What 3G Brings to the Campus
[范文] What 3G Brings to the Campus With the employment of 3G networks by the telecommunication service providers, the functions of mobile phones are greatly enriched. Besides phone calls and messages, video calls, broadband Internet service and TV programs are also what 3G networks can offer. As the advocates of almost all the new inventions and technology, college students will surely welcome the coming of 3G networks. Putting the price of the phones and the monthly service fees aside, they will love the idea of holding a 3G phone in hand. In my opinion, I really suggest they have a second thought. As students, we don't have so many contacts to contact with and so much time to surf on the Internet. Watching TV is also a luxurious hobby since our time is so valuable. Science and technology will keep up the high speed of development and there's no way that we can always be at the front. It will be very wise for us not to be always in fashion, but to choose what we do need.

Tips for the Solo Traveler When it comes to traveling, sometimes taking a journey alone can be great. Traveling solo allows for a time of introspection (内省), relaxation and self-discovery, when you can take the time to soak in the finer things the world has to offer. The independence gained by going alone allows for the opportunity to experience your choice destination exactly the way you want. Planning Your Trip (1) Where to stay So you've finally decided to take advantage of some well-earned vacation time and visit Prague, the city of your dreams. Because you'll be all by yourself, the planning of your trip is automatically different. One of the first questions worth addressing is how you're going to spend your time in the beautiful Czech Republic capital. Are you going on a shoestring (用钱极少的) budget, or would you rather go all-out and book a room in a fancy hotel? Because traveling alone means your money is funding the trip, a wise choice would be to stay in youth hostels. Cast away the misconception that these places are unaccommodating and dirty, and accept the fact that hostels provide safe, clean, comfortable, and most importantly, cheap housing that millions of students and thrifty travelers take advantage of every year. It is relatively easy to book a room at a hostel via the Internet, and plenty of information is available about each one. On the other hand, if you can't wait to take advantage of room service and a nice bath tub, opt for a hotel. (2) Have a plan Along with securing your accommodations, prepare an itinerary (行程表) for each day before you leave. This plan should include everything from visiting 'all the famous landmarks to some relaxation time, which is essential since you'll likely be walking for miles in your comfortable shoes(invest in a good pair, it will pay off). As great as organization is, however, you may. at times, not be able to follow your plan to leave room for some spontaneity (自发性) on your trip. Herein lies the beauty of traveling alone: You are your own master, and while preparation is key, there is always room for a change. Important Info Prior to Takeoff One of the hardest parts of traveling in general is coming up with a list of what you'll need to bring with you (or leave behind). Thinking of these all-important items becomes all the more difficult (and necessary) when you have no one else to rely on. (1) Carry a dictionary If you're heading for a foreign country, don't leave home without a bilingual (双语的) dictionary. Although a strong grasp of Czech will prove quite difficult, it is still important to learn phrases like "thank you", "hello", "please" and "I don't know she charged money for her time", in case you're in a disadvantageous situation. (2) Make copies of documents Make a copy of all essential travel documents such as your passport and health insurance to leave behind with someone you trust, in the event of an emergency. (3) Bring a credit card Along with cash, bring a credit card as an emergency method of payment and make sure to take note of your credit card company's customer service line in case of loss or theft. That way, you can cancel your card immediately and have a new one delivered to you while on your trip (if possible). (4) Pack pleasure items A book to enjoy on a train ride or on the beach, a journal to record your experiences, and maps to educate yourself on the layout of the land (you can get these from a tourism bureau), can make a world of a difference. With these things in mind and a positive mindset, you are now officially ready to set out on your own. Enjoy the Trip (1) Finally There You've taken the big step, said goodbye to family and friends, endured a long plane ride, and are finally in the place you dreamed of visiting.., until now. You might be quite overwhelmed by our new surroundings, but there are ways to control these feelings of over-stimulation. Instead of being an outsider looking in, try to transform yourself into a relaxed traveler who is not deterred by minor setbacks, such as long lines at the train station or delays in visiting hours of certain landmarks. If you planned accordingly, then you can afford to "waste" time at the busy tourist hotspots. Besides, you're on vacation, and have nowhere to be! Another benefit of traveling alone is the ability to explore museums and engage in other time-consuming activities. There is no pressure to rush through exhibits or cut the visit short; pace yourself and take in the masterpieces, whether you're an art lover or just an admirer. (2) Getting around Make an effort to walk everywhere--within reason, of course. This will help you get in touch with the area (so to speak) and observe the locals in their element. Using your legs also allows you to find attractively old-fashioned shops and cafes more easily than if you were on some splendid tour bus. Your goal should be to blend in, something a planned (and perhaps overpriced) tour won't likely offer. Wear loose, light clothing because the more comfortable you feel, the more willing you will be to stay out an extra hour to explore a section you might have overlooked. Remain enthusiastic, relaxed and prepared, and the stories you will have to share upon your return will be priceless. Extra Tips: Bring along a camera with lots of films. Leave your itinerary with someone at home, along with the numbers of each place you're staying at. It's okay if your plans are not so detailed, but if there is a big change in your plans, you might want to email the new information to your "in case of emergency" person back home. Stay safe and keep an eye out when it comes to money or your belongings; you don't have a companion to catch the pickpocket creeping up from behind. While "carpe diem (及时行乐)" is important, so is safety. Be carefree, but don't throw caution to the wind.

