Part Ⅰ Vocabulary and Structure Directions:There are 15 incomplete sentences in this part. You are required to complete each one by deciding on the most appropriate word or words from the 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Then you should write the letter in the corresponding space on the Answer Sheet.
1. We ended the dinner up ______ fruit and coffee.
A.at
B.by
C.in
D.with
A B C D
D
[解析] end up in...与end up with... 结束”之意,但是end up in... The project ended up in failure。而end up with...
2. He sent his son to ______ a towel from the bathroom.
3. I couldn't help ______ sorry for the poor man who died in the car crash.
A.feeling
B.feel
C.to feel
D.felt
A B C D
A
[解析] can't help doing sth.和can't help but do sth.都可以表示“不得不、禁不住做某事”,而can't help to do sth.
4. The village ______ I was born and grew up is quite far from here.
A.what
B.where
C.which
D.that
A B C D
B
I was born and grew up中充当地点状语,即I was born and grew up at the village。
5. Anyone seen carrying bags, boxes, ______ whatever, was stopped by the police.
6. This novel is really worth ______ at least twice.
A.reading
B.to read
C.of reading
D.be read
A B C D
A
它的用法是sth. is worthy to be done或sth. is worthy of being done以及sb. be worthy of doing sth.或sb. be worthy to do sth.。
12. It is the first time I ______ a holiday abroad.
A.take
B.took
C.have taken
D.had taken
A B C D
C
It is/was/will be the first time that... It is the first time that...
13. It is necessary to examine this claim ______ we proceed any further.

1. If you work from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm every day, which schools will you choose? ______
A.Global English Center and Modern Language School.
B.Global English Center and International House of English.
C.Modern Language School and the 21st Century English Training Center.
D.The 21st Century English Training Center and the International House of English.
A B C D
B
选项A的Global English Center and Modern Language School的后者不提供晚间课程选项;C的Modern Language School and the 21st Century English Training Center的两所学校都不提供晚间课程;选项D的The 21st Century English Training Center and the International House of English中的前者不提供晚间课程。
2. The 21st Century English Training Center is different from the other 3 schools in that ______.
A.it requires an entrance examination
B.it is nearest to the city center
C.its courses are more advanced
D.its teaching quality is better
A B C D
A
选项B的it is nearest to the city center并不准确,因为“全球英语培训中心”也离市中心近;选项C的its courses are more advanced在学校的介绍里并没有特别提及;选项D的its teaching quality is better在所有的学校介绍里都没有体现出来。
3. You'll probably prefer to go to the International House of English because it ______.
A.costs less than other schools
B.offers more sightseeing and social activities
C.has British teachers
D.has a special course in spoken English
A B C D
D
In an analysis of reports from 42 countries, U. S. researchers found that married people are consistently happier than singletons. The effect is small, but that still begs the question: Does marriage make you happy, or are happy people simply more likely to get married? Both answers may be true. In a study that followed more than 30,000 Germans for 15 years, Diener and his colleagues found that happy people are more likely to get married and then stay married. But anyone can improve his or her mood by getting married. The effect begins about a year before the "happy day" and lasts for at least a year afterward. For most people, satisfaction levels do return to their baseline, but the researchers say this conceals (掩盖) the fact that a good marriage can have a permanent positive effect. Furthermore, people who are less happy to begin with will get a bigger boost from marriage. And it seems there's something special about signing that piece of paper: The research shows that you can't get as much benefit from simply cohabiting (同居). "My husband says that cohabiting couples lack the deeper security that comes with the formal band of gold, and that is why they are not quite so happy." says Oswald. "Insecurity, we know from all data, is bad for human beings."
4. The title of the passage is probably ______.
A.Single People
B.Married People
C.Marriage and Happiness
D.Band of Gold
A B C D
C
5. What keeps back the permanent positive effect of marriage? ______
A.The baseline of satisfaction.
B.A less happy beginning.
C.The concealment of reality.
D.A good marriage.
