Teaching and Learning Teaching is supposed to be a professional activity requiring long and complicated training as well as official certification. The act of teaching is looked upon as a flow of knowledge from a higher source to an empty container. The student's role is one of receiving information, while the teacher's is one of sending it. There is a clear distinction assumed between one who is supposed to know and another, usually, younger person who is supposed not to know. However, teaching needn't be the province of a special group of people nor need it be looked upon as a technical skill. Teaching can be more like guiding and assisting than forcing information into a supposedly empty head. If you have a certain skill, you should be able to share it with someone. You don't have to get certified to convey what you know to someone else or to help them in their attempt to teach themselves. [解析] Although twins have always been a source of curiosity, they are not so uncommon statistically, since they occur once in every 86 births. About one-third of all twins are identical, or single-egg twins. Identical twins have the same genes and, hence, the same sex, hair, eyes, blood type, and bone and tooth structure. Some identical twins are mirror images of each other. For example, one may be left-handed, the other right-handed. As young children, some identical twins may develop their own private language. Identical twins have an especially keen intuition, and they often seem to think and dress alike even when away from each other. In fact, even when they are separated at birth and raised apart, identical twins develop startling similarities. They may pursue the same careers, have the same interests, or die within days of each other. In contrast to identical twins, fraternal twins inherit a separate assortment of genes and are not necessarily of the same sex. In some families there is a hereditary tendency to produce fraternal twins, but identical twins occur at random in the population.

1. What is common to all the films produced in Hollywood?
A.Love.
B.Conflict.
C.Violence.
D.Mystery.
A B C D
B
[解析] Hollywood produces many different kinds of films, including mysteries, musicals, love stories and horror films. Different as these films may be, they generally have one thing in common—conflict. The main character wants something very badly and will do anything to get it. The opponent tries to stop the main character from achieving his goal. This opposition creates conflict, and conflict is the heart of drama. To give an example, let's say the main character is a young man of humble origin who wants to marry the beautiful daughter of a rich banker. The father thinks the young man is unworthy of his daughter, and he does not allow her to see him. The young man, who is very much in love, refuses to give up without a fight. The conflict between the young man and the girl's father is what makes the story interesting; it forces the main character to take action, and through their actions we see them as they really are. In a good story, the main character changes. He is not the same at the end of the story as he was at the beginning. He learns something from his experiences that makes him a different, perhaps better person. And we learn something from watching him. Good movies not only entertain us, they also help us understand a little more about life.
2. What usually happens to the main character in a good story?
A.He remains the same.
B.He dies in the end.
C.He achieves his goal.
D.He undergoes a change.

1. The cause of most of the divorce cases in the U.S. is
A.financial trouble in the family
B.women's need for freedom and independence
C.different attitudes to children's education
D.lack of democracy in the household
A B C D
D
[解析] In many homes, divorce is caused by the battle between the sexes. To understand the problem, one must remember the modern American woman is freed. During childhood and adolescence, the American girl is given freedom and education which is equal to a boy's. After completing school, she is able to get a job and support herself. She doesn't have to marry for financial security. She considers herself an independent, self-sufficient person. She wants a husband whom she can respect, but she doesn't want to be dominated by him. She wants a democratic household in which she has a voice in making decisions. When a husband and wife are able to share decision-making, their marriage is probably closer, stronger, and more satisfying. Otherwise, the couple is likely to end up in the divorce court. When a couple gets divorced, the court usually requires the man to pay his former wife a monthly sum of money. If the couple has children, they usually remain with the mother, and the father is expected to pay for their support. Although divorce is quite common in the United States, 80% of those who get divorced remarry. The remarriages allow thousands of people, especially children, to enjoy family life again, but at the same time many troubles have arisen. A well-known American joke tells of a wife calling to her second husband, "Quick, John! Come here and help me! Your children and my children are beating up our children!"