[解析] 26-28 Bushfires in southeastern Australia have killed 108 people and the authorities are warning that the number of victims could increase as outbreaks continue to burn out of control. Giant walls of flame have destroyed hundreds of homes, forests and farmland in the country's worst ever wildfire disaster. Witnesses recount seeing trees explode and the sky raining ash as temperatures reach 47 degrees Celsius. Up to 400 fires raged around the southern city of Melbourne, devouring hundreds of homes and vast areas of forest and farmland. There are concerns that entire towns may have been lost. Charred bodies have been found in cars. It is thought many of the victims had tried to escape the attack only to be overcome by its sheer speed. Many communities have seen whole streets reduced to smoking ruins, with piles of blackened bricks and iron roofing sheets twisted in the heat, while burned-out cars littered the roadside. Touring the devastated region, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said he was "absolutely horrified" by the disaster. Thousands of exhausted volunteer firefighters are still battling dozens of uncontrolled outbreaks in Victoria, although conditions have eased considerably in the past 18 hours. (26)Australian government officials said the army would be deployed to help out, and officials have announced immediate emergency aid of seven million dollars. (27) Australia's deadliest fires were in 1983, when blazes killed 75 people and destroyed more than 3 000 homes in Victoria and South Australia. [解析] 29-32 Is your family interested in buying a dog? A dog can be a happy addition to your family, (29)but if you choose the wrong kind of dog, the consequences can cause you a lot of trouble. Families should sit down and thoroughly discuss the problems involved before buying a dog. Even if the children in your family are the ones who want the dog, (30)the parents are the ones who are really responsible for seeing that the animal is properly cared for. (31)If you don't know much about dogs, it's a good idea to go to the library or the ASPCA(The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) for books about various kinds of dogs, as well as books about how to train a puppy. Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.
[解析] 33-35 People enjoy talking about trips, but what are the reasons they leave home? (33)One reason is for education. People travel because they want to broaden their horizons to learn about other people and other places. They are curious about other cultures. When people are tourists, they get a quick look at different ways of living. Even a short look at another kind of lifestyle is an important lesson. On a trip, a person can learn directly--by visiting museums and historic spots. (34)What does a tourist learn who sees the art museums, visits the historical palaces and other scenic spots in Paris, and shops along the River Seine? He gets a vivid picture--a real-life one--of the French people. He learns about their attitudes, how they feel about business, beauty, and history. What about the tourist who goes to Hong Kong? Does he get the same information that he could get from a book? He might read that Hong Kong is crowded, that there is less than 200 square meters of space for each person, but seeing and feeling the lack of space will (35)impress him much more. He might read that there are nearly 200 vehicles for every kilometer of roadway, but the sight of so many vehicles parked along the roadside will be (35)a much more vivid lesson. The tourist to Hong Kong will never forget the contrasts--the straight vertical lines of the tall modern buildings and the moving lines of boats that people live in. 33.Why do people leave home to travel according to the passage?
One reason is for education."
9.
A.There are 200 vehicles for every kilometer of roadway.
B.It has a dense population.
C.There are many museums and palaces.
D.It has many towering buildings.
A B C D

What does the passage tell us about traveling?
本题关键句为"impress him much more, a much more vivid lesson",从四个选项的核心词来看,只有B)中knowledge与短文的education相符。另外在短文对Paris和Hong Kong的描述中使用了诸如impress him much more、a much more ivid lesson此类的描述。
Section C Directions: In this section, you will hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks numbered from 36 to 43 with the exact words you have just heard. For blanks numbered from 44 to 46 you are required to fill in the missing information. For these blanks, you can either use the exact words you have just heard or write down the main points in your own words. Finally, when the passage is read for the third time, you should check what you have written. What's the furthest you have ever cycled? Perhaps you cycle to school or to work, or maybe at 1 a short cycling trip with friends? How would you 2 about spending months on the road traveling 3 from the UK to China, by bike? For British 4 Pete Jones, camping rough and cycling long distances through 5 land are second nature. Mr. Jones is currently 6 a long and difficult trip across the Eurasian 7 from Britain to China. Pete Jones is no 8 to China. But he says many people there 9 . Indeed, while there are an estimated 400 million bicycles in China, where it has long been the preferred form of transport, rapid economic growth has fuelled an explosive expansion in car ownership. Edward Genochio, another British cyclist who completed a 41 000km trip to China and back, said 10 . In the UK, the last few years have seen a rise in the number of people choosing two wheels over four, 11 . Politicians also see cycling as a way to boost their eco-images, with people such as London mayor Boris Johnson often riding to work.

