into sleep. I try to think of something else. Immediately the woman in the marketplace comes into my mind. I was on my way to dinner last night when I saw her. She was selling skirts. She moved with the same ease and loveliness I often saw in the women of Laos. Her long black hair was as shiny as the black silk of the skirts she was selling. In her hair, she wore three silk ribbons, blue, green, and white. They reminded me of my childhood and how my girlfriends and I used to spend hours braiding ribbons into our hair. I don't know the word for "ribbons", so I put my hand to my own hair and , with three fingers against my head , I looked at her ribbons and said "Beautiful. " She lowered her eyes and said nothing. I wasn't sure if she understood me (I don't speak Laotian very well). I looked back down at the skirts. They had designs on them. squares and triangles and circles of pink and green silk. They were very pretty. I decided to buy one of those skirts, and I began to bargain with her over the price. It is the custom to bargain in Asia. In Laos bargaining is done in soft voices and easy moves with the sort of quiet peacefulness. She smiled, more with her eyes than with her lips. She was pleased by the few words I was able to say in her language, although they were mostly numbers, and she saw that I understood something about the soft playfulness of bargaining. We shook our heads in disagreement over the price; then, immediately, we made another offer and then another shake of the head. She was so pleased that unexpectedly, she accepted the last offer I made. But it was too soon. The price was too low. She was being too generous and wouldn't make enough money. I moved quickly and picked up two more skirts and paid for all three at the price set; that way I was able to pay her three times as much before she had a chance to lower the price for the larger purchase. She smiled openly then, and, for the first time in months, my spirit lifted. I almost felt happy. The feeling stayed with me while she wrapped the skirts in a newspaper and handed them to me. When I left, though, the feeling left, too. It was as though it stayed behind in marketplace. I left tears in my throat. I wanted to cry. I didn't, of course. I have learned to defend myself against what is hard; without knowing it, I have also learned to defend myself against what is soft and what should be easy. I get up, light a candle and want to look at the skirts. They are still in the newspaper that the woman wrapped them in. I remove the paper, and raise the skirts up to look at them again before Ipack them. Something falls to floor. I reach down and feel something cool in my hand. I move close to the candlelight to see what I have. There are five long silk ribbons in my hand, all different colors. The woman in the marketplace! She has given these ribbons to me! There is no defense against a generous spirit, and this time I cry, and very hard, as if I could make up for all the months that I didn't cry.

A.she had learned to stay cool and unfeeling
B.she was afraid of crying in public

A
根据第八段中的“I have learned to defend myself against what is hard;without knowing it,I have also learned to defend myself against what is soft and what should be easy(我学会了抗拒困难,不知不觉中,我也学会了不被温柔和轻松俘获)”可知,作者没有哭是因为她已经学会控制自己的情绪不会轻易受到影响,所以选A.

A.she suddenly felt very sad.
B.she liked the ribbons so much.

TEXT C The National Trust in Britain, together with similar voluntary organizations, plays an increasingly important part in the preservation for public enjoyment of the best that is left unspoiled of the British countryside. Although the Trust has received practical and moral support from the government, it is not a rich government, supported by public taxes. It is a voluntary association of people who care for the unspoiled countryside and the ancient sites to preserve them for the permanent enjoyment of the public. It is a charity, which depends for its existence on voluntary support from members of the public. It has 160,000 members in England, Wales and Northern Ireland who pay a small subscription each year, and its primary duties are to protect for the nation places of great natural beauty and places of historical interest and preserve them from the dangers of modem development and extinction. The attention of the public was first drawn to the dangers threatening the great old houses and castles of Britain by the late Lord Lothian, who in 1935 said that, as a result of taxation and estate duty, most of these ancient houses were under sentence of death. When he died he left his great seventh century house and all its contents to the Trust Together with 4,500-acre park and estate surrounding it. This gift attracted wide publicity and it started the Trust's "Country House Scheme". Under the scheme, with the cooperation of the government and thanks to the generosity of the general public, the Trust has been able to save and make accessible to the public about one hundred and fifty of these old houses, together with often very valuable contents. Whenever possible, the Trust seeks to maintain continuity and to preserve these as living realities rather than as dead museums. It is the view of the Trust that the families who give them to the nation and whose ancestors created them make the best possible curators. In addition to country houses and open spaces the Trust now owns some examples of ancient wind and water mills, gardens, Roman antiquities, farms and small villages, cultural parks, as well as complete villages. In these villages no one is allowed to build, develop or disturb the old village environment and all houses completely maintain their original sixteenth-century style. The public definitely has free access to these areas and is only asked to respect the peace, beauty and wildlife. The preservation was part of history of Britain, and is now practiced by its organization, certainly will be carried on in the future, therefore, those cultural and historical relics will exist forever as long as people care for the environment in which they are living, both natural and cultural.
1. What is the possible meaning of "subscription" in the first paragraph?