PART Ⅴ READING COMPREHENSION In this section there are several reading passages followed by twenty questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one you think is the correct answer. Mark your choice on your answer sheet.
TEXT A Everyone is familiar with the cry of the director who is about to shoot a scene for a new movie: "Quiet on the set!" is the command. When all is ready, the next order is "Action!" Then the actors begin to play their roles in the setting that has been made for them. Before they have gotten this far, however, great pains have been taken to set the scene just the way the director wants it. The reason such care is taken to set a scene is that the set ting must do a great deal for the viewers when the movie is completed. Think for a moment about a movie or television show you have seen recently. As soon as the show begins, you get some very distinct impressions. From the way people dress, the way they live, and the vehicles they ride in, you know at once where you are and if the story takes place in the present or in the past. If it's a bright, sunny day in a park, you will tend to feel bright and sunny yourself. But if clouds are lowering darkly over a cemetery, you will probably squat down and get set for a good scare. If you are shown a mansion in Texas, you will begin to think about what it's like to be rich. If the setting is a city slum, you will begin to think about the problems of the poor. So the setting does a number of things. It prepares a scene that allows you to believe you are really viewing a certain place at a certain time. The setting prepares you for the action that will take place. And because it makes you feel a certain way, the setting helps put you in the proper mood to appreciate that action. Setting also starts you thinking about important ideas that are presented through the movie.

TEXT B One of the mysteries of nature is animal communication. Creatures of the sea move through their liquid element without any hearable sound. Yet they are able to sense the silent passing or attack of others of their kind. This is because bodies moving in water create a pressure wave, something like a gust of wind produced by a passing automobile. A narrow sensor system running along each side of the shark, from eye to tail, receives and interprets these pressure waves. I have seen sharks appear swiftly, obviously drawn by the motion of a diver's hands, which had sent out strong waves. One might think it impossible to distinguish odors in water. Yet sharks, surprisingly, are able to follow a scent across miles of ocean and arrive at its exact source. A diver who spears a fish and attaches its bloody body to his belt, and then goes on with the hunt, be comes a natural prey to the shark. I have seen sharks follow a scent exactly like the dogs of a hunting pack. It is no wonder that the Greeks gave them the name "hounds of the sea." One of the most widely believed — and dangerous — legends about the shark is that he has poor eyesight. On the contrary, the shark is well equipped to see at a distance and to dis tinguish among forms. This fact was proved to me one day when I went into the water off the coast of Africa. I sighted a shark at some distance from me as I was floating at a very shallow depth. Since I was making no movement, the sound of bubbles from my diving appa- ratus would be confused with the light splashing of the water on a rock. I turned my eyes away for a few seconds, to study the design of a giant ray just beneath me. I am not sure now whether it was simple instinct or a feeling of movement, but I turned back abruptly to ward the location of the shark. And, immediately, every muscle of my body tensed. He was no more than 30 feet away, launched toward me as hard and swift as a missile. The sight of a shark coming at you head-on is strange. Obviously it is from this angle that he seems most frightening-the very symbol of evil, with the half-opened mouth and the three regularly spaced fins (鳍). When the shark had approached to within two feet of the rubber fins I had thrown at him as a gesture of self-defense, he turned suddenly and swam back toward the depths. There had been no sound, no scent. It appears certain that sight alone was responsible for this approach.

TEXT C In general, there are four kinds of conflict: conflict between people, conflict with one self, conflict with nature, and conflict with society. The most common conflict is between people. A fist fight, for example, is certainly conflict between two people. Competition for the job of head cheerleader or class president is also conflict among people. But there are qui et conflicts between children and parents, and students and teachers. There are conflicts over jobs in business. People also find conflict within themselves. A guilty conscience is a form of inner conflict. Struggling to decide what to do in a certain situation is also a personal conflict. Will you go to college or not? Will you follow someone else's advice or your own? Will you break off with a friend? All of these questions that require soul-searching and decision-making are personal or inner conflicts. Conflicts with the forces of nature arise, too. A trapper lost in a snowstorm is in conflict with nature. So is someone who is making his way through the forest. And fighting a swift river on a raft is also conflict with nature. Finally, a person may be in conflict with society. This would describe a criminal with a grudge against the world. Or a conflict with society might involve a homeowner whose house is in the way of a new highway. An animal character faced with the destruction of its forest home is also in conflict with society.