A B C D
A
For most people, satisfaction levels do return to their baseline, but the researchers say this conceals the fact that a good marriage can have a permanent positive effect(对于大多数人来说,满足的确回到了自己的底线,但是研究者说这掩盖了一个事实:一个好的婚姻能产生永久的积极效果),句中的this指代上文提到的satisfaction levels do return to their baseline,说明满足的底线隐藏了婚姻永久积极的作用,因此A项是正确答案。选项B的A less happy beginning,C项的The concealment of reality和D项的A good marriage均与题意不符。
6. The word "boost" in Paragraph 2 most probably means ______.
A.credit
B.happiness
C.improvement
D.reward
A B C D
C
根据文章第二段中的研究结果happy people are more likely to get married and then stay married(幸福的人很容易结婚并保持婚姻状态).But anyone can improve his or her mood by getting married(而且,不幸福的人也会从婚姻中得到改善)表明,任何人都可以通过结婚改变他或她的性情。因此,文章第二段的最后一句people who are less happy to begin with will get a bigger boost from marriage就表示“有更大的改进”。
7. According to the passage, what will do harm to human beings? ______
A.Keeping single.
B.Insecurity.
C.Dissatisfaction.
D.Cohabitation.
A B C D
B
以题干do harm to human beings为信息词。 Insecurity, we know from all data, is bad for human beings(我们从所有的数据中了解到,没有安全感对所有人都是糟糕的),与信息词意思一致,insecurity对人类有不良的影响。
When we talk about intelligence, we do not mean the ability to get a good score on a certain test, or even the ability to do generally well at school. By intelligence we mean a style of life, a way of behaving in various situations. The true test of intelligence is not how much we know how to do, but how we behave when we don't know what to do. The intelligent person, young or old, meeting a new situation or problem, opens himself up to it. He tries to take it with mind and senses everything he can about it. He thinks about it, instead of about himself or what it might cause to happen to him. If he fails to master it, he looks without fear or shame at his mistakes and learns what he can from them. This is intelligence. Clearly its roots lie in a certain feeling about life. Just as clearly, unintelligence is not what most psychologists seem to suppose, the same thing as intelligence, only less of it. It is an entirely different style of behavior, out of entirely different set of attitudes. Years of watching and comparing bright children with the not-bright or less bright have shown that they are very different kinds of people. The bright child is curious about life and reality, eager to get in touch with it, and unite himself with it. There is no wall between himself and life. On the other hand, the dull child is far less curious, far less interested in what goes on and what is real. The bright child likes to experiment, to try things out. He lives by the maxim (格言) that there is more than one way to skin a cat. If he can't do something one way, he'll try another. The dull child is usually afraid to try at all. It takes a great deal of urging to get him to try even once; if that try fails, he is through. Nobody starts off stupid. Hardly an adult in a thousand or ten thousand could in any three years of his life learn as much, grow as much in his understanding of the world around him, as every child learns and grows in his first three years. But what happens, as we grow older, to this extraordinary capacity for leaning and intellectual growth? What happens is that it is destroyed, and more than by anything else, it is destroyed by the process that we misname education—a process that goes on in most homes and schools.
8. The writer believes that intelligence is ______.
A.doing well on some examinations
B.being an excellent student at school
C.knowing quickly how to solve a problem
D.a certain positive type of behavior or attitude
A B C D
D
选项A中的doing well on some examinations和选项B中的being an excellent student at school是人们一般意义上的intelligence。 选项C的knowing quickly how to solve a problem在本文中并没有提到。选项D的a certain positive type of behavior or attitude(一种积极、乐观的行为方式及态度)与文章第一段第二句By intelligence we mean a style of life, a way of behaving in various situations(我们所说的智慧是一种生活方式,一种在不同情况下的行为方式)基本一致,同时第二段中It is an entirely different style of behavior, out of entirely different set of attitudes(这是一种完全不同的行为风格,出于完全不同的态度)和第四句If he fails to master it, he looks without fear or shame at his mistakes and learns what he can from them. This is intelligence则说明了positive。
9. The passage tells us that ______.
A.a bright child gives up easily
B.a bright child is open-minded
C.an unintelligent child is never reluctant to try
D.an unintelligent child knows little about himself
A B C D
B
选项A中的a bright child gives up easily与文章中第三段第二句的The bright child is curious及第三段第五句的The bright child likes to experiment, to try things out相悖;选项C中an unintelligent child is never reluctant to try与文章第三段最后两句The dull child is usually afraid to try at all. It takes a great deal of urging to get him to try even once; if that try fails, he is through相比较可以看出两者之间也是相对立的;选项D中an unintelligent child knows little about himself则在文章中没有提及。 The intelligent person, young or old, meeting a new situation or problem, opens himself up to it(聪明的人无论老少,遇上新的情况或问题时会敞开胸怀,是开明的)和文章第三段的The bright child is curious about life and reality, eager to get in touch with it, and unite himself with it. There is no wall between himself and life都表明了选项B中的a bright child is open-minded(聪明的孩子是思想开明的、豁达的)含义。
10. Which of the following statements has a similar meaning to the maxim"There's more than one way to skin a cat."? ______
A.Make hay while the sun shines.