[解析] estimates, number, cycling, doubled
Part Ⅳ Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth)
Section A Drections: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once. A device to "sleep on it" could be well founded, scientists say. After a good night's sleep, a problem that seemed insurmountable(不能克服的) the night before can often appear more 1 , although the evidence until now has been anecdotal(轶事的,趣闻的). But 2 at the University of Luebek in Germany have designed an experiment that shows a good night's sleep can 3 insight and problem-solving. Dr. Jan Born, a neuroscientist at the university, and his team taught volunteers two simple rules to help them 4 a string of numbers into a new order. There was also a third, 5 rule, which could help them increase their speed in solving the problem. The researchers divided the volunteers into two groups, half were allowed to sleep after the training while the 6 were forced to stay awake. They noticed that the group that had slept after the training were twice as 7 to figure out the third rule as the other group. "You have a memory representation in your brain of the problem you want to solve, and then you sleep. Sleep can act on the problem." Born said in a telephone interview. But he also admitted that how 8 of memories occurs or what governs it is still unknown. Other scientists say the 9 evidence supports the anecdotal suggestions that sleep can 10 creative thinking. Although the role of sleep in human creativity will still be a mystery, the research gives people good reason to fully respect their periods of sleep. A. hidden F. manageable K) much B. still G. complex L) restructuring C. professors H) prevent M) convert D. remainder I) researchers N) improve E. strengthen J) stimulate O) likely
Section B Directions: There are 2 Passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Passage One The very high temperatures attained in a nuclear explosion result in the formation of an extremely hot intense mass of gas called a fireball. For a l0-kiloton (千吨,核弹当量单位) explosion in the air, the fireball will attain a maximum diameter of about 300m; for a l0-megaton (兆吨,核弹当量单位) weapon the fireball may be 4.8 km across. A flash of heat radiation is emitted from the fireball and spreads out over a large area, but with steadily decreasing intensity. The amount of heat energy received a certain distance from the nuclear explosion depends on the power of the weapon and the state of the atmosphere. If the visibility is poor or the explosion takes place above clouds, the effectiveness of the heat flash is decreased. The heat radiation falling on exposed skin can cause what called flash burns. A 10-kiloton explosion in the air can produce moderate (second-degree) flash burns, which require some medical attention, as far as 2.4 km from ground zero; for a 10-megaton bomb, the corresponding distance would be more than 32 km. milder burns of bare skin would be experienced even farther out. Most ordinary clothing provides protection from the heat radiation, as does almost any opaque (不透明的) object. Flash burns occur only when the bare skin is directly exposed, or if the clothing is too thin to absorb the heat radiation. The heat radiation can start fires in dry, flammable materials, for example, paper and some fabrics, and such fires may spread if conditions are suitable. The evidence from the A-bomb explosions over Japan indicates that many fires, especially in the area near ground zero, originated from secondary causes, such as electrical short circuits, broken gas lines, and upset furnaces and boilers in industrial plants. The blast damage produced wreckage that helped to maintain the fires and denied access to fire-fighting equipment. Thus, much of the fire damage in Japan was a secondary effect to the blast wave. Under some conditions, such as existed at Hiroshima but not at Nagasaki, many individual fires can combine to produce a fire storm similar to those that accompany some large forest fires. The heat of the fire causes a strong updraft (向上排气), which produces strong winds drawn in toward the center of the burning area. These winds fan the flame and convert the area into a disaster in which everything flammable is destroyed.
1. It can be inferred that amount of radiation______.
A.is the greatest when atomic bomb is dropped from the air
B.is the weakest when it spreads over a large area
C.is the greatest when the atomic bomb goes off on the ground
D.becomes increasingly weak as it travels far out
A B C D
D
A flash of heat radiation is emitted from the fireball and spreads out over a large area, but with steadily decreasing intensity.
2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Any amount of the radiation is deadly for a person.
B.Any kind of opaque clothes can protect a person from atomic bomb.
C.A second-degree flash burn may not be so dangerous to life.
D.Thin clothes usually catch fire easily from heat radiation.