TEXT D "Oh, I'm Just a Housewife" After watching my mother deal with our family of five, I can't understand why her answer to the question, "What do you do?" is always,"Oh, I'm just a housewife." JUST a housewife? Anyone who spends most of her time in meal preparation and cleanup, washing and drying clothes, keeping the house clean, leading a scout troop, playing taxi driver to us kids when it's time for school, music lessons or the dentist, doing volunteer work for her favorite charity, and making sure that all our family needs are met is not JUST a housewife. She's the real Wonder Woman. Why is it that so many mothers like mine think of themselves as second-class or some thing similar? Where has this notion come from? Have we males made them feel this way? Has our society made "going to work" outside the home seem more important than what a housewife must face each day? I would be very curious to see what would happen if a housewife went on strike. Dishes would pile up. Food in the house would run out. No meals would appear on the table. There would be no clean clothes when needed. High boots would be required just to make it through the house scattered with garbage. Walking and bus riding would increase. Those scout troops would have to break up. Charities would suffer. I doubt if the man of the house would be able to take over. Oh, he might start out with the attitude that he can do just as good a job, but how long would that last? Not long, once he had to come home each night after work to more household duties. There would be no more coming home to a prepared meal; he'd have to fix it himself. The kids would all be screaming for something to eat, clean clothes and more bus fare money. Once he quieted the kids, he'd have to clean the house, go shopping, make sure that kids got a bath, and fix lunches for the next day. Once the kids were down for the night, he might be able to crawl into an unmade bed and try to read the morning newspaper. No, I don't think many males are going to volunteer for the job. I know I don't want it. So, thanks, mom! I'll do what I can to create a national holiday for housewives. It could be appropriately called Wonder Woman Day.

TEXT E The Masters of Business Administration (MBA), the best known business school label, is an introduction to general management. The traditional MBA, Harvard style, has remained largely unaltered since the 1950s, and seeks to provide a thorough knowledge of business functions through the case study—a feature incidentally borrowed from law school. In a similar fashion to law school, the graduate management programs train students to think in a particular way, ultimately teaching future business leaders how to analyze problems q9uickly and contrive(想出)concise solutions. However, business comprises more than merely manipulating numbers or sourcing rational answers to problems. Today, both companies and schools are increasingly aware that business is a human activity; it is ultimately by and about people. John Quelch is a business school insider who detects the limitations of the traditional syllabus. According to Quelch, leadership is an area that schools have not fully addressed. "The basic technical training managers need is more wide spread. But leadership skills are in short supply. This could become a major constraint on the speed with which multinational companies can expand", he says. Leadership is notoriously hard to teach, but programs do have the capacity to provide a grounding in non-business areas and personal growth. "You want to produce graduates who will be effective. To do this, they need to know their own skills. Our job is not only to cram finance down their throats, but help develop them as people," explains Leo Murray, director of Cranfield School of Management in the U. K. Cran field uses philosophy in its core, which since 1997 has offered an evening lecture series en compassing (包括) both Aristotelian and present day thinking. Self-awareness is crucial at the school, which will grant the theme even more space. "These issues help people think," states Murray. The better you understand yourself, goes the logic, the better you can man age others. The Said Business School (SBS) at Oxford University champions a more integrated approach. John Kay, SBS director, is keen to leverage the intellectual might of the wider university. Access to faculty from other disciplines including philosophy, politics and economics, he believes, could give SBS an edge over other school. These are surely steps in the right direction. But there is more. In future, developing a gut instinct for business may be as important as understanding the figures. To create an MBA to meet the challenges of the 21st century business schools will have to try harder, and they know it.

Certificate or Capability. Which is More Important in Job Hunting By Xu Shanshan Nowadays our society is becoming a certificate one. Most employers attach great importance to certificates m job interviews, giving us the false impression that certificates are crucial in job hunting. However, I think capability is what really counts. First, what companies need is their employee's wisdom, originality and skills, that is, his capability. In almost all the job interviews, interviewers are most interested in the job hunter's potential capability. Some times they want to check the certificates, simply because they believe it to be a simple way to see whether the applicant is qualified and meets their requirements. Apart from this, those certificates mean nothing to them. Second, certificates represent only the past. To a company, it is of no importance whether the candidate was good or not in the past. What it ought to care most is whether the candidate is capable of more achievements in the future. In this sense, capability is more valuable. To conclude, capability is definitely more important in job hunting; certificates have no final say in judging a person's value.