B.If at first you succeed, keep trying again.
C.If at first you don't succeed, try, try, and try again.
D.Make new friends and keep the old; one is silver and the other is gold.
A B C D
C
There's more than one way to skin a cat作为信息词,根据上下文推出这个句子的含义。 选项A的Make hay while the sun shines表示“趁热打铁”,与题意不符;选项B的If at first you succeed, keep trying again表示“成功了要再接再厉”,没有失败后不断尝试的意思;选项D的Make new friends and keep the old; one is silver and the other is gold表示“结交新朋友,不忘老朋友,前者是银,后者是金。” If at first you don't succeed, try, try, and try again则与文章中第三段中的If he can't do something one way, he'll try another(如果他不能以一种方式来做某事,他会尝试另一种)的意思一致,表明聪明孩子失败后会不断尝试的做法。
11. The writer says that education is misnamed because it ______.
A.discourages intellectual growth
B.takes place more at home than at school
C.fails to help dull children with their problems
D.only helps bright children understand the world around them
A B C D
A
但其后期发展就与教育相关...it is destroyed by the process that we misname education(被我们误称的教育摧毁了成长的过程)与选项A中的discourages intellectual growth(阻碍了智力的成长)最为接近。 选项B的takes place more at home than at school表明早期教育主要是在家庭而非学校中进行的,这只是一个现实,其原因是教育方式的问题。选项C的fails to help dull children with their problems和选项D的only helps bright children understand the world around them在文章中都没有具体叙述,因此不能得出这样的结论。
What should you think about when trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects, you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs. Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct changes in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job. Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it, but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
12. What is the passage mainly about? ______
A.How to face one's weakness.
B.Advice on choosing a career.
C.The significance of working hard at school.
D.The direct and indirect value of school work.
A B C D
B
选项A的How to face one's weakness在文章中的确提到,但并没有展开讨论。选项C的The significance of working hard at school在文章中并没有阐述。选项D的The direct and indirect value of school work在文章中虽有所提到,但是没有做出任何明确、细致的说明。
13. According to the passage,doing a part-time job as a student ______.
A.can help afford one's education
B.is a good way to practice the skills learnt in school
C.can help you prepare for future work
D.is a waste of time that could have been spent on study
A B C D
C
以题干doing a part-time job as a student作为线索分析所给项。选项A中的can help afford one's education在文章中并没有涉及;选项B中的is a good way to practice the skills learnt in school只是业余兼职工作所获得的一个方面的作用,而且不是所有人都可以获得的;选项D中的is a waste of time that could have been spent on study在文中根本就没有提及。选项C中的can help you prepare for future work与文章第二段最后一句话you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job一致,说明做兼职对学生将来选择职业有帮助。
14. From the passage we learn that if a student's school performance is not good, he ______.
A.could restart his study in school
B.may also do well in his future work
C.will be regretful about the bad results he has got at school
D.should pay more attention to learning skills and developing abilities
A B C D
B
选项A中could restart his study in school在文章中并没有提到,而且一般情况下也不太可能重新开始学习生活。选项B中may also do well in his future work(在未来的工作中依然会做得很好)与文章结尾部分you will have a chance of a fresh start at work(你会有一个重新开始的机会)表述一致,也就意味着学习成绩不好的学生在将来的工作中也会干好自己的工作,所以选项B为正确答案。选项C中的will be regretful about the bad results he has got at school与文章中You should not be apologetic about it意义相反。选项D的 should pay more attention to learning skills and developing abilities在文中均没有提及。