A B C D
C
Most ordinary clothing provides protection from the heat radiation, as does almost any opaque object. Flash burns occur only when the bare skin is directly exposed, or if the clothing is too thin to absorb the heat radiation.
3. According to the passage, which is most likely the greatest danger with an atomic bomb?
A.The direct exposure to heat radiation.
B.The fast spread of the fireball.
C.The absorption of heat in the clothing.
D.The secondary effect to the blast wave.
A B C D
D
Thus, much of the fire damage in Japan was a secondary effect to the blast wave.
4. The example of Hiroshima is given to______.
A.give the readers a clear image of the explosion of atomic bombs
B.to show that the explosion of atomic bombs can lead to forest fires
C.to illustrate the secondary effect of the atomic bomb
D.to explain why the damages are different at Hiroshima and Nagasaki
A B C D
C
Thus, much of the fire damage in Japan was a secondary effect to the blast wave和第三段第一句such as existed at Hiroshima but not at Nagasaki, many individual fires can combine to produce a fire storm similar to those that accompany some large forest fires.
5. According to the passage, a fire storm______.
A.is often seen when large forest fires break out.
B.often occurs after the atomic explosions
C.produces forces that draw everything into the fire
D.is a disaster that can destroy everything in the area
A B C D
A
[解析] 由题干中的a fire storm定位到最后一段a fire storm similar to those that accompany some large forest fires. The heat of the fire causes a strong updraft, ... into a disaster in which everything flammable is destroyed.
Passage Two Most publishing is now "electronic" in the sense that books, magazines, and newspapers are prepared on computers, and exist as computer files before they are printed on paper. Often there are advantages to give readers access to the electronic versions of publications as well as, or even instead of, the printed versions. Print publications have lots of advantages. Paper is pleasant to handle, easy to read, and very portable. you can read it almost anywhere. On the other hand, print has its weaknesses. Paper is expensive, and articles are often cut to fit the space available. Printing and distributing paper is expensive and takes time. Printed materials are expensive to store and almost impossible to search. Electronic publishing offers solutions to all these problems. Suppose a publisher makes the electronic copy of a newspaper or magazine available from the net, perhaps on the Internet's World Wide Web. No paper is used and disc space is cheap, so Internet publishing costs very little. Articles don't have to be cut (though there is of course a limit to the amount people are willing to read online). Internet publishing is fast, and readers can access material as soon as it becomes available: within minutes, instead of the next day, next week or next month. Internet publishing goes beyond geographical boundaries: the humblest local paper can be read everywhere from New York to London to Delhi to Tokyo. Delivery costs are low because there are no newsagents to pay, and no postal charges: readers pick up the bills for their on-line sessions. Also, computer-based publications are simple to store (on disc) and every word can be searched electronically. At the moment, newspapers and magazines, TV and radio stations, news agencies and book publishers are making content freely available on the Web because they are competing for "mindshare". Perhaps they want to find out if they can attract and hold an audience online, or perhaps, they're afraid of missing out because "everyone else is doing it". But don't count on things staying that way: Publishers are not in business to lose money.
1. What does the author probably foresee?
A.Readers will have more accesses.
B.Books and newspapers will be kept as computer files.
C.It will not make any sense to keep the printed versions.
D.Electronic publications will replace printed ones.
A B C D
D
Often there are advantages to give readers access to the electronic versions of publications as well as, or even instead of, the printed versions.
2. Which of the following is among the troubles print has?
A.It is dear to find printed materials.
B.Frequent editing is needed for better layout.
C.Paper is passed around quickly.
D.The space to restore articles is not enough.
A B C D
B
Paper is expensive, and articles are often cut to fit the space available.
3. Which of the following is the possible disadvantage of electronic versions of publications?
A.It cannot be carried around easily.
B.It can be read from many places worldwide.
C.It can be accessed immediately after issued.
D.It requires little delivery cost and time.
A B C D
A
Paper is pleasant to handle, easy to read, and very portable: you can read it almost anywhere.
4. Why are publishers making their books freely available?
A.Because they want to make more money.
B.Because they do not like to lose audience.
C.Because they are competing in a match.
D.Because they try to win more freedom.
A B C D
B
[解析] 由题干中的making their books freely available定位到第四段第一、二句because they are competing for "mindshare".Perhaps they want to find out if they can attract and hold an audience online, or perhaps, they're afraid of missing out because "everyone else is doing it".
5. Why does the author say "publishers are not in business to lose money"?
A.For convincing readers that the publishing is a profitable business.
B.For persuading people to donate when they read the free content online.
C.For warning the readers that the free stuff online may not last forever.
D.For making people trust that paper publications won't be totally gone.
A B C D
C
[解析] 由题干中的publishers are not in business to lose money定位到最后一段末句。