TEXT D Is there any evidence that the standard of English as a foreign language has improved in the years since the Second World War? Naturally, as it is the world language, more and mere people are taught it and use it. But do they speak it or write it or understand it better than their patents' or grandparents' generations? Have standards declined? There is no objective way of answering this question. Tests of the traditional sort— compositions, pr6cis writing, and so on—have always been subjective, so they cannot be used to judge whether people have got better or not over the years. But so-called objective tests are useless as a measure of progress too. They have not been used consistently in the same "concentration" over the period they have been in use, so there is no way of comparing exams "now" and "then". Moreover, usually in the form of multiple choice questions, they do not, by and large, test the things that really count in mastering a language. Even comprehension is a partly "creative" activity in real life, as we have to think of possible meanings for ourselves rather than have them suggested for us from outside. And people can be trained in the techniques of multiple choice, while others fail the tests because they have been led astray precisely by their "suggestive" nature, so they are not really objective at all. We are left with only personal impression to go on. My own is that, if anything, standards have declined somewhat in the last thirty or forty years, despite all the new theories, tools and techniques that have been developed. I am not alone in this judgment In Sweden, for instance, Professors Johannes Hedberg and Gu.slav Kofien, two of the most experienced workers in the field; have on several occasions drawn attention to the lack of progress in the teaching of foreign languages since the late fifties. Yet Sweden is a sophisticated society with extremely high educational and academic standards, and very concerned not to be cut off from the rest of the world. If such a country cannot achieve advances in the study of foreign languages, it is unlikely that many, if any, others have done so. Japan is another community where remarkably little progress has been made in the learning of English. It is probably as important for Japan as for Sweden to master that language, and there is much academic effort put into linguistic research of various kinds. Yet the average standard of language learning is abysmally low, particularly for such a highly literate and educated society. This is no doubt in part the result of a vicious circle: many of the professors of English at Japanese universities are themselves incapable of speaking or writing or even understanding the language well.
1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Multiple choice questions are objective because people cannot be trained any techniques.
B.Sweden emphasizes the teaching of English without paying attention to other countries.
C.We have to depend on our own impression to judge the English standards.
D.Compositions are useful to test people's English ability because people have to write out their viewpoints.

1. Celebrity Worship You are to write in three parts. In the first part, state specifically what your idea is. In the second part, provide one or two reasons to support your idea OR describe your idea. In the last part, bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary. Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the instructions may result in a loss of marks.
[范文] Celebrity Worship Nowadays the fever of celebrity worship is in its rising and never shows the symptom of abating, and it's especially true for the youth. It's an interesting and provoking phenomenon, worth our attention. As a whole, our society is not as homogeneous as it once was. It seems like people need something to fulfill them the way belief once did. Celebrity worship is a way of escaping the pressure. In their eyes, heroes can do things the average person would like to do but often can't. Involved in the lives of the celebrities, they temporarily forget all about their own problems and frustrations, and feel encouraged. However, the result is that few seem to care about achievement, and fame is the only objective. Everyone wants to be famous, because you are not considered success unless you are famous. Celebrity worship is the twisted substitute of the true heroes admiration. There comes the misconception of success. Their focus of attention is no more than the superficial glory in the spotlight; while neglect the essential conditions to success, the persistence and determination, which is the most value we should get from the celebrities. To admire the celebrities is necessary and beneficial to our career, but our focus shall be on the essence of being a hero, their endurance, down-to-earth attitude, and design of life instead of only the glory. Otherwise the dream is merely a daydream and a castle in the air.