15. The phrase "be all thumbs" in Paragraph 3 probably means ______.
A.be bored at doing things
B.be skillful in doing things
C.be interested in doing things
D.be awkward at doing things
A B C D
D
选项A的be bored at doing things(厌倦做事情)与上下文没有任何关系;选项B的be skillful in doing things(擅长做事情)与本段所要表达的内容无关,本段主要说明的是你的弱点;选项C的be interested in doing things(对做事有兴趣)与选项A正好相反,该内容在本段中也没有涉及。在第三段中,be all thumbs和它前后的词语poor speller, cannot add, face the weakness都在解释weak points,所以它们是近义词。You may be all thumbs when you handle tools的意思是“使用工具时笨手笨脚的”。
16. From the last paragraph we know that one should ______.
A.face one's own weak points wisely
B.study harder for a new school record
C.make full use of one's own weak points
D.feel sorry for one's own school record
A B C D
A
选项A的face one's own weak points wisely与本段内容一致,从该段第一句Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself可以得知,面对自己的弱点也是了解自己的一个方面,并告知读者对自己的弱点不要假装没看到,因此正确答案为A项。选项B的study harder for a new school record在文中没有提及。选项C的make full use of one's own weak points文中也没有提及,而且文中提出对待弱点应该是正视而非利用。选项D中的feel sorry for one's own school record则与文章中作者表达的观点正好相反。 You should not be apologetic about it(你应该承认自己的弱点)。
Mandy Naylor writes an e-mail about her progress so far working as a social worker in Kazakhstan: "Things are going well. There have been some real high points and some times when I've felt totally inadequate and thought VSO had wasted a whole load of money and time on me! But I've never doubted that this was the right place and thing for me to do. I've made some great friends both with volunteers who are off in many different regions of Kazakhstan and some lovely local people. As for work-we have just come back from the cold North of Kazakhstan from a conference and I will go back next year to lecture with my counterparts and hopefully, parents and disabled children, on the new social work course that we are busy developing. We are also looking at developing services for parents and children within the centre and a few funding bids will be submitted for that. I've also made good links with DIFID and the British Embassy and we're looking to submit a big funding bid for a National Children's Rights Project. It's a great achievement to have been able to ensure that a project like that gets started. I'm busy and generally happy. I am running a British club at work that has 32 members. And I'm just about to start a women's self-defence group. Every day is a challenge and I quite often feel exhausted. I'm not doing too badly with the language either! Kazakhstan is beautiful and where I am based is well developed. It's cold but quite mild compared with the rest of Kazakhstan. The mountains really are very beautiful and I am going to the large outdoor ice skating park tomorrow with friends from work."
17. How did Mandy Naylor think of her work in Kazakhstan? ______
A.She sometimes doubted her choice.
B.She thought it was well-paid.
C.She enjoyed her work very much.
D.She often felt totally inadequate.
A B C D
C
根据第二段第一句Things are going well... But I've never doubted that this was the right place and thing for me to do. I've made some great friends both with volunteers who are off in many different regions of Kazakhstan and some lovely local people. She enjoyed her work very much。 选项A的She sometimes doubted her choice与文章的第二段陈述正好相反。选项B的She thought it was well-paid在文中没有提及。
18. What is Mandy Naylor busy doing in Kazakhstan now? ______
A.Attending a conference in the North of Kazakhstan.
B.Trying to raise a big funding for children.
C.Preparing for a new social work course.
D.Making great friends with volunteers.
A B C D
C
解题的关键在于第四段第一句...and I will go back next year to lecture with my counterparts and hopefully, parents and disabled children, on the new social work course that we are busy developing. 选项A的Attending a conference in the North of Kazakhstan与文章不符,她已经从哈萨克斯坦北部开会回来了。选项B的Trying to raise a big funding for children是她准备要做的事情而不是正在做的事。选项D的Making great friends with volunteers在文章中并没有提到这件事,因此也不是正确的。
19. Which of the following does Mandy Naylor hope to establish? ______
A.VSO.
B.DIFID.
C.A women's self-defence group.
D.National Children's Rights Project.
A B C D
D
We are also looking at developing services for parents and children within the centre and a few funding bids will be submitted for that.以及该段倒数第二句...we're looking to submit a big funding bid for a National Children's Rights Project.
20. From the passage we can find that Mandy Naylor's work has much to do with ______.
A.women and children
B.club members
C.volunteers in Kazakhstan
D.parents and children
A B C D
A
全文多次提到她的工作内容,developing services for parents and children, a big funding bid for a National Children's Rights Project以及to start a women's self-defence group。
Part Ⅲ Cloze Directions:There is a passage in this part with 10 blanks in it. Read the passage carefully and then choose the most the appropriate answer from the 4 choices marked A, B, C, andD, Then you should write the letter in the corresponding space on the Answer Sheet. I teach economics at UCLA. Last Monday in class, I 1 asked my students how their weekend had been. One young man said that it had not been so good. Then he proceeded to ask me why I always seemed to be so cheerful. His question 2 me of something I'd read somewhere before: "Every morning when you get up, you have a 3 about how you want to approach life that day," I said. "I choose to be cheerful." Then I told them a story. One day I was 4 to the college I taught in at Henderson, 17 miles away from where I lived. When a quarter mile was left down the road to the college, my car died. I tried to start it again, but the engine wouldn't 5 . So I walked to the college. My secretary asked me what had happened. "This is my lucky day." I replied, smiling. "Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day?" She was 6 . "What do you mean?" "I live 17 miles from here." I replied. "My car could have broken down anywhere along the freeway. It didn't. 7 it broke down in the perfect place: off the freeway, within walking distance of the college. I'm still able to teach my class and get help from the tow truck. If my car was meant to break down today, it couldn't have been in a more convenient way." The secretary's eyes opened 8 , and then she smiled. I scanned the sixty faces before me. 9 it was a big crowd, no one made any noise. Somehow, my story had 10 them. In fact, it had all started with a student's observation that I was cheerful.
1.
A.nervously
B.carefully
C.cheerfully
D.eagerly
A B C D
C
[解析] 四个选项中副词的意思分别为nervously(紧张地),carefully(仔细地),cheerfully(欢快地,情绪高涨地),eagerly(渴望地)。从下文学生问这位教师why I always seemed to be so cheerful可以得知这位经济学教师通常都是十分愉快的。
2.
A.convinced
B.informed
C.reminded
D.warned
A B C D
C
[解析] 选项A的convince sb. of sth.
3.
A.choice
B.battle
C.discussion
D.lesson
A B C D
A
4.
A.cycling
B.driving
C.running
D.walking
A B C D
B
Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day可知,秘书对发生在教师身上的事,车坏了却说今天是幸运日,感到十分困惑不解,而不是其他三个选项所表达的意思。因此选项D的puzzled(迷惑的)为答案。
7.
A.Hence
B.Instead
C.Therefore
D.Thus
A B C D
B
My car could have broken down anywhere along the freeway. It didn't. ______, it broke down in the perfect place(我的车本来可能在高速公路上任何一个地方抛锚,但它没有,却停在最恰当的位置),前后两句的关系是对比关系可知,这位教师想表达的意思只有选项B的instead(相反地)符合题意,所以选项B为正确答案。
[解析] 根据句子结构分析,两个分句之间用的是逗号,说明该句中的it was a big crowd, no one made any noise前是需要一个连接词来表示与主句的关系的。
Part Ⅳ Word forms Directions: There are 10 incomplete sentences in this part. You should fill in each blank with the proper form of the word given in the brackets. Write the word in the corresponding space on the Answer Sheet.
1. She risked her life ______(try) to save the drowning child.
trying
2. It was her ______(philosopher) that people should help each other.
10. There was little point in continuing so ______(profitable) a dialogue.
unprofitable(或profitless)
因此,本题的正确答案为unprofitable(或profitless)。
PartⅤ Translation—English into Chinese Directions: This part is to test your ability to translate English into Chinese. There are 5 sentences in this part. Write your translation in the corresponding space on the Answer Sheet.
1. After becoming a member of the WTO, China will open more service areas step by step.
[解析] 本题翻译时要特别注意译WTO为“世贸组织”;becoming a member of译为“加入;成为其成员”;service areas意为“服务领域”;step by step意为“逐步地”。
2. Through taking care of pets, children can develop not only their practical skills but also their loving heart.
3. The road to business success is paved by those who continually strive to produce better products or service.
本题中要特别注意的是译出定语从句who continually strive to produce better products or service修饰those,译成“那些……
4. Good human relations can solve many problems, but poor human relations can make your life miserable.
此外要理解make your life miserable意为“让你的生活一团糟”。
5. When a customer is unhappy about the product or service that's been provided, a quick admission of error can work wonders.
和限制性定语从句that's been provided作定语修饰the product or service。 is unhappy about要译为“对……
Part Ⅵ Writing
1. Directions:This part is to test your ability to do practical writing. You are required to write a letter of invitation. You can refer to the following information in Chinese. You should write about 100 words on the Answer Sheet.
